[Attn] battery life tips

As I've noticed people ate flooding the threads with battery issues
I thought some tips might help
1. Wipe battery stats once and only doing it when switching between liberated and cm6, don't do it everytime u flash over a newer version of the rom
2. Use minimal brightness and do not use auto, although it may seem like it helps it doesn't, someone told me this and explained basically using the sensor wastes more batter than it saves
3. Use minimal data and get into the habit of shutting it off right after your done or set it on 2g for those who need the notifications, yes it might take a few seconds more to download but its better than the phone being dead
4. Don't let the phone completely die its bad for the battery, I've got into the habit to charge it every night even if it is full and its shown improvement
5. Leave the thing alone!!! If you need the phone don't play games, or anything else that drains it

To contribute: Lithium batteries are most definitely temperature sensitive. When possible, take it out of your pocket, bag, etc. The hotter it is, the more it drains.

^ that is a very important thing as Lithium Ion batteries do not react well to being deep cycled. It is actually recommended that you charge at no less than 35% to prevent the battery " memory" from retaining half charge and reporting full. Almost all new lithium ion batteries are manufactured with a microchip attached to a PCB. This maintains battery function and also allows your phone to report what the current charge, temp, and health of your battery is.

How do we set Aria to 2g ? I want to turn off 3G however not finding any option. Battery life is terrible with Aria.

I've seen a couple posts, in other forums, that a task killer will hurt battery life more than improve it. Is this true? If so, why?
Also, I wiped battery stats more than I should've. Did that do permanent damage or will it fix itself over time?

some programs you cant kill so it makes the cpu jump to 100% which drains the battery
i personally find out which programs pop back up and put them on a ignore list to make it drain less
it isnt permanent it will fix over time just charge it fully and dont let it go past 15% and it should improve over time

If your in a 3g saturated area the 3g will contantly swap towers even with screen off, when i first got my phone i could sit and watch the battery level drop about 1% every 10 seconds to get around this open phones dialer and dial *#*#4636#*#* and under phone status select gsm only you use same method to swap back to WCDMA prefered for 3g if you need to use wifi tether or need high speed but this was like a whole new phone for me battery wise. will be neet if there is an app that enables 3g for like browser or maps or something like that and then swapps back to edge when not using something that would need it. if there is already one out there lemme know i could use it.

but will charging it overnight bad for it? so it dosnt overcharge? i thought i heard someone say that so i try to charge it before i go to bed then charge more in the morning but i wasnt sure if Li batteries would overcharge or not
edit: nevermind i just read that it is not possible to over charge a batty but it is bad to leave it charging for more than 24 hours because it will over heat and can cause internal damage to battery and to phone

Been running it on my Aria on CM6.1-RC1. So far running as advertised. In areas with weaker 3g coverage, switching to 2g has cut my battery usage in about half. I've really only used this to turn off 3g, as I need 2g on all the time for push gmail and im, and am using setCPU for cpu clocking.

i am running Liberated FR006, and have no plans on switching to anything else (maybe the official 2.2 release, but not likely). when should/can i wipe battery data? i've had the phone since june and havent wiped it.

Interesting. I was wondering about this the other, thinking that perhaps my battery life has gotten worse since I put the phone in a silicone case. Is that perhaps holding heat in/creating overheating and battery drainage?

Lately I've been running the latest update of the same ROM (Nonsensikal Froyo - now 15.2) without any CPU apps (no o/c'ing through script either), no autokiller, no battery tweaks (just Juice Plotter) only 1 widget (Fancy Widget Pro), JIT enabled, VM heap @32, compcache @18 (default) and depending on which app I look at, TiB or RE, I have +/-110mb of free RAM, very minimal apps. Also, I upgraded to CFSv9. I even bought a Seidio Innocell 1750mh extended life battery. I recalibrate my battery after flashes ....
Oh yeah, a little more info, I am not a power user, just an average user with poor to ok reception, I tend to use wireless at my house b/c reception out here in the woods ain't good, but turn it off when not needed. I use airplane mode during sleeping hours as well. The max of my battery usage is Display, then And OS.
Ok, now the question ..... If I don't use airplane mode, I get maaaaaay-be 6-8 hours of average phone usage, usually less !!
What finally broke me to PM you now is that (i recently put numbers on my battery icon) while typing a text message earlier (a few minutes tops, not on wireless) I watched my battery click down from 50 to 48 !!!
When I charge my phone full & I easily lose 10% in half an hour (I've tried this with SetCPU, JD, CBT, Super Power, CPUBoost Lite - I think you get the gist) ... and not including airplane mode, I NEVER get more than 6-8 hours of battery life !!!
Is there any knowledge that you can give me on this issue or have I pretty much exhausted my options ? I am this PM short of resigning to crappy battery life

