My buddy that I've know for years is with Verizon and is due for an upgrade. This guy is a computer nut that loves to hack, tweak, customize etc. My nephew has a DX an absolutely loves it. My friend has never had an android phone and asked me to point him in the right direction.... I told him to get the DX. I'm going to help him root it and flash roms..... I have an evo and know it inside out and have flashed everything under the sun. When he does get it what custom rom do you suggest that has plenty of themes and bells and whistles? My nephew suggested Rubix and I'm not familiar with ANY of the DX roms. I want to start my friend on the right foot with android and have a few roms ready to flash for him so he loves the android community as much as I do. So if anyone could let me know what the top 5 roms to flash that would be awesome. Thanks in advance and bababooey to you all

Rubix Focused 1.9.7 is truly the fastest rom in terms of performance. Also the battery life is bar none. I use an extended battery and with normal use (not in my hand every minute) I have no problem getting two days on a charge. If you want a few extra features in an easy to use toolbox app than Liberty 1.5 is a great rom as well. I switch between the two whenever I'm bored and want a change. These are the only two roms worth a mention in my opinion if removing the blur and bloat is your intent.
This all depends on what you what you are looking for. I would suggest that you spend some time reading over the threads in Forum Droid X Android Development:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=691
I have only used two ROMs but did a lot of research on the most popular.
I am currently using Liberty 1.5 and I am loving it. It's Liberty ToolBox allows some heavy, yet easy, customization.
Yeah he's the kind of Guy that will be a flashaholic. I know I'm flashing new roms a few times a week on my Evo and I'm sure he'll be the same. Just wondering if the dx will keep him flashing.

Why is there no cm7 rom or gingerbread rom for the droid 2, it seems theres one for every other device except the droid 2 and droid x, i was just wondering
I am pretty sure that CM7 uses a custom kernel on their roms and as you know D2 and DX are locked up
oh, that sucks for us, but what about gingerbread im so ready to get a custom gingerbread rom...im tired of all these themed 2.2.1 roms
me too! is it just me or do some of these roms slow down on you after a while?
I know some devs don't want to release a gb rom until after moto releases its official gb update
It is my understanding that Gingerbread would require a change in kernal that can't be done due to it's locked bootloader. Though I could be wrong on that.
A bit related, but what about 2.2.2 rom that has all the security fixes?
Questions belong in the General section not in Android Development. I hate being that guy but we need to try and keep things organized. It helps people answering and helps those with questions get answered and have the answer in a convenient location.

sorry figured this had to do with development
GB will run just fine on the current kernel, this has already been discussed by devs on this very forum. Also, yes there is a wait for an official GB version from MOTO. Finally, CM7 is almost stable on DX (which can then be easily ported to D2). Blackdroid, from what I hear, has a fully functional GB ROM for DX, which will be ready once he sorts out some boot issues (it only boots once) (again, this will also easily be ported to D2).
The other reason it's taking so damn long is that the phones are locked down, making booting customs ROMs a difficult task in some cases, and a lot of work has to go into getting them stable and fully functional
Sweet!

Where did you here this? CM is pretty open about the fact that they don't develop for Droid 2/X/Pro because of the locked bootloader. The current CM7 ROM is for the OG Droid, not the Droid X.
I too am very curious about where you got the information about a semistable CM7 rom. I don't know if you're posting that just to get everyone excited for something we all thought wasn't possible or if we're (the people who didn't believe it was possible) just behind the times.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
It's been posted on the CM7 developers twitter that he is working on a version to be compatible with the DX.
But it should also be noted that he said it should theoretically work on the D2, but there won't be support because he doesn't have one to test it on.
His twitter name is cvpcs.
Very cool. Some one, or a collective bunch, needs to get that dev a dx and then I bet we would have a nice stable cm7 rom. Mmm, one can dream.

Oh well. I'm seeing what I can do to drop Motorola anyway...that Thunderbolt is looking pretty awesome! I know a few people with it and they're getting 30Mbps+ down & up speeds in the Minneapolis area.
From my understanding, HTC put a locked bootloader on the Thunderbolt as well. I may be wrong though, but if it is the case, that keeps me from going to it.

From what i read, the thunderbolt was locked but wasnt encrypted, so people already managed to crack it. The DX/D2/D2G/DPro all have locked bootloaders that are encrypted with a 1024 bit key, which is damn near impossible to break.

There is really no rom that is better than another, it's all your personal preference.
I prefer MIUI for the Customization options. You can choose from CyanogenMod 7, CyanogenMod 9, MIUI, Liberty, Vortex.
There are tons of options. I would recommend atleast trying MIUI and Vortex, as they're my two favorites.

Where can I get these roms? Xda? Or rootzwiki?
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
How about sticking with the good old stock ROM?
Advantages:
Largest user base, and by a very large margin.
No work needed to install it.
Automatic OTA updates by Verizon, even while you sleep.
Full technical support crew at Verizon store or via website; no need to hide your phone from them or play games like SBF before bringing your phone to them.
Most app developers test their apps against this ROM.
If something is really wrong with this ROM, very many people will complain.
Camera, video, HDMI output, Netflix, etc. all work fine.
There definitely are much worse ROMs out there that can cause excessive battery drain, cripple hardware features, cause certain apps to fail, etc.

