Finally got my keyboard, but have some questions.... - Eee Pad Transformer General

So, after having my TF for about 4-5 months, I decided to get the keyboard. Why not sooner? Well, I had a laptop and I wanted just a tablet - which I happen to love. However, I'm deploying (again) this week and I don't want to take a laptop and tablet.
I've researched some of this, but here's some of my questions....
1. Is there any way to swipe scroll with the pad? I use Google Currents and I noticed that left/right keys don't cycle through the stories. Instead of clicking and dragging I just swipe the screen. Any way to do that with the keyboard?
2. If I read the manual I can probaly figure this out, but what are the circles on some of the keys for? (1 and 6, up and down)
3. Not a question, but a statement, my palm always hits the track pad. Hit it twice since typing this.
4. Are there any cool tips and tricks with the keyboard? (aside from dropping a 750gb HDD in it)

1. two fingers on the trackpad left and right should change the page
2. they are just references to highlight reference keys
3. F4 (the 3 squares with the line through it toggles the track pad on and off
4. some guy made his chrome instead of brown

That's what I'm talking about. Thanks for the tips.
Anyone have anything else?
This thing is awesome, where have I been?! lol

One of my favorites is the back button is a right click. That and I was able to change the cursor from the circle to the pointer.

all thats mod-able too if your rooted
you can change functions with tasker and you can change the cursor to something less blue.
last tip is that when you are using the arrow rather than the circle multitouch gestures on the pad don't work although if you want i can throw together a package to make it look like the pointer and act like the circle

Hate to hijack it but I would be very interested in a file that gives you the arrow pointer but the multi touch of the circles
DESIRE HD using ER3BUS ASUS TRANSFORMER on KRAKD

Thanks for all the great advice!
To do the pointer mod, do I need to root?
I don't mind rooting, but I've everything set up exactly like I like it and you know what a pain it is to reinstall the apps, getting everything straight and logged in, etc.
You know what would be a cool mod... Automatically disable the touch pad after 10 keys (or something) are entered consecutively. Or the user can change the amount. Right now I turn off the pad manually before posting on here, but if it would recognize I'm typing something lengthy that'd be awesome. Is it possible?

haven't tested it yet but this should work just replaces the pointer_spot files with pointer_arrow files

and if it doesn't work flash this to get it back to normal

you do need root to do the pointer mod and having clockwork mod would be helpful just use nacho root it is not destructive to data so you dont have to resign in

1. push the silver slider and detach screen from dock.
2. notice jaws drop around you.
3. ????
4. profit

Im able to use the tablet for everything but highend gaming for portability and versatility it is fantastic.
Goodintentions has done a few hard mods to his docks, check it out for some ideas, I personally will be installing and additional set of batteries and a ssd, but am waiting because i will most likely be upgradingto the prime soon.
My only concern with having the tab without a pc is if it gets bricked, will you have access to a pc or mac where you are going...just in case.
Be safe on your deployment bro

General keyboard tip: search Google for Asus Transformer shortcuts! There are some pretty helpful keyboard shortcuts for many operations in different applications.

Good luck to you deploying, man. Half the guys I've installed the hard drive for are military guys who want to bring without hassle their movie collections with them.

General use questions

Hi,
I'm considering buying an Advantage when it comes out. I have some questions about the Ameo/Advantage that I'm hoping someone can answer.
1. Is the Ameo/Advantage ROM upgradable to WM6?
2. Does the screen wash out in direct sunlight?
3. Are the two WM5 menu buttons available without the keyboard?
4. What's the story with the cursor button on the top left corner of the unit? 5. Is it a true joystick? If so, where are the left and right mouseclick buttons located?
6. Will the keyboard also attach itself to the back of the unit when you don't want to use it for input, or do you have to set it aside?
7. Can you answer or return a call when the keyboard is covering the screen?
8. When you have an SD card inserted can you see both it and the HDD in explorer?
9. Is WM5 on this device still limited to a "seeing" a single directory level under My Documents for such things as opening documents from the Office apps? It would seem silly for it to be so when you have 8Gb of storage available.
Thanks in advance!

