My First impressions with KP8 - Galaxy S II General

First of all this is for the noobs, like me, Devs or smart users stay outta this
Below are/were my impressions after playing with KP8 for 45+ minutes,
• Hell of a lot better than previous build, KP1. Yes, I will call it a Beta, finally
• Phone calls were good, in ear volume was good and loud enough for me.
• Vibration intensity is FINALLY back to normal, unlike KP1 where it was so faint that you could barely feel it.
• Ringtone volume is normal.
• Incoming call UI is same as before and the Reject and Answer button doesn't animate while sliding. (Beta)
• Phone signal is rock solid and stable.
• 3G does work, Wi-Fi too.
• Noise Cancellation feature is FINALLY here, you can turn it off/on manually. It was presented in the previous build too.
• Stock broswer is brilliant, smooth as hell, no lag of whatsoever while Auto fit enabled. Lot of customisation options are there too, like font size, invert colors, Desktop view, Bandwith management, Offline reading etc... Flash plugins worked well too, make sure you download the latest Flash Player.
Sad part keeps remaining, no EXIT option
• Contacts have more options to display, attached screenshot.
• Stock GMail app is upgraded, same like KP1, no multi touch/pinch to zoom.
• Stock Email app is kinda weird, all black background, maybe there is a way to change it, didn't have time.
• Clock, Calender, Gallery, Maps, Calculator, Task, Memo (new icon), Mini diary, Voice Recorder, FM Radio, My Files, Voice recorder everything are same as in GB, so no, Sammy won't update those thing in TW for ICS, maybe.
• ICS Lockscreen is weird, doesn't work well.
• Camera works completely well, every settings work, same goes for 1080P Video recording.
• Task Manager is ICS style, slide left to close an app, cool.
• LWP does work, however there are some lags.
• 480X800 Wallpapers DOESN'T fit in desktop! Same like KP1. Should and will be fixed.
• Market works perfectly fine, downloading app works good too.
• No Swype, not that I expected.
• All the network based options were there, including APN's.
• GPS is fine, got lock in indoors!
• YouTube app works perfectly fine, some new options were added.
• Stock video player somehow played 1080P file, it was not watchable for me. Audio was intact on the other hand.
• Music player is SAME.
• Had 3 FC's so far, once system also froze.
• The smoothness allover UI is pretty fine, HW acceleration is definitely there, I like the elastic type scrolling, however it need more polishing, undoubtedly.
• Overscroll glow is reduced somewhat, with ICS color instead of blue. I still hate it anyway.
• Stock fonts worked. Not in Browser and other places though.
• Connection with PC worked.
• Unread SMS icon changed in LS, (I don't like it) and there is NO missed call notification icon in LS!
••• What am I doing? Of course I am going back to my Nandroid backup , no way this was a daily ROM for me.
If I remember anymore I'll update, feeling sleepy.
Attaching some screenshots.
Regards.

How responsive is the accelerometer? When you flip the phone, doors it take long until the content flips?

Live Wallpaper

I found the whole thing to be somewhat unresponsive and the lack of proper SD card support was killer for me.
- Then there was Samsung's firmware update notification that failed when I tried to accept the terms and would not go away.
- Certain apps like gmail would crash and the hole phone would become unstable.
- Overheating problems
- Lockscreen is buggy

Needed a small help. In case, any one of you is going to revert to a more stable ROM, can someone check whether this mod for skipping music when screen off works before doing so?

Honeycomb 3.1 Initial Impressions

If Honeycomb gives every users a mind-blowing experience from Froyo and Gingerbread, Honeycomb 3.1 is quite a update in terms of user experiences.
It improves over quite a number of areas to fix the glitches from here and there due to a first generation OS release.
One phrase to describe it is
Smoothness and responsiveness.
I had a head-to-head comparison with iPad 2 (my friend's) and my Xoom last weekend.
While apps I can find almost what I need from both iOS and Android (tablet compatible), one observable issue is the screen and apps responsiveness. Even my Xoom at that time was overclocked to 1.5G thanks to Tiamat's kernel, it barely matched iPad 2's screen by screen browsing, web page browsing and speed of apps opening etc.
With this 3.1 update, I thought Google hit home run on this front.
Other improvements includes previous mentioned by other folks
1. Recovery boot option appears (from folks who updated "naturally")
2. Under system update , there is a button to hit "check now" , so that we don't need to change system time to force a check everytime.
3. Resizable widgets (Gmail widget tested) is very handy
4. other publicly announced improvements.
Still exploring features now, rooted with instructions from this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1073884
Thanks stachre!
Will post a quick review with more screenshots on website. =)
Happy xooming folks!!!
Along with your points, I like that the recent apps bar now scrolls as well.
The YouTube app looks awesome in HD.

