A good rom suggestion?

hey!
Anyone have any good suggestions for a rom for HTC - Mytouch 4g? I am pretty much a n00b even though I manage to pull a complete ultimate true root and s=off lol.
i have the original tmobile stock rom though, is there a just Android 2.2 or Android 2.3 Vanilla rom for HTC mytouch 4g?!
I've seen EvilZ and Ice galicier , but I am not sure which one to go about .
Any (good) suggestions would really help!

Search the dev section for nightly CM7, Its very vanilla-ish gingerbread and very stable btw, some pros?...improved battery life, open to customization, overall a better looking ui, runs silky smooth, and the kernel supports oc up to 1.5

1. Regarding how stable it is..its super stablr considering its still an alpha and i trust it enough to use it as my daily driver (i need 100% reliability and the phone has never let me down). Only known bugs are qik not working (and its a 2.3 compatibility issue rather than a rom issue) and you can use tango instead, ffc has a reverted x-axis effect xD..., mms might be blurry (which is fixed by changin the ua undr mms settings) and some may have other bugs i have not yet noticed
2. Your current 2.5 cwm will not work with gb, you will need to flash any 3.xxx version to install cm7. Cwm is designed to do backups of ur current working system and can be restored in the events of ur phone acting up (i.e bootloops or major issues...) although its also used to easily install .zip files (cm7 is a rom contained in .zip file and will need to be installes via recovery), its used also to wipe the system cache, dalvik cache and/or full wipes in the events of issues.

Thats the nightly thread, you will have a "nightly" update you can flash thru recovery
4. If u go to cm7 you will have to (must) do a full wipe. Download titanium backup and back up ur existing apps and data (dont wanna lose ur angry birds progress), once cm7 is up just download tit bcup again and you'll have ur data back.

one question at a time, bro.
1)the CM7 Nightlies are "Fairly" stable, though they do have bugs, as they are not fully complete (then again, no rom really is devoid of bugs and things to improve).
2)as for flashing CWM a second time, sometimes the recovery doesnt stick and when you boot into recovery, you will still go to the stock recovery. The second flash of CWM should fix this, and you should go to the CWM screen.
3) The purpose of CWM is to flash the various ROMs you'll find in the Development Section of this area. It also allows you to create nandroid backups, which will allow you to restore your phone to a specific state in time if something goes wrong or something (also helps to flash back to a rom without having to reinstall everything, which takes forever)
4)to flash a gingerbread (either CM7 or otherwise) you'll need to flash the CWM 3 to your phone manually, using the methods laid out in several threads in the Dev section. then you'll need to flash the rom, plus the Gapps for that rom (google apps like gmail, market, etc)
5)and yes, flashing a new rom will wipe all the data f(apps, accounts, call and text logs, etc) from the previous rom the previous (or youll need to do so before flashing). Now you see why you make nandroid backups also, using a backup application like titanium or MyBackup can make that process much simpler.

Okay, so I have Rom Manager Preimum that is 3.0.0.7 and since I flashed it currently, so CWM is 2.5.1.2 .
and I need CWM 3.x?
Regarding CWM 3.x? theres ClockworkMod 3.0.0.5 and clockwork-3-20110116-MT4G.img .
Which one of the above CWM 3.x, is better to use? Also, they are in .img format, so how would I go about flashing it?

And then, I download CM-7 and transfer it to my phone via usb cable to the sd card. Then use ROM Manager to flash it?!

