Hi all.
I just received my a500 a few days ago.
I have Thor 14.2 on it now, and have been enjoying it. However I noticed the speakers have started making a ticking noise. Kind of like what you would expect from a hard drive, or something electrical turning on and off quickly.
At first, i thought maybe it's a hardware issue. Whats interesting though, is that the sound is only present when there is nothing else using the speakers. As soon as I turn on some music (even the very lowest volume) it no longer ticks. Pause the music, and the ticking is back.
This makes me think the problem is software, considering there shouldn't be any change between the tablet not playing any sound via speakers, and music via speakers, in so far as the circuitry used.
Should i try going back to a stock rom? Has anyone ever experience an issue like this?
Thanks!
Could it be gsm interference from your phone??? Sounds like typical gsm radio interference on your speakers.
I have the a500 not a501, so there is no radio in it to send GSM signals.
However i think what your saying is its interference from my cellphone, which is a captivate and does have a gsm radio.
Is there a way I can check if this is the case? Now that i think of it, my cell was in my pocket when I was noticing the problem. I guess i will try having it really close, see if theres a problem, and then really far away.
Thanks, i'll report back in a bit.
Is it possible that a speaker is blown? Or that the volume is up to loud? When my volume is turned up even to 75% it makes a crackling noise.

I have a noise problem, I don't think it's quite the same as previously posted noise problems.
I get a hissinh/static noise from the phones speaker (on the back) and from headphones. It is only happening while the phone plays sound (and some seconds later). Every time I up or down the sound with the volume keys, there are noise coming out of the speaker for some seconds. Please report if you have the same issue, especially eith headphones.
I could live with the speaker-noise, it's not that big a deal.. What's worse is it is in the headphones. I have a quite low impedance set of in-ear plugs from creative (I am able to hear the hard drive spinning up in my old mp3-player, but no constant noise) Crap. I want to use the phone for music listening. Question is: software or hardware related? Using JF 1.51 ADP for the record
I hope it is hardware related - I bought mine off ebay, allthoug brand new and everything, I don't know how I would go about getting it fixed/a new one with no receipt. Shipping it back and forth to England isn't really tempting either.
It's not just you, it's piss-poor rf isolation on the audio outputs. Listening with bluetooth doesn't solve the issue either as bluetooth has its own noise.
Yeah, I have yet to listen to a decent pair of BT headsets.
So this is a known problem, and it's definitely a HW issue? The fact that it's only there when sound is played, and is also there with a headset (where shielding around connectors is not and should not be a problem at ALL) made me hope this was softwar related. Argh, what to do then? The sound quality despite this seemed prety decent, although a headache today prevents me from really listening to music and say for sure. Shame.
*Pondering refund options.*
Any chance of isolating around the connector and fixing this, if it is "airborne" caused noise, or will the noice enter the equation before the connector (cabling, sound chip)?
I will try with a relatively high impedance headset (sennheiser 555) and see if it is better there. But can't take them on the bus anyway. But a couple of Ωs could always be added somewhere along the cable and might do some good. Have to have the sound at the lowest levels with the in-ears. Maybe a software fix to lower the volume output will help? Or won't it, if RF noise is the cause?
red: I will buy this item and hope it helps. And will look into lowering the volume output when using headphones as well. Should be possible (atleast it usually is with tweaks in WinMo.)
I have similar problem with HTC Magic: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633035