Bluetooth sucks. My keyboard keeps dropping when the mouse is connected. Other than that this thing seems great. Just waiting for some new kernels to drop now!
The new Quick Controls in the browser are fantastic. Overall the browser is much more responsive.
I've also noticed the keyboard lag seems to be gone.
Other differences are minor....
- the selection carrot when typing is more green
- the keyboard clicks as you type
- the Wi-Fi icon shows when you are uploading, downloading
I'm sure I will find more but its only been an hour since I flashed.

do you still have to be rooted to use a screenshot app?
I'm liking the performance enhancements.
For the browser quick controls, just to go settings in the browser, advanced and google labs.
I don't see any addition to leave comments yet in the market though.

Labs is a section in the browser options where you have a few options to alternate your UI for example. One of which are the quick controls.
And they changed a bit so they got even better. Just try them...

He got confused on your questions.
his answer number 1 which was no, meant that when you actually turn it from horizontal to portrait, it still lags slightly before changing the screen orientation..
and his number 2 was to answer your actual question, which according to him is yes, it runs smoother than before.....
I'd like to see this for myself, but I'M STILL WAITING!

Portrait is smoother, but still not as smooth as landscape on mine. The update is fantastic though. Overall performance is better. The quick controls redefine tabbed browsing to me. No complaints.
The quick controls are two "rows" thick now instead of 1 and there are a few more controls. It is more definitely different from before as I used the quick controls heavily and noticed the change instantly. Overall a much nicer experience.
Has media playback improved? I'm mostly interested in how HC 3.1 does with scene HD TV show MKVs (720p with H264/AC3).
Thanks.

Bugs in stock 2.3.3

Your camera does not work in Portrait mode?
Or you mean the menu does not rotate?
In my X10, camera DOES work in Portrait mode...
Even Upside down, it will work...
But the menu stay in Landscape mode only...
Why not just say the menu does not rotate...
Instead of saying camera does not work?
Is your camera stop taking picture in Portrait mode?
It might be a feature and not a bug...
bugs for me:
- unable to open any https webpage in any of the browsers (dolphin,stock,opera...)
- when going to m.facebook.com and clicking any external link it does not work, tried all the browsers
These 2 features used to work perfectly on 2.1
Yes, you are right. The menu of the camera is not rotating from landscape to potrait. for me it feels like a bug.

Ok, the camera menu seems like a bug.
continuing in that thread then. Thanks
I personally think this is a better thread with the bugs in the first post. I'll read the other One though. Not all issues in the other thread are bugs...
- ugly looking UI & apps,
- one way camera UI,
- music app much behind from Mediascape (o.k., equalizer, but the rest is crap)
- calendar like from stone age, useless
- not any connection between UI of stock apps, like they were doing a car from different company spare parts
- ...
I'm still on 2.1.B.0.1, rooted and JIT.
Regards, Zagor
Im closing this cause there is already a 2.3.3 issues thread

Changes I noticed on 4.1.2 XXDLL4

These are some changes I noticed on the new 4.1.2 XXDLL4 ROM released for India.
1- Better browser performance. Now I see the browser like a 'real' desktop. I always had flash player installed but there were annoying white empty spaces in some websites, but now there is no more.
- Browsermark results (mobile view)
(Desktop view)
2- There is a three dot icon while calling. Don't know what it does or it's meaning!
3- Obviously the most flashy feature is the introduction of ink effects!
Different colour options are available, if you like
4- You can edit notification panel now, add or delete as per your wish. You can now permanently disable the Mutliwindow too. So holding the back button won't enable it anymore.
5- AnTuTu benchmark, if anyone is interested.
6- The number format in SMS is weird! It splits the number! Bad.
7- Sorry I don't find the continuous input prediction to be better, nor Swyping.
8- There is a cursor control option in keyboard settings, however you won't be able to use it with Continuous input!
9- And I hate the new 'slim' clock font introduced. Loved the previous bold look WAY better!
10- And I think the S Note application is faster than before now. It'd take 3/4 seconds to create a new note before, and it seems faster now, say 30%? Or am I wrong?
11- When the font size was selected as Normal the cursor was not seen in some applications like Tapatalk and others, but now it is fixed
So if you guys are noticing anything else kindly share here.
I think that the spaces between numbers are good? Easy to read.
Mine is BTU, nothing yet on Kies

