▌█▐ Free USB Tether method for Android - AziLink 2.0.2 ▌█▐
DOES NOT REQUIRE ROOT!
I came across this while searching for free USB tethering methods and apps. I am currently posting this message from this method and it is 100% free to setup and use. I know rooted devices can utilize the free Wifi tether, which I also have and I am also rooted but it kills my battery to use that so I wanted to find a USB solution.
I have compiled all needed files and zipped them for ease of download.
Download link: (---CLICK HERE!---)
Website: http://code.google.com/p/azilink/
Instructions from that site (which is also included in the .zip file):
Description:
AziLink is an application that allows USB tethering for Android-based phones, without requiring root access. It works by using a Java-based NAT that communicates with OpenVPN on the host computer. It's been tested on MacOS, Windows, and Linux. The connection will be forwarded over the phone's active network service, which can be either WiFi or 3G/EDGE.
Required files:
* ADB from the 1.1 or 1.5 Android SDK or from http://lfx.org/azilink/adb.zip
* OpenVPN 2.1 (not 2.0) from http://openvpn.net/index.php/downloads.html
* AziLink.apk from the download section or from http://lfx.org/azilink/azilink.apk
* AziLink.ovpn from the download section or from http://lfx.org/azilink/azilink.ovpn
Installation:
1) Install OpenVPN on the host. I use version 2.1_rc15, but any version should work. Apparently if you use version 2.0 you'll need to remove the NO_DELAY option from the AziLink.ovpn configuration file. You can find OpenVPN at:
http://openvpn.net/index.php/downloads.html
2) Enable USB debugging on the phone. From the home screen, this is under
Settings>Applications>Development>USB debugging.
3) Install the Android USB driver (if you don't already have one installed).
See http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/device.html for more information. The driver is included in the ADB download if you don't want to get the full SDK.
4) Install the program. You can either use ADB to install by typing
"adb install azilink.apk" with the file in the current directory, or you can browse (on the phone!) to: http://lfx.org/azilink/azilink.apk
Either way you might need to allow installation from unknown sources
under Settings>Applications>Unknown Sources.
Configuration steps:
1) On the host, run "adb forward tcp:41927 tcp:41927" to set up port forwarding. Be sure to use adb from the Android 1.1 or 1.5 SDK! The version from 1.0 will lock up under heavy load. If you don't want to download the entire SDK, you can get a copy of ADB+drivers from http://lfx.org/azilink/adb.zip
2) On the phone, run AziLink and make sure "Service active" is checked.
3) Right click AziLink.ovpn on the host (not in the web browser!) and select "Start OpenVPN on this configuration file." You can find this file at: http://lfx.org/azilink/azilink.ovpn. If you're using Linux or, god forbid, MacOS, you'll also need to manually set the nameserver to 192.168.56.1 (the phone's NAT IP address). This address is automatically forwarded to the phone's current DNS server.
Just wanted to point out there is also a wired tether app by same dev as wireless tether app and also comes built in with latest cyanogenmod.
I personally don't like anything that requires drivers as I often tether to my iPod and anything that requires a driver won't work with my iPod or many other common items I tether to.
However, everyone likes their own procedures, and I'm sure someone will find this useful.

u sir, have failed, jk but here is a cyanogen rom from one of ur guys great developers Darchdroid v 2.7
Darchdroid 2.7 w/ Wired Tether
I'm trying to get the Wired Tether app (made by the same ppl as Wireless Tether than everyone knows and loves) to work with Darchdroid 2.7 but am having no luck!
If anyone has gotten it to work, please let me know how!
I've got the app installed, but Windows 7 does not recognize it as a network adapter...thinking its a windows driver issue, but need some help...
thanks!
thank you 4 ur nice help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
why not justdownload pdanet or easytether i have both and the wireless tether those two are very simple to use and works good
Two reasons that i use Azilink:
1: no PDANet usb support for linux
2: wired tether built into cyanogen, as well as the standalone app cause the 3g connection in my Eris to intermittently cut in and out while azilink does not. (PDANET solves this problem in windows)
u can giv a try to easy tether but its not free tho work fine and easy to use
EasyTether shares your Android smartphone connection with your PC. This app allows you to tether your Android to a desktop or a notebook computer. EasyTether uses exactly the same data plan that is used for the on-phone Internet access like in the built-in browser or e-mail app or youtube application. No additional tethering fees.
Features
* does not require root access
* supports Windows 7/Vista/XP (32-bit and 64-bit), Mac OS X 10.6/10.5/10.4, and Ubuntu 10.4+
* UDP support for games, for L2TP VPN (not PPTP!) and for some IM apps
* tether PS3, XBox 360 or Wii via Windows Internet Connection Sharing feature
* free lifetime upgrades for the full version
* USB support
* compatible with HTC Sync
* Bluetooth DUN will be added later.
* much cheaper than PDANet
* implemented as a normal NAT application with full TCP and UDP support
Is it possible to use Azilink with Voip?
I have nat error, so is it possible to forward ports?
Yup, thats dumb question, why to tether for voip if you can use wirless card
I have sagem dongle and it ... losses connection often while my phone is online all the time, and i don't want to spend money for some good wifi adapter, if i could use phone that i already have
Awesome
Anybody know where to find an apk in 2020? There are github sites but only source there. I don't consider EasyTether to be so wonderful, and I paid the $10 for it. It's not open source so I can't tell why it breaks but I've had to reinstall it maybe 20 times, it's a black box.