1. Is the Ameo/Advantage ROM upgradable to WM6?
Yes
2. Does the screen wash out in direct sunlight?
I don´t understand what you mean. There are strong reflections in the sun, but when you use a protection film ist much better.
3. Are the two WM5 menu buttons available without the keyboard?
Yes you cant tap on it with the pen
4. What's the story with the cursor button on the top left corner of the unit?
You can use it to navigate. If you push it you have the same function like tap on the screen with the pen.
5. Is it a true joystick? If so, where are the left and right mouseclick buttons located?
There are no left and right mouseclick buttons
6. Will the keyboard also attach itself to the back of the unit when you don't want to use it for input, or do you have to set it aside?
? I don´t understand this question
7. Can you answer or return a call when the keyboard is covering the screen?
No you can´t, but you can choose automatic answer.
8. When you have an SD card inserted can you see both it and the HDD in explorer?
Yes
9. Is WM5 on this device still limited to a "seeing" a single directory level under My Documents for such things as opening documents from the Office apps? It would seem silly for it to be so when you have 8Gb of storage available.
Yes it is still limited, but i guess WM6 is coming soon, so this problem will be solved
Thanks in advance!

You are welcome
like all the reviews on the web clearly show, the keyboard sticks over the screen not the back.
It comes with a leather pouch which when used holds the keyboard separately when it is not used.
as for the left and right click buttons.....?
it's a standard joystick. they never have left and right mouse click buttons. If you mean the soft keys, they can be tapped on the bottom of the screen as already stated.
bigsmart, thank you for answering what you could!
rhedgehog, the htc site also sort of shows the keyboard behind the back of the device (in the 360-degree view), though not attached. I understand the "normal" position for storage of it is over the screen. But I'm also wondering if you chose not to use the case, and also not to use the keyboard, whether it could be safely attached to the back while using the stylus on the screen. The design of HTC keyboards leave something to be desired, and I rarely use the one on my 8125 for that reason. But still, I like that this sort of keyboard is on the Advantage because at the least it would make for a good screen protector. I just don't want to have to keep track of it if I take it off the front and it won't stick to the back, because the case, while well designed adds bulk to something that is already comparatively large.
Where I was going with the joystick was an attempt to find out if it worked similar to the ones on the OQO 2, and the Flipstart (and other uPCs and UMPCs). Having the ability to position the cursor over an object, and then click on it to either execute it (left click), or bring up a context-sensitive menu for it (right click), would be more than a little handy. But barring that, if you can use it to position the cursor, and then press it to simulate a left click, I'd be happy with that.
The question of the buttons was to find out if you could have access to the Windows Mobile menuing system without the use of the keyboard or stylus (one-handed operation). My 8125 has two buttons below the screen for this, and each provides context-sensitive menus or functions. So with one hand, and no stylus I can for instance pull up the menu that allows me to turn on the speakerphone by pressing the right button during a call, then navigating to and selecting the appropriate menu item with the d-pad and OK button. I realize the Advantage/Ameo is not really designed for one-handed operation, but being able to use it without the keyboard or stylus for basic operations (such as a phone), would be a benefit.
Reviews and/or pictures rarely address all the questions we'd like the answers to...for instance, another important issue (to me at least) is the inability of Pocket Office apps to see more than a single directory level beneath My Documents (or to even do away with the My Documents model). It is somewhat less than useful to bundle apps that do not have the ability to see multi-level storage on a device with 8Gb of data storage built into it. I just finished watching a WM6 demo but unfortunately they did not touch on that aspect of the new OS.
Thanks for taking the time to reply.
I'll reply about the keyboard question if I may.
The keyboard doesn't 'stick' to the back of the unit - I guess there's no metal plate/magnet located there. However, if you're using the leather pouch in the back, the keyboard will just hang from the leather pouch (only attached using the power of magnetism). I normally just have it hanging down, but you can rotate it and hold it against the back of the device, in the wallet should you so choose. But I love the keyboard - far better than the softboard within WM5 itself and find myself using it more and more. The only problem I do have with it is the phone button is in the wrong place (top left) where I hold the keyboard whilst using it walking around. Hope that helps.
Digital.Diablo,
Thanks for the reply. I decided I did not want to wait for the X7501, and the limitation of the directory visibility in the pocket office apps has been a hindrance to me for just too long. So today I took the plunge and purchased a Sony UX280P. I'll carry that around, along with my phone, instead of an Advantage. But at least I'll have some additional options as a result.