I got the second pair of in-ear headphones (MEElectronics M9) today. I ordered them hoping that the annoying background noise I get when listening to music on the HD2 will disappear. Although there is a small improvement over the Sennheiser CX300, the noise is still noticeable and makes listening to audio books or light music at low volume very annoying.
I tried disabling the phone functions and data connections (airplane mode) but it doesn't make any difference. Any ideas on what I can do to improve the sound quality on the device?
You HAVE upgraded the ROM since you bought the device, right?
If, by any chance, you didn't - that might be your solution. If you did, maybe you should consider going to the service and asking for the new one.
My sounded bad too. It freaked me out. But new ROM changed it. Now it sounds perfect. I also use Sennheiser, but there is no noise in the original ear-peaces too.
(Since there is no 1.66 CEE ROM, I am using 1.48.479.1)
So I've got my surround for 1 week, and I notice an issue when I am using my headphone. If my wifi is on and I connect my headphone to the device, I hear a
fire cracker sound if I'm not playing any music or videos. It is not obvious which you can only notice it while you are in a really quiet place. So my question is, is it the problem with the surround or the window phone 7. The thing is that if I played music under wifi is on, the fire cracker disappears. Or if I turned the wifi off, it disappears. Has anyone has this cracker sound issue with wifi on? It seems like the antenna has affects the audio jacks or something. But if that is so, why the sound disappear while I'm listen to music??
Normally, when you plug headphones into anything, some noise is produced, just the metal rubbing on metal or w/e, (I'm sure the electrical engineers can explain it to the electrons), but this is a noise I've heard on many devices throughout my electronic experience. I've never seen it as a problem. It seems normal on my Surround, and I tried with WiFi on, off, connected, unconnected, music on, music off, and any other combo I could think of. All of the noises were the same, none louder than the others.
I'm not sure if that is helpful to you, but mine did not change at all.
I understand that. It's just I have never experience a cracker sound like this noticeable. So when u compare the noise to other devices, is it the same?
It sounds like nothing out of the ordinary to me, but you may want some more opinions.
I have noticed that when using the supplied earphones I can hear static background noise when I scroll through menus and buttons while music is playing. This only happens when music is activated and I can hear a low annoying fuzzy static that gets louder the more I scroll for example.
I can barely hear it when I put on headphones but can with earphones, seems quite strange wonder if anyone else experiences the same thing?
No one? Just try it, turn the volume down while listening to music then go to home screen and scroll left constantly or right and the hissing noise will get louder.
Audio chip or whatever must be quite crappy.
Restarted phone and can't seem to hear it now. Strange.
I'm glad that by talking to your self you've managed to fix this problem.
I spoke to myself to soon! Its back and I suspect it has something to do with the wifi sharing. As I activated kies air, uploaded a song, listened to song and hissing is back! argh.

Try force stopping it? I've frozen most Samsung apps but even before then I had no problems at all with something like this tbh...although I don't use the stock music player.
I have annoying static background noise while using earphones, it can be better heard whilr using the phone when no music is playing.
This is a general issue or isolated cause?
I have this!!! I seem to get possibly some kind of audible distortion just before i play a song, and then when i pause the song and touch the screen it makes the weird static noise (and possibly when the song is playing as well, but its less identifiable). For me this noise only lasts for about 5 seconds after i have paused it and then stops. And yes, it also seems to be louder in earphones than headphones.
HAVE YOU FOUND A FIX? Firmware upgrades? Sent it back and got a replacement? what did you guys do? Let me know, thanks.
Could it be evp?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
I installed the Backslash Kernel and THEN noticed this, rebooted and it went.
It came back a while after. I also unplugged the headphones with the music app running and the phone rebooted.
Re-flashed the CF-Root KG1 Kernel and it went away, not had any 'noise' or reboots since :/
I got a replacement from orange as this issue was too distracting. My replacement has just come, but exactly the same 'static noise while and after listening to music' issue is still here!!! Is this really what its like for everyone but people don't bother saying?

