[SOLVED] fix market:// links to use Android market. - Kindle Fire General

Currently, on my rooted KF (not CM7), all market:// links seem to be directed toward the amazon appstore. so many links to addons within apps do not work because of it. I've already tried going into Applications and checking for 'defaults' that I could clear, but nothing is set as a default. So how might one force market:// links to use the Android market?
EDIT: Solved! See post #4

Looks like I was wrong. Glad you found help though.

actually im using AdAway so my hosts file is already completely changed. im thinking it must be a forced default. gotta be a way to change it tho... :\

Metamorph

I am running a rooted Eris flashed with Lightning Bolt Eris version 2.8 (ELB 2.8), I downloaded and installed busybox successfully, but when I try to use Metamorph it force closes on me. I also used CacheClear and ATK to wipe out all running apps and cache on the device, and rebooted phone attempting to use MetaMorph and it force closes on both the "Pick Existing Theme" button and "Unzip/Extract New Themes" button. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Metamorph several times now with no luck Any assistance?
same thing happens for me too....
and what sucks is i think i read that noone can get any of the devs to respond about it...
lol I garauntee 50 people come in here and yell at you for that comment against the devs.

Well not that I am a dev, but metamorph was recently updated, tried it on my wifes phone got same FC issue. Try to find version 1.9.8.6 I am using this with no problems....and be nice to the devs.
FYI this thread belongs in the App and themes section.

Okay, so if I can find the older metamorph version it should work fine? I appreciate the info and will give it a look-see. Sorry bout posting in wrong thread, I'm relatively new to this forum. If the devs of the app could still kindly look into the one that is available in the market....it would be much appreciated as well. Thanks much!

found old version
i found an old version, search "metamorph apk". it should be the second link down. its in the hero forum. i'd link it, but i'm new here...and i can't put links yet in my posts....
i just installed it on aloysius 2.0 v12 and applied a theme, works great.
hope this helps, just make sure you allow nonmarket apps to install...but i'm sure you knew that.

odd....cause i have es file explorer and andexplorer on mine and it works. try uninstalling andexplorer, run metamorph and let it not find it, then install andexplorer and run metamorph again.
or remove both astro and andexplorer. run metamorph, install andexplorer, run metamorph again, then install astro.
or uninstall all three and reinstall one at a time, with metamorph, then andexplorer, then astro?
it shouldn't have anything to do with astro, but i don't use it and thats the only difference between yours and my set up.

After a little bit more experimentation, I was able to solve this dilemma. Turns out Apps2SD was the culprit. MM would only work if Andexplorer was saved on the internal storage of the eris, rather than the SD card. Once I moved to internal storage, MM works fine now ^_^. Thanks again for the assistance

sure! no problem. i don't use app2sd right now, so i didn't even think of that. by the way, the version that i found only supports .thm files. i just found this out...i tried to apply a theme using the .xml file and it wanted a .thm file. oddly, i got the free version in the market to work, cross my fingers it stays that way. if any of the mm themes you want to apply only have .xml files, try uninstalling the old metamorph and then installing the one in the market. if the new version works, great..and you can use any of the new/old themes that have xml's. if not, you're stuck with any old theme that uses .thm.
reading some of the comments on the market...it seems like a hit and miss. some fc, some don't...
found a solution!!!
if you need to get a good busybox download Titanium Backup...
and then what i'm assuming i did to get the newest Metamorph working was... install the old Metamorph.apk from the Hero forum and then install the new Metamorph from the market... you can delete the old one once you have the new one installed
i flashed a new lockscreen with it... everything worked great!

yea, i guess the old metamorph install leaves behind some framework for the new install to use. i guess we'll have to see if this method works for more people, as it so far only worked for you and i. users will need to use the new version in the market, since it can handle xml and the old one in the hero forum is only thm. lots of themes now are xml i think...