And yes, you are right. All roms have flaws, they all need to be worked out . But, this tmobile rom is just a bit annoying .
I posted a reply already, so I believe i know how to go about doing this CM-7 stuff...but just need to make sure I go the steps and necessary backup done.

p.s. can you transfer phone contacts to simcard in this CM-7 rom? tombile has this option shut off for android 2.2 for G2 and MYT4G~! i know HTC Desire Z Bell's rom has the option to save contacts on the simcard, :S. Unless theres some other issue that i am not aware of it.

well, Im running a Desire HD port (gorillaSense), so my rom has that feature, but I havent used CM7 in a little while. However, if you sync your contacts to google instead of t-mobile, youll have all of them no matter what rom you use, no matter if it has t-mobile contacts or sim card contacts or anything.
and yeah, the t-mobile rom is annoying, thats why I got off it as soon as I could and never looked back. Personally I prefer the Sense ROMs, but I can see the merits of the CM and AOSP ROMs too, its personal preference.

K, so i checked the settings on the contact application and you can only export your stored contacts to the SD card, you are able to import from SIM but not to export to SIM. Like the post above stated though, as long as you are on an android phone you will have your contacts synced

[Q] What to do after rooting?

I perma-rooted my T-Mobile G2, but now I'm lost.
Since I can't flash official ROMs, what can I do to update OS? Are there any options besides CM7? If I switch to CM7, does it mean I lose all my previous installations? And does it mean I'm stuck with CM forever? When do you expect official version of CM7 to be released?

You can flash any ROM you want. There are many good solid ones in the Development forum here and other android forums of course.
If you're looking to back up your apps before you install a ROM (because you must wipe all data when installing new ROMs) I'd advise you download an app called Titanium Backup. I use it regularly when switching ROMs and it really is necessary. This can back up all apps, app data, and even system data if you want. You can then restore after flashing your new ROM.
CM7 is at RC-1 (Release Candidate) which means that it has been declared stable enough with few enough bugs for the general public. I've personally been running nightlies for a few weeks now with no issues, and the RC-1 seems to be similar. There really is no date for when it will become an official release, but if you're up for waiting that's totally understandable.
If you don't wanna go with the CM7 RC route, you can always go to one of the other Sense-based ROMs, or even CM6 which has been extremely stable for a long time now. You can always just check out one of the stock 2.2 roms as well, they're often optimized with no bloatware and often run quicker than the stock ROM with perm root you have now.
Changing ROMs is easy, and just because you decide one doesn't mean you can't switch to another. Just use the app "ROM manager" to backup, wipe, and install different ROMs as you see fit.
Basically which ROM you choose is up to you. Just look through the dev forum and check out the offerings, read then ask questions and try them out. I definitely recommend reading some of the stickies about backing up/flashing/etc. before you get going.
Kinda hard for me to give more info because it seems like you're pretty new. I'd just advise that you read up on everything and always do backups before you flash any ROM or update in order to restore if you run into issues.

1. Download and install ROM Manager and within ROM Manager flash ClockworkMod Recovery. This will allow you to create and restore complete backups of your phone. This should be the first thing you do. Second, create a backup (a Nandroid). It will be almost impossible to screw things up permanently with ClockworkMod Recovery installed and a backup on your sd card.
2. After you have a backup created, you can start trying different ROMs and if you don't like it, just try another one or restore your backup. You can even have multiple backups of different ROMs and switch back and forth if you want.
3. You are going to see a lot of references to gapps, which is short for Google Apps. Many ROMs come pre-loaded with gapps - Cyanogen was stopped by Google from incorporating them into his ROM's so the package is made available to flash immediately after you flash a CM ROM. Once you log in to Google with your account (use the same one every time) all your market apps will start downloading from the market automatically - that is all the apps that you had actively installed before you switched ROMs. Your phone will be sluggish at first while it updates all your market apps. To backup apps that you've installed from your sd card, download Titanium backup.
4. Now that you're rooted you aren't stuck with anything. Your options are wide open. Just look over the XDA site. It'll be obvious how much you can do with your phone now.
I'm on CM7 now and its very stable. Download build #41 - 42 should be out by the morning. If you decide to go with that, you won't believe how much more your phone has to offer than the stock ROM. I don't believe you'll ever want to go back to stock again, but if you do there's information here in the forums to do that including unrooting your phone.

