My experience rooting my B80 & .21 with GUIDE - Eee Pad Transformer General

I picked this baby up as a gift for myself for being such a deserving guy for Christmas.
After reading up on the forums about the difficulties, and ASUS's hate for the modding community and their constant attempts to lock people out with the new iterations of the EEE Pad, I was in a slum. Especially after seeing I have a B80 AND updating the thing the day I received it to x.21 without knowing the implications that held for me.
So after doing some research, here's where I am now. Rooted, and running a custom ROM! And here's 'my' version of events which led to this great success. I wasn't able to use Nvflash through APX mode, due to write errors.
1. Head over to pjfriend's thread here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1417006
Download the .19 update http://www.multiupload.com/X65RBVD2MB , extract the .zip to reveal another .zip, and place that new .zip in the root of the MicroSD card mounted inside your TF101.
2. Reboot your TF101, once it's up and running again, you'll see a triangular icon in the notification bar in the bottom right, click it to reveal an offer to update to .19.
3. After a reboot, you should be back to .19.
4. Head over to rayman84's thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1345049
Download Razorclaw v1.0.1 http://androidroot.mobi/download/Razorclaw_1.0.1.apk and run it. You should now have successfully rooted.
5. Time for CWM, get yourself 'Superuser' from the Market, once installed make sure you update binaries. Open Superuser application, and hit the wrench in the top right corner, and have it update binaries, under the General tab.
6. Reboot.
7. Download a ROM, I grabbed Revoler 3.11 by Gnufabio http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1173230 I'd recommend it as its worked for me no problem. Pick up the regular version, NOT the Nvflash one. Place it in the root of your MicroSD card.
8. Install both Gnufabio's RecoveryInstaller http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19319421
When running for the first time, it should prompt for Root Access, Confirm YES.
9. Install 'Transformer reboot to Recovery' from the Market. Once recovery is installed, reboot to recovery using the app. Scroll to install from zip, and select the .zip file of the ROM you downloaded earlier.
9. You're done! Rooted and running a custom ROM, go tell Ma' and make her proud.
THIS HAS WORKED FOR ME, IT MAY OR MAY NOT WORK FOR YOU. Who knows, might just have been the way the wind was blowing where I am. SO TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK.

great write up,

Yeah it is. The problem is that it isn't considered an upgrade for the TF101G as it is already at 8.6.6.23

[Q]Won't update to Android 3.2.1 over FOTA / need original stock ROM

So first of all my tablet is brand new and not rooted and I don't want to root it.
When I got it I could update it instantly from 3.0.whateverwastheversionatthetime to android 3.2 (build 7.006.01_COM_GEN1) but it won't go from there to 3.2.1 which I hear is available for my location (France) The update tool tells me that my firmware is up to date.
I've tried a factory reset as advised by Acer customer care services but it wouldn't change. Also no matter what I do (empty cache etc.) the market won't update to Google Play Store and I think the two issues are related.
So I have two (or rather 3) questions:
1) Does anyone know a way around to force the update? (I doubt it's possible but hey "l'espoir fait vivre")
2) If not can I install a stock ROM without root and NOT compromise the warranty?
3) Where can I get such a ROM? I have searched here and here but 3.2.1 is not on the first thread and the links on the second thread are broken, plus I want to make sure that the ROM is the proper one for my region and that comes the ICS OTA update I will have no troubles doing the update.
Thanks in advance to those who will answer.

1) No you cannot force an OTA
2) It depends - others have reported returning there acer with no probs -, i think someone has even returned it rooted and been ok. These things are fairly bulletproof, and really hard to 'brick'. As long as you can read, follow a few steps you shouldnt have any probs. The worse thing you can do is try 2 or 3 different methods all at once because something isnt working right. You're best to pick one and stick with it, if you have probs ask for help in the thread you got the rom from or start your own like you have here
3) The update.zip method from the first link you posted "should" work. Did you "decrypt" the file you downloaded before extracting the update.zip??
You could try timmyDeans v4 method- it will install a stock 3.2.1, it is rooted but you can remove root using the tools he provides. Beware though this will wipe all data so backup anything essential.
The update.zip method will leave your data and settings intact
As always the choice is yours, there are some really excellent custom roms out there - I enjoy the best of both worlds with a backup of my trusty stock 3.2.1, I flash to my hearts content knowing I can always go back to it when the OTA update is out!!! Oh the joys of root priveleges
Thanks for your input, I'll make sure to try all this when I get back from work. I've a few additional questions:
1) If I install a custom rom, will the OTA work from this ROM or, comes the OTA, will I have to restore my actual Stock rom and then proceed with the OTA?
2) I haven't tried the rom on the first link I gave because it is modified and I was searching for the original, pristine, untouched stock ROM for 3.2.1
I've seen such roms around here on xda for 3.2 but none for 3.2.1, if anyone stumbles upon one please let me know.
3) Since I'm still looking for a pristine ROM before trying anything else, I have a friend whose tablet (same brand and model) safely updated to 3.2.1, is there a way to make a rom from is gear? If yes, how to?
4) (related to 3) how can I backup my actual ROM, do I have to be a root user to do so?
THX again!

