[Q] Taking my sms from rom to rom? - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there,
is there any possibility to get my short messages from one custom rom to the other?
I love switching roms, and of course i alway make NAND Backups, but everytime I install a new rom, my SMS are gone, and i dont like it
It would be great if there was some kind of file, i need to copy, or restore or whatever to have them secured.

There are several options to do this...
I'm using SMS Backup & Restore: https://market.android.com/details?...mNvbS5yaXRlc2hzYWh1LlNNU0JhY2t1cFJlc3RvcmUiXQ
Another option is to extract your sms from the nandroid with AppExtractor:
https://market.android.com/details?...wxLDEsImNvbS5oYW5keWFuZHkuYXBwZXh0cmFjdG9yIl0

Another vote here for SMS Backup and Restore. It saves them as an XML file so you can copy them off to another device as well if you want. It's also pretty intelligent about restoring stuff from the backup, for example it can avoid restoring messages that are already on the phone, and you can restore individual conversations rather than the whole backup.

Thanks

Awesome guys, thanks for the fast help
and again i see, xda-community is the best

Always best One more u can use is Titanum Backup for almost all posibble backups

I always use Go SMS backup service, it's easy and fast, also you can use XML for backup that could be usable in other places.

I use mysms (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mysms.android.sms) This app stay in sync with cloud... And i can read and send message without my phone - from web!

Ne careful when you switch your sms between an ICS and a non-ICS rom, the data has not the same form.

[Q] Possible To Restore Apps, Without Titanium???

Hello everyone,
I'm not the type of person to ask for the answer and get the quick way out...I like to try and research, read and read more before asking for help.
Here is the problem:
Before I flashed my phone...I plugged in the usb and copied all folders and files on the SD card to a folder on my pc, just incase.
Then I followed the instruction to install a custom rom...I used Iced Glacier. I rebooted the phone and the Iced rom worked...after checking out the phone, to see what the Iced rom was all about, I realized I didnt use Ti to make a backup of all apps.
Here is the question:
Can I use the folders/files I copied to the pc, to add the apps back to the phone?
Thanks in advance for any help,
BK
Short answer is no...
If you had backup enabled with Google, your apps should auto install when you log into the market. Most of your data will be lost though...
Did you make a nandroid backup of your ROM? If you did, you could now backup your new install, restore your old system backup, use Titanium to backup everything from your old system backup, then switch back to your new install and use Titanium to restore everything...?

First I want to thank you for taking out the time. I truly appreciate the help.
I read and re-read what you wrote...I kinda of understand but am not sure if the correct steps to take. When you get a chance, can you please try and explain further.
Thanks so much,
BK
What he is asking is did you make a backup of your stock rom before flashing ice-glacier? If so just go back into rom manager and restore your backup. After restoring, personally i prefer my backup root, because it backs up everything texts, bookmarks ect qnd it is one click for that stuff and one click for all your apps with their data instead of clicking once for each app. After doing your backup reflash I-G and redownload my backup root, run it and everything will be there
That's exactly what I meant...
Also, Titanium has a batch option in the menu, so you can one click backup and restore with Titanium also (you have to have the paid version for it to be effective, though)...

thanks for the info...but have another question related to this.
I did make a backup before flashing...but here is the problems I'm trying to understand.
From what Im trying to gather about using custom roms, is that it does not install any bloatware.
So, if that is true and I use a app like backup root...will this just install every single app that was on the phone.
Im just trying to wrap my brain around this, sorry if it is very newbish

Depends on your definition of "bloat". Every ROM contains a collection of system applications.
Keep in mind. Nandroid backups are standalone system images. Titanium Backup and MyBackup and all the other Android apps that do backups are individual application backups. They often can do bulk restores, but that is not always desired or necessary.
You will find you will want both types of backup: Nandroid, and application.
You can also selectively backup and restore apps, so you get to chose what stays, and what goes...
Play around with Titanium and My Backup, and see what they are capable of...

[Q] Using SMS Backup & Restore to go between Sense and CM7 or Sense based GB rom?

