[NOOB GUIDE] KINDLE FIRE: ICS 4.0 Error Loop Message - Kindle Fire General

My story:
For noobs like me, its hard to fix something when you are unaware that you install an app that will potentially break your device or work inappropriately.
I had my kindle fire as a gift from my husband which is very upsetting to me that I accidentally broke it by just downloading an app that I didn't know it will cause a problem. This kindle fire that I have is important to me because its not just a gadget but its a GIFT from a special someone and its ok to me if I bought it for myself I could prolly buy it again..but its not.. I spent the whole night up searching for answers to fix this thing, took me a day to fix it *sigh* and glad I did.
Well..to make it short and simple to understand: If you downloaded the app that messed up your kindle fire here: http://syndicateapps.com/main/ICS_Releases.html
.I did not rooted my kindle fire before installing this app and I did not install TWRP too to recover it back to its normal state (This iv only known now, because I do not have knowledge about the risks of this app) but Then.. this is a the right simple guide for you.
FIRST THING YOU NEED TO DO:
1. If you do not have a USB cable to sync your device to your computer. Get one first
2. Connect your kindle fire using your USB cable and connect it to your computer.
3. Download Kindle Fire Utility http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399889
4. Extract the Kindle Fire Utility you just downloaded
5. Open up the folder click install_driver this is a windows batch file.
6. After installing, exit the application
7. Open up run from Kindle Fire Utility folder
8. Now you notice you will see alot of choices:
1. Bootmode Menu
2. BurritoRoot <Temporary>
3. Install permanent root with superuser
4. Obtain stock update .zip
5. Install latest TWRP Recovery
6. Extras
0. Recheck device status.
9. Type in number "2" which is : BurritoRoot <Temporary>
10. Did'nt work? , now choose option number "3" which is : Install permanent root with superuser and this will surely work as it worked in mine
*NOTE that some of the options in this utilities doesn't work as for you can't navigate your kindle fire because of that darn spam loop message.
11. Now that you have rooted your kindle fire, we need to go to
option number "6" which is : Extras
12. under extras choose "Install Google apps / Go Launcher Ex
-Now! Its time to go back to your Kindle Fire - At this point you will notice your kindle fire giving you a notification as to which app you want to run as default.
Now is the time to do the right thing, Revert it back to its original state.
"DO NOT CHECK THE BOX"
13. Select "kindle" Launcher and it should navigate you back to default.
14. Now you can delete the damned ICS 4.0 app that messed up your Kindle Fire.
and its up to you now if you wanna tweak it still but to me i just deleted all every little trace of that ICS app.
* This Guide is through my experience that worked for me, I intended to post this one to help newbies like me to recover their kindle fire. because I know how hard to find a guide that its simply to understand. Honestly, Iv been reading all day, and trust me, not even a single word they are mentioning that I understand. I even asked customer service help for kindle fire, didnt helped me either. I just tried it ALL-around and I almost broke my Alienware laptop because of this darn app, good thing I used my other laptop to do repair on my kindle fire *sigh*.
*If there is something missing, MODERATORS of this forum please feel free to edit.*
*ALL MY CREDITS GOES TO THE DEVELOPER OF KINDLE UTILITIES*

based on what I'm reading, u could have flashed this launcher
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20676760
in recovery and u shoulda been good to go
edit: damn, I didn't notice u wernt rooted first, ignore my ignorance.

Still not quite working
So i followed all the steps in this guide as well as the Kindle Fire utility Thread.
But when i get to the step 10 and 11 it says that Device not Connected.
adb tells me device not found, I've checked the c:/users/uname/.android/ and the adb_usb.ini file has 0x1949 in it.
under Device manager the kindle shows up under android phone as an android adb interface. No yellow ! or anything
Why is the device suddenly not recognized
not sure where it went wrong, i just want to remove the ICS 4.0 launcher.
I'm not wanting to root it, i'm sure once the ICS 4.0 is gone i could root without problems.
Am i missing something? I only downloaded the KFU, do i need to download android sdk or adb, i was under the impression that the KFU is all i needed.
Any help is appreciated
Stupid ICS 4.0 Launcher has really messed things up fore me.

