Tips on creating more space without rooting - Xperia Play General

Im getting constant messages now saying I dont have enough space. I've moved everything I can to sd and cleared the cache. Programs like groupon are big but wont let me though, grrr.
Noticed email takes up a lot too, anyway of limiting what is stored?

Deinstall some apps...

Thats not a tip its common sense... What if u didn't want to get rid of the apps... *rolls eyes

Then root. It's not like you need a Computing PhD for that.

Sorry chris,
The only way to make apps that don't want to be on the SD play nice, is root. And, the only way to remove apps you don't use that are sitting in /system...is root.

Well actually no root required using adb you can set install location from 0 which is system auto to 2 which allows all downloaded apps to be moved to sd card

That's good for apps installed after that command. System apps and previously installed apps are untouched, and they're the largest issue.

Can u not save all emails to sd or limit how much is stored
Sent from my R800i using XDA App

Just root your phone. Whatever reason you have for not doing so yet is based on misinformation. Download superoneclick and go to it.

How much internal storage do you have left.

Market apps not installing

I had two updatede apps today. They downloaded fine but won't install. Don't know if it's a Market issue or something with my device. Any ideas?
Sent from my rooted DROID2 using XDA App
Ok. New apps will download and install but still have the issue with updating apps.
Sent from my rooted DROID2 using XDA App
Usually an uninstall and then reinstall fixes apps that don't update.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
Tried that. Also cleared Market cache and data. Done several reboots.

Read in another thread that it could be an issue with Google servers. Has anyone heard anything?

It is a google problem, the same thing is happening on the hero Just wait for them to fix is probably the only thing we can do right now
Same thing has been happening to me. I have just been clicking the update and then immediately clicking on the name of the app I just downloaded and watching the download and install meter and it works for me everytime.

The issue was with apps on the memory card. Had to move them to phone memory, update, then move them back to the card. Annoying.

Moving apps back and forth isn't working today for updates.

Could Google have made changes to the Market ahead of Gingerbread?

Possible, maybe why they're having market issues
Not sure it's the Market now. Since I couldn't get Angry Birds to updated I tried getting it at GetJar. That wouldn't install either.
Sent from my rooted DROID2 using XDA App
Ok. Completely lost. ROM Manager successfully updated but Angry Birds still won't.
Sent from my rooted DROID2 using XDA App
I'm having almost the same issues. It started yesterday when I accidentally unistalled the wrong app. When I went on to market to re-download it and found it sat in the ongoing downloads going nowhere along with several others. I cancelled them and started them again one by one. They all downloaded and then failed to install. After that they all appeared in the downloads list but say "FREE" next to them instead of "Installed".
I know that, apart form the first app, all of them are definitely installed. Rebooting the phone made no difference. I also removed the memory card to see if that helped. At that point I managed to install the first app.
I put the SD card back in and the problem returned. Most of the apps I have installed on the SD card only appear in my downloads list intermitently, and I still can't install or update anything from the market with the SD card in the phone. I also am having issues re-installing backups and non-market apk's.
Have I done anything to the phone to make it do this or is this a Google issue? I'm using a rooted T-Mobile UK desire on stock 2.2 with ModInstallLocation set to external.
Thanks for any help or advice.
I also get Free instead of Installed.

And now new apps won't install.

Ok. Was able to update apps and install one new app. Still can't get other apps to install. At this point I'm open to crazy possibilities.

It's still the server issues, until Anroid 2.3 is out this will probably be a problem
I hope I don't have to wait for 2.3 given how long it takes Verizon to release an update.

[Q] Rooting with Gingerbreak

I've read that rooting with Gingerbreak works with the latest update, but also might erase the internal storage. Exactly what part of the internal storage might be erased? EVERYTHING, or just installed apps, ringtones, music, etc...?
Anything on internal storage, if u click on app files and go to internal storage anything there, so if u don't put apps on sd ur fine but some of its files it saves will be gone
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
So... basically my best bet would be to make a copy of everything i can onto my computer before attempting the root?
Yes
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
And..... another question. Is a microSD card actually required for it, or no?
I never remove my sd so I am not sure
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
Yes an external SD card is required. You will be prompted to have one when you first install gingerbreak. I had to go out and buy one.
just copy su file in /osh/bin with some name. your root will be preserved.
Not gonna lie sam, what you said means absolutly nothing to me. Care to elaborate a little more for the special needs section of the class?

