Android Market Error Message - "Your Device Is Not Compatible" - Atrix 4G General

I've been struggling with this issue today, and just found the "solution" so I wanted to post it here in case anyone else has this problem.
Cause:
No Apps in the Market were updating, including stock Google Apps (including Google Maps!)
Every App - Including Ones that were installed on my phone would get a "your device is not compatible" error message.
Solution:
Change the Density size back to stock 240. Clear the data of the Android Market, and then everything should be running again.
Final Comments:
This was driving me nuts because I've had my density size at 260 since day one with my Atrix, and now this has become an issue "when it was never an issue before". Anywhoo... I updated all my apps, and then changed my Density back to 260 because I hate small icons/fonts.
Like I said this is a new issue that's never happened to me before, and possibly other Atrix owners may have the same issue, so hopefully this writeup may help somebody else out...

I think I remember encountering this issue before and got frustrated and just started everything over. Ill keep this in mind for future reference though, thanks!

NP... Believe me I've tried EVERY solution that I could think of over the past 2 weeks on and off. When I finally figured it out and got things working, I dropped everything that I had going on and wrote that up.
Knowing that it helped at least one person made it all worth while...

A similar issue happened to me. A month ago i bought SimCity Deluxe, then i change my Rom and the Android Market said to me that this game was not compatible with my phone. The problem is that now it is not compatible with every Rom I flash, stock also.

density should be @240 not 260

having this issue with Block Breaker 3. just wondering if anyone knows how to alter build.prop for Atrix 4G to work around this annoying issue.
EDIT: solved.
edit build.prop (I used Rom Toolbox Pro), change the following (and ONLY the following):
ro.product.model=Nexus S
ro.product.brand=Samsung
however. once I got my game(s) working, I realized WHY my device isn't compatible: the display size (resolution) is too big. d'oh!

While 240 is a standard density, the Atrix screen is actually 275ppi. The moar you know.

thank you for the solution, i run into this exact issue time to time when i switch to a different ROM. I had this recently on the new Neutrino ROM with Instagram, but if i logged into google play through the web on pc, i could install Instagram with no issues. Only on the phone in the google play store it would tell me my device isn't compatible but it would still install if i did it through the google play website.

This is actually an issue that HP Touchpad users have been trying to figure out. Basically, the Android Market only likes specific DPIs to make things easier on app developers. So if its not 120, 160, 240 or 320 things break. IMO its stupid since good coding practices should allow an app to cleanly scale, but Google apparently feels otherwise.
It is possible to patch the market to work on other densities, but I've had no luck finding a patched version of the most current market.

I had hoped this was my problem, but alas didn't work. This worked for Navigon update, but for google maps it says my device isn't compatible, which of course it is. It actually doesn't even see that I've got Maps installed anymore.

I had that issue happen to me when I updated to 3.5.15. What I ended having to do was first uninstall all market updates. Then I replace vending.apk in the system/app directory with an older version and set the permissions to rwer--r-- (normally it would be rw-r--r--, but it wouldn't work for me). After that reboot the phone. Then go back to the vending.apk you placed in the system/app directory and change the permissions back to the way they were before you changed them. Next you should be able to launch the market and it should update to the play store after a few minutes. All my google apps were recognized again.

Fix
1. Go into Settings, Apps, All
2. Find Google Play - Clear Data
3. Find Google Services Framework - Clear Data
Should be OK now
If not, Install Market Enabler, redo above - then fake USA market once and should be OK.

New Android Market Website

So it's finally out. What do you guys think? Is this the end of Appbrain? I loved appbrain cause I can browse the apps on the website and then just click install from there and it will automatically install on the phone. Now this can do it too!
The biggest upside to this? You can install (after you pay) "in-app" purchase app from the website. e.g. you can install the NBA League Pass from the website directly. Any other features I missed?
This is from Google themselves, not me.
https://market.android.com/
Cool. I like it.
I never really got into appbrain, because it still involved that extra step of opening the application itself.. and blah.. I think, I can't even remember. It just seemed tedious at the time to go onto the computer when it was quicker on my phone.
Then when Google does it, I'm all over it. I have been installing random applications just to install them. Why is this so awesome?!
I played with it for a while now and everything seems to be working well. I guess I can save some space by uninstalling appbrain and use this instead.
sweet jesus!
I'm like'n it...good stuff!
The automatic OTA install is working to my N1 and my Galaxy Tab now, it wasn't earlier this morning.
Works well!
With this new website comes another big change that will happen in the 3rd quarter of this year: NO MORE "LITE" version apps.