1. Typically, most people do not take OTA's when running a custom rom, as basically the OTA installs a totally fresh factory Rom. This is true with the 3.2.1 update, which contains a new bootloader. Usually, this means you lose root, and Recovery, then stuck with downgrading to get these things back.
Timmy Deans root tool supposedly maintains a back door method, which s supposed to protect root, in case of an OTA. No, I haven't used this method, as I run my own 501 roms.
2. Vache has a thread "full package and updates" in the 500 Dev forum. There are several factory Roms and Updates. You'll have to look. Chances are, he may not have the specific Com Gen version you want, but probably one close enough.
3. If your friend can get adb running, you can pull a "system dump", which will dump all files/folders in the system folder. The boot.img would be nice to get, but you can probably use the current one you have. Unfortunately, he already rebooted, so you probably can't get the original full update file. If he's rooted, you can use an app called Rom Factory, to get most of what you need. It's always a good time to become familiar with ADB.
4. Well, you can back it up internally, but it's sort of useless if you can't get into your OS You will need to Root, and install a custom recovery to keep your backup externally.

ok, as Moscow has pointed out, in vaches thread not all roms are listed. My stock roms (1.016.01 and 1.139.04) for instance weren't - so I spent the last hour or two trying the "EUU gen1" listed at the bottom of the page. Well, it actually worked!! It gave me an OTA to 1.139.04 straight away. After that installed i got the 4.010.40 to 3.2 and then the next 2 for 3.2.1 - 7.006.03 and 7.014.15. So its given me the correct updates for my country AND kept my data and settings too.
SO, since you're on a Gen1 Rom this should work for you too, but still no gaurantee you will get the OTA to 3.2.1, no harm in trying though
btw timmydeans method is a gen2 rom so you can rule that out...
---------- Post added at 11:25 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:16 PM ----------
just came across this link for an update to stock 3.2.1 build 7.014.14 here - orignal thread here but you need cwm to install it....
unless you can make it into an update.zip???
but thats way outta my league,
moscow may be able to suggest something though
Thank you very much, your answers help a lot! Just a few precisions and I'll stop being a pain in the ass!

==> @ Moscow, when you say "lose recovery" does it mean I lose the green thingy with gears when I start with volume down and power pressed/ and when I reset to factory settings?
==> @dibb_nz your method is the closest to what I'm looking for, I also hope it will give me the correct updates for my country and since Vache is a fellow countryman it might just be ok.
Anyways thanks again, I'll give a thorough look to all of your solutions and try and do a few things tomorrow afternoon. I'll keep you posted in case this thread interests anyone else.

No, what I meant to say, is when you run a rooted "custom" Rom, and use a "custom" recovery such as RA Recovery or CWM, getting an OTA update, usually wipes that out, and installs the factory bootloader. Your factory recovery....cough cough.... will still be there.
If you are only concerned about stock factory, then don't worry about it. You;re ok. Your factory/stock recovery will be just fine
The reason we root and install custom recoveries, is so we can do 3 primary things.
1. Flash a custom rom
2. Create a complete system backup to our external SD card.
3. Get rid of pre-installed useless apps.
There are other things we can do with it, but these are the primary reasons.
When you have a default factory stock system, the only protection you have, is a factory reset (hope it works), and a couple other methods which require a touch more knowledge.
Anyhow, don't worry about your factory recovery. It's just fine.
1) Just for the sake of knowledge what's the difference between GEN_1 and GEN_2? (and GEN3 and CUS7 and EMEA_TMLP)?
2) @Dibb_nz when you tried with the stock rom from Vache, was it because you encountered the same no FOTA update problem as I did? Or just to try...?
3) Something's still unclear to me after browsing through the forums: If I get an unmodified stock ROM can I flash it with the stock recovery? (so without rooting) Or do I need CWM (so root is needed)
4) What's EUU? (on Vache's thread some roms are listed as EUU)