What does the phone/Spare Parts say is using all the battery? Have you tried flashing and then using the phone without installing apps (other than the essentials?) Are you leaving the phone idle, screen off, and noticing the same big drop?
You could try going to stock for a bit to see if it improves...or trying a different ROM. Maybe you have a dud battery?
Edit: Sorry, you may have meant this to be directed at someone specifically.

Just an observation. If you're not using anything to overclock the phone maybe the battery life would be better if you at least underclock it. I suggest Conap's CPUBoost Lite, free on the market and here. Just set the minimum frequency to 245760 (my suggestion), and I currently have the screen off Minimum to 19200 and the screen off Maximum to 480000.
Also, I used to use Juice Plotter. I theorized that maybe Juice Plotter wasn't great for my battery itself.

I noticed the same thing when I used Juice Plotter. I got significantly less battery life when i had it. Try deleting Juice Plotter and see if you get more life out of your battery.

well you've noted your in a poor coverage area, and that is your problem, nothing can completely fix other than moving, but you may want to research flashing a new radio, becareful and check your md5 hash sums

Actually, the Verizon Network Extender can definitely help without moving. http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/accessory?action=gotoFemtocell
It's $250, but probably a lot cheaper than moving, and it should help with battery life. It does with me - I get 24-32 hours on a 1750 battery, with WiFi on all of the time (I have the old, non-3G extender.)

I'm running Tazz Froyo and get a minimum of 24 hrs on stock battery. I would try changing roms.

Battery life on my eris was never good, that's why you buy a extended battery. I have the biggest one that they have on amazon and my battery can last for five days with average use

so my battery has been draining really fast too, but my question is does the battery recalibration work? some people have said their battery drops even faster but is that only the first time?
PS. ive been on xtrrom for awhile now (like a month and a half) and it just started dropping. spare parts says android system is greater than the rest, if that helps

Yes, it works if you do it propely. Charge phone to 100%, boot into recovery, wipe battery stats, reboot phone. Use your phone as normal until the battery is fully discharged and it shuts the phone off. I sometimes try to turn it back on also just to make sure it is all the way dead. Plug your phone in to charge it, walk away, don't touch it until it is 100% charged. Turn your phone on and use it as normal. It sometimes will take a few times charging it to see a difference. If I missed anything or mistyped anything some one correct me please lol

With light use im now at 28 percent going on 38 hours since last plugged in. anyone else noticing way better battery performance?

The only way you could have that on a stock battery is have the phone off and battery pulled out for 34 hours.

I'm getting a lot better life with the overclocked kernal and midnight eb13. 8hrs of moderate usage and was only down to 55%. I'm loving it.

I am running through the stock battery AND the 3500mah battery each day on EB13. I dont know if its my usage has changed or what, but EB13 is a battery hog. Lost 25% from my 3500mah battery overnight as I was sleeping. LOL.

Discussing this over at the supernova rom. Something is wrong...battery life is bad for some people.

keep an eye on your TWS. This has been a huge issue for me, and keeps draining the life out of the battery. Only solution so far seems to be the ariplane mode toggle work around.

I was able to make 30+ hours on a single full charge with dk28.
I still haven't put eb13 through its paces but from what I'm seeing, its great with battery.

if you all want better battery life then disable your data network ...the way to do this is hold down the power button ...just like you are turning your phone off, you will see the data network. hit that button..it will disable your internet constantly running in the back ground and also will disable notifications...you can turn it on at your discression when you want to check your email, internet, or anything pertaining to data network...but trust me this will give you alot more battery life..also you can install setcpu and clock it to run lower when your phone is charging, not in use , or even when you are using your phone...this also helps substantually...good luck guys

0% TWS. TWS is solved in EB13 for me.