That's actually a good thing. You download the "free" application, and then if you decide to unlock it you buy the key from within the app rather than a separate unlocker application, or having the market cluttered with 2 separate versions.
Sounds like a plan!
The in-app purchasing as a general concept I'm not a massive fan off as it has the potential to lead to nickle & diming, primarily for games, but if used responsibly it should be good.
Wow, about time. Glad to see it's finally here.
now all they need to do is let you backup your app data. I dont want to lose my angry birds scores everytime i switch roms and forget to back it up with titamium backup
Well, I don't suppose there's a way for Market Enabler to work on the website?
It lists paid apps from all over the world, but it knows your phone's carrier and will prevent installs if your country does not support it..
I guess it's back to Market Enabler on the phone.
Anyone else having trouble actually buying apps from the website? Installing free apps works like a charm, but trying to purchase and install paid apps doesn't work. I press continue and _nothing_ happens.
running CM7 nightlies and the OTA installs are not working...
According to the website, you need to be logged into GTalk, only my GTalk won't log in. GTalk also appears to be missing from the market, so the problem may be on their end...

Doesn't work for me, it's been years and Android Market still doesn't support Google Apps accounts for Checkout. Although I can login, no devices are listed under "my devices" on market.android.com
I'm running CM7 Nightlies as well, I'm a few behind though, and I'm always logged into GTalk and the OTA's are not working for me either.
It's not working here on MM v.20. I've tried installing several apps but nothing happens on the phone end, the GTalk solution they give also doesn't help. Weird thing is they all show up on my app list as completed when none of them have actually installed.

I'm having the same issue. I'm running CM6.1 kangorama's version and the install says it has worked on the website, but nothing changes on the phone itself.
I'm wondering if it has to do with it being a rooted device without a stock rom?

I'm betting that someone is going to have to create a Web App Store Enabler or something along those lines for this to work on rooted phones or phones without stock ROM's.

I fixed for me installing through webbrowser: hxxps://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.earth&feature=search_result
But why i can not use market-application to install. Thats bad...
I'm having the exact same problem - no idea why.
Try this,
Go to manage applications, click on market and clear data, Now install the apps again.
Might work.
I tried to extract the Google Earth apk from the stock ROM and installed it. It installed, however it keeps force closing when i launch it. So i guess it's incompatible with CyanogenMod 7.1
Installs and works just fine on cm 7.1.0.1, but I also have matrix 8.5 kernel on top of cm

Furthermore Google Earth has a lot of downloads, then it would say if there was a kind of bug we would be informed one or two days later and not one week.

THX for this solution!
I found the solution to my issue regarding this as well. Apparently, if you change the device density, it will say device not compatible. I like running mine at 200 instead of default 240. So when I changed it back to 240, I was able to install/update all the apps.
Heeeeelllpp!!!
I convinced my girl to root her phone so i could "make it pretty" for her and well, part of my theming included changing the density down to 200. I used blade buddy to do it at first and it worked fine, except for the "device is not compatible" play store message. So i changed the density back to 240 again with blade buddy and it still gives me the incompatible message, even after wiping data from play store and rebooting with the default density! So i tried market enabler and that worked ONE time, now no matter what i do its not updating most of her apps and market enabler does nothing to help. Any suggestions, other than the obvious nandroid?

[Q] New Market and FC

Hello!
New Market on motorola Xoom Wi-fi every time I want to upgrade giving me FC. I don't know how to fix it. Tried to delete upgrade install on the Application but it is upgrading by itself. Tried to clear the cash, clear data.
Nothing helps.
Please, who know how to fix this problem? Looks like new Market doesn't work on Honeycomb.
Guys, help me, please? I really need your advice?
Thank you!
What market version do you have?
Sent from my Xoom using xda premium
If you have Documents to Go installed, remove it. It has a problem with the manifest and Dataviz needs to update it, you can use the version from their website in the interim.
Or grab today's free Amazon Apps, Quick Office and Quick Office HD.
Tried everything. Market. 3.1.6, market 3.3.1.1 or something like that, all of them giving me fc.
Guys, please, I need a solution. Can somebody give some advice, please? Or maybe somebody have old mafket app flashable trough cwm? Because google doing nothing for honeycomb.
Sent from my Xoom using xda premium
The problem is almost certainly related to an installed app, if you don't have Documents to Go installed, started removing apps one at a time until the market begins working properly and report back when you identify the offending app.
I had a thread for the same thing a page or so back.
documents to go didnt seem to cause me much grief (but i removed it anyway), but i did have a problem with Enhanced Email FCing the market (which i also ended up removing on the xoom, working fine on the desire).
noticed my market updated itself to 3.3.1.1 (or similar) the other night too - same problems as the last version.
just waiting for ICS update now and will see if that fixes stuff - I imagine it will and/or devs will update their apps to ICS
Do you have apps that you side loaded that the market reported as not compatible? I get the market FC any time one of my side loaded apps tries to update.
I found that it was a certain alternative market that caused me to "loose" all of my apps... I thought that it was the new market and even went back to the moray 2.2.1 to have the old market.
I figured out it was that other market because I uninstalled it and bingo, I had my apps...
I was pretty stupid and used titanium backup to "force" the market links and ended up with one heck of a messed up android market.... Now I am working through that..
Uninstalled the app called "Download all files" and sims like everything working for now.
Thank you very much!