1. The Gen's usually signify regional based roms. More specifically language support, sometimes a wifi tweak, and maybe a couple other things. Mostly though, ComGen1's are for the US and probably canada, and offer about 12 different languages. TMPL is for East Europe mostly, with polish as the default language. All roms contain the english language as far as I know.
3. You basically can't install a full rom on an unrooted tablet without CWM or RA Recovery. You will have to run the update (decrypt the file, remove the update.zip)
4. EUU is a pc based install. Plug in the USB, set your tab to APX mode and run the EUU.
If you did the root, and install a custom recovery, then you could run just about all the full roms. Your custom recovery would be overwritten, and you would lose root access. You would have a stock tablet with the version rom you selected.
You can always wait a week or so. Am sure if the update has been pushed to your country, it's just a matter of time till you get it. It's common for the update process for specific roms, to get fully done in 2-3 weeks. It took well over a week just for users in california to mostly start getting updates.
Well the official release date for the ICS FOTA in France is May 3rd, so I'll wait until then but having other options and the know-how to take actions is always a good basis. (plus I'm really not the patient type ^^)
Stupid question but I'm guessing EUU needs root too?
and also APX means rebooting while holding power and volume - right?

I tried the EUU just to see if it would keep me on my regions OTA upgrade path.
Sometimes you can have probs OTA'ing if you aren't using the rom from your region.
But in this case it gave me the correct OTA's.
APX is Acer Download mode, where the OTA upgrades are flashed - this EUU will do it via your PC. Button push method (power/reset button) not required.
No, the EUU does not need root which is why I tried it out for you
You will need to be on 3.2.1 before you will receive the ICS update
I used this EUU from vaches thread -
EUUs_SBK_Acer_A500_1.016.05_COM_GEN1
late for work will check back later
That's really helpful thanks I'm downloading the same EUU you used and will try it today or tomorrow depending on how much time I have, will keep you posted!
Ok so I did the EUU install and it worked fine, the tablet then allowed me to upgrade to 3.01 and then 3.1 then 3.2 via FOTA without any problem. But once I reached 3.2, the update tool informs me that there's no update available and my gear is up to date
So my guess is Acer France are not pushing the 3.2.1 FOTA update anymore...
Any other explanation?

Glad to hear u got thru the EUU process OK, not so great u still can't ota to 3.2.1
Others have reported similar issues not sure if/how they were ever resolved. As moscow posted earlier, ota,s are not made available to all users in all regions, all at once, so it may be just a matter of waiting for the next "push cycle" to roll round.
At least you know you can always get back to stock if you ever decide to root and go custom There no direct root method for 3.2, just use that same euu to get back to 3.1 and use iconia root and Acer recovery installer from the market and you're ready to flash your rom of choice
Pls post back if u do get the ota - best of luck
rgds Donna
Yeah I was just browsing the XDA forums, contemplating the idea to rollback and root and then installing this
I wonder if it's worth waiting for the OTA... as for what you said about waiting for the next "push cycle" I've been waiting since I got the tablet and the update hasn't come yet, which is strange because the ICS update is due on May 3rd in France and I'd guess they'd have everyone up to date and ready for the update by now!
Rooting seems pretty straightforward and much easier than what it was on my Samsung Galaxy Spica: I found this
, a file called iconiaroot.apk on the sdcard aswell, rebooting your tablet while pushing the volume down button so its starts flashing the buggy honeycomb version.
Then start up the tablet again, rush to the market, download some file manager, with that filemanager explore your sdcard, and install the iconiaroot.apk file, once thats done, rush back to the market and download and install acer recovery installer. At that point you will have CWM (clockworkmod) installed.

is that all there is to it?
In any case I'll keep you posted just so it can help anyone with the same issue!
alsoe FYI and just for the anecdote: the reason I'm so cautious about everything and scared ****less of rooting is that the tablet is a present from my girlfriend for my 30th birthday, and she'll hang me with my guts if I brick it.
Ok I rooted and flashed the above-mentioned rom and it works! I'm now under 3.2.1!
Thanks to everyone who helped me! When the ICS update comes I will post here to signal how the FOTA went.
Thanks again!
Lol, good onya for taking the plunge! Yeh acer recovery installer is brilliant, along with iconia root, makes the whole process stress free.
Will be interesting to see if you get a notification for ICS OTA with that rom.
Can always flash one of the leaks if u get impatient??
Glad everything's worked out and yr g/f still talking 2 u
rgds Donna
thx! I will post here when/if I get the OTA. and my love life is safe thanksnto iconia root
okay so the ota has been rolling for over a week and a half now and still nothing for me

It's old and works only on 9.2.1.17 or .13 as far as I remember so even viperMod is better but worth try.
yes you are right my firmwire was 9.2.1.17 thanks for clarification
Help rooting. I tried everything...
Hi, i have read lots of threads and forums i have investigated and tested. I tried initially with "tf101 ics root.zip" i did the syncing and running of "run.bat" followed every step, and nothing. Made variations of the same process and nothing.
Then i tried with RazorClaw and a advice with "device lacks need file" appear.
Then i tried SparkyRoot and it read "Exploitable file not found".
I dont now what to do anymore, i just want to "Freeze" all the bloatware and crappy uninstallable apps that auto load on my Transformer.
i Got the Asus Transformer TF-101 with ICS 4.0.3.
I uploaded a screen print with firmware versions installed in bit.ly/MILGVv
Please help!
Thanks in advance