Have u tried FoxFi
I probably should have checked back here, I'm learning to live with easytether. I wrote a little bash script to pkill the easytether-usb process, wait 1 second, then restart it. That for some reason seems to renew the phone connection. I can connect via ssh over wifi to the Pi that's serving as an AP/router, run that script and it's fixed. It's maybe not worked twice in 6 months, I need to do it half a dozen times a day or so. I can ssh from a computer or phone.
Hi guys,
I came from a jailbroken iPhone about a year ago (launch day EVO user) and I always used Veency and iTunnel to remote into my phone when at work so I don't look like a slacker that I am, playing on my phone and all. Well, I finally decided to take some time and find a Android solution to my problem. Since droid vnc server is the only vnc server available for the Android platform (correct me if I'm wrong guys and gals). So did some research, first trying iTunnel to forward my TCP port to the USB, connection established but it seems iTunnel was specifically built for iOS. So instead, researched some more and found ADB can provide the functionality of iTunnel. So using UltraVNC viewer, droid VNC server (found on the market), and ADB, here's how I got it to work:
Plug in phone to USB
In command prompt run: adb forward tcp:5801 tcp 5801
Also in command prompt run: adb forward tcp:5901 tcp:5901
Make sure Droid VNC Server is started on the phone
In UltraVNC viewer, browse to "localhost:5901"
After that, you should be all set. Use the help button in droid VNC server to help you with the input.
Going to try it out
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
I had to edit my original post. In UltraVNc, its "localhost:5901" not "5801". Sorry!!
Got it running. But what are you using this for?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
While I'm at work, using a phone is frowned on. So I can keep my phone out of sight and charging on my USB port while shooting off texts and IMs discreetly
Gotcha
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Okay, so i typed in the first command
adb forward tcp:5801 tcp 5801
Click to collapse
and the prompt spit out a list of ADB commands. so i moved on to the next step and ran the next command
adb forward tcp:5901 tcp:5901
Click to collapse
and i get: "error: device not found"
what am i doing wrong?
Edit: The phone is connected by USB btw.
Edit 2: I am able to connect to my phone via the internet VNC connection, just not through the local host.

Worked for me, was wondering how to do this. Thanks.
I use TightVNC though, and it needed two colons. (ie localhost::5901)
Hmm, I was hoping this would be smoother than over WiFi, but actually the refresh is about the same. Any tips on improving that?
For iphone?
Thank you so much sir,
can you plese help me how to do the same thing on iphone...please...i will really appreciate you....plz...plz..plz...