Ok sense i couldn't get the adb stuff to work, i noticed that when i plugged the kindle in, right before the connected to computer message came up, it showed the notification tab very quickly so after about 30 mins i finally got the timing right with unplugging and repluging it to hit that bar in time and i uninstalled the app.
Took way too long, but at least i can use it now.

hi..me also facing the same trial and error method..but cannot get the timing correct...please help with some alternative way...me also a newbee..

Or you could delete it off the device with a app manager

[Q] How to sideload apps without rooting or using a file manager app

Hey guys,
I've searched high and low in this forum and others for a solution to my problem, I have been unable to find one. I'm looking for a way to sideload apps onto a Kindle Fire so that, after the third party app has been installed, I can clear the Launcher data and the next time I start the device it boots to the setup and welcome screens like the very first boot.
The reason I want to avoid rooting or having to download a file manager app to the device is that I am planning to create a script for the process.
Any advice or links to a helpful guide?

Now I'm confused, on the Android Forums you said it was so you could give it to someone as a gift and you wanted to give them the "first-time use" experience. I really don't see anyone needing a script for something like this but I may be wrong.
It's more of a fun project for me than anything else, a Kindle Fire loaded with apps makes for a great and affordable gift and I have other family members who I intend to give the Kindle Fire to as a gift. But I don't want them to feel as though I've been mucking with it

I completely understand, I still think the easiest way would be to just use ES file explorer, or something similar, to install them and then just delete the app. Maybe someone here will have a different idea.
I may be confused, but couldn't youbjust build a rom with the apps loaded in and flash it?

Perhaps. Can you link me to any guides on this?
Are you trying to make a script that will be run on a computer or on the Fire itself? If you're running the script on an actual device (terminal emulator, gscript, etc):
Code:
pm install /path/to/file.apk
In that case the .apk will need to be copied onto the device first. If you're running a script from a computer and have the device plugged in via USB you can use:
Code:
adb install /path/to/file.apk
...and for that one the .apk needs to be on your computer somewhere. I know 'adb install' doesn't require root. I don't remember if 'pm install' does, but I think it doesn't. Either way, you just need to get a copy of the .apks you want to install.
Cant you just reset the device to factory defaults from the settings?

That gets rid of your apps as well.

[Q] help needed with KF, BIG BIG NOOB???

Hi Guys, I am new to this and need some help. I just bought the KF, version 6.2.2 and wanted to get rid of the shocking front interface. I have searched the forums on how to do it. (But obviously not thorough enough).
I downloaded Kindle fire 0.9.3 and a few other programs and began the process.
I believe I rooted my kindle, however I cannot install fire fire fire. When I run kindle fire 0.9.3 with the kindle plugged in it says
ADB status: online
ADB rooted: yes
BOOT Status: 4000 (normal)
When I choose option 6 to install firefirefire it says
Installing firefirefire
"adb" is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
I have android SDk tool loaded on my computer.
I have TWRP loaded on the kindle.
I have checked device manager and everything seems to be ok.
Do I have to run all the options from the KFU menu.
I get the Yellow Traingle of death when I start up the Kindle but it will then load into the defualt user inerface.
Can someone please, please help this BIG NOOB OUT. All I want is to get rid of the **** bookshelf and have access to the Android Market place and other things.
regards
peter
If it's a yellow triangle with a fire in it that's the FireFireFire logo.
Thanks for that,
Is firefirefire a rom or is it something else. I though if load firefirefire I will get a rom which will give me a different user interface from the bookshelf amazon supplies the kindle with.
If that is not the case can someone explain what it is that I have and how to get rid of the bookshelf and install something better.
I need to know the process from the start to finish if possible.
Regards
Peter
It looks like the utility can not find adb command. Check the location of the adb at the tolls or files folders.
You may need to re-download the utility again.

adb should be located in kf utility's folder...
try using gscript instead.
All firefirefire is is an easy way to get into recovery ( so the yellow triangle of death is good). If you don't want to switch roms' then use KFU to flash gapps which will give you Google stuff and the market, and use that to download go launcher.
Sorry for being a complete NOOB.
I have connected my KF to my computer a looked through the files and folders, I cannot find a utilities folder. file
I found the ADB.exe is in the tools directory in KFU. Do I need to move it or re install something.
Also where can i get gapps and how do I flash it to the KF. Is it already their somewhere in the menu.??
LIke I said in my first post, all I want is google, android market and just a different user interface.
complete NOOB
launch kf utility again and select option 5