Not working for me NOOB!, I know!
Please help, is not running properly for me.
I do download ans unzip OneclickrecoveryV0.4.2
I reseted my TF101 to factory defaults
Enabled USB debug mode
Installed Asus sync on my Windows 10 laptop (also from ASUS). It detects my device.
I run on my computer with admin privileges "EasyRecoveryV0.42.bat"
When "manually" installing the adb drivers It says that the actual are newer and doesn't do that part
The device is listed as a long list of numbers
When the zergs are rushing (just kidding), it says:
"failed on '/data/local/tmp' - not a directory"
and then the message:
"adb server is out of date. killing...
* daemon strated successful * "
is shown many times, and a few more errors.
The device does not restart or do anything by it's own. I don't see blue bars or anything.
Ok, then I uninstalled asus sync, and everything looks nice until first reestart.
The 1st restart is ok, but after requiring the second one, prompting you to see a blue bar... the restart happen but the blue bar does not.
It looks like it¡s not making anything
oneclick recovery console says:
"
If you do, you might have a *very* shiny paperweight.
Continue? Y/n
starting, this will take awhile...
/dev/block/mmcblk0p4: cannot open for write: permission denied
"
From this on, I can't fix anything and the device is running like always
Any suggestion?

Careful with root on 4.0.3 kingroot works 100% so then flash CMW and flash katkiss ROM will update your version to 4.4.4 and install superSU then factory reset to remove kinguser etc then use ES file explorer to remove any kingroot files put on the system then kingroot will be removed and you'll have standard SuperSU

When you boot to CWM Recovery, you have a menu item "Wipes"
In Wipes;
1. Data/Factory Reset (don't worry, it skips your photos and such)
2. Cache
3. Dalvik Cache
Wait, you're not finished.
Go back to the previous menu, and select "Mounts and Storage".
1. Format System
2. Format Flexrom
Now, go back to the previous menu, and select Install Zip from SD (or similar)

You are going to lose all data. I make nandroid backups with data toggled everytime that I do anything to my tablet. Do you?
After following the above instructions,
Just simply flash a stock 3.2 image. It's really too simple. Flash it in recovery. This even works while using the patched bootloader by skryllax_cz. There are a selection of roms midway down this post and at the bottom. Any of them should work for this.
When the 3.2 finishes it's flash and you reboot. The tablet will show "Flashing Bootloader" under the custom skryllax_cz text.
It will reboot on it's own.
That's it. You should be able to OTA.
I recommend going to the Play store and downloading/install the Acer Update Enhancement utility after the tablet settles down.
However, my tablet downloaded a small update right away without it.
Here is an additional option as suggested by dibb_nz in the 11th post below. drop down and say thanks if it helped!

I have included post 20 from below. It is a guide for getting recovery back should something go wrong. What it will do is install CWM as well as the V8 bootloader. After that you can start all over or flash whatever you want.
I prefer to use Blackthund3rs APX Flash Tool. To get the apx tool google this. blackthund3r apx tool
Basically what you will do is get the tool, open it, choose bundle market, choose 17, use default bct, enter APX download mode, and flash the V8 bootloader with CWM.
The steps are... (Copied from here.)

Thank you for all that you do here. You're really saving alot of peoples arses lately.
Kinda curious. Did this method work for the A501 folks?
not working for me
followed the instructions as posted, still waiting on the OTA update to ICS
i can't even boot into CWM now, i get a android robot with a yellow exclamation mark.
how can i fix it? plz help
thanks
The Stock rom that you put on is just that... Stock. So you lost CWM when you flashed it.
What you can do now is...
a: Wait for a little bit, check for updates again.
b: This one kind of blows the whole point of doing the downgrade in the first place. But... Use this and get Root. Install Acer Recovery Installer from the Play Store and install a custom recovery.
c: This one at your own risk. Mainly because I have not tested this way and I have no idea if the bootloader will flash properly or not. Go here and get the update for a 3.2 (Acer_A500_7.006.01_COM_GEN2) stock rom, then see if you can update the rest of the way to ICS. Be sure to put it in the root of your SD card and name it properly to update.zip. Then reboot as if you are going into CWM. If you want to wait until tomorrow I am downloading the roms tonight and I will test it. Should be finished by noon Central U.S. time (-06:00gmt)
d: Go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1205204&highlight=cwm+honeycomb+3+1 and look around. See if any of the options there suit you better.
Good luck.
And if you have any more trouble say the word.
EDIT. I am having a pretty busy day. I'll have to try this a little later this afternoon. Sorry if you are waiting.

