hi!
i modded the Stock android 4.0.3 launcher
so its the original one with some extras
i modded it for personal use
but a friend asked me to share it so here it is
enjoy
- transparent drawer
- options menu
enable/disable searchbar
resize any widget
show page indicator
fade indicator
auto-rotate screen

Flashable zip

INSTALL/problems
the launcher ONLY works on ICS (4.0.3)
you can download it and install it(but widgets dont work)
if you push it to system all works!
you can do so with the CWM flashable package
or you can download the APK and and copy paste it there(/system/app/) with a root file explorer (root explorer, es file explorer )
and adb is possible but for the ones that know adb this should not be any problem
if u run a STOCK ROM(cm9 not included)
and cant get it installed
i think its because the package name is the same as the original Ics Launcher2 (com.android.launcher)
so if u delete the original one from system/app and place the modded one there it should work!
No screenshots but a video so u can see all works (sorry for the bad quallity)

The transparent drawer is a nice addition.
Unfortunately, wallpaper scrolling does not work.

Nope.
Nova Launcher (based on 4.0.3) and ADW(2.x) both work fine. Your launcher and Trebuchet keep this bug. for example. Are you branching Trebuchet? If so, you might have inherited the bug.

Great work man! It looks great, it's exactly was I was looking for. One more thing last, BTW: you should make desktop icons disappear when opening the launcher. I mean... when you open the drawer, on the background you can still see the homescreens icons besides the wallpaper. It would be definitely amazing if only the wallpaper was showing as the drawer background... but I guess it won't be any difficoult for you!
Anyway, congratulations and thanks for your efforts! Can't wait for further optimizations ;D

While working on making the port of MIUI for the Kindle Fire more usable for the tablet I decided to take on modifying the launcher. After a bit of smali work I was able to allow the number of rows and columns in the launcher to be adjusted.
Although I originally intended this mod to be primarily for the Kindle Fire port of MIUI.us, I have received numerous requests for the modified apk. So, without further ado, I bring to the masses the MIUI Launcher with adjustable homescreen grid size. I started this mod with MIUI 2.1.13 so make sure you download the APK that goes with your version of MIUI.
Please note this will not work with other ROMs as it relies heavily on the MIUI framework.
Instructions
--------------------------------
1) Download the appropriate APK and place it in the root of your SD card
2) Rename the file to Launcher2.apk
3) Using either Root Explorer or ES File Explorer (with root privileges) copy the file to /system/app
4) Change the file permissions to -rw-r--r--
5) At this point your Launcher probably closed so press home to bring it back up. At this point it should be the new modified version. If not, just reboot your device.
6) Go to launcher settings and adjust the # of columns and rows you would like. hint: start out with small values and increase them as you see fit
7) Once you change the # of columns and rows press Reset Launcher to get the launcher to use the new settings.
8) Enjoy getting a little more room for your favorite apps and widgets.

Congratulations to those that actually took the time to read the OP. I applaud you for being part of the minority here on XDA. For those of you who do not take a minute to read the OP, well there isn't much to say. Because you won't be reading this and you will end up asking some stupid question that could have been answered by reading this. - |0xD34D|

Nope not just tablets. It started out as a need for something better on a tablet but it should work just as well on other devices.
The request I was receiving were for people that wanted to use it on their phone and it has worked well for them.

#1 is probably much more of a realistic possibility, while #2 would really take some work seeing as I am working in pure smali. That's not to say it can't be done, but with the way the MIUI launcher deals with widget placement, it may take quite a bit of work to implement it.

If I had the time to dig into such an endeavor, I would. Right now I have other projects that require my attention.
Who knows, I may need a little break and decide to give it a shot.
nice work bro!
i got a request for you
can you make the edits needed for this nice hack in the launcher2.apk in THIS zip?
the launcher2.apk included in the zip above does support scrollable widgets
and when you change the density the icons will remain all the same size
and the text label will be just under the icon instead of in the icon like in your screenshots
i hope you can look at it thanks
PS. the .13 launcher just works in the .20 rom

I'm not about to go and use another person's work without permission. I'll have to make sure it is alright with the original creator of that mod before using their work. I can however, look into what it takes to enable these features and just implement them myself. The icon title is an easy one so no worries there. Scrollable widgets however, I have not used so I'll have to take a look at them.

