How to Change Video Recording Resolution after ICS update - Nexus S General

I have updated to ICS (4.0.3) and now I can't change the video recording resolution. Before you could change the resolution from High Quality
(480p) down to low for mms with a max recording time of 30 seconds. This seems to be missing unless I am looking in the wrong place.
On the plus side I now have an option to make peoples faces look funny with Big noses or distort their faces lol
Has anyone else found they can't do this?

Havn't noticed this before (as i have no use of lower quality video), but does seem to be missing from the stock rom. But yes, definitely have the face effects

Xperia Video capture (samples ?)

Hi.
I'm very surprised that there are no sample videos recorded with Xperia available (30fps VGA video recordings). Exceptions are old video captures made with older firmware. Those are not great quality (compared to e.g. INNOV8).
Do somebody know where to find some video samples made with retail model of Xperia (or could someone made one in full quality so I can consider this capability ) ?
Thanx.
Note: The X1i (Euro version) of the phone is the only one that supports 30FPS VGA video. The USA version (X1a) supports 24fps QVGA recording, similar to past ericsson phones.
Also the X1i uses h.264 where as the X1a does not. Video recording quality on the international version will be about double the quality you will see on a US-Spec model.
Point being, if you are in the USA looking to get this phone you're not going to see the same quality from samples released now since the phone just started shipping the UK,Germany,Sweden etc.
Thanks for info.
I'm from EU. I've seen a few samples in VGA/30 fps from Xperia, but also these were not on par with INNOV8 (on the other side, I must admit INNOV8 has "shocking" quality of video recording). INNOV8 is not in the market yet (or it was released at the same time as Xperia) and there are a lot of video samples from users on the web (incl. you tube).
I would be satisfied if recording quality of X1 is moderately better than the sample I've seen a long time ago.

Just a thought.
The video capture on the youtube videos seems ok but the quality of the sound doesn't seem much better than an am radio.
Maybe I won't ditch my n95 just yet...

Hmmm, not bad at all. I had this horrible feeling it was going to suck as every HTC phone I have seen made it look like HTC were allergic to decent cameras. I had hoped that SE would insist on something better than your average HTC phone though.
forget movies @640x480, thats thumb cinema.
if you have a lot of light, the framerate will increase, but at fast movements, the picture will go very blocky (distorted and unshape). its absolutly not comparable to nokia n95.
it`s horrible, like all htc devices. i hoped that sony will insert a hardware codec and/or sony/zeiss lenses, in view of the good name of cybershot. BUT NOTHING OF THEM :-(((
but the cam it`s comparable to the diamond`s cam.
photos are ok and better than n95`s pictures!really!, if you remove the battery cover of the diamond. (diamond`s lens will have better view without battery cover`s plastic lens)
but the videofunktion is realised only by software codecs, like all htc wm 6.1 devices.
that stinks and suxx! lol
cheapcheating. i will give 10 bucks more, when htc will insert hardware video encoding of vga res or more with 30 fps *G
and i saw the x1 will save as 3gp, what about h264 vids? most 3gp has got only 15 fps
quality
Quality of video capture is not that bad at all.
Definitely way better than that of HTC Touch/PRO/HD.
its not better than diamonds capture quality. its equal
and the diamond can store the vids as mp4.
i can`t find on my x1 the function to select storing codec.
(an other vid cap application could fix thiz)
looks pretty good, but the youtube samples of the INNOV8 still look miles ahead...
but what the hell, its not meant to be a cam after all
i dont have to look @ youtube.
i filmed with my own x1. and at vga it suxxx.
when you move, its very blocky and you got a lot of lost frames.
tho years old n95 takes 30 frame vga videos under all conditions.
(low light/fast movement)
useless to talk about filming in low light conditions with x1 @640x480.
its slideshow style. and if u using low light option, 1-2 pictures will
taken, and what you see is only blur/swirl effect.
and the LED lamp .... :-((
For me, quality of these samples is more than sufficient...