Thanks for this easy pass. I used this yesterday and the OTA'd my way to ICS and then used Blackthun3ers tools to root and install the V8 bootloader. All in all it was pretty painless.
Glad that it worked for you. I've updated the first post. Sorry for putting you through the extra step of installing 3.1. It seems to work even better when I just flash a nice stock 3.2.
New links posted for going directly to 3.2 Honeycomb Stock with factory bootloader in the OP.
And again. This is safe to do when running any bootloader. If you want full stock. This works well.
And thanks a million dibb_nz. So glad you're here to help out.
So this method works also for ICS bootloader?

Seems to work with any boot loader. Just wipe first or be prepared to have problems.
It is easy to fix, but a bit of a pain.
Just a thought, the update zips can be flashed in 2 ways.
If u use the stock recovery then rename the file to "update.zip" and remember to remove it from yr sdcard after you're done. This is really important!! You'll end up in strife if u don't!!
With a custom recovery then use install zip option.
With the 3.1 zip u can retrieve yr cpuid (if u need to) then update to the unlocked ICS bootloader directly. This isn't possible with the 3.2 zip
Cannot confirm whether we can repair borked partitions with this, has anyone tried it??? Would save alot of probs some have had with drivers and apx mode...

Thanks for adding the good info.
I agree with your assesment of 3.2 HC. It's really only good to me as a waypoint on the path to full stock ICS.
I don't know if the 3.2 rom repairs the partitions or not. I would not be terribly suprised if it did fix those.
You can flash the unlocked ICS bootloader to the 3.2. But, the only good ( And this is pretty good) thing that doing this does is...
On the reboot from the pass screen hold your volume rocker. Depending on the one that you press, you'll either get the boot options. Or you'll boot to CWM. It is great to fix the bootloop issue if you are as goofy as I was and forgot to wipe first.
This was how I tried to do it a few weeks ago, through the stock recovery, and I got stuck in a bootloop
BUT, I did the thing where you hold down Vol Up+ Power then flick the switch back and forth and that got me booted into stock HC
Wow this is awesome! Cannot believe how easy this was. Worked flawlessly. I flashed the stock 3.2 rom, booted up and DL the acer app right away then checked for updates. After a few websites, I was on stock ICS. Thanks!
Thanks for posting your results guys. Glad that it worked for you.
Thumbs up to every post in this thread
I used all of my daily thanks on this thread, it was more than helpful to me. The information in this thread is clear and precise as well as very easy to follow. Because of this thread I am now on stock Android 4.0.3 finally.
Let me give a little back story. I bought my Iconia A500 in August of 2011 and loved it. Within the first night I had it I had Clockwork Mod Recovery on it with a custom 3.2 ROM on it. I had my A500 for about 2 months and then life through me a curve and I lost my job week made my finances really tight so I had to pawn my beloved A500. I know I know how could I dare do that, but like I said my finances got bad tight. I managed to get another job about two months after I pawned it but I could not ever seem to get enough cash saved to get it out of pawn but I did manage to pay the renewal fee on it every month until this last Monday when I finally got it out of pawn.
Now I had been reading thread after thread to learn how to go back to stock so I could do the OTA update. I found this thread earlier today and now I after a flash of the file I downloaded from the four share link in the OP and three separate OTA updates my tablet is on ICS. A big thanks to everyone that posted in this thread. In my opinion it should be made a stickie.

How to install custom rom/recovery for Acer a500?

