My friends Mytouch 4g crashed today. It will only boot into bootloader and Fastboot, which I thought was fine, but the hardware buttons aren't working so I can't navigate to factory reset or anything. The phone is stock, s-on, not rooted, and they have never had problems with the hardware buttons before. Is this thing able to be saved? Thanks in advance!

The only buttons that work in the bootloader are volume and power. Use the volume buttons to scroll and the power button to select.

Are you saying ALL the hardware buttons? Or just the five at the bottom.. try what teejay said about using the volume buttons. If you can get into boot loader, then the volume buttons should work.
Sent from my HTC Glacier Sense 3.5 using xda premium
Both volume buttons and the power button do not work. Can the other buttons also be used to navigate in the bootloader?
Sent from my Incredible 2 using Tapatalk
Just saw what teejay said, so if the power button and volume buttons are the only way to navigate in bootloader, I'd need to push an RUU via ADB, correct? Will I be able to do that without the volume and power buttons working?

Stock non rooted son.... Call Tmobile.
Its weird how you can get to bootloader but can't navigate with volume and power which are the same buttons to boot into bootloader.

Thats what I was thinking lol. I told my friend to just call t mobile and get it taken care of. I'm still curious how you could go about fixing this sort of issue tho.

+1 on that...
i was wondering that as well lol
Maybe he did adb reboot bootloader or just reboot bootloader in terminal emulator?
EDIT: I just tried in TE and SU is required to use reboot bootloader command. Hmm. I got the impression this thing wasn't rooted. Is it?
EDIT: I'm a douche. It crapped out and only boots to bootloader. I should read harder. Warranty?

I think one of the HW buttons (most probably VolDown or trackball) got stuck on. If I remember correctly, in this case the rest of the buttons won't cause any reaction.

I did notice that just holding the power button takes me straight to fast boot, whereas volume down + power goes to bootloader like normal. What button combo is needed to go straight to fastboot?
Sent from my Incredible 2 using Tapatalk
Power+trackpad, I believe...
Ok, phone is no longer under warranty, so Im going to try to get the phone going again if possible. I'm guessing my only real option is adb, but how am I to select apply update once I push the ruu?
Sent from my Incredible 2 using Tapatalk
ADB won't help you. If you have a physical problem that won't allow you past bootloader - you'll have the phone booting to bootloader whatever you do, and while you'll probably be able to force boot by using "fastboot boot your_local_kernel_image" command (if you're S-OFF and on engineering bootloader), some ROMs might not boot or not work properly with a stuck trackpad.
If the problem is physical - you'll need to disassemble the phone and fix it physically.
Phone is s-on and using the stock bootloader, not an eng bootloader. Is there an adb command to force a factory reset? Or is it possible to gain s-off and root with the phone like this and then try and force boot with that command?

I'm just brainstorming, trying to figure something out. When I get off work tonight I'm going to mess with it, maybe hop in an irc channel for help.. gonna at least try to fix it

I bought a mytouch 4g off CL 6 months ago. From the description it sounded like they tried to root and got stuck on fastboot. I bought it thinking I would flash it and all would be ok. Well, it had the EXACT same issue as you are describing. After a few weeks of playing with it, I sent it in to HTC for their $35 repair. They sent it back in working condition and did not charge me since it was still under warranty.
So, I conclude from that HTC would charge the $35 for non-warranty repair of the same issue.
That is probably the only route you can take that involves making that phone functional. However, I am no mt4g root expert.

I'm just trying to enter recovery console. I have tryed EVERY button combination & used a computer to just did use SDK. Any help would be GREAT ! Thank you
Just to make sure: you need to release the button at the right time.
Turn off your phone and take out the battery for 5 sec then put the battery back. Then hold power+vol up + vol down together and once you see the Vibrant logo, release the power button immediately WHILE pressing vol up+vol down.
That didn't work tryed 3 times.

Have you tried via adb:
adb reboot recovery
I had difficulty getting to recovery when I reflashed the stock ROM via ODIN. But once it was rooted and I got Clockwork Recovery back on there, I haven't had an issue via the button combination t get into recovery.
I will try that thx for the info.

I was on the same boat as you. I just gave up and did the one-click root process. It wasn't exactly one-click, but it was simple enough. Now I've got the Clockwork ROM manager, which will let you boot into its recovery through the application itself.
I downloaded the one click lag fix app that roots your phone & fix the lag but I just can't get into recovery mode.

What date code is on your vibrant box? I am on my second phone both built in august and the buttons do not work on either. I had to root via adb recovery. The earlier built phones are rumored to be fine. Dosent seem to matter when you got the phone more when it was made.
My first Vibrant got into recovery no problem, I received a replacement phone which would not get into recovery using the hardware buttons. I called T-Mobile and told them of the problem and they sent me out a new phone. This last one boots into recovery first try. I know there is a common problem with some Vibrants out there not booting into recovery, thankfully T-Mobile will exchange if it won't.
Let me check when I get back home. Is this a t-mobile acknowledged issue with vibrants now?

