Is there a good alternative to the CM7 software keys for the home search and back buttons?
I want to use CM7 but need a better (hopefully bigger) set of touch buttons, even something like the stock kindle fire ones.
Also What is a good app for volume control accessible from any app
Try searching for button savior in the market place. It does a fanatic job, and it hides itself until needed leaving more accessible real estate on your screen.
Give it a shot. I think there is a free version.

I just tried it... don't like it, is there anyway to pull the buttons from the stock update.zip?

Hi,
As we all aware of the frequent usage of home/back/settings buttons requirement when using android os. The issue with the hd2 being the case that these buttons are mechanical. Over the time it is certain that these buttons(especially on hd2) will become loose. I was just wondering if there is any solution for this. I remember seeing that Droidx has a built in soft button toolbar which pops up as required. If that is the case, is there a package/app available for hd2 that makes this possible? Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.
Thanks.

I'm using Smart Taskbar as an alternative. Serves me well so far. Download from Market.
The smart taskbar is great, except that i wish it also had the back button and settings button action built into it. Do you know of any apps that simulates those actions?
Thanks though,

Havn't come across any so far... you can customise and add the Settings app into the Quick Launch List. No back button alt though.
Are there any apps, hacks, tricks, whatever to disable that damn side button? Or lock it so you have to do something extra before it works? I am constantly turning my ringer off because the button is super sensitive and in just the right place to get bumped whenever using it with the keyboard out.
your best bet is to get a case
I hate cases. This thing is big enough already. I'm used to small phones, like the Pre. No way am I adding a case. There's GOT to be a better way. Even if i have to crack it open and disconnect the damn switch.
big? this isnt an evo lol even with a case this thing is still small. get your pre back lol
The full EVO is a brick, not a phone. Don't get me wrong, I'm OK with this size, but certainly don't want to add to it. I don't use cases and need my phone to fit comfortably in my pocket without creating a bulge. This is my first Android phone and so far I love ALMOST everything about it. What i don't like so far is that a simple OTA update wrecks the mods I've done and make it impossible to root...and the design of the side button. Other than that, it's been a great experience so far. Although i will say that if HTC doesn't release the kernel sometime soon and allow the devs to find a way to root, i'll be reactivating my Pre and using it until i can root the Shift.
There's an app called button re mapper if you have root, you could try it

Yea you will need root to change the functionality of the hardware buttons. If you have it, either button remapper or manually edit /system/usr/keylayout/speedy-keypad.kl - you want to change keys 114 and 115. You can either remove the wake_dropped part so the buttons don't wake the phone (this is what I did) or remove the whole line to disable the buttons entirely (using only the menu structures to adjust volume).

I have seen several posts with this question, but none with answers. Has anyone found a way to move the soft keys to one side or another? I keep hitting them when I type (did it while typing this ironically). Never did make sense to me to have a touch sensitive home button right underneath one of the most often used buttons on the typing board. In any case, I have scoured the net looking for an answer and can't find one. Any know if I missed it somewhere? Thanks in advance.
Try a tablet mod ROM, it has the navigation keys bunched up in the bottom left corner. Hope this helps.
Where?
Appreciate the info. Where do I find that one? I have seen a lot of different ROMs for N7, but nothing denoted as "tablet ROM" and none that have mentioned moving the soft keys as a feature.

You can also. Change the DPI to 160 and achieve the same effect. Tablet UI on Nexus 7

Sorry for the n00b questions, but this is my first tablet...where do I change that? I have looked though the settings and have not seen a place to do that. I am running a rooted but (almost) stock ROM. (Manually loaded 4.1.2) And will that change the rest of the viewing area?

Lazarus there is alternatives as well. Team EOS rom allows you to completely hide the softkey interface. I eventually went with gmd gesture control which allows you to hide/show the keys at the flick of your hand, as well as much, much more.
Try the lite version here

This looks like an awesome little app. But I don't see where to hide the nav bar. Is that one of the Pro features? (It is a sweet little app either way.)

This sends me back to JB 4.1.1 though doesn't it? I have already upgraded to 4.1.2 (Though at this point I could not tell you what the difference is other than home screen rotation.) I didn't know 4.1.1 well enough to know it. Only had the tablet a few days.

Might be, it definitely is available in the pro version though.

I'm really enjoying my Nexus 10 but I'm annoyed by the software buttons being in the middle of the screen, as I would like to use them with my left hand while holding the tablet.
Is there a piece of software or tweak that would allow me to move the software buttons to the left (if possible without rooting, like lightflow does with the notification led). I don't want to install a custom launcher or mod, unrooted stock is fine, just wondering if such a software exists.

On stock there is no way. The Paranoid Android Rom allows you to move the buttons.
How do I do this? I flashed to PA butbi can't find that option...

You'll have to change it to tablet mode. It should be under "Paranoid settings." I believe that is the only way to get the buttons on the left. I use the tablet UI and it works great. Much easier to hit those pesky buttons now.
Edit: It's under "Hybrid Properties"

Hi,
I was going to post this in one of the kernel threads but thought maybe it'd be interesting to more people. We've seen a few mods changing the navigation key behaviour (s2l l2h and what not). I previously suggested implementing the nexus layout into the htc using the logo as I'm a fan of having a recent apps key and I think others will like it too. However I think a better solution would be to re program the home key (or maybe the back key since home key uses google now) so that when you swipe up it opens the recent apps. I know it'd only save half a second but would make this more fluid than having to double tap. I'm not a developer but I'm just giving my idea. I thought it might be easy to do as well since it's already done with the home key swiping up to google now, so the same code can just be copied to the back key?
(
So, what do you guys think? If its easily doable I think this will be popular and could be a standard feature in most roms (or kernels?) , like the 3-dot menu removal and such.
(Also, was having a hard time answering the 'is this a question', its more of a suggestion but I could be wrong so sorry
I use the logo for recent apps on my GPe One.

How? Link? That's an ok idea though I don't like how it's not really the logo we touch it's the bottom of the screen, I always hit too high or too low.

You can configure the buttons in ViperOne. I have long press home set to open recent apps. I also use LMT launcher as a menu button, and it also has a button to jump to my last used app. Its awesome for multitasking.

It's definitely not a perfect solution, and I'm still REALLY MAD at HTC for ruining what would have been the perfect android device, but it's better than nothing.
I flash a kernel tha offers logo2menu and go into system\usr\keylayout and change the bindings and reboot. Obviously requires root.

May i know which file under /system/usr/keylayout did u edit? Is it synaptics-rmi-touchscreen.kl?
This is the content for the file
Code:
key 102 HOME
key 158 BACK
key 139 MENU VIRTUAL
I would like to change the HTC logo to multitasking, but im not sure what to change key 139 to.
Any insight on this would be helpful.
Update: figured it out!
for anyone interested in doing this, here's how you do it.
Just modify key 139 to this
Code:
key 139 APP_SWITCH WAKE_DROPPED
Hi
Is it possible to change the home swipe up config or the long press home? I have rooted and custom kernel but any way to do so by file editing?
Thanks