Hi guys welcome to the weird and wonderful world of the acer tab!!!!
Things are very different with this device, whats 'normal' for other android devices is not 'normal' for our tab!!!!
So first of all, dont try installing cwm or a rom the 'normal-this-is-the-way-I-did--it-on-myphone', you will end up with a brick!!!
2nd, you both have working systems at present, so we'll try to keep it that way.
Open up a file explorer and navigate to this:
/sys/firmware/fuse/acer_cpuid
One of the first things that are different is this: acer_cpuid
It should look something like this:
288424344009597 - now u need to add a 'zero' to the front:
0288424344009597 - this is your cpuid, back it up in multiple places if need be, just dont ever lose it - IF anything 'goes wrong' at any time you will NEED this number to save your tab from eternal brickdom!!
3rd once you do get your 'cpuid' go to the 'sbk generator' here.
This generates your 'sbk' or secure boot key and will give you something like this:
0x93588800 0x33CE8901 0x0BED6D03 0x30737899.....
OK then, now you have your cpuid/sbk you can start thinkning about what rom you want to install on your tab.......
Read the OP(Original Post) of your desired rom. This will tell you EVERYTHING you need in order to flash it - remembering always that 'Acer' does not do things the 'normal' way!!!!!!
Most of the custom ICS/JB roms on here all require the 'patched / unlocked bootloader'... In fact, even installing a custom recovery, cwm, twrp or public recovery, for the first time....will require the BL to be 'patched' first....and yes, even flashing this is not done the 'normal' way....tho the process can be complicated there are PLENTY of guides and auto tools to make it easier for you....
The 'patched bootloader flash' will also include a 'custom recovery' too, and you can choose from 3-4 options....amazing but i'd advise to use cwm 1.7.3, until u get up and running, after that you can go crazy flashing anything you like!!
So basically there are 5 main steps to getting a custom rom installed.
1. Install the Acer Drivers and the android_sdk drivers
2. Get your cpuid and generate your 'sbk'
3. Your desired rom is on your external sd card
4. Put your tab in 'apx mode' which allows u access to download mode
5. Install the patched v8 bootloader/recovery - either manually using nvFlash or using the auto tools.
Personally I prefer the manual nvFlash method, if you get an error it will at least give you an error message...the auto tools will just get 'stuck'
Check the 'bootloader' thread OP for a guide to manual nvFlash and the patched bootloader package here
There is also a step-by-step in my sig!!!
If you want to use the auto tools then apxFlash tool, or afterOTA tool you can find both in the 'bootloader' thread. And a step by step for apxflash tool also in my sig....or this excellent one here by user jdgM3NT4L here...
please be sure to read these posts very carefully and if there is something you do not understand then please dont hesitate to ask , there are plenty on here who will help you thru the process....AND its easier to offer help at this point rather than trying to do so when you've bricked it.....
As far as roms are concerned, you cant go past 'civato's FLEX roms' very stable and no issues i'm on cm10 and havent had a problem with it.....Of course it depends on what you require but I'd start with one of the flex ones.
Most peeps here have no trouble with this process, those that do, usually try things the 'normal' way, then find out they need their cpuid/sbk to get out of trouble and of course they dont have it....this makes things most difficult.... there are a few tabs with motherboard issues that have needed to be sent to acer....other than that, he only other issue you may have are driver related, check out the cpuid thread for anything driver related and lots of other background info too....theres also a zip file there that has a mini-sdk kit, to save u downloading the full android-sdk....
i think thats all i can think of at the moment, sorry for the long post and all the caps and bold text - just trying to save you alot of unnecessary grief...
Good luck with it all and remember....in this forum things are not 'normal':laugh:
Wow, a lot of stuff to do just to flash a from huh. Lol
Sent from my A500 using xda app-developers app
Lol, as always preparation determines the success of the final outcome....and yeah with the tab 95% of yr time and energy is spent preparing!!! The actual flashing process takes only a few minutes...
Of course u could revert to hc 3.1 where everything is 'normal' i.e. one click root, flash cwm, flash rom, done....
Gosh, even hc 3.2 was locked down and unrootable....
So in the grand scheme for us to even be able to have stable ICS roms, let alone cm10 on the a50x.is.purely down to those wonderfully clever devs we have here..who were never gonna let a.locked bl, get in their way..
OK its complex I'll admit, but stock ICS is c**p and the lives of our tabs extended past wot Acer ever thought....and guys like gersma and.blackthund3r have built auto tools to make things easier
Anyways, its.well worth the
effort and is actually alot simpler to do than it is to describe how to do it...think of.trying to explain how to ride a bike and writing all those steps out....much easier to help them thru it by just getting them on the darn thing and doing it....dontcha think??

Oh, one other thing, you'll wanna back up all yr personal stuff, music, photo's and wot not especially going from one build to another, and most of the custom ROMs require a complete wipe and format of yr data partition too before install, just so u know!!

wow dibb, thank you so much for a helpful response!! Really enlightened me about how far off I was about the update process (compared to updating phones) and yet close enough to what I had to go thru for the Viewsonic GTab.
I'm currently on stock 4.0.3 rooted for A500. I have obtained my cpuid and SBK. When I go to recovery mode, I see a droid with triangle and exclamation mark. I tried flashing twrp but I still saw the same droid. I now know that I need to flash a different bootloader with recovery included.
My question is that if I flash the new bootloader which will allow me to put a custom recovery, during that process will my current ROM be removed or wiped out? If so, what do you recommend for backing up the app in the current stock ROM? Titanium Backup? BTW, I don't have an external SD card; all I'm using is the internal 8GB
Thank you for your help!!
def need external SD , it will help out alot

Yes u need the v8 bootloader to get a recovery installed...
Always check the original post of the rom you install for special instructions regarding bootloaders.....this applies to all custom Roms even stock pre rooted ones.
Yup TB to back up yr apps and data - dont restore immediately...make sure everything is stable first.
If u dont have an ext. SD card, the EUU method doesn't require one, and as slayinu said, it would make it easier if u had one especially for the update.zip methid
Im sorry...
I have the a500 running ota 4.0.3....well from the official app. I have it rooted and running superuser yet I downloaded the Acer recovery installer app from the market and get the recovery verified failed message when booting into any custom recovery and the dead android with the exclamation mark....I know I need a patched or an unlocked boot loader but I cannot find one I downloaded the afterota but it doesn't do anything on my computer...idk what to do the frustration is gonna make me break this thing and just go buy a newer tab running jb ....help please!