Very nice suggestions I'd also like to add that using Wifi will use a LOT less battery then 3G probably 80% of the time. At work I have poor reception so leaving 3G on will kill my battery, however WiFi it's not uncommon I leave work after 10 hours unplugged with only 20-25% of the battery used! Make sure to set the wifi sleep policy to never if you go this route, that way it never goes back to 3G even when sleeping.
Turning data off completely and using the phone only lightly all day at work (a few text messages) (10 hours unplugged) i've left work with 88% percent battery remaining

Battery life has improved greatly. I turn off background data, stop the Omadrmblablabla service, no live backgrounds, but it is full color. With moderate use I can see 10 hours and still have 40% before I go to bed.

My battery life has been greatly increased too. The battery indicator seems much more accurate too. I did the factory reset several times, then wiped and used the samsung installer.

I wish I could be as lucky as you. This is by far my biggest complaint with eb13. I have tried flashing multiple times to no avail. How did you update? odin, samsung exe, update zip, or ota?

I did an odin flash, and my battery is much better as well. On 2.1 stock I would usually get about 16 hrs with my usage. Now, with the same usage on EB13, I can get about 36hrs (charging every other night).
I did the zip update first, and my battery was awful and only lasted for 4 hours. But since the odin flash, everything is great!

Samsung exe. Did you update your profile and PRL? I had TWS issues until I did that. After updating the PRL I have been golden.

PRL fix will only last til you reboot I think. Have you rebooted since PRL udate?

But as for myself, I'm getting way better battery on eb13. I think some people have bad experiences sure to installing done apps rgat may run in the back ground. Do this test, reflash stock. Don't install any apps but what thee phone comes with. And use the phone for 2 days. Then you will notice rgat index outer does last longer.

I have tried that as well, no dice. Only the airplane toggle seems to fix it. I have to airplane toggle every time I boot up. Once I do that the TWS is around 2-5% which is normal for me.

exactly. If it does fix it (seems sporadic at best), it will not stay applied after a reboot.

TWS = time without signal. Airplane mode resets the radio on the device and somehow fixes it (albeit, temporarily). I read somewhere on here people believe it has something to do with the fact that, for some reason, the phone is looking for a gsm signal as well as cdma, and since this is not a gsm phone, it obviously can't find a gsm signal. The constant searching for gsm is causing a drain on the battery. This happens in areas with full sprint coverage, like my house. For whatever reason re-setting the radio forces it to stay on cdma mode only. I think i read someone saying something along the lines of it being a problem because this is was an update created for devices across the board, ie, for both cdma and gsm handsets. Its just a bug that needs addressed. Some people have it, some don't -- which is even more frustrating!
If you are not experiencing this problem, please tell me what method you used to update. I have only tried Odin (and update zip once), so I will try the samsung exe to see if it does anything.

Battery Saving Tip

Hey Guys,
Not sure if anyone has ever posted this but I thought I would share how I am able to get 2 days plus on single charge...
I only recomend this if you are not totally dependent on your email, facebook, gtalk, etc to sync.
I have my email accounts on my phone but I don't need to receive them instantly meaning they are not dire important so this works for me.
Android's biggest battery killer, which most of you probably know, is data syncing in background and just data connection in general. What I personally do is keep 3G data off at all times by going to settings->wireless and networks->mobile networks->3G Data and uncheck it.
Obviously with this off, you wont be able to connect to web, get emails, download apps, etc... But if you live in a 4G area like me, all I do every once in awhile is flip on 4G from dropdown let it sync or do what I got to do then flip 4G back off so there is no connection anymore... This will save so much of your battery but it is up to you to check things when you need to....
I hope this helps some people because it helps me a lot... I always recommend this to customers that come in my store if they are not depending on work email and such...

I have done those things since I've had this phone in august and everytime I talk about getting great battery life the haters come out and say well you didn't have sync on blah blah. Freaking retards. Especially if you are sleeping why not turn off sync for the email that is not going to come anyways. I haven't seen the battery life yet as I did since eclair though.

I know they can say all they want but it works I keep getting 2 or 3 days

You can get juice defender to do this automatically as well. You can also have it only activate data when the screen is on or for certain apps. Just sayin

Personally, I think juice defender is crap and battery life doesn't save as much as doing it yourself... Im just saying...