[INFO] Tips and Tricks - Eee Pad

Loving your new tablet but want more? Try some of these tips to add new experiences:
-Official Asus mini FAQ pdf HERE.
-Official English language manual HERE.
-----------
-If you have rooted your device, then applying the FOTA update (firmware over the air) from Asus will re-lock your device, as it enables signature checking. If you wish to keep root, either wait for a safe update to be released by a member of the forums, or don't update at all. If you have already updated from the original stock firmware you will have to wait for an updated root method.
*Root allows low level system access to all features of a device. Benefits include, but aren't restricted to, allowing everything to be backed up, blocking adverts, greater customisation, etc.*
-----------
-What apps are compatible?
Try HERE for a list.
-Getting lag from google search?
Set your home page instead of 'www.google.com' to 'www.google.com/webhp?complete=0'. This will remove the instant feature and give you lag free search results.
-Enable Quick Controls in web browser.
Open Browser>Settings>Labs>Quick Controls. Now go back to the browser window and swipe your fingers in from the side of the screen, for a cool options menu.
-Want a longer charging cable?
Certain USB 3.0 male to female extension cables may have the extra pins required to allow you to lengthen your cable. Failing this you could always use a mains lead to extend the electrical lead. Links HERE and HERE for more info. Full thread on cables working and not working HERE.
-Got a problem you can't seem to fix? Tablet locked up or become unresponsive? Speakers not working?
Try holding the power button down for 10-12 seconds, which will totally power off the device. This is different from other power down methods. It's fixed many people's various problems so it's worth a try if you are stuck.
-Install a different keyboard.
There are many keyboards available for tablet devices on the market. Settings>Language & Input>Keyboard Settings>Current Input Method. And if you hadnt noticed, the default Asus keyboard lets you swipe your finger to spell out words, just like Swype.
-Improve your wifi connection speed to the tablet.
Hold your pad vertically while facing the direction of your router or access point. You can get up to a 50% stronger signal just by doing this, as the aeriel is in the top of the device behind the screen. Also make sure your router is on a specific channel and not set to 'auto'. Use a free app such as 'Wifi Analyzer' to help you find the best channel.
-To store more files, expand your memory.
SDXC cards can be read by the keyboard dock. Format your new card to NTFS if you are planning on using files over 4gb. There is no need for partitions. If you are not planning on putting any files over 4gb on it, Fat32 filesystem is also an option.
-How can I get the best quality wallpaper as my background, and still have the scrolling effect?
For non rooted and rooted devices. Check THIS thread for an updated view of the wallpaper situation. Also a good app to help you create a wallpaper with the scrollable effect and still keep the quality is called 'Wallpaper Wizardrii' which is free from the market.
-What is the best resolution to make the wallpaper so I get that cool scrolling effect with the best quality onscreen when changing home screens?
For rooted devices. 2135 x 1408 pixels. The picture posted at the bottom of this post shows you the layout (credits to the Xoom forum people for this image). This is for adding wallpapers to the original directory once you are rooted. This way they are exactly the same resolution as the original 'asus tree' wallpaper. For reference, the middle area of the home screen is 1280x720 in size.
-Can I stop programs running when I start my device up?
You need to root your device and then you can install an app called Autostarts or Startup Manager which will allow you to disable apps that start up automatically.
-Change to an animated wallpaper.
Press and hold your finger on the home screen. Select Wallpaper>Live Wallpaper.
-How do I capture screenshots?
Settings>Screen>Screenshot Now go to the screen you want to take a picture of and hold down the task switching button for 1 second. Release and 1 second later it will take a screenshot. These are saved to sdcard/Screenshots/ in the file manager.
-How do I get into the bootloader?
Hold the volume down button and press the power button. Keep holding volume down until the screen lights up.
-Can I change the boot animation? (the animated 'Asus' logo at startup)
Details HERE.
-Add an internet bookmark list to your home page.
Press and hold finger on home screen. Widgets>Bookmarks
-Show the web browsing history.
Long press the back key in the default browser to show the last few websites you visited.
-Can I change the way web pages display in the default browser?
You can set the browser to tablet, desktop or mobile mode. This will tell the web server you are accessing, how your device should process a page and display it accordingly. It's recommended to set the option to desktop or tablet to make the most of the transformers large screen. To save on data costs when tethered, set it to mobile mode. Open the default browser. Open the browser settings>advanced>user agent string. Change it to whichever option you want. Close browser. Re-open. Should display the pages based on the option you chose.
-Add a finger pattern unlock screen.
Go to Settings>Location and Security>Configure Lock Screen>Pattern>Draw a pattern (and remember it)
-Use Battery Monitor Widget?
Set the battery to 6600mA instead of the default 1200mA. In battery monitor widget>settings>monitoring preferences>battery capacity (Check the underside of your box for the phrase '2CELL3300' to confirm, as there may be different versions for different countries). Setting it to this rating should give a more accurate reading for your battery stat tracking. (Thx to Edge929)
-You can plug other devices into the cable using a female usb to female usb connector.
Certain devices (such as usb memory sticks, keyboards, etc.) can be used via this method. Thread HERE with more info.
-How do I check battery usage?
Settings>About Tablet>Battery use>Click the graph OR Settings>Applications>Battery Use>Click the graph. Shows the system devices that have been using the battery.
-Email someone a lot? Add them to your home screen.
Press and hold home screen>Contact>Their Name. Adds a widget to the screen of your choice that lets you select a method of contacting them.
-What do the colours on the dock indicate?
Solid Green light = Battery above 95% charge.
Solid Orange (they call it orange, it's red on mine) = 10-95% charge.
Orange blinking = Battery less than 3-10% charge.
Orange fast blinking = Battery less than 3% charge.
-Hidden debug settings option in the default browser:
For advanced users. Changing these settings may dramatically affect performance. Type in about:debug into the default browser bar, then hit the options>settings>debug tab.
-Hidden easter egg in 3.1:
There's a honeycomb easter egg in 3.1. Tap the version number "3.1" in the settings>about tablet a few times.