One thing I noticed, a VERY welcomed addition i might add, is the Gallery "ACTUALLY ASKED ME!" If I wanted my Facebook photos to appear or not! Thank god for that haha.
Is there any Lag?
Zooming in gallery was laggy in poland 4.1.2
is it the Same Here ?
Here's my list
1. Camera feature: Hold Volume to focus, release to take photo
2. Video feature: Press Volume to start recording, press again to toggle flash.
3. 480p Flash Video Works (if you have latest Flash Player 11.1.115.34 Installed)
4. New Samsung Keyboard Feature: Cursor Control, Continuous Input (If you didn't already have it)
5. Customized Notification Toggle Icons
6. New Notification Toggles: AllShare Cast, Smart Stay, S Bean, Driving Mode, Blocking Mode
7. Brightness slider can now be disabled, but who would do this?
8. Stock web browser rendering improvements, seems to load pages faster, but I can't say for sure.
9. Ink Effect with S Pen on Swipe lockscreen, and customizable ink colors.
10. Gallery in normal list mode is now 3d rendered. When you flick it fast, the photos tilt.
11. Brightness control notification disappears at 5% battery. Don't like!
12. New save option for HDR shooting mode for camera. Save HDR only.
13. Write notes to front of the picture with polaroid type frame...
14. Video Player app's alphabetization is fixed.
15. Screen capture icon for Video Player app is changed.
16. Multi Window with Video Player adds sharpening to entire screen.
17. Bug fixed when full screening Video Player from multi window (no more notification bar).
18. S Planner has new post-it option.
19. Groupcast
20. Vibration and pop noises when Email is hovered with S Pen in Email app.
21. Handwriting recognition bug fix where it used to only first take in a few strokes interpret only the first few letters, then resume, but it would mess you up in the process. No longer an issue.
22. Click on the picture of your contact, in Contacts app, and it is integrated with services such as facebook, skype, maps, etc.
23. Set music in slideshow in gallery? Was that there in 4.1.1?
24. The slideshow music plays when you choose "Play continuous shot" in Gallery with photos taken in continuous shot mode.
25. In landscape mode in Gallery, the last shared option icon is present next to standard share icon in gallery. This may have been there in 4.1.1. Just seeing it for the first time because I probably don't share photos often.

Good things that were removed in Sense 5.5

Ok, so I got my 4.3 and Sense 5.5 update and, altough there a re a lot of improvements, I'm more pissed off because of some stuff they removed or... ahem... added...
- Why did they remove the lock screens? I know the lock screen widgets are accessible through a right to left swipe in the lock screen, but why remove them altogether? For example, I just want to be able to have a different wallpaper for my lock screen than my home screen...
- Why did they remove the old video highlights themes?I very much welcome the added new settings and permissions for the highlights... Honestly, they're a very big deal. But, for the love of God, why remove the old themes? My favorite (and judging from what I've seen on the internet - youtube, Facebook or HTC Share - "Islandia" is gone... Why?
- Why is the NFC logo pinned in the status bar? Why do I have to see that? I have NFC turned on all the time... :
These are the few things that got me upset about the new Sense 5.5 update. I know that the update has a lot of good new features (and I welcome them all)... But why remove other good features that have been on Sense since I can remember?
Are there other features that have been removed/altered in a bad way?
Please share...
And an UPDATE: I know that they've added a s*it load of new emoticons in the stock SMS app, BUT they made it so that the we cannot see the old ones.
For example, when someone sends me an SMS with an emoticon from HTC One X with Sense 5.0, I just see it as text and they cannot see the new emoticons that I send them... Great thinking HTC (_|_)
Yes. Why the he'll did they removed the medialink hd api?
No more movies on the tv and browsing on the phone at the same time. Really makes the hd medialink useless.
I wonder how long HTC will take to actually understand how things work.
They removed all weather animations in sense 5. And what they provided in that version is now removed in the latest version.
Are they confused?