As in Market version 2.2.6? Try finding com.amarket.apk. You want the latest market, version 3.3.11. It's linked to in a few places. Check the dev fourm. I just pointed someone else to thread with something like "Android Market..WTF" that had it posted.

Hm, the last thing I can think of is your permissions. Make sure they are set
rw-
r--
r--
after copying the .apk to /system/app and prior to installing it (ditto on the googleservicesframework.apk). After that, I'm sorry to say I can't be of much further help.
Make sure you clear cache and Data as well on the app. Makes a difference.
forgive the noob question, but once the apk's are copied to the system/app directory, do they keep the same file name? i've copied over both the market app and the google services app and now do not see them listed in the app folder.
thank you for your patience.
hold on; i am making some progress...
please do not reply in the off chance i can figure this out and learn my way through.
thank you again for being patient.
i've gotten the apk's copied over, but under permissions there's also an execute column. do i uncheck those variables to get the

you mention?

is that how you would manually install all apk's? meaning would you copy and paste them into the system/app directory and then change their permissions identically?

No, only if you're trying to make them a system app. Technically, you don't have to install them at all once they're in /system/app. At boot the system will allow anything in that folder to run.
The reason it's a good idea to install the google related stuff is because it will then add them to /data/app (I beleive). Allowing you to keep functionality after OTA system updates. With the newst version 6.2 I did not have to re-install any of my google apps, including the Market, and have yet to run into any issues.
Normally, you would just need to click on an .apk to install it (doesn't matter where it's at). The trick is to get them onto your KF someway (USB, dropbox, email) in order to sideload them.
i've been using usb to get apk's onto my fire. i was then just clicking them in the folder i had placed them in to install them. i've only installed a few, but adroid market was one that definitely never worked after install. right now i've got it copied over per your instructions but cannot verify it works as i cannot get it to log into my goggle account...not sure why. amazon connection works fine.
thank you again for your help.

Assuming you used the latest TouchNooter, Super Manager should work. I think SM is new from the version of TN that I last used.
Or, once Market is working, download your favorite.

That seems to be a problem some people have and others don't. What version of the B&N firmware are you running?

This may be related to the B&N firmware version you're running. Apparently, the NST v1.1.0 has known problems with some 802.11n networks, WPA2 settings and various other random wifi issues. I don't believe TN touches wifi, so it shouldn't have changed.
would you say go ahead, if i say i'm gonna restore the factory settings with the backup and root again?
and yes, i rooted with the latest touchnooter (the link u posted)

[Q] Buying apps from Android Marketplace

I've checked as well as I could in KF forum and haven't run across this problem. When I try to download select apps Google Play it tells me they aren't compaible with my device. One was Draw something and I could use an .apk I got from 4shared before they updated it so I know it works. Is there a known solution to this. I've read about changing a file in \system but as far as I can tell that dir doesn't exist. I would think KF would have to have that, I just can't get to it.
Also what exactly does the Replace Framework-res in the KFU do? Does in just replace everything if you screw it up?
I remember when I had my nook color I was able to change some txt file to make the nook appear as a another device allowing more access to apps I didn't have before. I believe Paul O'Briens rom currently does that. Not sure how its being down now but you might find something there.
Sent from my Amazon Kindle Fire using xda premium
Yeah I figured out the whole \system business and feel retarded from that. Ill try editing tomorrow and if that's too much ill just check out that mod. Thanks for the help.

Cannot install apps on rooted NSTG

iOS have rooted my NSTG using glownooter and all went well in that it boots and everything is there as expected. Unfortunately I can see no way of getting apps on it. I have tried the following
-installing using browser, it crashes
-Opera mini does not work
- installing new browser, none available in market (I'm sure I've found dolphin there previously. )
-Amazon AppStore, does not work
-gmail attached app, cannot download
-email app, crashes
-google drive, box, Dropbox links in gmail, launches browser which crashes
-super manager crashes
I would really appreciate any help, all I really want is the kindle app working as the nook store is no more.
Thanks in hope

OK, well, you've tried just about everything that can't/won't work
How about something that will? Copy the apps onto your SD card and locate them with a file manager (nice older version of ES File Explorer attached below). Tap the apk file and it should install. You can do this with the Kindle app as well. Unless you've got GApps working and can access the Market via the SearchMarket app, side-loading like this is your only recourse (well, almost....there's also ADB).