Of course there are better mobiles for video capturing (innov, renoir, pixon,...). But in no way you can capture comparable video with Touch Pro or with (e.g.) C905.
the only video i can download is the second one.
the video is fluid, but in daylight filmed.
and take a closer look to the movie. while moving, its very blocky and very unclear.
(set player to pause, and slide with the timeline slider. view captures from randomly tryed timemarks. then you will see, what i mean.
but a lot of people cant see the artefacts in realtime. i am an advanced videoviewer/computerfreak, and it hurts me!!!in realtime viewing, too!)
temporarly a can`t take photos or video outside, because i`ve hurt
my legs and can`t stand longer then 2-3 seconds. :-(
but next few days, everything went`s okay, i will take some
demo mov/pix for you. and than remind my words.
and take a closer look the the used audiocodec.... 8khz mono.
and exactly this will it hear like.... :-((( on nokia phones it`s much better.
hopefully, we can wait for software updates, or registry hacks (samplingrate/other codec).
the sound recording quality in video mode is POOR!
but, this only a result of the samplingrate. with other audio recording tools
with samplingrate @44,1, the quality is very good.

X10a Video ( will update 720p for comparison when its out )

Hello.
I made a video of me racing in F1 2010 on PC. When the 2.1 update comes out, i will record again in 720p and make a small comparison.
Take a look
Ps: At the time of this thread, the video is being processed, so quality will improve a little when its done.
people who don't want to show off their multihead setup would have made a reference video that shows the zoomfunction, some colors, contrast and stuff like this
either way, nice setup
hope it to be way too different

lol, im not showing it off. as i stated.
simply making a simple video now, then when 2.1 is out, i will record the same reply, and them put them side by side
The things is... like with the pictures, default camera app compressing the images too much same will happen with 720p.
If if we will have 720p, the clip will be so compressed (and the frame rate too low anyway) that won't make such a big difference in quality.

720 vs 1080 autofocus

Hey,
So i decided to record some of the fireworks this past fourth of july and i have some weird findings. The first video i recorded was in 720 (on accident) while the rest were in 1080. The first video appears to have a much clearer focus, and doesn't seem to lose focus as much as the 1080 video. It could be luck, or the conditions changed, i just thought it was a weird finding.
Anyone else notice something similar?
Yes, same behaviour on my SGS2.
yep.. in fact sgs2 sucks !
Yeah, thats "normal" and yes: it sucks. But I wouldn't go as far as to say the phone's crap because of it. But it sucks
i love this phone but the autofocus in 1080p sucks hard! none of the movies i made in 1080p are shareable due to autofocus constantly trying to focus...
hopefully its fixed in the next camera update

Took my phone to a 2 day long concert, here's what I liked

After 12 hours a day and recording almost 100 videos on the highest setting the phone battery never went down past 50% (each day mind you). The phone was starting to get warm about mid way through the day, not sure if it was the sun beating down on my pants (I was in Jacksonville, FL) or due to the constant recording, but it never got extremely hot.
I took some videos zoomed in max at 8x and the quality is honestly not bad. Definitely not HD quality but you can see quite well what you're looking at.
The audio came out better than any other I've seen or heard from others who were with me, two being S7 Edges, and another an iPhone 7 plus.
The stability when zoomed in 8x was also amazing to me. I could walk around someone who got in the way and it looked like I was barely moving, definitely didn't seem as if I were holding my phone in the air.
The way it picks up light was also better than any other phone I was able to compare with. When the later bands played in the dark I could still see so much detail and wasn't flushed out by either low light or having the stage lights drown out what my camera could see.
Definitely impressed and glad I had this phone with me for this event. Not professional quality but amazing nonetheless, so I figured I'd share with others my experience. I'm willing to answer any questions to anything I may have forgotten to give better details for. I don't really use my YouTube account to upload videos but if need be I could upload a few for those who are curious.
Is there a chance you could share some video samples of what you got?
I haven't had a chance to take my S8+ to a concert yet.
Does the zoom still severely distort the audio?
On the Note 7, audio zoom was enabled by default. It's a good idea, say if you're recording someone talking across the room and when you zoom in it increases the mic gain so you (may) hear them.
Problem is at a gig either on stage or front row with stacks of amps and columns ripping at 120dB and you decide to zoom in the audio distorts horribly. Like makes you want to stab your eyes out with a fork horrible! And there is no way to disable it. The solution is to not use zoom but when recording at 4K using up to 4X optical zoom is generally OK if you re-render your edits at 1080. Fortunately the gigs I did this with I was using a digital recorder and have decent audio tracks to go with the video. Otherwise I'd be screwed. I have not tried recording with mine yet but I may bring it to drum rehearsal and kick things up a bit and zoom in on the kit.

