About to buy a Kindle Fire today at lunch. - Kindle Fire General

Hey guys,
I am about to buy a KF here today on my lunch break. I had a few questions though. I see all the steps and downloaded all the tools needed to Root, one thing I wondered though is if you do root and install a custom rom (Which ones the best one to get?) can you still utilize the Amazon Prime and other amazon features that you get when you purchase it?
Which Rom would be the best choice? Something light weight but customizable of course. With full Android market.
Also, I have an evo 3d, and of course it uses my google account to know which apps I bought and such, will all that + my google wallet work for the Kindle also?
Thanks all!

Do It
Buy it, use your free month of amazon prime for about 4 days until you realize that its streaming is more useless than netflix and that the bookshelf launcher thing is more annoying than using Microsoft BOB on a 386DX. Even the amazon reader PDF viewer is total garbage
1. Copy CM7 and Gapps to the kindle in disk mode
2. Root using the Kindle Fire Utility (the only problems you may face are getting the right drivers on your PC), this will burritoroot it, install the firefirefire bootloader and install the TWRP touchscreen recovery
3. When you get to the bootloader, backup first, then flash CM7+Gapps. Login with your account that is tied to your Evo3D. Multiple device win.
4. Without hardware buttons, CM7 has tablet tweaks under CMsettings. Check the box for home button as it isn't there by default. If you are right handed, change from the default to right-side, this will now put the home button in the middle in portrait mode.
5. Set up google voice so you can send/recieve text messages on your awesome tablet (it is way more than a kindle now). GrooveIP for calls if you use a headset with mic built in. Gmail app for push gmail.
6. Install the amazon kindle app for your books/syncing and then adobe pdf viewer
7. Install Google Currents and Pulse if you read the news a lot. Especially if you want to read the news anywhere you won't have a wifi connection, like on an airplane. They both prefetch.
8. Dolphin browser is so much more awesome than silk.
9. Enjoy your $200 nerdgasm in other ways you see fit...

In short, as far as I know there isn't any CURRENT way to use a custom ROM and use amazon's software aside from the SILK browser which is garbage compared to the opera equivalent (Opera Mini) which in turn is JUST as useless because you're using WiFi and not 3/4G... So save yourself the headache and get a full featured browser (I'm personally happiest with regular Opera, but there is of course Firefox, Dolphin, etc)

Just bought mine and rooted last night. I tried cm7 but didn't like how small the apps looked so i quickly flashed ics rom and it's pretty cool so far. The only thing is no sound and no video, but that's not a big deal for me. I noticed too it's not to responsive, didn't really play with it before i rooted, so not sure if it's rom related or just the way it is

If you use a launcher such s Go Launcher you would of been able to change your grid size. Thus making your icons bigger. I will share a screenshot in a bit.

All good some extras... 7. Also consider buzz box for news.
Also pair it with a phone, use wifi tether and you have net anywhere. Also you can use GPS tether and use google maps for navigation

Well, I have a question regarding the software uses. Say I buy the Kindle Fire.. will I be able to borrow books from the Kindle store if I were on a custom ROM or do I have to be on their stock ROM in order to borrow any books and use that feature/advantage.

to borrow books you have to be on the stock rom - so far as i know - i don't borrow books - the same for premium vod

Or to play it safe, you can use the STOCK rom with a custom launcher like the GO Launcher (shown above by a member).
You can still customize it with a stock rom, which I do it, cuz CM7 is not all that great on Kindle Fire yet (at least from my experiences).
Kindle Fire is great. It's fast, responsive, but the amazon apps aren't all THAT great. Best of all, you can switch between your Kindle and custom launcher at any time instantly.

How do you set up Google voice so you can send/receive texts? I just use Google voice for getting my vmails I don't use it for anything else.

Thanks! Took your advice and went back to cm7. Its definitely better this time around. Ics is nice, but too many bugs. Plus a lot of apps dont support ics yet. Much more responsive too compared to ics.

[Q] How do you use your rooted NT?

