[Q] WajkIUI 1.12.16 ICS and data manager - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

One more thing I've noticed. Even though I have mobile data disabled (either in the menu or in the widget), google maps or whatever uses GPS overrides that setting and enables mobile data. Is that a feature or a bug? I'd really like to control that data flow - as in not allow mobile data to get enabled by itself.

Solved with setting
To answer myself (and to those interested).
Apparently AGPS is to blame. It makes the connection regardless of data manager setting.
So to disable AGPS, you have to go to:
Personal > Settings > My Location > Automatic Assisted GPS (turn to OFF).

Turn off data roaming

Hi!
Going abroad and dont want to risk a huge data roaming-bill. Is there any way to turn off data roaming? Preferrably Wifi would still work, but if that's not possible then all data off.
HD Tweak is a nice little application which includes an option to disable data connections all together. I'm pretty sure this option will prevent you recieving data even if you tried to (ie not just background tasks) but will still allow wi-fi to work.
NoData

You might want to give "NoData" a go. This very small application (.cab) install creates an icon called NoData in programs. If you select this it runs the small app and asks what data connection you want to disable or re-enable.
It is ideal for what you want and many use it. Take a look at Paul's work here on Modaco (another good WM site): http://www.modaco.com/content/pocket-pc-software/246171/new-free-utility-nodata/

this app is disegned to disable automatically data in roaming...
I use NoData. Handy app which allows you to toggle Internet/data connections on/off so only wifi is available

Best way to ensure no data charges when roaming?

I'm going to France from the UK this week and obviously don't want to be stung for any roaming data charges.
What's the best way to ensure this doesn't happen on the HD2?
Should I just flick the 'Data connection' in 'Comm Manager' to 'Off'? This won't just come on again by itself will it?
The only thing I have auto connecting via data is google sync emails/calendar/contacts anyway. Everything else like stocks, twitter, weather etc is set to manual (as far as I know).
There is an option (that I haven't used) in BsB Tweaks app. Press Menu (right softkey) and then 'Data Connections' and finally 'Off'.
I was in a situation like you few months back when travelling to the states, but I was on a HTC Touch Dual... Back then I used Advanced Config to switch off Data Connections just to be sure and that worked. I can't say if it'll work on HD2.
Active Sync lets you disable the connections when roaming in it's menu as well...
Hope this helps a little.

I'm using Nodata on my HD2 - works flawlessly.
http://htcdriver.com/index.php?page=nodata
+1 for nodata!
Nodata all the way.
Agree
NoData ... works ....
You don't need an extra application like Nodata.
Just go to All Settings --> Connections --> Connections --> Advanced --> Select Networks and select "My Work Network" from both drop down lists.
This ensures that the phone can only use WiFi.
But if you do need gprs/hsdpa - using nodata is a much shorter way.
Try this. Completely automated disabling and re-enabling!

am going overseas is there a software or setting to prevent data totally?

as above.. i dont want some google maps or weather refresh to kill my wallet !!
any program or tweak to totally disappear data no matter how often programs call for it?
much appreciated
Search this forum for an application called NoData.
Airplane mode?
Use this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=503131
Airplane mode disables everything
oh...since im using prepaid services, is it a must to install the nodata tweaks?
aren't there any data on/off selection under the default settings on the phone?
that is to say, if i did not off the data connections, the phone will automatically engage gprs or sort to update weather and maps which will in turn kill all the credits in my prepaid without me realizing? that's scary...
bsb tweaks let's you disable data connections. Just tried it and when trying to establish a connection it gives me an error telling me it's not possible to go online.
so the tweaks works in another words? i will only be using wifi to go online with hd2..

Deactivate data connection on HD2

On my Diamond, I had a handy little application called NoData which deactivated data connections so that I didn't get charged for using mobile internet by mistake.
Is there any way to do the same thing on the HD2?
Thx.
I am also looking for an app that can do this.
I'm off abroad in a couple of weeks and I am already having nightmares about the bill I may have when I return if I can't find a way to deactivate the data!

Just use the same app
Grtz,
Degake
there is a app out there called...................nodata
oh, are you sure it works on the HD2?
nodata works fine but i use bsb tweaks to disable data connections manually before crossing the border so i can enable it just in case
Since I have no data plan with my carrier i disable connections not referring to WIFI alltogether, I just go to Settings, connections, menu, connections, advanced, select network, and put "work network" (or something, I have it in italian) to both.

there is a vey simple way to deactivate the data connection: long press the on/off key and you will get a little menu: one of the menu items is deactivate data connection. Press it and it's done.

That terminates it, but it doesn't stop it coming back on when an app tries to use it.
Is there a reason that no-one has suggested airplane mode?
no cab needed, the answer is on the HTC site:
How do I disable my 3G/GPRS Data Connection?
Follow the steps below to ensure that your phone will never connect to a GPRS/3G Data Connection.
1. Go to Start > Settings > Menu > All Settings > Connections > Connections
2. Tap Add a new modem connection > then under Select a modem, select Celluar Line (GPRS) > Name the Connection "Offline" >Tap Next.
3. In the Access point name text box input "Offline" and tap Next.
4. On the next page tap Finish.
5. On the second Connections Menu, tap Manage existing connections and select "Offline" then click OK.
Re-enable the data connection if you want to connect to the internet via 3g/Edge.
1. From the home screen, slide to the Settings tab, Wireless Controls > Data Connection.
2. Select your Country and Operator
3. Tap OK.
4. On the subsequent screen, tap Yes.
The phone will automatically configure itself with the appropriate settings.
Note: When disabling the connection in this way, your phone may report errors when trying to connect to "Offline." The error is caused by the phone being unable to connect to a data source due to the settings, and is normal.

This is what i want to know. How can we auto disconnect data connection after certain period of time. For example if i set up my device to update weather every hour using EDGE, it wont disconnect automatically but i want it to auto disconnect once the weather is updated regardless of i notice it or not. How do we achieve that?
Hello, I have installed the modaco no data app and it works a treat.

Switching data roaming on/off

Is there a way to switch data roaming on/off easily on the X2? Somehow I do not seem to find any options (it is very easy on Android phones through a dedicated menu setting in the preferences). Thanks for suggestions!
Normally if you set up ActiveSync properly and you uncheck in Schedule "use above settings when roaming" you ought to be safe. Maybe you should also check the Fast Gps settings to update satellite data manually only. This is about it when it comes to default apps. If you have installed other apps, rss readers, email clients or web browsers you should pay more attention to their connection habits.
Or you can try these apps:
No Data In Roaming: automatically restricts data traffic when roaming.
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-nodatainroaming.html
Data Controller : manually switch data connections.