No problem. If anyone has any more, please let me know and i'll add to the list.
I was gonna open a thread on it but saw this one.
Another tips is that since we are going to see updates more often, please don't update it as soon as you see "new update" available. Wait for it, give it sometime. As we've already seen a thread where user bricked their transformer because of an update...
If its working, don't fix it.
Someone has to risk it. If no one will update we'll never know if it's safe to do.

Right... as of 28th April the first post is updated with as much stuff as I could find from the entire Transformer section of the forums. I'm sure I've missed a fair few things that could be added, so please send me any useful tips that you think others might like to use, or that may help improve their devices. Thanks.

[Q] Anyone else loving Quick Controls?

Honeycomb 3.1 brought us a lot of minor tweaks and fixes, but I'm finding the new Quick Controls in the stock browser really addictive! Holding the tablet in landscape view, it's just soooo easy to slide in my right (or left) thumb and navigate backward, forward, to favorites, or refresh the page. Almost effortless - as if I needed to expend even less energy in the recliner browsing the web
Regardless of the little annoyances (like that infamous keyboard lag in some form boxes), I'm sticking with the stock browser for that feature alone.

Quick controls rock. I love that feature.
The only thing I miss is there doesn't seem to be a way to close/kill a tab if you enable quick controls.
Anyone know how to do this ?
i dont really like it because everytime i go to scroll i always end up poping that thing up instead from the side, u also cant use the slide bar with it which sucks. but each there own its just my own opinion

Doh! I hadn't realised that those keys were + for new tab and x to close tab.
I assumed they were for zoom or something.
Good call
Yeah, I've been using the quick controls, they're great except the tab switching could be better.
I like quick controls when using the device in tablet mode, but it makes it impossible to use the browser when docked using the track pad and keyboard.

It's not impossible. Just click and hold within a few pixels of the screen edge (either side) then use another finger on the touchpad to navigate around the quick control arc.
Would be cool if the browser would swap back to normal when docked

Agreed. 3.0 implementation was much better. Tab management stinks in 3.1 because it's an extra step to switch to a tab and then close it. It also isn't easy to differentiate between tabs as you move your finger up and down the little windows.

[Poll] Does anyone really use the trackball for anything?

was just wondering, i rarely catch myself using it, atleast.
Taking pictures, going through screens. But it's most practical use for me is usually selecting small links in web pages when I'm too lazy to zoom in.
I use it every day for:
-Recovery
-Answering / ending calls
-Selecting text / moving cursor / other text functions
There are plenty of other things I use it for, but less frequently.
That goofy little track pad is one of the features I miss most on my Tbolt. Instead, I get HTC's standard arrows to do the same job, and it sucks and doesn't work in Clockwork. I used it for editing text mostly. I wish you could adjust it's sensitivity like on a BlackBerry. I came from a BlackBerry so it felt very natural and useful. For many tasks, it simply the fastest, easiest way to get the job done. I gave up the case I was using on it for a while so I could use it more effectively.
I use it for Recovery
I'm constantly using it for stuff like navigating recovery and clicking on links in the browser. I got big hands and constantly click wrong links even when zoomed in, so the track pad is a life saver.
That is what's keeping me from getting another phone! Ha ha
I use it for recovery, track advance for music, cursor, taking pictures, you name it.. Very useful to me.
I used it for text fields and recovery. There was also one game that had a trackpad control scheme.
Moving around in text is all i use it for.