True, the 2.1.13 launcher does work, but there are some subtle differences in them that may or may not be an issue. If it works and there are no issues then great, but if there are it may be best to use the version that corresponds to the ROM.
Will this work on the ICS test 1.11.9 build? I'm not sure what the newer updates include as far as the code, but I figure they might include some of the stuff from 1.11.9

Nope not gonna work.
Let me try this one more time. It is for MIUI v2.1.13 or v2.1.20. Those version numbers are from the official miui.com versions.
If you change the grid size, your folders look terrible once opened.

Not working for me on MIUI 2.1.13 on HTC HD2 NAND
After replace of Launcher only Bootloop!
thx
working for me, thx for that!
only thing i really miss is the possibilty to deactivate the text label of the apps under the icons, because depending on the values i choose for gridsize the names overlap each other, so it would make sense if they could be deactivated.
do you think there is a possibility to include this feature? or could/would you tell me how i can do it myself?
greetz,

Can anyone make it for non miui Rom .
HTC Sense 3.5,Android 2.3.5
Great looking mod, any chance you can make a mod for MIUI 2.2.3?
you should try this one which i pulled from the switch-tweaks-pack made by prazaar, all credits go to him!
just copy it to /system/app overwriting the existing launcher in there (backup before!) and giving it rw-r--r-- permissions, then restart and that's it. if you experience any problems you could wipe cache and dalvik-cache and reboot again, but i don't think it is necessary.
i am using this one and it has customizable grid-size AND the possibilty to deactivate the text label of the apps under the icons and all the other stuff, too!
as always, i am not responsible for nothing bla...
greetz,

Ladies & gentlemen,
this is for everyone, who still prefers froyo, because it is stable, mostly bug-free (exception: scroll-bug) and has a long battery-life.
I tried a few GB-roms and CM9, but they all have issues, so I reverted back to froyo.
The sad thing is: if you once tried ICS, Froyo looks very frumpy compared to it.
Froyo has not a Theme-Chooser, so I decided to pretty up some parts of the base-rom by myself.
It will not be a one-to-one ICS copy, but rather something similar.
I started with this Froyo 2.2.2 rom as base: Light-v2 by kpbotbot

In the /system/framework - folder I modified the following files:
framework-res.apk
(icons, colors, power-menu)
android.policy.jar
(power-menu)
services.jar
(white font for the date in the notification bar)
lge-res.apk
(notification toggle buttons and their background, Carrier background and font color)
In the /system/app - folder I modified this files:
Browser.apk
Calendar.apk
CameraApp.apk
com.google.android.gm.apk [gmail]
Contacts.apk
DeskClock.apk
Mms.apk
PackageInstaller.apk
Phone.apk
Settings.apk
Here are the changes mostly done for the launcher icon and the menu icons. The important ones for the look of the dialer are the Phone.apk and the Contacts.apk.
By the way, I hate *.pro files.
Other used apps:
Launcher: Holo Launcher
Keyboard: IceCream Sandwich-ICS Keyboard
Clock Widget: Minimalistic Text
Extra Notification Toggles: Notification Toggle
If you want to use a 2.2.* rom with the new baseband, you will need this files:
http://db.tt/zV3jimCM (this is not a flashable zip)
Thank you, community for the tools and tutorials and thanks to simililar projects for sharing. Excuse my grammar
----------------------------------------------
Update (27. Oct. 2012)
I've replaced the files with an All-In-One flashable Zip for your Recovery.
It's my first selfmade flashable zip, so be carefully (tested it with TWRP-Recovery)
It includes all above + the libs for the new baseband.
Edit:
If you get bootloops with this zip, try this one:

Aha, thanks for reporting! I didn't noticed this yet.
There must be something wrong with the size of some png's. Maybe I will fix this in the next days.
Some other status bar icons also appear not correct (new gmail, calendar event)