KERNAL VERSION: [email protected] #2
On my last phone i tried flashing to generic KE7 AND KF3 (using odin). Both seemed to make the sound last for not as long after i pause the music, but did not solve the issue. Will rooting the phone, using different kernals and whatnot fix this? Could it be a dodgy batch of phones from orange? (I have no knowledge of what rooting and kernals actually is, let alone what ones i should use)
I have also experienced this. It seems the screen is the problem since the noise is gone when the screen is off.
What headphones are you using?
I have used the supplied headphones, but i have also tried other headphones as well. All seem to give the same sound but possibly at varying levels of volume. Do you still have the problem?
I use the Sennheiser CX300 II and I do not experience it any longer.
It depends on the impedance of the headphones. If the impedance is 16 ohm I cannot hear it but on 12 ohm headphones it is pretty obvious (but they are able to play louder).
I have not tried the supplied ones myself because they ALWAYS sound awful but if you had a specific name for a proper headphone you have tried, you can easily find their impedance on the internet.
Hmm well i have tried my creative EP-630 headphones which have impedance of 16 Ohm and i can still hear the noise. I have used many terrible headphones on terrible 'mp3 players' over the years and i have never experienced this, so i don't see why i should now go out and buy some new headphones. Although if you are really saying that the Sennheiser CX300 II headphones completely cured your problem then it might be worth it? Was your problem exactly the same as the one i described? Cheers.
It's obviously a problem of the audio amp picking up electrical noise from the other components of the device. I'm skeptic that anything can be done to solve it.
I also can hear some faint background noise on mine when scroling the screen and using memory, but anyway it's very faint... not enough to bother even in quiet environments.
I have to agree, it's bad shielding in the design. Something we will all have to live with.
I notice it most between songs when listening to music. Each songs starts with a little blast of noise.
Hmmm well i've heard that with certain kernals it is not there. Also for me, simply changing to different stock firmware reduced the time that the static sound lasts after i pause a song, so surely that can mean it can be stopped altogether. Im not prepared to give up on this (yet).
I would be grateful for other information and reports from other people about this issue, even simply if you don't have it. :/

i have this problem too...
but i have found that it does with some earphones... i guess its a matter of shielding, as posted before.
Ok..maybe I just got a bad unit. But here it is. Phone is one day old.
When I initiate a phone call with my wired headset, I immediately get hissing. Then if I move my head or the wire brushes my cheek.. it sounds like someone is making sexy time with a paper sack inside my head. This isn't an echo as it is real-time. All the noise is obviously being picked up by the mic and is pumped into my ears at an explosive level. I attempted to turn the volume down which only resulted in the call volume dropping rather than the demonic feedback. It kind of reminds me of the in-ear monitors that vocalists would use.
Here's what I've tried:
1) 6 different headsets, all different brands and cost including the freebies that came with the phone. The only set that didn't blow my eardrums out with noise were some cheap ass Maxwells from Wal-Mart, but the problem was still there
2) looked through all the settings I could find. The only thing that makes a difference is turning on TTY mode.. which causes too low a volume for me to carry a conversation without going into a noise cancelling chamber.
3) applied the latest OTA update. No change
What I'm willing to try:
1) rooting and flashing a new rom.. But only if this will actually fix my issue.
2) perform a sacrificial ritual involving an SII, an SIII, and an S4... None of which had this issue.
3) changing some call setting that is hidden somewhere between Narnia and Atlantis....
Thanks in advance
Quick update....
Tried the demo unit at retail store.. same thing.
Tried bluetooth headset.. no problem.
It seems like as soon as the Phone app opens a connection the mic is overamplified or SOMETHING. It is driving me nuts and I hate my BT headset.
Still wanting to know if anyone else is experiencing this.
Just a quick update.. This is still present even with BT headset. For a lack of better phrasing.. this seems like the mic is being back-fed into the ear pieces. And it only happens on the Phone app. It there a setting somewhere that I am missing that will solve this? It is super annoying to be able to hear yourself and surrounding noises than the person you are trying to talk to.
Thanks
Tried mucking around in mixer_gains.xml to no avail. Maybe some kind soul who is smarter than I am could provide some guidance? I don't know how to explain it any better.. It's as if everything going into the mic is being output simultaneously to the buds. It drives me nuts
I just tried to listen to what you were describing on my headsets/headphones but I couldn't replicate it. Crystal clear calls for me, and apart from it being the headsets I have no idea. Maybe both you and the store have faulty units.