Actually my biggest killer is display. Our devices our the only ones with 90%+ battery usage for display, yet they advertised that it required 20% less battery!

I know! The display is a killer but even so doing this with full brightness and I can still push a day and a half... I usually keep my brightness all the way down though and manage to push upto 3 days...

I get 56 hours using Ultimate Juicedefender.

Wow...i use to get great battery life. I'm using lowest brightness setting, sfr, and ultimate juice defender and getting only like 16 to 24 hours of life.
What else are you guys doing? I use to get 50 hours but not anymore..
I thought I knew all the tricks in the book. But I use my phone constantly. Above average I would say.

I am not sure, I keep lowest brightness and keep data off almost all day except for occasional checking but maybe 10 minutes total of data being on... I have noticed with EC05 battery life lowered even on complete stock... Most people in my store hve epics and all have suffered worse battery since the update... It didnt matter if it was OTA or OTW...
Maybe try and get a new battery...

I think the reasons the 'haters' come out is simply because you're stating your getting better battery life and then revealing you're castrating your phone. It is a smartphone after all. It's supposed to do all those things you turn off. This isn't a phone which is only supposed to make calls. I mean, if I wanted to check my email once a day, I'd simply do it while I'm in front of a computer.
I don't believe I'm one of said-haters but possibly providing a bit of information on where they're coming from as well.
I think it's well documented that Android phones pretty much suck in terms of battery life, especially when compared to Blackberry. Man, RIM got it right on that aspect.

How is that castrating your phone? I can still do everything else on the phone... You don't need a constant data connection to use it like a PDA. Do all tabs have a constant data connection? No, so are they not going to be considered PDA because they lack internet sometimes? no
I am sorry to say but if your managing your phone and doing things to better, that is not castrating, that is good device management and what should be done so it runs how you want...

Well, it sorts of like taking a porsche and not pushing it past 2nd gear. Some people are happy with it, some are not. On one hand, battery saving posts can be thought as misleading, if the premise is that you dont compromise any functionality. I prefer to charge my phone everyday and not worry about battery, but when your battery is dying when you need it in the evening, than one is of a different opinion entirely.
One thing which I realized to late, is if you are at work in the office or somewhere with wifi, you can toggle 3G off and not lose any functionality, since wifi uses a lot less juice.

I have tried I new battery, I have three that I alternate between. I have no idea what has happened to my phone. It could be the phone itself

Well, it sorts of like taking a porsche and not pushing it past 2nd gear. Some people are happy with it, some are not. On one hand, battery saving posts can be thought as misleading, if the premise is that you dont compromise any functionality. I prefer to charge my phone everyday and not worry about battery, but when your battery is dying when you need it in the evening, than one is of a different opinion entirely.
One thing which I realized to late, is if you are at work in the office or somewhere with wifi, you can toggle 3G off and not lose any functionality, since wifi uses a lot less juice.

And I did say from the beginning what it does and what you loose from it... The only reason it was posted was to try and help people who may be newer to android and needing to squish extra minutes out of their phone for the day... Or they may find themselves not near a charger and almost dead and need their phone so turn off data to preserve the battery... I mean it doesn't "cripple" your phone to turn off data... I can still play angry birds, check my calendar, call people, text, etc. You don't need your phone to have data to use its features...

Have you tried reflashing stock ECO5 and starting from scratch? The only time I started noticing a big difference and I reflashed to stock and customed it again it fixed it...
But you're right, the phone could be giving out...

Alright, nobody probably remembers me, but thats okay! Lol
Anyway, my flashing addiction has unfortunately been starving due to being way too busy with work and such. BUT I FINALLY HAVE FREE TIME! Haha,
So I'm still on Froyo, Syndicate's Frozen ROM (Yeah I know I'm two android versions behind). So I was wondering, whats the steps to going to CM9?
My current setup is:
Syndicate frozen ROM
CWM3
Genocide Kernel
EH17 Modem
Don't get me wrong, I'm not new to any of this, I'm just wondering what the exact steps are if theres anything fancy that needs to be done coming from such an old setup? Or is it as simple as:
Odin stock DK28
Root
Odin CWM(What number are we on now? Link please?)
Flash CM9
Flash Gapps?