I've got a Nook Tablet that I've newly rooted. Problem is that I don't find myself using it much. Instead I find myself using my laptop for most things. (That may change eventually when I get Netflix and get some decent games.)
My friend lent me his kindle which is really easy on my eyes. If the kindle browser is any indication, I think I'd use the NT to do some web surfing that involved reading longer articles. So I think I'd have a basic use in reading books and doing some web surfing (and I'm curious about your opinion in how the NT does here).
But how are you using your Nook Touch? In the land of laptops, iPads, cellphones, etc etc, do you use it much?
Thanks in advance,
v
Hi,
Just my 50 cents. First and last - NST is a decent e-book reader, that was the main goal of its designers.
If you are not reading much (no way to know if it is true, just assuming), then rooting will take couple of days just to play with, etc. and then ... your NST falls in oblivion It is useful to have few organizer tools, some games to play when bored, etc. , but there is myriad of devices around, which provide better experience for web-surfing, gaming, etc.
Mostly reading, some light web-browsing and email reading. Sometimes reading tweets and using linkedin app. The rest I guess I've used only once or twice, just to check if they work (20+ apps). Ah, a picross game too (love that!), that I played quite a few times. Titanium backup pro to recover when I get to screw things up and root explorer to do some hacking (seldom used either).
As said above, the NST is primarily a e-book reader, if you bought it as a "cheap" tablet then you wasted your money
Now with that said it should also be said that eInk devices are becoming more and more popular due to the low cost and the comfortable reading experience they deliver.
People buy them as a supplement to their laptop, smartphone and tablet, not as a replacement
With that in mind I'm sure we'll see some key applications released for eInk devices in the future.
Just my two cents..

Are you talking of the Nook Touch or the Nook Tablet ?
I use my Nook Touch mainly to read books, pdf, and a few mangas and also to read wikipedia offline.
I started with a rooted Nook Color and thought it was great, it let me do everything I wanted (android apps) and read books. After awhile, the device got to be to heavy to use as a reader.
At the time, I had a dumb phone. After getting a Galaxy and running rooted Android, I suddenly found myself using the phone for everything. Sure, it had a smaller screen (versus the Nook Color) but it traveled in my pocket and was ready to go. The color Nook was big and bulky. After a few months I sold my Color Nook on ebay and went 100% with the Galaxy for my daily use.
After a bit more time had passed, I found myself not reading books on the phone as much because the backlit screen was starting to get annoying on my eyes.
As much as I liked having an all-in-one device, I just purchased a NST that I will be keeping to use as a reader. I only want root to add the Gmail apps and a browser for stock quotes. The NST may do everything a Nook Color or my Galaxy phone can do, but I just want an easy on the eyes, lightweight reader device for the times I'm reading. I don't see myself carrying the NST around on a daily basis, I'm just intending it as a bedside book reader, or on vacation take along.
I use my Nook mainly for recording what the homework is for the day and taking notes in class, and so far it isn't that bad. It's a little annoying since multitouch is broken, causing several wrong keys to be pressed, but overall I enjoy having my Nook rooted.

Do you do trading too?
IMO, if you use nook for reading only, the rooting give you access to various cloud storage providers, like dropbox, etc. So you sync your books between all devices… and friends.
I use my Nook for reading, library books and also public domain books from Project Gutenberg.
I also keep about 1000 song transcriptions on it.
I hate touch screen typing and I have a mini USB keyboard on it when I feel like email or chat. If I could get Opera Mobile to understand what a page down is I would install a foot switch on it.

I use my nook mainly for reading (as it seems everyone else is doing) and sometimes Twitter (with the GO twi widget). I have an iPod for music, but I have noticed me not using that as much and replacing my time with the NST.
I wish there was a really good NST forum app, but I can't find one.
I rooted so I could read more ebooks. In addition to reading B&N books on the Nook, I have the Google Books, Kindle for Android, and Aldiko apps all loaded and ready to go. Good stuff!

Are you finding Aldiko is still working? It worked fine at first for me, then after adding some PDF's stopped working. I removed the PDF's from the documents folder, and tried uninstalling, rebooting, then re-downloaded and installed from market, rebooted, and still it just flashes once and goes to home screen. Using Mantano reader currently, but I'm more comfortable with Aldiko from using it on other devices. I read in comments on another blog that it was a current problem for it to stop working, so I'm wondering if you're still using it.
IRT OP I plan to use it mainly as a reader, but prefer the selection, and ease of getting books on the alternative readers/stores such as Google Play, Mantano, Feedbooks. The Nook store requires quite a bit of effort to find the free books, and then there are multiple copies of each one, most with dubious reviews regarding quality, spelling, errors, etc... I also like the idea of being able to download books from the library wirelessly using the Overdrive app. I'll either remove Gmail, or install WidgetLocker to put a lockscreen on the NST if I decide to keep Gmail on it. My G2 meets all my other needs. I've been enjoying using the hotspot on my G2 to connect my Nook with Wifi, it's like having a 4G NST.