wondering is it normal the connection is laggy through the local network ?
Thought I'd share some info regarding connection of the Xoom 2 ME. This may also apply to the Xoom 2 and Xyboards.
The Xoom 2 ME does not mount as USB mass storage, it supports MTP (and, I presume, PTP).
My laptop runs Ubuntu 11.10 with the GNOME 3 desktop. There is no file-browser or popup when the X2ME is plugged in, as there would be when a UMS device is connected. I suspect this is down to the udev config not having the USB IDs, so that's something to look into soon.
Banshee didn't detect it, so I installed the Gmtp application (sudo apt-get install gmtp) and this permits transfer of files to the X2ME. I got a rather poor upload rate of 2.5MB/s on a 1.4GB video file.
It was not possible to download a file from the X2ME using Gmtp -- I haven't yet tried any other apps.
The version of libmtp supplied with Ubuntu 11.10 doesn't recognise the X2ME device codes, though this has already been addressed by the developers. Maybe this will be in Ubuntu 12.04.
try this...that transfer rate is slow but is above full speed USB so the problem lays elsewhere
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1077572
Yeah, the syslog reports it as a high speed device, so my assumption is it's working at USB 2 speeds.
Just gave mtpfs a try. If we ignore some random and extremely long hangs of a minute or more, a file download ran at ~14MB/s and seemed to work OK. An upload ran at 40MB/s, but the resulting file was 0 bytes in length and was followed by a lengthy hang.
Will run mtpfs in debug mode to see if it shows why it's hanging. There are some other MTP utilities like gnomad2 that I might try as well.
A few quick updates. First, it seems that USB debugging must be enabled for MTP connectivity to work. When I disable it, the X2ME isn't seen at all by mtp-detect or other utilities.
Gnomad2 works, and was a little faster at upload than gmtp -- it peaked at an "astonishing" 4MB/s . Unfortunately its interface sucks for file access (it is, after all, designed more as a music transfer tool).
There is definitely a long delay every time libmtp connects to the device. This is normally over 1 minute and seems to consist mostly of USB device resets and then connection retries.
Enabling debug of mtpfs didn't flag up anything useful.
A useful aside, if you export LIBMTP_DEBUG=7 before running apps that use libmtp, it enables lots of debug output. Specific information on choosing the debug level are in the lib's README.
What I do is the following:
I have Root FTP on my Xoom which required also to install a script in my Linux Mint distro (would be the same for Ubuntu) and once I want to transfer, I can be via wifi or via USB cable; I just have to run the script in linux (2sec) and activate the Root FTP software on the Xoom and I can use any FTP software to remote in and transfer files to and from the Xoom.

Xoom 2 has no root access yet :-( . So this is not possible ... I have no trouble to transfer files to my xoom 2 me with smb network ... Thx for the infos Fluffy . I am trying few things now ...
Yeah, so far the simplest transfer method has been to use ES File Explorer to pull files across via SMB.

After having a quick play around for 5 minutes, iptables shows all policies as "allow". Services such as Airdroid are showing as bound to ipv6 sockets rather than ipv4 sockets, so I'm going to have a bit more of a dig around in that area.
For example, from "netstat -nlp" whilst Airdroid is listening on 8888:
tcp6 0 0 :::8888 :::* LISTEN
tcp6 0 0 :::8889 :::* LISTEN
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526465&page=1
This program is solve my problem and now i can wireless transfer files from my xoom 2 to my linux pc. Is not the most elegant solution but until now is the only solution that working for me ...
I finally solved my problem with airdroid filexpert and others similar apps by removing zumoservice from system applications. Probably this will create problems with motocast ( i can't check this, i am linux user)

xyboard
As far as the Xyboard is concerned it works fine for me on Ubuntu. When the device is connected I change from MTP to PTP. It's the second option under usb computer connection on the Xyboard. Once done, I've gotten access to the folders on the device and have tranferred videos, music, and documents. Hope this helps.

Hello
How has the uninstalling of zumoservice solving your Problem ?
I´m trying to mount my xoom 2 me on opensuse 12.2 with kde 4.11 and get an Error which could be caused by
the motocast installer cd which shows up on systems where the motorola drivers are not already installed.
This breaks the connection between linux and xoom. So i ask myself how i can shutdown this "service".
If this is caused by zumoservice i could uninstall it, but a deactivation by Titanium did not solved the Problem yet.
Thanks in advance! Michael
Try deactivate all applications you think that are related with motocast... I don't have now my tablet so i can't help you more, i will try later to find the list of all applications i had removed...

my mobiler needs the phone to be connected to the desktop with a usb cable. thats a turn off. and if a rom (such as some of the ics roms based off the leak rom) isn't supporting usb mount, then theres no use. webkey can be connected to your phone from any wi-fi connection, from any browser, from any pc.
Mymobiler was the ipso facto app for wm6.x to enable one to control ones phone via a pc.
many people were waiting for it to be ported to android. It does support wifi as well as USB connections. I'm fiddling with mine now, as it happens. (downloading webkey, never heard of that one so thanks. I'll have a fiddle with that one too. It looks far more complicated i.e My mobiler is exactly what is says. Your phone on your desktop. I do like the look of the GPS stuff in webkey though.. Still fiddling...)
Webkey... far too complicated. How many user names/passwords/registration of device with them even?