Can't get my head around removing the old themes. I suppose now that there's custom music available you can use the old music easily enough I would imagine but you can't get the old visual effects back. I love Islandia.
Ridiculous decision, I only went to 4.2.2 and got the six new themes in July, three months and they've removed them?!

Custom music is cool but try to upload your video and have all these warning about copyrighted music etc.
The new themes aren't good or aren't there any themes anymore?
Also, did I read that now the duration of the clip is changeable or am I wrong?
The duration of the clip is variabile, but cannot exceed 30 seconds. Maybe on HTC One Max you can make videos longer than 30 seconds.

That's because the old emoticons were just three-character strings that the messaging app interpreted as a smiley. For example (-: turned into . This caused tons of problems if you were trying to send a more technical text message with tons of parentheses and colons. Now, in Sense 5.5, the emoticons are standard Unicode emoji glyphs that are supposed to be universally compatible with every phone supporting the updated unicode standard. For example, in Android 4.3 (and probably 4.2.2) emojis are partially-implemented. The latest iPhones have a full implementation, as does Google Hangouts (one of the reasons to be excited about Hangouts SMS integration IMO), and now Sense 5.5 has a full implementation of emojis.
The reason your old phone cannot see your new emoticons is because it's either not running a recent enough version of Android or HTC's software on the One X simply does not render the emojis right. Some messaging apps also can strip excess unicode information -- older phones are notorious for this. A simple fix would be to use an alternative SMS/MMS app on the One X, one that fully supports emoji input such as Sliding Messaging Pro, or Textra (don't know if Textra supports ALL of the emoji glyphs, but it has some functionality).
One more note, CM10.x's MMS app also has support for this built-in, so it isn't just some fad that little girls and iPhone users are aware of, it is legitimately an evolving communication standard.

You are right, I was choosing a song that had 26 seconds in my tests and I wasn't paying attention that I cut that song a few months ago to use it as a ringtone. Now I have chosen a song that was 4 minutes and didn't encounter any restrictions.

I don't like new Gallery and Music apps. Before update i can change track with swiping albumcover left or right. With this update i can not.
Did you notice that the zoom bar disappeared from the camera interface?

Problem with On Demand TV apps
I have a real niggle at the moment where I cannot use the BBC iPlayer, the ITV Player or the 4OD apps. The apps work and provide the ability to select programmes to watch but each fails to play video and audio (sometimes e.g. iPlayer there is broken/distorted audio).
I have noted that there are a few similar reports on maclaw.pl from other rom users.
In earlier versions of the ROM these apps did work, but I cannot recall which. I am currently using 11-20140318-UNOFFICIAL-golden.
I used to get lots of reboots but after installing this ROM and doing a factory reset these have stopped. This version for me is incredibly stable and works well except for this issue.
Can this be resolved?

gaming app bugs
I've downloaded two apps on my s3 mini and there are bugs that i never experienced with stock rom
the new app flappy bird makes a distorted sound when the bird in the app falls and some of the letters in the app jus come up as small black boxes.
i was getting the same problem with a game called car parking the letters bearly show up and the sound is distorted when i navigate through the menus.
i have no idea whether its a problem with the rom or if its the apps that bug out itself
ANY SOLUTIONS???
just some minor bugs that doesnt effect daily use.
i have
*sound adjustment and discrepancy
*whatsapp loads late or doesnt load at all
apollo looks weird with scrollbar
didnt Experience clock freeze.

Maybe the problem with audio driver ..
Just a suggestion try to backup your rom then un install dspmanager and flash acid audio engine with clear audio + addon and see if it is solved .. if not just restore your rom again .... ( just for trying)
I was using it with my wonder and now use it with s3 mini and work good
Yeah thanks for that never thought of that will try that later ....... BTW jus asking what's the latest version of the rom? Is there an update for it?