Good guide! However for some people setting up adb is complicated and Root explorer also isn't free. My app is aimed for those people who rather pay $2 to solve this by touching a single button. Also my app re-applys the keymap at boot time so if you are frequently flashing new versions of the same custom ROM (like CM9 nightlys) you won't need to push the button (or do the adb/root-explorer stuff) again unless you do a full wipe.
But I don't blame you, I would have fixed it myself too. Not to save $2 but because I know perfectly well what needs to be done and I like the challenge of fixing stuff myself.
In fact, I did (but with the Swedish/Finnish layout) but then I realized that if I needed this tweak, others might need it aswell so I decided to make something that was easy to use and also make it available for people in other countries that face the same problems.

Great, you saved $2 and propably learned something while doing it. Others who don't want to learn about adb or buy Root Explorer may prefer buying the app.
Many things are free if you are willing to spend some time learning how to do them yourself.

Google really should add paypal support. The Visa/Mastercard requirement really sucks. I have teenage kids with Android phones even though I trust them I still do not want to connect my Visa or Mastercard to their Google accounts. With paypal on the other hand I could have transfered a limited sum of money to for them to buy apps with. A lot of paid apps are aimed for kids and teenagers but Google Checkout only supports credit cards... That sucks!

This is so great !:good::good::good::good: I've been struggling all weekend to get this keyboard on azerty, for use with my google tv cloud stick.
It works great, however, only on qwerty. I've changed it through my pc (with the software I had to download from the logitech site ) and on my laptop it works on azerty, but as soon as I try to write something on my screen (when the tv stick is connected to my tv) it still is qwerty, even though it shows azerty on the screen. I think this is big shortcoming from Logitech as no software was included in the box (not everyone is a computer geek) and they should be prescient as what their wireless keyboards will be used for. (Like android on tv or tablets a.s.o.)
As soon as I get home tonight I'll try the app to change the keyboard. I am very curious...
If it works, you've made my day :good:

Need a browser (on stock) that can support a flash site for medical school exam prep

Hi, this was a time and $$ sensitive issue - I'm a medical student trying to prepare for my last licensing (usmle) exam coming soon and can't get this website working on my N7 stock (no root) device.
Basically, I can't find a browser from google play store that will work well with this website (it's work friendly safe) below.
http://www.usmlerx.net/USmle/QMax/user/testdrive.aspx?step=2
To see what I mean : (go to above link 1st)
You have to click on Start Test Drive Now
It will then send you to 20 sample questions. If you click on the lower right (red - stop sign to end the exam), you will be brought back to the sample test with answers/explanations - having difficulty scrolling through these.
I have a side loaded Adobe APK (latest version available from adobe site) - scrolling and navigating with a logitech wireless mouse connected via OTG USB Cable (logitech unifying wireless usb adapter).
Unfortunately, they don't have an android supported version - Any help you all could guide me with, would be great!
I don't mind if the app is paid - I will go ahead and buy it... preferably any browser that isn't bloated with ads.
Also tried purchasing Xscope browser and have had some success with it - but the navigation is a bit shaky... and it's causing me to lose focus on actually studying the practice exam content.
Tried using dolphin HD and chrome - no flash support (at least it told me it doesn't work when trying the link above) and firefox (and firefox beta) - the flash content is fuzzy and I can't scroll up or down on the page.
I have Adobe_FlashPlayer_11.1.115.17 installed and I can scroll through the results using the stock JB browser (not chrome, which doesn't support Flash).

Flash: http://db.tt/bF1Vw8om

Thanks for replying; along with the dropbox links.... I have the last ICS adobe flash installed (from adobe site) -
Regarding that link to the browser... can I install this on stock OS (without root)? Are there any risks (e.g. security) or bugs? Meaning, can we find/get updates in the future on whatever it may be?
I did see a previous thread in the app section talking about AOSP browser, but requires root -
Good question. It's the standard browser that comes with JB. I'm not running the stock ROM (I'm using CM10), so I can't verify if that browser is in installed with the stock ROM on the Nexus.
Go into the apps drawer and if Browser is there, then you are good to go.