With the right kernel, you can:

As for the OJ, you can adjust settings at /sys/devices/platform/curcial_oj
There's lots of settings but the easiest way is to increase normal_th and sensitivity will go down
just:
echo 4 > /sys/devices/platform/curcial_oj/normal_th
and replace 4 with whatever value you want. Higher value = less sensitive. You'll have to put it in a script in /etc/init.d if you want to set it on boot.

I had no idea you could do it this way. Saves more trouble than waiting for the screen to turn on and then end the call.
I mostly use it for moving the cursor, it's a huge help because a lot of times it just doesn't go exactly where I want it to go when I press the touch screen- so I move it over 1 or 2 characters via trackball. I use this pretty frequently too.
Mostly for Recovery navigation and selection, but for cursor movement, too. And before the proximity sensor worked right, for the answer/end call thing, too. But now it seems to always know when to turn the screen on or off, even in the dark... That's with MIUI.us.

Same here. I LOVE the trackball and use it all the time for moving the cursor and copy/paste. I am reluctant to get a new phone without one.
I use it a good bit - flipping through screens, moving cursor - but gained some new tips in this thread!
I use it ALL the time to move the cursor because I make typos all the time in portrait mode. I guess my fingers are too big for the screen keyboard.
When I switch to my iPhone, I am constantly looking for the trackpad when I make a typo. Trackpad is much better than iPhone's crappy magnifier.
I use it to move the cursor to edit something I mis-swyped. That's about it.

Nexus 7 keyboard cursor keys

Hi All,
I've recently received my Nexus 7, and I'm very impressed with it. I do however have a nagging problem.
When typing a URL it's common to make a mistake, and when I do it's a complete pain to go back and edit. There doesn't seem to be any cursor keys on the standard keyboard. I know you can move a little cursor arrow about, but I have big sausage fingers, so this is painfully tricky.
I have also installed Swype, which I can switch to quickly from the standard keyboard, and it does have cursor keys. Unfortunately it also seems to fight with the standard dictionary and there is no quick single button way of swapping back to standard without going into settings.
So does anyone know how to get cursor keys on the standard keyboard?
I understand your pain, but there is no way to "get" arrows on the stock keyboard.
I'm sure someone could modify the stock keyboard, but what I usually do is tap on the URL.
This usually summons a BIG blue peg, which is a nice way of moving the cursor.
If not you can also try "SwiftKey 3 Keyboard" it has arrows, and is known for its self learning dictionary.

(Sorry can't link because I don't have 10 posts yet, but you can copy and past :laugh
If you do use Swiftkey download the phone version if you want arrow keys. When you install it will suggest that you use the tablet version - ignore it as for some reason you can't have the arrow keys in the tablet version. The option for arrow keys can be found under the Theme section of the settings.
Also,Ultra keyboard has arrow keys.

Actually you can have keyboard arrows in the tablet version of swiftkey 3, but unfortunately they are hidden. To get them you need to select "123" and then "{& =". Yeah, I know, slap forehead time!
nexus 7 table pc
My Nexus 7 is almost always in my hand, surfing the web, researching articles, reading an ebook, or otherwise consuming content from the web. It is particularly useful for those purposes as I have detailed in the past. I am getting asked if the Nexus 7 would be useful for creating content with an external keyboard. My answer is absolutely not.
I have a reputation for using tablets in my work by using them with keyboards to write thousands of words. They are very good at that as my working history proves, but only to a point.
The Nexus 7 will never be good for writing as I do, even with a good external keyboard. That's due to one factor: size. While the 7-inch display makes the Nexus 7 perfect for a portable companion, it is too limiting for use as a laptop replacement.

Hi:
I use Hacker's keyboard and wouldn't be without its cursor keys.

There is no doubt that this keyboard is cool. However, I would like to recommend one more choice. The more choices, the better for us. It's an Aluminum Case with Wireless Bluetooth Keyboard for Google Nexus 7 which serves as a best partner for my Nexus 7 in many ways.It is sold at $39.99 only. Hope my recommendation helps.