I agree with that, but it also depends on what requirements you got
little bit slow, but worth it a try
webkey is slow over the wifi. cant connect with usb. much trickier than mymobiler. Also much slower than my mobiler.
Actually, I agree. Hence, I've uninstalled it since discovering Airdroid. Its also free on the now Google Play Store (seriously though, Google Market sounds much better, I don't know what they were thinking.)
Its similar to webkey, but its more organized and has a better layout. And if you can't or don't want to connect via Wi-Fi you can tether it to your PC with a USB. You can control your Note from the browser as well. Definitely check this one out, much simpler to use. I don't like apps that restrict me to only be able to control my phone or act as a file manager with a cable. But this has both options.

I'm trying to get DSLR Controller app to work with my rooted Nook Color.
I've been to the DSLR support thread and after a few chats it would appear that USB Host Mode is not working or at least not properly on my NC.
DSLR Cont requires CM7 & Nook Tweaks to enable USB Host Mode and I thought I'd done everything right - thoroughly read up before modding the NC and all seemed to go well and works just fine except for Host Mode.
One thing is that most of the modding threads talk about modding when the NC is running pre 1.4.0 firmware. I found one for mine which is running 1.4.2 but apart from that and the latest stable mod being CM7.1 encore I can't see any other differences.
Plugging a USB Mouse in doesn't work. The only powered USB Drive I have is a USB3 2Tb unit that it doesn't see and doesn't charge the NC when VBus is ticked on.
I'm out of clues, a search here doesn't reveal any answers to me. Is there something obvious I'm missing or is it as simple as the fact my NC was on 1.4.2 or ...?

I'm confused. You said you read where host mode requires CM7 and Nook Tweaks. Yet you seem to be trying to make it work on stock 1.4.2. Or do you mean you put CM7 on your device, upgrading from 1.4.2? If so, that should have made no difference. CM7 should have installed properly using the old guides. Other than that, I don't know much about host mode so can't help.

Right I get a couple of screens of response.
In the middle of the 2nd screen it says
<6> usb 1-1: Product: Canon Digital Camera
so I'm guessing it's found the camera on the port??
Bad form replying to myself - however I decided to try the app again and it has magically sprung in to life and found my camera.
So thank you. And if I may, what did busybox dmesg do to cause it to start working and will I need to re-run that each time I power cycle?

DSLR Controller with CM10
This thread maybe a bit stale but I haven't been able to get DSLR Controller to work with the latest nightly of CM10 for the Nook Color.
Can anyone verify that this is indeed possible yet? Has USB Host mode been activated yet for CM10?
Thanks.
Donbga
I'm having a similar problem and the gremlins remain (always better to post in an existing thread.. right?).
Fresh install of CM 7.2 on Nook color. Nook tweaks, USB host controller, remote release by Chainfire. Camera is Canon 5Dii.
I tried a USB mouse and can see that in the busybox output. The USB mouse works fine. When I disconnect the mouse and attach the camera, I get nothing in busybox, well, I don't see any reference to a canon. I've enabled USB host in Nook tweaks, wake up camera, connect the USB, but nothing. If you'd like to see my busybox output, is there a way to download to log file to upload here (or copy/paste the output)?
I've seen mention of "memory limit mod" but have not been able to find what that is in reference to, so I've not changed any memory limits.
Any help would be great, would love to get this working. I teach photography, and a bigger screen in the field would be really useful.
Found out how to mod the memory for Android 2.3 (not required on other Android versions) so here's the instructions if others google through.
Download "Root Browser Lite" (free)
navigate to root folder (highest level up the tree)
open the /system folder
long press on file "build.prop"
select "Permissions"
under the "write" column, check the box "others"
hit back to return to the system folder file list.
tap the file build.prop and open with a file editor.
find dalvik.vm.heapsize
change the value to your desired value. dslrcontroller.com FAQs recommends 128mb or 196mb
save the file
reboot
I see the memory value has changed when I try to launch remote release, however it still doesn't work for me.
still nothing in busybox dmesg that I can see (output attached)