Don't use Liquid Smooth
CM7 is my personal preference. However, I would advise that you stay away from Liquid Smooth if you are using ClockWork Recovery Mod. I installed Liquid Smooth and attempted to get into recovery, but got into an infinite Motorola Logo. I had to SBF to get out of it.

It is beta so couple things but it is definitely daily driver material. IIRC the only remaining issues are BT audio in calls, some hiccups in h/w acceleration, flash, and camcorder/panorama modes of the camera. The dev support is strong for this rom so it's only a matter of time b4 it's 100%. It's also your best bet to have ASOP ICS on your phone.
Best ROM out right now???

Not another one.....
Again, there is no "best rom". Everyone has their own opinion, and everyone has different wants/needs in a rom. Since you are rooted, just try out a few. That's the benefit of flashing roms, just make a backup, and if you dont like a new rom, flash another or reload your backup.

I can't get AOKP to run more than a minute (literally) without a random reboot and I have flashed my share of ROMs. Plus last I checked AOKP doesn't have everything working.
Your best bet for stable fully functional ROM is MikG3.0.
I'm liking AOKP but it still has some minor issues (being ICS, it's no surprise). I expect it to be my daily once everything is ironed out.
I'm using a tweaked CM7 for daily use, but I also really like the Mik roms.
I'm using the Ligux port from pspunderground. I'm not really into AOSP that much, but this is a great ROM. Very smooth.

On my evo i started compiling cm7.2 once a week or so then just wipe caches and flash the new one over the old i usually only compile when something new has been added that catches my eye or when several new things i dont really care about have been added the rest of the time im compiling cm9 for either the evo or my kindle fire and fixing to start compiling it for my et4g soon gotta figure out the ins and outs of this phone cuz its boot img is way different than my evo or fire

The cm9 on the evo isnt as smooth as the aokp yet it works pretty well on my fire but then again it only has wifi no cam no phone etc so alot of stuff can be left out for it , the evo however my last compile had battery issues and random forcecloses that were annoying ad hell but ive been having to mod the current ics kernel to play nice im hoping to find a devkit for a device or devices from htc with similar specs i can steal some drivers from to get the hardware working better right now im running 7.2 and only testing 9 for a day or so to see where i have it but atleast it boots up and most things will function once or twice before force close city kicks in

I am tired of flashing back to stock to get prl updates. Any favorite Sense roms? I am running the october 2011 stable release of cm7 and have been since late october without any real issue however my prl is getting really stale so I need to do something in the next week or two.
Edit- I should mention that I am looking for a fully functional daily driver sense rom. I looked through this list http://evo4g.roms-db.com/ and was hoping to narrow it down to one or two that others have tried/liked.
I require 4g radio, gps, 3g data, wifi and wireless hotspot (like cm7)

Even though its all about personal preferences, I was using Rainy Day, which was stable, smooth, and fast...battery life was ok. I'm currently running The Express latest build by OD and his team...awesome rom...very fast, great battery life even with heavy use!, stable, with a ton of space!
The express is a godly ROM, I switch roms a lot and and always find something, with express nothing is ever wrong, constantly updated with perks, and has themed and stock, the devs really know what thier doing, sense based but amazing, I love it so much, that's rare for me to say for a rom

Yeah, it's pretty slow here at XDA for our Droid X's but there's several active roms over at Rootzwiki that are being worked on. I've been running an unofficial CM9 beta over at Rootzwiki. It's pretty sweet even with the few things that still need some work.
I was under the assumption they weren't going to have ICS for the Droid X, but they would for the Droid X2. Oh well, time to play with my ol' Droid X.
Every rom on RootzWiki is the latest rom. They are regularly updated and each is running great.

CM7.2 RC1 was just released on Monday. Like others have said rootzwiki has a few projects going but I don't see a lot of updates coming out of any of them. Most of the time it's someone else picking up the project after someone else dropped it. Gave it a new build number and new name and that's about it lol.
Like was said above the DX rom scene is pretty active. There are 3 distinct ICS roms (cm9, miui v4, gummy) and several other active GB roms. Lots of choices
you could call me a developer although i am limited to just a few small things on another phone. I used to have a droid X when it first released until i had a few issues with it, specifically a low battery with an sbf so i had to do the usb trick with the battery which fried the board on the phone so i was no longer able to charge the battery through the phone(weird issue). I had to make a battery charger which worked very well, and i used it for about 4 months.. Finally my home button malfunctioned and acted as though it was stuck.
Anyways, I am acquiring a new X and will start some developement with that. So consider this an early entry into something that will be developed and then released.
Look in my signiture for links to my release on the Samsung Continuum.

I'm loving gummy v.0.9.0. Favorite rom on the DX so far. Only problem that bugs me is the garbled bluetooth calls. I have to take the phone out of the dock and change the output from bluetooth to speaker just to understand people.