Unfortunately, the linked apk can't be installed (as per the notice displayed); -thanks for replying back.
Can any others try that link I posted above or suggest a flash friendly alternative browser to non-root stock users?
Firefox displays everything fuzzy / Xscope browser has this built-in left//right page swipe and I can't scroll down the vertical bar or page without activating it....
The biggest bummer of all is, I can't zoom the flash content text nor scroll within the flash window to read - forcing me to use the vertical navigation bar to the right - again, if you follow the link+instructions on from the OP or below, you can see what I mean.
Appreciate the continued help -
@Billgoss- can you maybe (or someone else) try that link and instruction from OP or below, to tell me how the navigation/scrolling is?
You'll have to:
1. Visit http://www.usmlerx.net/USmle/QMax/user/testdrive.aspx?step=2
2. Click on Start Test Drive Now
It will then send you to 20 sample questions.
3. If you click on the lower right (red - stop sign to end the exam) END BLOCK
4. you will be brought back to test analysis/results page
5. Click "Review Test" - sample test with answers/explanations - having difficulty scrolling through these. This is the most important part - if you click through any question from 1-20 , must be able to read all the explanations to right/wrong choices.
I realize this might not be one of the cool topic posts, but would love to see some of our medical students use other android alternatives like these N7's

Thanks for this again - how do we prevent the update notification specific for an application?
I like receiving the update notifications for other things, but if I didn't update Dolphin - update notification would always remain on that notification bar. I understand you can globally disable updates (never did this), but how does everyone go by this usually on specific .APKs?

Flash player works great in aurora (google it because i can't post a frickin link), I've found it to be much more stable than xscope (and free-er-er). No pixelation in the latest build for me and adblocker thrown in is always a plus. edit: i forgot to mention the one limitation. although it wasnt this way when i first installed aurora. you cant full screen flash videos. i just zoom to fit the screen though.

[App/1.5+/Open-source/Root and Non-root] Permanent screen off for the Visual Impaired

Open source app development project: Permanent screen off for the Visual Impaired
Short summary
This is an app development project that turns off the Android screen permanently yet keeps the touchscreen and other features active and functional for the visual impaired.
Introduction & Goals of the project
There are many Android users who are blinded. And to them, they access the app mainly using TalkBack or other Screen Reader app. That also means that the screen is basically useless to them. They don't need to look at the screen yet they need to be able to use touchscreen.
This project is to create an app that will turn the screen completely off (100% off) yet let the user use the phone as normal.
Assuming that the blind takes more time than normal user to perform an action, it dramatically saves the device's battery.
The app must be easy to use and tailored to visual impaired user.
The app automatically runs with the device.
The app must be free and advertisement-free.
Background
I am the developer of the project and I recruit the interest of other developers / users as well. I am the developer of Screen Standby app, which this project is based on.
Device requirements
- Running Android 1.5 (Cupcake) or above
- (Optionally) Rooted for best battery-saving. The app works with non-root device though, only rooted device achieves complete dark
Instruction
1) Download the apk and Install the app
2) Run the app at least once
3) Select Enable app from menu
4) If the system asks for Superuser access, select always remember and allow
5) To disable, select "Disable app" from the menu and restart the device.

NOTE: Please read
1) Always use a screen reader (e.g TalkBack) with the app. In case you want to use your device without the screen
2) This app will permanently switch the device's screen off when it is active. To turns the screen back on, select "Disable app" or uninstall app completely and reboot
3) To uninstall from ADB, go to a shell and type: adb uninstall com.nkahoang.screenoffvisualimpair
Download
Currently the app can be downloaded from attachment section of this post. When it is stable enough, it will be ready to be released on Play Store for free download.
Source code can be downloaded in second post
If you know any Android user who is blinded, let them use the app and report. Any feedback is welcomed

As the guy above me said. G great idea which actually will help some people. But I don't think that many actually blind people are going to find this app unfortunately... You have to put it on Google play and name it in such way that blind people will find it

Hello,
While putting it on the Play store is a good idea, there are a few blind folks on XDA like myself who would be happy to give this app some testing beforehand.
Thanks for posting to the eyes-free list, and thanks for developing this app!
correct this is also needs to be on the playstore as screen off or something easy that some of us can find more easily on the playstore . all of us blind people thank you for the app that hav found it but for those who cant can you please turn it into an APK installer or make it easy to install from playstore. as a lot of blind people don't know how to install zip files on android. if you can give me a quick tutorial I can explain to the eyes free list. I am a blind intermediate user of android. I do understand rooting, installing custom roms and gapps and installing apps for rooted devices but some of the rest on the eyes fre are a bit limited here so if you can give them an APK installable file it would be much easier to install rather then a zip package in which they have to figure out what to do with it.