actually i think i had getjar on there... that's missing from the supermarché now - I wonder if that was the issue
i was also guessing that by the time ICS hits the xoom - and all the devs update their apps for that most of this issue should go away
FWIW, I had the exact same problem I uninstalled Enhanced Email and the problem went away. Too bad, I really like Enhanced Email!

Google Locked Me Out of the Market!

Today, around 5:00pm CST, I found that I could no longer update or find many of my installed apps. This has happened several times in the past, usually after installing a new custom ROM. I am currently on Simple Streak 1.2 with PerfUpdate.
I tried all of the "tricks" I know to get it to work. Cleared the cache and data in the Market app. I use v2.3.6 of the Market, so I installed the latest v3.4.4. All installed apps showed up but nearly all of the PAID apps said "not compatible". I also changed the fingerprint in build.prop. NOTHING WORKED!
I called Google Market Help tonight and after 20 minutes of clearing data and cache in Market app, Un-mounting and re-mounting sd card, and explaining to the tech that I have never been able to send apps from the Market to my Streak when logged into the Market on my PC, the tech put me on hold for 2-3 minutes. When he returned, he asked if my device was rooted and if it had a non-stock ROM. I answered yes to both. He then told me that Google has locked me out of my PAID apps because I have violated the Market policy by rooting and modifying the ROM in my device. He went on to say that "ROM developers put malicious code in their ROMs" and for that reason I was locked out of my PAID apps. He told me that I would be able to access my paid apps if I re-install the stock ROM and do not re-root the device.
I pointed out that there are numerous apps sold in the Market that are specifically for rooted devices or for rooting devices. He said this is true as Google does not limit the content of the apps. Only the access to the Market following purchase of those apps. I told him if I wanted a locked down device that I would have purchased an iPhone.
I have not changed my ROM since the day Simple Streak v1.2 was released. He said they finally caught up with me today. I guess I am a Rooted Android Criminal!!!
Since speaking with him, I have discovered many of my purchased apps are "no longer compatible or not found" as are a few of the free apps, primarily any free app dealing with rooting the device such as Root Explorer, Lookout Security, and Handcent SMS. Paid apps include Kaiten Mail, 3g Watchdog Pro, Visual Voicemail Plus.
I tried restoring a Nandroid backup from yesterday before the problem started but it didn't help.
I'm wondering if I just install the DSC Gingerbread Rom instead of the "Original Stock ROM", would the Market work? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I also asked if installing apps from Amazon would cause this problem. He said "it shouldn't." He didn't say "NO." Could this be Google tightening up things to increase Market sales and shut out Amazon? Just speculating.
I am also curious if anyone else is having this difficulty. Either with a Streak 5 or any other Android device. Seems Big Bother is Watching!!!

Looks like new piracy wave is coming soon with such policy changes.