I made a backup of my texts using SMS Backup & Restore, and want to know about flashing a different type of rom, such as MIUI, CM7, or one of the Sense based GB roms out there. Are there any issues in restoring text messages created on one type of rom, and restoring them to another type of rom? According to the app description, it saves the texts to XML, so I don't think that would cause issues, unlike Titanium Backup can, if you restore settings between two different types of roms.
The one I use backs up my sms through my gmail account. I can switch to either sense or aosp based roms and my messages are fine

nope you are good to go. Been using sms backup and restore for a while now. Make sure you have it schedule to backup at all times.
Also when switching ROM, it is always a good idea to "manually" backup you texts before wiping...

not this fast when u have 3500 sms shared with your gf
GoSMS Pro has problems restoring a lot of messages. I just tried restoring 10 000 messages. Both Stock and GoSMS are freezing after the 3-hour long restore. Can't get any of my messaging apps to work.

best way to backup phone for rom swap?

i'm really getting tired of redoing my info every time i try a new rom... i know froyo is supposed to be able to back up user info but it seems we dont' get that option from sammy. i always back up my apps with titanium but what about the contact list, phone settings, passwords, bookmarks, etc... something that would transfer between roms
mybackup root.
Umm...nandroid? Do a backup and flash rom, then do a selective restore and only restore data. works everytime for me except when downgrading gingerbread back to froyo. Other than that I occasionally use mybackup root

+This, and I suggest not to move any apps you download to system/app, or else you'll have to restore system to get those back, and it causes problems.

No but just keep a copy on your sd card. It's the one exception.
I know its a pain but a fresh Install us always the best. I use an app called "appbak" and its so easy. U backup your apps and its just like a text file. Then u restore them and it gives you all your Apps in a list. U for down the list one by one and when you click on the app it will take u directly to that app in the market. Then u just download it. Its pretty fast and it gives u a fresh Install. Then ill use titanium to restore some data for some if my apps.

i do that with titanium.. i long click the app and press go to market. then i download it from there. installing apps from titanium always seems to lock up. its really the phone settings and addressbook that i'm interested in at this point. i'm sick of adding my accounts, deleting unwanted contacts, changing notifications settings etc, etc

I haven't found a good way around having to enter my gmail account info each time (especially since I've been going back and forth between froyo and GB roms so nandroid backup isn't a good option) but I do keep my contacts organized in gmail, not on the phone, so whenever I do flash a new rom, it just automatically syncs the contacts and I never have to worry about them.
Titanium backup is the best for me.

My Backup wouldn't restore the last backup I made with it, even though the files on the SDcard were fine.
I've switched to Titanium root and it's been reliable so far.
titanium backup pro works. It might restore some older not needed apps but you can take them out later. You can take out any app or info even system apps, info, data.

My Backup has never successfully restored anything for me. Titanium has been perfect and I've been using it since I got this phone nearly a year ago, though it doesn't do SMS so I also use SMS Backup & Restore, a little freebie from the market which so far has worked well (though I've only tried it a few times).
I agree, Titanium Pro works great. I too also use SMS Backup & Restore for text messages.
Clockwork Mod does all that and then some. Just do a backup in clockwork, install new rom, go back into clockwork/backup&restore/ advanced restore/ and restore data only. It will restore all contacts/texts/picture mail/logins/passwords/apps+app data, etc, all data that doesnt interfere with the new rom.

Moving from Sense 3.0 to MIUI -How to keep messages?

Hey guys,
I'm currently running Android Revolution HD 6.1.4 and I want to move to a MIUI based ROM, the only thing stopping me is that I want to keep some specific SMS and MMS messages but I can't find a way to backup AND restore MMS messages. Some claim to do it but I have heard of people having issues going between different ROMs.
Can anyone link me to a guide or app that can allow me to backup and restore SMS and MMS messages that will work going from Sense to MIUI?
I am unable to buy apps so if you suggest an app please consider this.
Thank you and sorry if this is in the wrong section.
Use mybackup root. You can download it in market.