Hi,
I sure will put it on play store once it is stable. The app is currently in development.
The zip file is for the source code of the app. I attached the apk on the very first post:

Well done OP.
You are a hero for undertaking this venture. I wish you more success.
I still might have a use for this in my Android devices that I'm using as Network Cameras using the IP Webcam app.
But I will have to test it out to see if it acts the way I need it to (I'm not at home yet, but I will try it.)
On Android 2.x I'm able to have a camera app run fine in the background or with the screen off, but on Android 4.0 and newer, the camera doesn't work completely if you turn off the screen or switch to a different app.
I'm wondering, will this app allow me to have the screen completely off (on a rooted device) but still have the camera use all the processor it needs for perfect Network Camera functionality?
Thanks.

The camera will continue functioning normally. However, you may want to consider using my other app, Screen Standby # Root, also on XDA to achieve that. This app is tailored specifically to aid the blind in particular.
nkahoang i dont know if you got my email i sent a while back but i was looking for a app like this but be able to close my tablet and plug a keyboard and a mouse into my dock and hook it up to my tv and use my tv as a monitor screens cracked and touchscreen capability are all down the drain, would be great if you could add this feature to this app so i could finally find a use for my tablet again and as always keep up the good work.:good::fingers-crossed:
I have another use that I would like to ask for. Could you integrate Tasker support? I ride a motorcycle and have a bluetooth kit installed on my helmet. I leave my phone in my pocket or a glove box and therefore the screen is of no use to me. Yet if I ask Google Now to navigate somewhere, it opens navigation that keeps the screen on draining battery quickly. This really sucks as I don't have an outlet to plug into while riding. So, if I could setup a profile to activate this app while riding and disable it when I'm done, that could help me out a lot.
hello I was wondering I there has been further development on this app.
Lots of blind users are wondering about eh app development.
Since ther is no info a bit oncerning .
I know tha you develop the screen root stand by primarly but can you also devot e some development ot he app for he blind as well.
thanks for your development efforts
Hello, Now I am using Shades app by the eyes free team at Google. That is an app published to the google play. However after reading the description in the first post I think this app might be capable of saving more of the battery juice. I have just installed it on my SGS2 running CM-10 however if this is already know I would like to ensure this is really more powerfull than the Shades app I was tallking about.
Thanks and greetings
Peter

Buzzing audio noise issue
I've recently bought one of these & it seems pretty good for the money (i.e. £40 on prime day with student discount). I've installed the Google Play Store & downloaded some apps & everything works fine so far. It's mostly being used to listen to music using the Google Music & BBC Radio apps, both of which work fine.
However I've noticed a couple of issues with the audio which are quite annoying. The tablet is connected to my stereo amplifier via a cable (headphone jack to 2 stereo jack). The first problem is when the amp is on but the tablet is off there is a buzzing noise. Secondly, when the tablet is on audio plays perfectly with no buzzing but when whatever is playing has finished (i.e. when no sound is playing) there is silence for some time (maybe 5 or 10 minutes) but then a buzzing noise starts & repeats erratically. However, this noise stops as soon as the tablet screen is switched on. The noise sounds like the tablet isn't earthed correctly but I've used the same cables & connections with my old Nexus 7 tablet without any problem so don't see why this should be any different.
Having spoken with Amazon they suggest a factory reset which I'm holding back from doing as it's taken me some time to set it up & I'd rather not go through it again. However, they did remove the adverts from the lockscreen for free while I was chatting to them which was good.
Anyway, my question is does this sound like a software fault, a hardware fault, or an issue with the cable I'm using. Obviously, if it's a hardware fault I'll have to send it back anyway but it's a pain whatever as I'm quite happy with it otherwise. Also if I send it back does anyone think that the fact I've installed the Google Play Store on it will affect the return.
Sorry for long rambling post but couldn't find anything about this issue anywhere else & appears this is the first question posted in this thread so maybe it's a bit too early to expect anyone to be able to answer from experience yet.
Cheers anyway.
Eagerly awaiting root fix for these!
Blank Home Screen on HD8-7th
I have a Fire HD 8, 7th Gen, running Fire OS 5.4.0.0.
My problem is that my home screen will sometimes go blank. I can swipe down to show the Brightness etc, and I can hit the square on the bottom to see and use any running apps, but the screen that usually shows Home, Books, Video, etc is completely blank. I can swipe down, open settings, and navigate through there with no problems.
I have done a factory reset, and still have the symptoms.
The only things I have done after the reset is install Adobe acrobat from the Amazon Appstore, and install the Google Play Store using these APKs:
edit: I am having a hard time with the forum link autodetect. All of these are on www<DOT>.apkmirror<DOT>com.