I agree with this, read about the different roms in the G2 Development Section especially.
It's a bit confusing with all the roms, but as long as you backup your rooted setup now, you should be free and fine to try several different ones. (See step 1 about by EdKeys).
I recommend purchasing Titanium Backup...it will allow you to reinstall all your apps relatively quickly and keep all saves/settings.
Try out a sense rom (for example Virtuous) as well as CM7. I tried out sense before, but it makes the phone feel slow despite being very cool. When I first rooted my G2 I went straight for Cyanogenmod 6.1.1, as it was the stable version. Cyanogenmod 7 RC1 is way better.

Also, this isn't stated anywhere normally, so I'll share with you: I absolutely suggest using ROM Manager for most everything - it's a GUI for Clockworkmod, basically, and makes things a bit easier.
HOWEVER
The only ROMs you'll find in ROM Manager are ones that the developer has submitted. Not all devs care that much, so you'll find a TON more ROMs to try in the Development subforum. To flash one of those, simply download the .zip file of the ROM to your memory card (it doesn't matter where, you could put it on the root or you could create a 'romstotry' folder if you wanted).
Once you have the zip file on your memory card, open ROM Manager, choose 'Install Zip from SDcard' and show ROM Manager which zip file you want to use. IT'll then pop up and ask if you want to wipe, and if you want to backup your current ROM.
If you're switching between two different ROMs, you *always* want to wipe. Always. If you're simply installing a new version of the ROM you currently have installed, you don't *need* to wipe (unless the dev specifically says that you need to, so read the changelogs), but it's a good idea to do so anyways. You'll have a bit more setup to do, but wiping will prevent most problems that people seem to have.

Hi - the first thing I did after perma-root was change the boot animation for my G2 - you can do it by hand, or you can use an application located in market - just search for 'boot animation.'
After that's it's straight to the custom ROMs - I'm using Sense Virtuous 1.0.0 and loving it.

Once you root install this:
Acer Recovery Installer
That will install CWM (recovery).

You should install the Acer recovery installer first, then boot into CWM. When you are in there you will have the option to perform a full backup. This backup function will become your best friend.

IMHO the stock based ROMs are the most stable, and trouble free. Head over to the DEV section and pick one out

There are plenty of ROMS to choose from. Some are better than others, and some work better for others. Taboonay seems to be the most popular. I liked Lightspeed because it basically removed EVERYTHING that I didn't need. Citvao seems to be gaining momentium. There is also another guy by the name of THOR who created a custom ROM that incorporates some files from the transformer stock ROM that is pretty good too.
I'd try them all and see what one you like best

Steps to using CWM?

I have taken a short cut in using it by watching a YouTube video for installing a custom ROM and not learned all the in's and out's of using CWM.
I had installed the OTA HC 3.2 over a rooted 3.1 and lost my rooting as I expected. I decided I wanted to have root capabilites but with HC 3.2, so I found the (Oct 5 )version here and started over again.
I started with the Method 2 approach to install HC 3.2 update (that was already rooted here on this web site) to get to HC 3.0.1. However, initially when I got to installing the HC 3.2 zip it just booted afterwards and then went to a blank screen. So I tried it again only not doing all the clearing of user data, caches, etc., that was mentioned in the YouTube Video for installing a custom ROM. That worked. I now have a Acer Iconia 16 GB A500 rooted with HC 3.2 on it which what I wanted.
I would like to try some other ROMs and still go back if I could but I'm not sure about what exactly has to be cleared every time you load a new ROM. I don't want to have it hang again to a blank screen and maybe screw it up so I can't fix it.
Any directions?
Oh, BTW, when I installed the HC 3.0.1 from Method 2, it was so unstable that I couldn't make a WIFI connection. I had to go right to 3.1 to be able to use WIFI and get Acer Recovery Installer and continue on to installing HC 3.2 rooted.