So there is a bigger issue. I'm not familiar with glownooter but I did look it up. Whether you used that exact same version or not, it sounds like you have the makings of Market access, not to mention abdwireless. If you can get the Market up and running then you can download any old file manager that will install just to get going, or you can get apps directly from the PlayStore (though the pickings are somewhat limited for Android 2.1
So what's the real issue? Have you tried the GApps sign-in procedure? Did it not work? The glownooter package is supposed to include Market and then you get SearchMarket from the PlayStore once you're signed in. From there, the rest is easy.
If you don't have any apps on your NTG like Market, or YouTube, or GMail, then something is not right about your rooting process.

Good! Yes, the PlayStore dance takes time for whatever reason.
If by "Amazon" you mean Kindle, then you will need to update your certificates in order to interface with the books you have stored with Amazon. See here for more info.

Hi, I'm a very new user here. How do I rename this like you suggest? I've tried doing it through the adb shell (via ADB Konnect utility) and it complained about being read-only (yes, I am root and even su'ed to be sure)
# mv Browser.apk Browser.apk.bak
failed on 'Browser.apk' - Read-only file system
Then, I installed ES File Explorer (v3.1.0.1) and tried doing it through that interface, where it complained simply "Task failed". Then, I thought "wait...I should make sure I have root permissions given to this app", found the setting, got root, tried again and got a message indicating success! Except...the file didn't actually get renamed.
I'm out of ideas and time for now. Help is greatly appreciated!

I have not used adb to rename, but I have used both Root Browser and ES File Explorer to rename apk files (never know when you might want it back....) without any problem. It should not be necessary to change the permissions on the system/app or data/app folders--or the apk files themselves. The file explorers do require root access, but it sounds like you have that covered.
I am a little distrustful of the newer ES File Explorers, as they are mucho bloated and troublesome to use on the NST/NTG sometimes. Maybe try the one attached to this post? It's what I finally settled on (but you have to go to SearchMarket first and mark ES FE as "do not autoupdate" or the older version will just be wiped out).

Thanks. Yeah, I tried that one out earlier, but I couldn't see right away how to browse around in / like I could easily do in a 3.* version of ES FE which I had tried out first. Will play around with it more now...GOT IT!
I'm also intent on disabling the Amazon Appstore now, but I can't figure out which apk(s) to rename. Should I just do a regular uninstall then?
While at it, I disabled some of the apps recommended here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1933615) because I saw how damn much the phone utilities were killing my battery life!!
So I can't find the thread where I found this earlier, but here are a ton of older versions of that apk if anyone things that's useful: http[://]es-file-explorer.en.uptodown[dot]com/android/old (sorry, about the [dot] stuff, as a new user I can't post external URLs yet).

It's something like com.venezia...blah-blah...near the end of the app list in data/apps. Just uninstall it. When it was still working back in the old days it was always giving me trouble with nags of one sort or another. It's just one piece and useless so might as well uninstall.

You might be surprised about some of the "phone stuff" and power consumption. The mechanism for reporting battery use on the NST leaves something to be desired. See my post here. In any case, the actual phone.apk is responsible for android media volume control so if you ever pursue USB Audio, you'll need it. The telephony.apk, not needed.

Ya, that was from me There are a number of threads with packages/lists/links of older versions/working versions of apps. One of the more recent is here.

There it is...ended up being called com.android.venezia.apk. I deleted it from the ES FE interface after failing to be able to do it through adb uninstall on my computer. Still need to figure out how to get write permissions there, apparently.a

Yeah, that sounds fun! I'll get there eventually, I hope.
Thanks for all the info!