Rooted Kindle Fire 6.3 fixed using Kindle Fire Utility

Hey guys i have a Kindle Fire i rooted with burrito root 3 when it was 6.2
Okay so today i turned on my Fire only to see apps missing and so i proceeded to
go to my root app delete application and tried to uninstall the stock facebook app as superuser, i was then notified i wasn't rooted. I immediately went to /device/ checked system version and seen it was now 6.3
I went trolling the web for answers to root and found this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1568340
long story short i decided to take a risk and opened up Kindle Fire Utility hit the #3 key (Install Permanent Root with superuser) once the kindle fired back up (no pun intended lol) I was once again able to be superuser and fully rooted.
I just wanted to let people know 6.3 is still able to be re-rooted via Kindle Fire Utility
Take care and God Bless
When I woke today I seen update 6.3 on the kindle. I seen the posted link showing how to root the 6.3 update. I was able to root my kindle fire again using that post.
Every since I owned my Kindle Fire I was following the CM. Thought I would install CM9 and gave it a try. Besides the current Hardware acceleration issue which I'm sure it's being worked on. I really do like how the CM9 runs and feels so far.
Just cant wait for the Hardware acceleration to be fixed. Just kinda wish I could post in the CM9 post here. Let the guy know how much I like it.
I have just restored root with Kindle Fire Utility 0.94,
option 2
All fine by now!
.........edit..........
Only that I still have 2 problems:
- cannot install Winamp, at all, just gives me an error about "not available shared library"
- cannot install Titanium Backup. I had it before and after update it kept force closing. Now, when I try to install, it says "Insufficient Application Storage", which surely isn't the case, as I could install NFS shift after this error and it shurely had enough space to do that.
Does anyone know how to solve this? (
Thanks!
.........edit(2)..........
OK, I solved with Titanium Backup:
- I could finally install, after finding and deleting this file "app/data/com.keramidas.TitaniumBac.....odex"
(where points are, I am not sure what letters were). But I remember it was an ".odex" file. And after deleting it all went well!
.........edit(3)..........
OK, I "solved" with Winamp:
- Kinde Fire has some restrictions I wasn't aware of, that stopped Winamp from installing with some shared library, I had to downgrade back to the old Amazon version, and now it installs
My kindle updated 6.03 this afternoon and it worked perfectly with me