I don't dispute that. The problem seems to be that they ARE doing that. I wonder what % of Android devices are rooted and what % have a custom ROM?
If I can't use the Market, I will have to get the updates and new apps somewhere else. The developers are the ones that will take the financial hit for this policy. That's too bad. The weird part is that I am locked out of my PAID apps, not very many of the free ones. That doesn't make any sense. I'm being punished for supporting the developers?!!!
kraz
If I remember correctly LA for devs states that Google can freely remove/limit access for published apps.
--
Have you only one Android device to check whether device or full account is locked?
--
Anyway, i'd feel absolutely clean using pirated, but previously paid for apps.
But just to get more paranoid - more and more people use Google services. For business too. Time to rethink "let's move it to cloud" strategy and move data you really need access everytime and everywhere to own file/mail solutions?
According to the tech, my device is locked out until I re-install the "Original Stock ROM from the Manufacturer". He said I would then get full access again and I will be able to update the ROM to "any newer Stock ROMs released by the original manufacturer."
Personally, I'm not convinced it isn't because of the few Amazon apps I have installed.
kraz
@_n0p_
Would changing the fingerprint in build prop to something new, open the Market? If so, would you PM me the fingerprint line from the DSC ROM? Thank you!
kraz
It would be a major pain, but you could make a nandroid backup of your current setup, then install a stock rom (preferably 407, since you wouldn't need to change baseband), set it up minimally (basically just go through the initial setup with your google account), and make a nandroid of it. Verify that market works in the stock rom, then switch via nandroid restore. My guess would be that Google is only randomly spot checking and you could go possibly months before being "kicked" again. When that happens, make another nandroid backup (to be current), then restore the stock nandroid backup, check the market, and restore back. The downside is about 20 minutes of your time each time you get kicked. I searched the internet for similar cases to yours and thankfully couldn't find much. Almost all results were related to renting movies and had nothing to do with apps.
I'm running DSC and here is the fingerprint:
ro.build.fingerprint=google/sojua/crespo:2.3.6/GRK39C/178324:user/release-keys
I was trying to figure out why would google care what rom we have installed, rooted or not. I guess they don't like that we can remove advertising on the free software. diane
Thanks to _n0p_ and lordmorphous for the DSC fingerprint.
Unfortunately, it didn't work. However, more of my paid apps are accessible today. I have no idea why that would change. The remaining apps that I have already paid for will have to get updated through a black market site. I have already paid for them so I don't feel guilty about updating that way. Also, I have contacted several of the devs and they are willing to send me the updates directly as I have helped them beta test in the past.
Thanks to all for your suggestions and help!

On topic, what Google are doing is shocking. I have not rooted since adb does all I want to do, but I think that locking people out of their paid apps is a horrible move.

Yes, for the past 14 months! But that has nothing to do with this problem. As I said in my OP, Google Market Help tech said in a phone conversation that I have been locked out of my paid apps because my device is rooted and has a custom ROM. The Market worked perfectly until 5pm yesterday. Nothing on my device changed to create this problem. The tech said Google wants to tighten things up as they are convinced that rooted and custom ROM'd devices are the source of the viruses in the Market. He said, "Developers of custom ROMs intentionally put malicious code in their ROMs."
This problem isn't the same problem we had when we were first using DJ Steve's ROMs in 2010. That was due to fingerprint and screen density issues.

clear both,
go back to market and give it a few seconds to a minute to populate your apps and try to update.

If that worked, do you have a non-standard dpi?
If you did then it's (likely) simply a combination of:
1) Service rep spouting FUD
2) The way the market works now
The pro version (seems) to only include a link to a modified version of the market with dpi checking dummied out.
My preferred dpi is 200. HOWEVER, I changed my dpi with Blade Buddy to standard 160 and it still didn't work. Using LCD Density Modder with 160 made ALL my installed apps visible AND, more importantly, compatible to upgrade to my Streak. My Streak remains at 200dpi when I leave the Market and return to Home Screen and other apps.
Trust me, this is no placebo! It really works. Some of my apps have been unable to upgrade to the next release since I first used DJ Steves StreakDroid 1.46 custom Froyo 12/2010!!!
As for service rep spouting FUD....I prefer to call it spouting BS!

Switching DPIs doesnt make it instantly detected by the market app, if you just do nothing and wait it can take days to be detected.
Clearing the market cache makes it faster, but even that isnt always instant.

Alright, I've been having weird market issues and blah blah blah for the past few days, here's the rundown:
First, I bought that rootzbox app by rootzwiki cause I've never bought a root explorer and used crappy file explorers as workarounds - to my discovery after buying that app, they have what they call an "lcd density wizard" within the app that helps with market and w/e.
But I know exactly what it does, and you don't need any special apps to do it, soooo...If you're changing your lcd density and having issues with apps not showing and etc., what you need to do is:
1. set it back to standard density (240) then reboot.
2. Use titanium backup to clear the play market cache, then open the market and it should prompt you w/ the play market message, press continue then accept and let it sit for awhile. You should be able to see all the apps like you normally do any other time, like games and etc.
3. After that, now you can change your lcd density to w/e you desire, it should be fine now compatibility-wise w/ finding apps and etc.
If that's not the problem, then you need the newest google market that was just recently released that supposedly fixes reports of this issue. I think the version number is 3.5.16 or something like that. I saw info about it on rootzwiki, but as I'm typing this, I took the time to find it and just found it in our themes and apps forum for our device: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1581390
That should do it.
I just used that as another push factor to get off miui and finally try ics. your build, actually. thanks for the long post, hit your button as well