This has been posted in another thread by another member, and I saved it. I just can't remember who posted it again.
It's how I do EVERY flash and NEVER have problems.
"Before installing:
Boot into CWM
1/wipe cache
2/wipe data/factory reset
Advanced Menu:
3/wipe dalvik
4/wipe battery stat
Mount and Storage Menu
5/format (system, data, cache )... leave SD card alone.
install the zip ( new rom ) file !
Once done installing... repeat steps #1 - #4 only ( this is to assured that you are cleaned 110% in regard to the NEW rom that you have just installed )
DO NOT DO THE STEP #5 AFTER THE INSTALLATION !
Reboot system into initial Android greeting screen."
Some would say it's a bit on the "overkill" side, but better safe than sorry.

Oh, BTW, I have read your other posts on this site and like what you have to say. Also, the last step you have, Step 5, isn't in the YouTube video. Maybe that's where I fouled up and somehow recovered by doing again without some of the clearing. I think I just lucked out and got it working. Initially, without WIFI, I was stuck on how can you install Acer Recovery Installer without going to the "Market"? I had to go to 3.1 to get WIFI and then install it from the Market. I searched the internet with a computer for it, but couldn't find the apk to download so I could move it to a SD card and the Acer. Anyway it's working now and looking forward to more new ROMs and maybe Ice Cream if that's going to be the way to go in the future.

Unfortunately he cannot use Acer Recovery Installer as long as he does not have root and that is why he cannot backup his current configuration i.e. OTA 3.2. Taking the risk of reverting is in first place if he insists on using a custom ROM.

[QUIDE] Install Paul's ICS Port and Restore HC

This is just a mini guide to help you flash ICS and restore back to fully functional Honeycomb.You re doing everything on your own risk.Don't bother asking Paul for further instructions.If you still hesitate to flash and try then you re not ready for such things and its better to stay with Honecomb until Asus decides to roll out the ICS OTA
Preparations:
1)Make sure you ‘re rooted and you have clockwork mode recovery installed!
2)Make sure you have enough free space on your external SD-card.
3)Download the latest ICS port and place it in your externals sd-card root.
3)Boot into recovery and perform a Advanced nandroid backup. You will need around 1GB of free space in the SD-Card.
Installation:
1)While you re on CWM recovery perform a “Wipe data/factory reset”.

Going back to Honeycomb.
1)Making that nandroid backup was really crucial.In case you didn’t like it at all or you find it still buggy you can restore your system prior to the ICS state.
1)Shut down your tablet.
2)While off keep pressing volume down and at the same time press and hold the power button. After a while you ll see the ASUS logo and on the top of the screen you ll see some small letters.Quickly release everything and press volume up. This will get you into recovery mode! (credits to xuser)
3)Navigate through the menu and choose Backup and restore. Choose restore,select your image (usually the title is the date when the backup was created) and the process will begin.
4)Because the CWM Recovery wont backup the HC kernel you must flash the kernel afterwards in order to boot back to Honeycomb.In case you dont have it you could always flash the ROM you were using before right after the nandroid restore process without applying any wipes.That way you ll have a fully functional Honeycomb tablet like it was before! (thx ValenteL for the reminder)

Thanks for Your nice guide. Whit this I advanced to install the ICS ROM and it work very well.
But before the step 3 of Going back... must have something more.
The recovery 3.2.0.1 don't make the kernel backup. In this case the Restore don't have the HC kernel. I made Restore whit the ICS kernel flashed and after restore the TF don't started. I closed, enter on recovery and flashed the HC Kernel then rebooted and HC rom started well.
When people don't have HC kernel to flash make a ROM install only to choice of language (here the HC kernel was flashed yet). Close here, enter on recovery and restore. Work well.

You re completely right.I forgot to add this part into the guide!