way, this took us weeks to perfect, so please respect the code. If you have recommendations, please post them,
we love to give you the feature that are important to YOU not us.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 1: Using Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome or Internet Explorer Download Kindle Fire First Aide 4.1.100-Beta:
KFFirstAide.zip
Note: Be sure to extract the package to C:\KFFirstAide
Update Java To The Latest Version here: Java SE Development Kit 7u25
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 2: Using either 7-Zip or Microsoft Zip, unzip the KFFirstAide100.zip to your C:\ Drive as C:\KFFirstAide
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 3: With your mouse, open the C:\KFFirstAide contents by double mouse clicking the C:\KFFirstAide folder
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 4: Find the RunMe.bat file. Right Hand Mouse click on RunMe.bat, select 'Send to', select Desktop (Create Shortcut). Now press the Left Hand Mouse button to create the Shortcut named RunMe.bat. Temporary disable the Android SDK.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 5: Find the RunMe Shortcut on your desktop, select it by left mouse click over the icon, then while on the icon choose Right Hand mouse click, select Properties.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 6: This will display the RunMe properties. Select the General Tab, change the top name to KF First Aide. Then click on the Shortcut tab, click on Advanced. Check 'Run as Administrator', click OK, then click Apply, then click OK. All windows should be closed.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 7: Double Mouse Click the new Icon named KF First Aide. You may be presented with a security window, just click Yes.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 8: Please click on the Windows Key plus Pause/Break, this will display the Windows System Properties. Next Click on the Advanced Tab and find "Environment Variables". Please click on Environment Variables and find the Path Statement. Carefully add at the end of the Path Statement:
Code:
;C:\KFFirstAide
Note: Do Not forget the ( semi-colon before the C:\KFFirstAide
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 9: That is it! The software is ready. Next we get the Kindle ready to Flash.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 10: Next, go to the Kindle, pull down the status menu, select More+ then select Security, make sure Enable ADB is ON. Last, depress the <- and select Device. Make sure 'Allow Installation of Applications' is On.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 11: Insert the Original USB Cable to the Kindle, please ensure you have a solid connection, this is VERY critical.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 12: Next, make sure the Kindle Fire is Turned Off. Take the other end of the USB Cable and carefully inset it into a free USB Slot on your Computer - be careful to not disconnect the other end.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 13 : The Kindle Fire should automatically turn on and boot regular Bootmode. If the Kindle does not turn on depress the power button until it turns on. Next select Option 15 in the Software. The Kindle will reboot and will now see a screen that says: Fastboot Kindle Fire.
Note: If Option 15 does not trigger the Kindle to boot into Fastboot, then your Bootloader is damaged. Please send SkOrPn a PM to order a Factory USB Cable.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 14: Place the Kindle on a safe surface so it does not disconnect when running the software.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 15: Launch the KF First Aide software by double mouse clicking on the KF First Aide icon.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 16: You will be presented with a Kindle Fire First Aide Menu, carefully select the operations you would like to perform on the Kindle.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 17: If the option states "Fastboot" you need to leave the Kindle as noted above, this is Fastboot Mode. As the last operation be sure to Wipe the Cache and User Data which is Backup Option 3 in the Menu.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 18: Next, we will disable "Fastboot Mode" and enable ADB on the Kindle Fire. Select Option 10 in the Software Menu, the Kindle will Reboot into Regular Mode.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 19: You may now perform the 'ADB Mode' options in the Menu.
Kindle Fire First Aide Note 1: Remember, after you perform the full Recovery, you are working with a Fresh Copy of the Software. ADB is disabled by default so be sure to Enable ADB under Security and Allow Installation of Programs under the Device Tab.
Kindle Fire First Aide Note 2: After the complete restore, please be sure to clear the Davlik Cache and the User Data by selecting Backup Option #3. You may also wipe the User Data and Cache by opening a Administrative Command Prompt within the KFFirstAide Folder and enter:
Code:
fastboot -i 0x1949 erase cache
fastboot -i 0x1949 erase userdata
fastboot -i 0x1949 reboot
Kindle Fire First Aide Note 3: The original versions of the Kindle Fire HD 8.9" with a software Versions 8.2.3 or 8.2.4 may find there Kindle Boot-loader loops to a Red Fastboot Screen. If your Kindle is stuck in Fastboot, please follow these steps to recover the Boot-loader: How To Recover Kindle Fire HD 8.9" Bootloader*
Note: Please be aware of two main options in the Menu - one is Fastboot Mode where you have several Menu Operations that use Fastboot to execute properly and two is ADB Mode where you have several Menu Operations that use ADB to execute properly.
Backup Option #1 Note: When selecting Backup Option 1 the images will be backed up to the SD Card in a folder named KindleBackup. Please copy this folder to your desktop until we are able to upload it to our secure servers. There will be a restore option in the future that will automatically pull YOUR images for restoration. There is a known Bug in Windows where you will not see the images in the Kindle Internal Drive which can be found in Computer. To overcome this issue, please download and install WiFi File Transfer then open your Web Browser to transfer these Backup files from your Kindle to the PC.
Backup Option #2 Note: When selecting Backup Option 2 the images are first copied to the Kindle, then they are transfered to your Computer inside a folder named Backup which can be found inside the C:\KFFirstAide folder.

Krsmqn,
We thought of you when we were developing this package, It took us over 4 months to perfect. We held back many feature, just wait until we release the Production Version of 4.2.3, it even made us smile. As we have said before,
we are truly honored to be part of the XDA Community and feel blessed to be able to offer this software to XDA Members. This package and version 4.2.3 is fee based elsewhere.
LOL, you typed in my user name so many times that I'm afraid if anyone does a Google search for me they will get re-directed to this thread first and foremost
I am honored you feel so highly about my work, really I do. Thanks for all you do as well. Wish I could develop software, but I am a hardware developer myself. Its Devs like you that make me want to own a Kindle, lol :good:
I was born to tinker... so this is definitely for me.
Questions on Version 4.2.3beta:
Does it come with preloaded non-stock launchers?
Will my device be rooted afterwards?
Will google apps be preloaded?
Or is it going to be like out-of-the-box new /with tweaks?
Thanks.