When mine gets finicky, I just plug it to my Windows machine, Enable USB Debugging, open the command prompt, and type "adb reboot recovery" without quotes. Works every time. You can also use "adb reboot download" to get into download mode.

For what it's worth, this helped me.
Hold volume up, volume down, and power all together, wait for Vibrant to come for the second time, then let go of the power button but not the menu button. After another second, I let go of the volume buttons and instantly went into recovery.
Good luck.
I tried terminal and it said it was not permitted

Someone on the I9000 boards posted that recovery can also be invoked by heat! He used an oven, but suggested a hair dryer to be safe.

I agree with this one. My Vibrant has a date of 8/14/10, and for the life of me it will not button into recovery. I really have read every thread on the topic here as well as other android forums, and tried every combination (over and over).
Rooting was a no brainer with one touch, and with that, I can get to recovery easily. The problem I see, is in the event of a miss step somewhere down the line.
I can't tell you the relief that I felt doing a battery pull to button recovery with my G1(many times). When you are in a bootloop or the like, and nothing else will work, you just need that capability.
Sadly, my Vibrant will be going back because of this. I don't understand why they would hobble the devise this way. I'm sure they will get many more phones returned because of it.
You need to type su first.
From terminal:
su

Worked for me too! Thanks man!
For anyone else looking for a solution to this problem where the battery replacement doesn't work, such as a busted volume down button or something...
IF you can get the phone started at all, you can use the ADB shell to reboot into recovery.
Now you might have other issues after that if you can't use certain buttons to navigate the bootloader menu. But if for example you just want to return the device to stock for a warranty exchange and you have a bad volume down button, you can reboot into recovery using ADB then you should only need your volume UP button to initiate the flashing of the PD15IMG file.
So there's limited usage for this technique, but it'll work wonders when you need it.
I'm not sure what happened to my friends phone but apparently it just resetted out of no where and is stuck in fastboot i think i forget which one... The one with less option.
the keys don't work.i can't click on any options with power nor move with arrow keys.
I thought I'll just load up the pd15img and it'll be good. But nope screen is stuck at fastboot without any changes.
It is s-off but 86 bootloader idk why it's not 85 but whatever.
I think it might be bricked. I'm going to see if adb detects it later tonight. If it can are there any ways to fix it?

Code:

Oh wow, noticed that my reply didn't go through.
anyways quick update. Fixed it. it wasn't the volume button. volume button would lead to hboot i think. this went straight to fastboot. I imagine it has something to do with his back button (was working, stopped working when this happened, i fixed it somehow idk)
but anyways for future reference if you get stuck at fastboot and you can't move it
Click HOME, this enables your keys
go to recovery and flash a rom.
oh i wanted to add, for some reason, his phone was like wiped clean. no os or rom. so i had to flash him a new one.

This can be caused by a stuck VolumeDown button, and in this case the Home button won't help.
Hi,
I got the same problem with my HTC Desire Z, when I turn it on, it run on fastboot and no keys respond so I'm unable to boot the phone.
If I turn it on with Vol down button hold, the phone boot on the Hboot screen and the keys don't work on this screen too...
Unfortunately, this happen yesterday night... and since this yesterday morning, the home button of my device broke down... It sounds like I'm f**ked...
Is there a way to pass througt fastboot by using the adb ? (I'm not sure my device will be recognized byt adb on fastboot mode...)
Thanks

I've used the search function by looking for no keys responding on fastboot screen and that bring me here, in this case, nevermind the device, problem is the same.
It should be a stuck button, but I can access to fastboot or hboot depending on pressing the Vol Down button or not. Maybe the problem come from the not working center button of the Desire Z, I'll try it.

Once I turn off my device and try to start it again, it goes inmediatly to the fastboot mode.
I have to connect it to the computer and use the adb command (fastboot reboot) to make it start.

I guess you don't need to boot into recovery to root, you simply need to boot into bootloader
If there's the "no command" message, press power and volume up (or down?) to bypass that

Motochopper exploit has been out and about for a while, although your mileage may vary. KhoC, it's generally better practice to go through fastboot first. Reboot by holding power and both volume buttons (up and down). You should get to a black screen with an android in the center, and a tab at the top that will say things like Reboot bootloader, Recovery, Power Off, and other such things. Scroll with the volume buttons, select with power.

Care to tell us what combinations you've tried? Saying that none of them work is generally unhelpful, since it's possible you're just forgetting one/slightly malforming the correct sequence.

Yea sorry. I've tried power + volume up, power + volume down & power + both volume up/down at both powering it it on and while the device is actually on. while the device is on, if I press power + volume up, all it does is dim/brighten the screen. power + volume down does nothing. When I'm pressing the buttons, I'm holding them down, which will eventually reboot the device. I get the Google logo and the unlocked padlock, then the android laying down with no command below it.
Edit: I started my own thread this morning about it titled "Need help recovering my Nexus 7" a few posts down so not to hijack this one that has a little more info as well.