Please edit your op to say that if you have problems following this guide or questions about the rom, please don't ask them in paul's development thread. Now that you put together this guide people who probably should NOT be attempting to use paul's INCOMPLETE ROM are thinking it's ready for use because this guide is now in the general section. This is going to bother paul and possibly distract him and others working on finishing the rom.
Noobs are already wandering into the development thread, citing this guide, asking questions that have already been answered.
Good intentions here with this guide, but i think it was premature..if you need a guide to figure out how to flash a specific incomplete rom then you probably aren't prepared to use that rom or rollback to your old rom, imho

I believe that people should have something to rely on when trying new stuff and not only a zip file.
We all know that when we mess with custom roms,kernels,mods etc our device can brick,become semi functional or whatever.
This is for people that want to experiment with something new!

Not trying to be mean to them, but they don't need to bother paul he is doing great work for free, us non dev tf101 owners can help with questions so long as they don't post them in his dev thread, i for one don't mind answering questions on his behalf so he doesn't have to be bothered by them

In my opinion this is a generalist guide for all ICS or HC ROM's. I Installed 5 ROM's on Transformer and many updates and I can confirm that this is right.

Yes, but honestly if you needed the guide, you are still a noob, no offense but i think everyone here would agree.
And, if you are a noob, you are likely not to want to use the ics wip rom for anything but experiment, as it is missing many functions that general users cannot be without.
Just be patient, paul's ics will be just as good as other custom roms, when it has been finished

Yes I agree You. On HC I think Im'not a noob but here to install a ics wip I am a noob. I needed this guide to decide advance to.
Now the HC development is a little stoped and I will go work and test whit this ICS for a time. I like the ICS. I don't wait, now I will test all updates of this.

Great guide. One suggestion though you should probably highlight or bold the part where it says you have to flash the kernel. I did catch this in the thread and did flash the kernel. As i found out the hard way you need this if you have overclocked and want to go back to stock. It is probably a good idea to download the origial stock kernel from revolver parts (if you are using revolver I'm sure that prime et al have something similar) or elsewhere. Not having the proper kernel can really be a BIt of a CHallenge.

Somebody, please. I've had my tablet running rooted versions of Thor's rom, I'm currently running the ICS one...and honestly, it's too much. I just really want to go back...to how the thing was when I bought it. Then I'll just OTA to the newest OS available. Somebody please help

Wish I could help though, I'm not into ROMing so I have no info but I'm sure someone will come along or you can try using the search [if you haven't already]. I'm pretty sure you're not the first person who's come along wanting to revert back to stock.

Like all the little glitches and things in the ROMs really add up...I just want stock back and I'll wait for ICS. It was fun while it lasted but now I'm into hardware modding.

You are running experimental version of Thor's ROM, of course there would be a lot of glitches. I've tried almost all HC ROMs out there and the one I'm sticking with is Thor 14.2, only glitch in that ROM is that the rotate lock switch does not work.
Note: Reason I'm using 14.2 is because that is the only ROM that play nice with my GPS.

Run Acer recovery installer, load Acer recovery, run iconia root and remove root. Put the Chinese 3.0.1 unsecured kernel on your SD card, should be named update.zip.
Reboot to recovery, It will automatically run the update.
When you have 3.0.1 on your tab, go to settings>about>updates and let it update to the latest version of android, you may need to do this a couple of times as it seems to only go up to the next release of android.
All fixed, back on stock android and no root....

Cant you just boot into CWM. And restore the anand backup that you created before flashing any roms.. Then boot load acer recovery installer and use it to install STOCK RECOVERY..

If not just look for a full STOCK ROM And flash it...

To be honest, the ONLY way to get a nandroid backup of 3.2 for me was to go ack to 3.0.1... At this point I no longer can get a backup of my stock rom... So was pointless making a nandroid backup of the buggy OS that the unsecured 3.0.1 rom is....
I don't know if anyone else had this problem but it was a pain in the arse for me....

Do what ultramag69 said, and you will have an unrooted up to date A500!
Btw, my A500 works great whith Thor's 14.2 Rom...especially 3G