Krsmqn,
As we said, we really did think of you as we were developing the package. I said to my developer, "we have to notify
XDA User Krsmqn as soon as we launch this package...". The current Beta release includes all the 17 features mentioned
above including preinstalled ChainsDD Superuser so it is Rooted. By the time you get the cable, we will have released the
production version 4.2.3 which should include menu options to install: Nova Launcher, Go Launcher, Apex Launcher and
ADW Launcher. We will also have a menu option to install Google Play and Google Apps. In release 4.2.4 we will have
over 40 additional features which will include but not limited to: automated v6 Supercharging, automated build.prop
edits, automated services.jar refinements, automated Deodoxed, Automated Zip-alignment, and much much much more!
Just post what you would like to see immediately in production release 4.2.3 and what you would like to see in future
releases.

is in it's infancy and very raw. We plan to change the code to C# and pack everything into one executable for
portability, so anyone who does field service work can place this app on a thumb drive and launch it from the customer's
site. I love software development since the options here are limitless. Since mskip focuses on the Samsung, we decided
to focus on the Kindle and stay away from his area of expertise. Once this package is polished we will be ready to launch
custom ROM's for the Kindle. Much more to come.................

BELASCO,
Done. The request has been added to the software manifest, we will have this feature added before production
version #4.2.3. Thank you for making the feature request.
Making it "noob-friendly" to install new keyboards could be another consideration:. I'm enjoying the so-called "Hacker's Keyboard", but I recall having to jump through firey hoops to install it.

BELASCO,
That is a great request! I will add this to the Software Manifest now. Great idea BELASCO - no problem to automate that
install. I am aware of the difficulty and it can be done through automation. Thanks again!

BELASCO,
Like a universal media player, hmmm not a bad idea. Test a few, let me know if you feel VLC is the best. I have used
a few different ones, we will ad this idea as well.
Software
I'd like to see something that allows easily changed wallpaper. Something that allows you to add your own photos. I'm an amateur photographer with several HQ pictures that I'd like to have as wallpapers.
With photo's in mind, some kind of script, or whatever, that would allow you to customize and add pictures in the stock locker. I like the stock locker so I kept it. I just wish I could add a whole bunch of personal photos to it.
One more thing. When the DPI is lowered, the normal android lock screen returns but it has a black background. I have my DPI set at 180 and the black lock screen is still there. I like that locker too but wouldn't want to keep it w/o pictures. Only problem is, I love that look when the DPI is lowered. I really want to keep it at 180. So if there's any way to add the ability to add photos to the locker when the DPI is set below whatever the change point is, that'd be sweet.
Thanks.
P.S. per the media player idea, I like Pro Player. Just an idea.

Krsmqn,
Another wonderful idea. It is funny Krsmqn, we are working on the software at the moment and guess what feature we
are testing? The wallpaper idea! Yes, this feature will be included in future releases. I will look at the 180 dpi, I do
not see a problem with this integration. I will also look at Pro Player, I think this is the player we use on our Nexus
10.
This app might handle backgrounds for you. The lockscreen pix I've seen some posts on, but haven't seriously investigated.

Rooting Kindle Fire HD - continually fails

I am about ready to give up. I tried the "root-android.org" oneclick and it continually fails. The technical support for the rooting software from root-android.org is not helping. I'm not sure that the oneclick method has ever worked on a Kindle Fire HD 7.2.3. I have downloaded SDK and the ADB as directed and kindle does show up on my devices (32 bit with Vista running) but various methods can't seem to connect to the Kindle from the PC. I really want to be able to do more with the Kindle and with some help I believe that it can be done. Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. I do have a Macbook Pro, but everything I have read indicates that you need to use a pc and not a mac.

When I first went to the thread I started to read about the rooting procedure. I went to eat dinner and afterwards the same informationa thread isn't there. The first one stated that with vista I should load some corrective software. It also talked about entering some CMD commands and then rebooting.
After dinner I don't get the same steps when I log on???????