Any suggestions? I am willing to try another reset, and try without the Google stuff for a few days, but it seems like lots of people are using this on this tablet without problem.
Thanks,
Ed

Since this thread is pretty quiet & doesn't seem to have any responses I can only offer my own experience which is that I've installed Google Play Store following this thread:
how-to-install-google-play-store-fire-t3486603 & haven't experienced this issue. I'm not sure about the source of your apks but if you're getting them from elsewhere maybe try the links in the thread I've given to see if that makes any difference?
You could get the tablet replaced as a factory reset is the standard test Amazon suggest before offering a replacement so if that hasn't worked then it is likely an issue with the tablet itself. If you do chat to Amazon about it is worth mentioning the ads on the lockscreen (if you have them) as you can get them removed for free fairly easily (basically by just mentioning them).

Thanks for the helpful post. Are you aware of a dedicated thread (or other place) where dev-minded individuals working with the hd fire 7th gen may frolic in efforts to root/unlock bootloader? At least a list of known potential exploits etc? I had no trouble finding such resources for my Note 4. I don't expect to have time to really dig in - but I might contribute in small ways.

A couple thoughts-
-the steps must be followed in order on that post or things night get wonky.
-are you using the stock launcher or something else? I had similar issues with launcherpro. Did you start to follow the instructions on how to change your launcher perhaps?
-I had better luck when installing the apks from my device instead of sideloading. I have some ideas as to why, but that doesn't matter in this post.
-Do you have a particular setting that is synchronizing after you log in? You night try turning off app sync and backup and then clearing the data/cache for the launcher app.
Perhaps the easiest solution is to change your launcher app to something nicer. I've been using Nova (pretty standard launcher replacement) and it works great.
Blank Home Screen - resolution
Thank you all for your advice.
Here is what worked for me:
I uninstalled the Google Play store from my home screen, then reinstalled all four apks from my SD Card. I don't know why this worked, because I thought I did that before. Maybe I installed directly from the APK website, I don't know, but I have not seen the blank home screen I described above since.
By this time, I had already talked to Amazon, and their policy seemed to be "Blank screen after system restore? Ship him a replacement." So now I am returning a probably perfect HD8 to Amazon. <shrug>
Thanks, again, and I am looking forward to when you geniuses figure out how to root the HD8.

Hey I just ordered my HD 8 2017 and I'm worried I won't be able to stream to my chromecast. I use plex and netflix and something else I should maybe not mention, but I just wanted to make sure I could use this stuff because it's like 50% of what I plan on using it for.

I haven't tried using mine to stream to other devices, but after installing the Google App Store (see other posts above), I've watched Netflix and have watched content streamed from my home PC using Plex. No issues so far.
Hey guys, anyone is having issues with the YouTube app crashing while viewing the subscriptions tab or having heavy lag? I can't even view that tab without the app force closing itself.
Hi! I'm running Fire OS 5.4 and I've installed the Google Play, Google Framework, Google Home, etc...
but I can't seem to get Netflix to display the Chromecast button, also Plex has the icon, but it's unable to cast to the device.
I like the tablet, don't mind the adds, won't even root it if there is a fix for the Chromecast issue. C'mon Amazon, it's an Android, stop restricting my life...

I'm having an issue with Plex casting to the Chromecast, it shows up within the app, but isn't able to cast to device.
Netflix, I don't see the icon anywhere, not even when you start the play the video.
Hoping there's a fix that doesn't require a root, but I like you would really like to use this feature.
I took my 5.4.0.1 device back to the store and exchanged for one with 5.4.0.0 and used the debloater tool to remove/hide OTA updates, should I block anything other than com.amazon.device.software.ota and com.amazon.kindle.otter.oobe.forced.ota?
The ads don't hurt me so I left that but installed the Nova Launcher and Google Services, should I avoid registering with Amazon because of this? Will registering the device with Amazon cause any problems after installing those and blocking updates?
Didn't realize it, but I bought (again) moon reader pro and calibre companion on amazon appstore. I didn't know that they used their monopoly to block installation of alternative book apps from their own store.
Good thing for the sideload though. I didn't think I'd need it but Amazon forced me.

Depending on the fire os version, you can disable several apps, stop auto updates, install play store, change launcher and disable lockscreen adds. Just do a search un the amazon fire forum.

Thank you, but I saw a thread that was similar to my issue and I called Amazon told them I want to send the tablet back and get a tablet with no Special Offers. They cancelled the Special Offer free of charge. That's customer service!
Did you ever have any issues after doing what you mentioned? I already had one tablet auto-update and really want to make sure the second is safe.