Flash cm9 it will reboot and install the update then boots up during the animation pull the battery go back in and flash the gapps viola cm9

Not unless you wanna update the modem. You could flash the new EL30.tar with odin, flash cwm5, then flash cm9 in cwm5.

Not bad at all for an Alpha only a few weeks old for us. Minor bugs that not everyone experiences. A lot of us are using it as a daily. Battery life is not good because it uses a lot of resources. It was meant to run on phones with twice the RAM.

Cm9 runs good. Battery life was a deal breaker for me and it was a bit sluggish. I just barely came from srf 1.2 ef02 genocide 2.0 myself (which was rock solid and superfast).
I settled on gleangb for now.

Battery life is decent enough for my tastes. The only bugs I'm experiencing now is some tearing in video playback and some minor artifacts in video recording (sometimes). Other than that it's pretty rock solid imo.

Battery life for me is very good on ics. But its not my primary running OS due to its bugs.

Please stop talking about things that you don't understand. Battery life has little to do with the RAM usage. CM9 alpha4 for me is easily goes 28 hours battery life with a 1.5 year old original 1500mah Epic battery. The trick is to prevent wakelocks, I'm usually ~90% in deep sleep. I disable LED notifications, all haptic feedback, notifications for anything that uses push data (Facebook, gmail, email, etc.) I get an extra ~8 hours battery life if I use Juice Defender to turn off 3G data and Wifi when the screen is off. It takes a little delay for data to start again, but that is acceptable to me. If all my push data notifications are turned off anyway, why bother having data enabled at all?
If someone really needs to contact me they can SMS or Call, which causes both vibrate and sound. Otherwise I'll see messages when I too often turn on the phone screen.

Pretty much my exact same setup, I got tired of using Juice Defender because of the lag to start data back up but when I was using it I was getting around 33 hours. I don't use my phone much except for calls and sms so this works fine for me.

I really respect you and all that you do for us but with all due respect, using your phone for more than just a phone on CM9 eats up the battery pretty quickly. Browsing XDA, polling 4 business email accounts, or on the web uses about 50% more battery than it did on CM7. It was mentioned at initial release how it was meant to run on phones with twice the RAM which attributes to it's sluggishness and lower battery life. I know each Alpha just gets better and better and that is awesome but it will be a while if at all that it can compete with something like CM7 for battery life. I am sure with the same setup you have you can get 50% more battery life on CM7.

Agreed I pulled 5 hours of display on cm7 and can't hardly pull 2h 45m on cm9 same setup no wakelocks no sync browsing xda undervolting as far as my phone will handle..nothing helps. Had to get a 3500mah to compensate the gigantic battery usage and am lucky to 5h45m on it over 13hrs uptime. However we all use our phones differently and to you @wtogami you may see no difference, however for others it drops like a rock.

Yeah if you just stare at your phone while the screen is off and dont do anything haha. But even still with my stock battery haha not even 6 to 7 hours it would be dead. with a 3500 it last longer but its not worth it right now.
Once CM9 progresses to CM7 state then it might be worth it. Still ICS requires more ram so yeah your battery is going to die faster because of memory swapping. IDC what anyone says ICS on our phones still would not last as long as GB.

Plus there was no reason to be rude about. I may not be a DEV but I know how Android works with resource swapping and memory clearing.

Exactly i don't understand why everyone starts retaliate and then the only way to reply is retaliating back, if not then they pass on by. Its so frustrating

Hi, I noticed ics charges faster.

I absolutely love when people who don't build the ****, don't know how to, and couldn't possibly in fine detail explain how it functions argue with the people who do. Cause they like, know better. I'd say if one of the EpicCmTeam says the RAM shortage isn't the cause of the excessive battery drain, he's probably right, as he works directly with providing us with the build, on a level none of us understand or have skill in. Kinda like how certain people wanna argue that they know better than a google engineer. That clearing batterystats does in fact change your battery life despite very explicit explanation from said engineer dictating how that file holds nothing more than the statistics displayed to you about your battery under settings.

One question left, does Voicemail work with CM9? Not getting any voicemails even though I'm told some ppl left me some. Any way to get Visual Voicemail to work?