Seems weird afterota "doesn't do anything"...did you install the drivers?? Did it give u yr cpuid/sbk you cannot do anything without this AND if u muck things up its the only thing that will get u unbricked? Are u using a micro USB cable? Do u have USB debug enabled?
If u go to the root guide in my sig you'll find d.load links and all the guides to help u install the v8....take special note of the boot.p file u need to rename or delete in /system....
For more info on getting yr cpuid/sbk see the cpuid guide in my SIG or the sticky in dev forum...

obviously..
I'm too dumb to figure this out...idk how to get my cpuid none of the ways in your "where's my cpuid"guide worked.I don't want to stay stuck on ota 4.0.3 but apparently I have to..thanks for your time and your advice, unfortunately I wasn't able to use it properly.
Well, it seems it's not just you being dumb ...
I tried the same - original OTA 4.0.3 and rooted my A500. Now tried to use the 'AfterOTA'-Tools, but getting stuck in step 3 of 4 (maybe i just need to insert a SD-Card in the Tab?).
Just got no idea, what to do now - the only thing i know is: before flashing, i need a open bootloader, but i've got no idea how to do that. The Guide linked in this posts: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622425 is just confusing me more and more
After a reading a few times, it seems to me, that MY next step should be:
"Automated flashing tool" (STEP 5= Going into APX mode see Q&A or use A500 manager)
-1-Reboot your tablet and make sure on your tablet: "Settings" -> "Applications" -> "Development" -> "USB debugging" switch on.
[...]
-It will ask if you are ready (click yes if you are)

Is it correct, that THIS will help me to patch/open the bootloader?
Or do i just have to follow this as a next step to create a patched bootloader:

Hi voodoo, no, neither of you are being dumb!!! It CAN be a complicated procedure, we try to make our guides 'simple' but theres ALOT that can go wrong
Yes the last link you posted will flash the patched bootloader!!!
- but basically this is what SHOULD happen
Note: The only way to get a custom ICS rom on your tab is with the v8 bootloader by skrilx_cz. This must be flashed via nvFlash/apx mode.
Note:The only way to install a custom recovery like cwm or twrp etc is with v8 bootloader.
Note: You cannot use Acer Recovery Installer unless you have the v8 installed.
Note: Rom Manager does not support our Acer Tabs...please don't use it to flash 'anything'!!
OK heres an overall view of the process:
1. Install Acer and adb/fastboot drivers
2. Retrieve your CPUID...
3. ...and use it to generate your SBK
4. Download your ICS or JB rom and copy to your sd card (internal or external)
5. Enter apx mode to begin the flash!!! or use apxFlash tool
5. Use balckthund3rs apxFlash tool and follow the instructions: hint: dump and save your bct!!!
5. If using civato's manual nvFlash method - Put your tab in apx mode and run the .bat file
5. AfterOTA Tool is only for those tabs which have OTA'ed to ICS!!!
The main issues you will have with the actual flashing process itself is a partitioning error or a bct error - and both of these are easily fixed...UNLESS your tab in one of the few with a hardware fault which only a new motherboard can remedy
Once you get the big white "PASS" on your tab, boot straight to your new custom recovery, do the FULL WIPES and flash your new rom....DONE!!!
Well ... i now used AfterOTA - but not in a virtual machine - now just natively installed on my macbook via bootcamp (windows). Worked. I now have a V8-Bootloader (the tab shows me this when iam booting it up).
Whats the next step to flash a new ROM? Iam ready to do that? Or is there any other step needed by now?
Regards, Tom
Edit:
I now just tried flashing a custom rom - so i copied the *.zip to my USB-Stick (FAT32) - because i read, i can use an USB-Stick as an micro-sd card.
Tried booting into recovery-kernel - worked for me, but the only thing i can see: a lying android with an red sign ("!").
Did i something wrong?
Oh dear....if u had a stock rom on there then its overwritten
your newly flashed recovery....you need to delete or rename
the "boot.p file" in /system..then reflash the v8...
The very next step should be to enter recovery and flash your
desired rom....
So, it now just works everything.
Used Acer Recovery-Manager to re-flash the recovery - worked fine for me.
But: i tried several 4.1 and 4.2-ROMS ... is it correct, that there's no Google Marketplace anymore on 4.1 and 4.2?