[Q] after rooted and remove all useless app how much rom do we have?

Hi guys I'm new here I just wondering after our Arc get rooted and remove all useless stock apps how much internal memory left? Will it be more than 400MB? Lol
No
Sent via noahs ark
I removed pretty much all the xda and I have 179 mb left so no
Sent from my LT15i using XDA Premium App
On a fresh reflash, and removing everything that's removable gives you about 230mb free before you can start installing your own apps.
Check out my post here.
Oh...that is bad. My phone left 30MB it keeps telling me that l have low memory. Any idea how to move all apps to SD? I can only move some.

[Q] out of space?

My wife just got an M as a replacement for her old Rezound. She has had it for about three weeks and the phone is already telling her she is out of internal storage. However, when I look at her storage it appears that only her "Backup ASSISTANCE Plus" is full. It's unfortunately causing her phone to be worthless. Does anyone know how to fix this? Her phone is completely stock. Thanks in advance.

couple of tips:
1.) don't use backup assistance - use google to store your contacts
2.) make sure that your camera settings are set to save pics/vids to the mnt/external1 folder (no sdcard in internal storage)

Might also want to disable Backup Assistant in the Application Settings.
Also, clear the cache and make sure that no leftover OTA updates are stored.

Thanks for the feedback. I tried to disable it but it wouldn't let me. I'll take another look tonight. I don't want to do a hard reset unless I have to but if I can't disable it, I'll have no other choice.

Conclusion. This phone sucks if you can't put apps on the SD. 8gb internal hard drive is really only 4 gigs.

If you root, you can easily store apps on external. Also, internal is partitioned into 4gb halves. One for the the ROM and the other for media/etc. Personally, I don't understand how people fill that up so quickly. I use very few apps and all my media gets stored to my external SD. I'm still sitting at about 3.5GB available on my storage side.

I understand it's portioned but I've never seen a phone require half of its internal storage. As for media, it's all going to her card. I guess if you use few apps your ok, but that's not the case with a 5 year. You shouldn't have to root for a phone to be functional with a relatively low amount of apps in use.

Do you know if the phone was previously rooted? I know that nandroid backups get saved to internal storage if you don't specify and they will eat up the storage space quickly.

It came straight from Verizon as a replacement phone so all I know is that it's a refurbished phone. I cleaned up the backup assistance so hopefully that will help. I have a theory that triggered the warning and loss of functionality. We'll see. If it pops back up, it's going back to Verizon.

Makes sense since this phone is loaded with it. This is our first Motorola smartphone. Is that a Motorola issue with excess bloat? I know all phones have it but this seems like a lot considering the limited amount of internal memory.

bloat is an issue with all Verizon android phones (the bloat helps bring down the costs on the device).
one of the drawbacks to this device is the lack of internal memory. however, the bigger drawback is in the OS that prevents folks from moving apps to their SD Card.
but once I rooted, and installed a "clean ROM", I got a lot more space.
with your wife's phone, I suspect she has the latest OTA baseband (check the phone settings, if the baseband is prior to May 2013, then you are in luck - DO NOT ACCEPT the UPDATE). if the baseband reads May 2013, then your only option is to gain root access and freeze/delete the bloatware.
if space is an issue, I highly recommend to go this route. otherwise, start trimming some of the apps she never uses.

Samsung Kies if your on windows/os x

does kies include saving app data like saving game progress, for example you reach level 10 of a certain game with 100 credits, etc . kies is cumbersome for transferring text messages.. not sure if it will work with whatsapp messages too.
i am asking this because soon i will upgrade too to the note 3 and I dont root also. how about the titanium/helium i keep hearing about? thanks, thanks
I tried helium but it kept asking to connect to computer I thought I could just save to sd card

Good Luck with the backup. I found whilst moving from IOS to Android that the backup for non rooted devices leaves a lot to be desired. This is one area Sammy needs to get sorted out properly. I mean can they not emulate / copy itunes or somethng? lol
itunes saves app data? sorry im clueless about apple-related stuff lol.
some of the games i play can be stored in google cloud but i am not sure if it will work properly on a new phone.
craigel, from what i understand, for sd cards you can store pics, files, etc, as well as apps, just not the complete app data if i am not mistaken
Don't rely on kies. It's garbage.
Try Mybackup