Hello. There are 2 possibilities.
You rename the *.png to *.pro. Then open the APK in an archive manager (7zip, WinZip) and drag the file in there to replace the old one. With this workaround it is possible, that you will get a certificate error. See logcat if the app force closes. But in the most cases it will work.
Decompile the APK with your favourite tool. Then replace the *.pro files with *.png files without renaming. Take care of the *.9.png files, because in the decompiled apk the "9" is not visible. You will see them if you open the apk in 7zip. In the end you have to recompile the APK.
Hopefully I could help.

it's not possible to make one theme work for all, for example if i used your theme with Cataclysm ROM i will lost the Cataclysm setting tab inside the setting app, and it might not even boot because your framework-res.apk is incompatible.
we are changing the color.xml and style.xml values in Value folder and after recompile the app those files will be inside the resources.arsc file and what inside this file is different from ROM to ROM and that's why you have to do it one by one.
anyway most of the ROM developer don't touch those files so if you just decompile the apps and replaced the files with your's every thing should go smoothly.
try that and if you need further help please PM me
Not a major problem but the Navigate text is quite hard to recognize..

Yeah this is exactly what i was trying to say, @androidous ... it sucks. but this will have to be the route we have to take for lollipop, unfortunately
unless, like i said earlier, someone more experienced comes up with a breakthrough of some kind -- im not holding my breath for that one though
There is an easy work around for the black on black and white on white text. Its not perfect but it gets the job done.
Settings->Accessibility->High Contrast Text.
This will put a line around the text to help make it stand out more.
How to undo the theme other than do a backup?

Flash the system.img from the original rom.zip file
If / when there is another update to the ROM then we would have to revert the system.img back before flashing correct?

Just dirty flash the whole ROM (and updates) again. The original ROM zip file does not contain a system.img like Google Stock/factory image.

Might be correct for stock. But Cataclysm does not have a "system.img"...

This guide will help you activate "Round Icons" on your android device. Take note that round icon isn't provided by launcher but the app itself. Every app that supports round icon will provide two type of icons (normal and rounded), so what will we do is enabling it using the round icons provided by different OEMs by changing the framework-res.apk in our devices.

Requirements:
- OxygenOS Open Beta 3 based on Android Nougat 7.1.1
- Custom ROM based on Android Nougat 7.1.1
- Must be rooted!
- Root Explorer
Navigate to this location: \root\system\framework\
Replace the current framework-res.apk file to the modified framework-res.apk which can be downloaded here.
Note: It is recommended to copy it from recovery, but you can also copy it directy via root explorer but your device will restart instantly
Last is clear the pixel launcher data
App Info -> Storage -> Clear Data
What I only did is I edited the \framework-res\res\values\bools.xml and change the value from
<bool name="config_useRoundIcon">false</bool>
to
<bool name="config_useRoundIcon">true</bool>
This will trigger the launcher to use the round icon of any apps that are supported.

Really?
It's literally the first requirement in the OP and it's also in the title.
I'll tell you an easier way..
Get Nova launcher..
Get pixel icon pack.. Both free..
Set the icon pack in look and feel.. Activate the drag up from setting in the launcher..
NO root needed..
NO custom rom needed..
Noob free method..
Thanks me later..
Circle icons like these are SO ugly. Who on earth would want these? So lazy.

No. I don't know if this icons apply only in the launcher or apply in everything, for example in recents apps.
To op: does it applies in recent apps too?

Using nova launcher and choosing a circular icon pack turns all icons circular, not just what is in your dock.

I did this mod some days ago on LineageOS. It applies everywhere except inside the Play Store.
For example, you will see the regular square like icon of Gmail on the app's page, but the circular icon will be displayed everywhere else once it's installed. Recents and all.
After do it.. some app can't open, such as facebook, messeger, telegram,...

Yup, it's system-wide.
Good luck on that! Installing a third-party launcher and app when you can easily enable it in a snap. Provided that you are rooted, of course!

What if you don't like the inconsistency and tackiness of Nova Launcher and want it system-wide on a nicer launcher?
And just to be clear. This isn't going to work on 7.0 ROMs right?

If you do it manually, yes. Using the APK from OP on a ROM other than OB3 will bootloop.

Here's an idea: give us more detail. No one can figure out what you have unless you EXPLAIN.