Every time i've changed ROM i have made a backup of all SMS on my phone. I use Sms backup+. Unfortunately I'm a new member and I can't post any link to this application, but it's very easy to find it on Android Market.
It uploads all your text messages to your gmail account and afterwards once you've installed your new ROM, you just download the app again and reset all the messages! Works very well, and also it's free!
Good Luck!
I use smsbackuprestore its simple, free and works with any from and any SMS application, even worked when I moved from MIUI on my inspire to my galaxy nexus
even Titanium Backup pro is brilliant, works all the time for me
Afaik, tit backup doesn't backup the messages itself. Anyway, when I restore a backup (full backup ofc), my sms messages are not restored
I use SMSbackup & Restore seperately... I don't know if this backups mms messages as well

Why are U unable to buy apps?
Titanium Backup Pro works great, and you can backup too many other things, such as your score in games, some of your configuration settings...
running smsbackup+ here to,
run the app, backup to gmail, and then restore, worked perfectly for me. no matter what rom i am using.
i solved the massive amount of sms being restored back after a couple of months by simply assigning them a different label in gmal. so im still able to find them if i need, but wont overfill my phone.
I use gosms to make a backup file in my SD card, install new rom and then gosms to restore all SMS from backup.
Yours truly.
SMS Backup+ is a very great choice. Easy upload of your files to your gmail account. Hassle free.!! Do try it.
Here is the link
I also use SMS Backup+. It works perfectly fine.
The only one I know that backs up both sms and mms including pictures is Sprite Backup. Check it out.
I removed the original SMS app and installed Go SMS pro. There are built-in backup/restore functions in Go SMS pro.
I always use SMS Backup & Restore, incredibly easy and quick to get them off your sd card and back into your SMS app

I used Mybackup pro, used from gingerbread sense to ICS, and back lol.
I'm also using SMS Backup+ . No problems so far
I always use a combination of titanium backup and mybackup. Just back up all your data with both of them, then after restoring with titanium fill up what is left out with mybackup..

[Q] What do i have to backup before changing rom?

Applications backup but not cache or data?
System backups?
Sms and call logs?
And system backups?
Are those all to do? If i backup those, when i restore, will i be able to have my desktop widgets, desktop icons sorted correctly ?
I think the best answer is "it depends on what you want to restore to".
When I change roms, I make a full backup using CWM, that way, no matter what the new rom breaks, I can go back to exactly where I was before.
But if you really want the new rom and think the problem is in one app or setting, you can backup only the apps .apk, the apps data and the rom settings, then you can restore everything individually and see where the problem is.
This all assuming you are not changing major android versions (like from froyo to gingerbread) or not changing roms "types" (like from stock to CM or to miui). If you are, then the partial backup is not recommended since it may not work.
In this last case, your best hope is to backup the apps .apk and store all other data somewhere where you can import to android (like storing the contacts in google account), since you shouldn't really restore anything else.

I want a full back up; calendars sms call logs applications data system data etc. For sms i use go-sms backup, i hope it will restore without any problem. When i backup with cwm and restore, will my settings (system( be protected as before?
With CWM if you restore you will get all data, including Rom, Kernel, sms, calls, etc All you data that is in internal memory. Don't worry. If you restore it, you will get the phone like it was when you made the backup.
Titanium capabilities
I was wondering if it is possible to backup app (with their data), sms and contacts....all in one go using Titanium (non-pro version) (I think we call it batch backup)? I am totally new to the ROOTING and CUSTOM ROM worlds and I am literally freaking out with all the huge info on this topic on the internet. I am using a CM10 on I9000. Please help!
Yes i wonder too.
Boot in recovery
select backup to ext sd
run...
you have back up everythin like ghost in pc....
( so you can try another rom and if you dont like it restore your back up and you have you old rom
working with all data app contacts etc )
you must youse the same cwm version for restore with the one that you use for backup

Are you attempting to backup so that you can move the apps/sms/settings to the new ROM or backing up in case you want to restore? Titanium backup is probably the thing you want in the former case and either with cwm backup or with linux dd backup in the latter. Personally I had problem moving system settings between roms, but apps should work just fine.