Yea just installed ok. Haven't gotten into it to if there were much changes yet. Probably nothing immediately noticeable except it reoptimizes the apps on first start up. If looking for log here's the site but doesn't yet look like it was posted and probably won't be for couple days but when does can check here.
http://support.asus.com/download.as...300T&p=28&s=1&os=32&hashedid=8BmzkQ4yoz5WzBrW
The other things to check is to see if motochopper and other root methods work and if any one loses root we'll have to see if any one with root by motochopper method loses it which tell you truth probably not too much danger in that as it's only a minor update. I'm still waiting to root myself but would like to see what happens? If some one tries to root after the update if any thing changed.
System update failure
I received a notification of an update which I downloaded and told the system to apply. It shut down the system and began the update and then failed with a dead android with a red explanation point and the message update failed.
I rebooted my tablet and got a message that the original configuration was restored.
If anyone has had success in applying the update (US version) please let me know where I can get a valid copy to try. The links to the Asus site seem to point to the old 4.2.1 version.
Thanks.
Who can lay out an update?

Sorry to hear that but it'll be on asus website it just takes them a couple days to a week or so to post it. Were you rooted by perhapse the motochopper method. There's cases if there are frozen apps and etc and if everythings not back in place as in normal use it would fail. Not sure it always applies but have heard of this. Also not sure if you want to try a factory reset and see if you get a prompt for the update again again works in some cases but not always and if that doesn't work the last thing you can do is if your not unlocked and can still get otas is to downgrade back to 4.1.1 and just go through update process again after it reboot the downgrade.
I wonder if the update addresses some of the issues we have been experiencing, random reboots, bluetooth permissions issue. There are a couple others that were brought up on the CROMI ROM thread.
On a stock firmware no random reboots, it only on CROMI
Updated (europe). All good. I had to do a 'restore root' and reboot twice with Voodoo OTA, to successfully restore root.
I am on the 4.1 style launcher and I noticed the clock font (bottom-right) has changed in this update. Looks bold and condensed now. Obviously this hints to more than just stability changes. Anyone on the 4.2 style launcher? I am curious to see if it has been improved in this update.
ASUS TF300T Firmware Update v10.6.1.15.3
I'm running it now, checked online for release notes before installing but found nothing but this thread so screw it, I just installed.
I'm not rooted as I don't want to void my warranty just yet and I'm cool with the stock rom.
I did switch to stock 4.2 launcher before installing the update to see if any changes there as Evan_ was curious.
Don't like 4.2 launcher myself because of the location of the buttons swap to middle and the ASUS Custom settings bar is odd to me.
Anyways, its running and I'll check back in if I find any changes.
Successful System Update
JOP40D.US_epad-10.6.1.15.3-20130416
Noticed Time & Date in status bar drop-down. (Don't recall that shown)
Switching back to 4.1 Launcher. (Prefer it as configuration is better, I hate the back button in the middle on 4.2.)
Noticed a Font change for the clock and all the stock ASUS widgets.
Once again tbdawg has been kind enough to provide the new firmware download for those who didn't receive it.
Please see post #234 0f this thread and give him a thanks!

Thanks for the link. What is the process to manually install this update? I have only done the OTA updates. I am rooted, but otherwise stock.

I have placed the update file on a MicroSD card and the tablet just wants to unzip it It shows the zip file then the following:
FOLDER META-INF
FOLDER patch
FOLDER system
blob
At the bottom of the screen there are options to
Cancel Text encoding Extract
I am not sure how to proceed.
Thanks

Since I am not unlocked, what is the process to downgrade to 4.1.1? Every attempt to upgrade from the MicroSD have failed, and, yes, I have tried multiple MicroSD cards from 4 GB to 32 GB and had failures in each instance.
Thanks.

Really no need for sdcard. As long as you downloaded the 10.4.2.20 firmware from asus website in my case I didn't have to rename it. Just download and unzipped once and placed on root internal memory. You can just initiate the update by either inserting or removing the sdcard if it on root of internal. Just to be safe after unzipping once make sure it's name {US_epad-user-10.4.2.20.zip} or depending on firmware version put WW or CN and etc. In place of US. Should pick it right up.
Just to be clear are you trying to upgrade or downgrade?

I was attempting to get the new OTA upgrade that failed on my tablet. Found out something interesting about this upgrade approach. If I put in an upgrade of the same level like 10.6.x.x and was already at 10.6.x.x the system ignored it. But if I put in 10.4.x.x the system identified it and offered to do a downgrade, but would have erased everything and I wasn't ready to do that, but I may have to do so.

I have tried the SD card upgrade method with no luck but found that if I put in a lower level like 10.4.x.x the system saw it as a downgrade and would downgrade the system but would erase all my data, which I was not ready to do, but at least I have a path to should I so select.