It worked - rooted my Kindle Fire HD 7.2.3
Thank you so much for the assistance in completing the rooting of my Kindle Fire HD 7.2.3. I have so much admiration for all the developers that take the time to help newbie like myself when it comes to modifying these devices. So you know, the procedure was VERY easy to follow for this 67 year old man. Krsmgn, I am so grateful especially to you for getting me on the right track.:good:
The only issue I have now is getting Google play to work. I completed all the steps except the last one to keep Amazon from interfering when I want to go to the Google Play store. I still don't see anything in my apps for Google Play and wonder if I did something wrong along the way. I was able to use my phone Google Play store login and password when installing the software.
I also have a proble with ES File Explorer in that I can't get to the area called for in step 16 of the proceedure for getting the Amazon apk file moved to the download file.

Sir do you have an app anywhere called terminal emulator? If so go in there and type su and tell me what it says? (Verifying that you have root) after that I may be able to help walk you through the process
Or....
Open ES File Explorer, open settings and choose root settings (down near the bottom) make sure all the boxes are checked. Then you should be able to access /system/.
As for Google Play, go here.

Haha probably a lot simpler to do his method. Also if you have a super user app open it and set it to auto grant permissions. Had an issue myself where it wouldn't show the prompt
Market stops
Fianlly see Google Play in the apps. I rechecked all the steps and found that I cannot move Vending.apk to /System/app. The failure indicates that the file cannot be moved from /sdcard/Download to /System/app.
I also can't figure out how to "ES File Explorer or Root Explorer, change permissions set to Owner: Read-Write, Group: Read and Others: Read". Is the procedure talking about tyhe Vending.apk file?
STOP - I was able to move the file (Vending.apk), rebooted the Kindle and now I can go to Google Play where it shows my already purchased apps for my mobile phone. It indicates that two of the phone apps are starting to download but that's it. Seems like it can't really download. The files are continually stating that they are "starting download".

Look in the settings menu (pull down status bar and click more+), find Applications, click, find Installed Applications, click, look for "Appstore" and force stop, clear data. Reinstall vending apk. Reboot.

Seems like you got yourself in a weird spot. Rather then trying to find the needle in the haystack, it's sometimes easier to simply start over from scratch. What I mean is to remove all google stuff and reinstall. I mean everything "google" that wasn't on your kindle when you got it.
Then... Start over here.
Give it a try. I have been right where you are and this has worked for me. Nobody said it was going to be easy to make something do what it wasn't intended to do.
All is well that ends well
Thanks so very much for your patience and assistance. I have everything working on my Kindle and I owe it all to you. I even have the living wallpapers, seeing all the online videos I couldn't before, using ES file explorer I can look at everything from root down.
Many thanks to you and all the developers at XDA.:victory:

chetek,
I am sorry to hear you are having trouble. The One-click Method does work on the Kindle Fire HD and 2 it is not preferred since there are many known Bugs with SuperOneClick. The first problem is the SDK, if you install the SDK and setup the environment variable correctly you will trigger Root MANY ANDROID and Qemu Root to fail since they already have a build in adb tool.
The problem with installing the SDK is several fold:
1. The SDK is over 500MB - The SDK is designed for Developers NOT End Users
2. There are only 2 programs used by the normal End User: adb.exe and fastboot.exe - they total less than 200KB
3. Qemu has its own adb.exe
4. SuperOneClick has its own adb.exe
5. Root MANY ANDROID! has its own adb.exe
So what happens is when SuperOneClick calls to it's internal adb.exe, this triggers the SDK adb.exe to start. They both use the same port so the are unable to communicate to the Kindle due to this port conflict. If adb.exe is lucky, it attempts to pull from it's own Root directory in an attempt to Push su ans Superuser.apk. Guess what? These files are not in the SDK directory so in the end, the utilities completely fail.
The solution? Remove the SDK, you will be able to Root the device in less than 5 minutes. Next you asked about Rooting the Kindle with a Mac, yes this can be done and is preferred over Windows since the Kindle driver is built into Mac OS X, here is a link to the steps:
[ROOT] How To: Root the Kindle Fire 7" HD or 2 with Linux/MAC - Noob (Simple) Version
Finally, since you have Vista, please be sure to apply this fix prior to Rooting the Kindle:
[Bug Report] Attention Windows 7 and Vista Users - Noob (Simple) Version
So the final conclusions are:
1. Remove the SDK
2. Remove the SDK Path Statement if Inserted into PATH
3. Verify Driver is functioning
4. Apply the Fix
5. Use the Mac if Windows continues to fail
I also have problems rooting my kindle fire hd its running 7.2.3