I have the videos up on my Facebook if you guys would like to check it out that way. Just drop me a PM and I'll give you my info through that.
Not too sure about the audio and zoom feature. Didn't even know that existed to be honest. I will say that there are a few I started out with no zoom and I zoomed in during the video but I don't think I really noticed a difference in audio quality. I'm not the pickiest when it comes to stuff like that and none of it is Hollywood material but still impressed nonetheless.
Ok been a while but I finally got to test this and can confirm the audio zoom "feature" is definitely still there! :|
So when recording events such as live venues with loud SPL particularly lower frequencies do NOT use the zoom if at all possible.
Your audio will be very distorted.
Otherwise, it shoots fine.

U11 video recording nitpicking

I've been using the Galaxy S8 Plus until I received my solar red U11 yesterday (glad I waited, it's very nice looking). Anyway, I am very impressed with the photo image quality of the phone (it is very comparable to the S8), but I have a few nitpicks about the video recording:
1) No 1080p/60 mode. I really don't understand why it doesn't have a 60fps mode when even phones from 2016 had it? It has 1080p/30 and 1080p/120 (for slow motion), so why no 1080/60? Is it overheating concern?
2) No way to turn of EIS in 1080p video recording mode? While 1080p is very stable due to its combined OIS and EIS, it also crops the view significantly when recording video in this mode (compare it to 4k, which is quite a bit wider but has no EIS). Anyway, the EIS is nice if you want that, but I think there needs to be a toggle or option to turn off EIS and have the wide recording mode in 1080p that is like the 4k mode. As it stands, there does not appear to be a way to change this.
3) 6 minute recording limit in 4k. I guess it's also due to overheating concerns, but why not just make it unlimited and have the phone's temperature monitoring stop recording automatically if it gets to a certain temp? Some people are reporting overheating stoppages even before the 6 minutes, but in cooler environments, we may be able to record indefinitely in 4k.
Things I DO like about the U11's camera though...
1) Photo app and quality are excellent. Nice Pro mode too.
2) Glad I can lock exposure and focus during video recording very easily.
3) Focusing pulling with the touch screen is very nice on the U11 (it doesn't rock back and forth when focusing like many other phone cameras).
4) Audio recording options are very nice (3d audio vs hi-res, and acoustic focus)

Thanks! It's good to see that they are working on adding 1080p/60, though it appears to be a ways off.
Another thing that bothers me (when compared to the S8 or iPhone 7) is that I can't seem to take a photo while recording in 4k. I'm not sure if that's a software or hardware limitation, but I used that all the time on those phones. I really like using the squeeze to open the camera, take a photo, and switch between front and rear cameras though!

Try Open Camera on XDA, it works shooting 1080P without EIS and no time length limitation on 4K.
I've also see the same issue on the HTC 10 in regards to the 4k and taking a photo while recording if you can call it an issue. I suppose no one had complained about it and they left it unchanged

It's a nice camera app, thanks. Tried various settings in the app for video recording. Looks like no matter what framerate you choose, it can't go above 30fps. I thought maybe it would let me shoot 1080p/60, but nope (even when setting it to 60fps, it still records at 30). Also doesn't seem to be a way to take a photo while shooting video in this app? Nice that you can shoot longer than 6 minutes in 4k though (I didn't try it yet, but I assume it works).

I call it an "issue" only because I have come to expect it when shooting video now. In fact, I used it quite frequently on my iPhone and Galaxy S8. Being able to take a photo without interrupting the video recording is a pretty important feature, in my opinion. I suppose one could load up the video in software and capture a frame manually, but it's a feature that other flagships have, so I miss it.

Indeed, my old year 2012 HTC One S supported shooting FHD video and taking a real photo at the same time and I owned a Galaxy S6 support that feature too. However, I think during 4K recording that no phone could take a real photo, all they do is just capture a frame from video clip and pretend that is a photo.

Right, I understand it's not an actual "photo" at the highest resolution, but I would still like the convenience of capturing a frame during 4k video recording like I can on all of the other flagships phones.
Wow I'm glad I found this post, I thought I was going crazy with the issues you mentioned, especially the cropped 1080p video! I hope they can fix that with the 60fps update, because it is really annoying.

1080p60 is being introduced in stock ROMs with versions 1.26 and higher.
Do you know if EIS for 4k video is planned? Thinking about buying the U11 instead of the much too expensive Pixel 2, but the lack of EIS in this case is a bit of a bummer.
