About updating Nexus S to ics... - Nexus S General

So when ics ota is avaliable on my phone, I'm going to update it. But I have one serious question: do I need to factory reset my phone? I heard that I don't need to but if I don't, my phone will get very sluggish because of the old os fragmentation or something... Is this true? Do you think I should erase all my data and apps to update? (ps. I'm not rooted) I actually have mybackup pro, but does that restore apps and data of the app? Some said that it does and some said it doesn't. I want to make sure.
Thanks so much.

If you have a locked bootloader and you have a straight stock GB rom, with the apps and so on you have downloaded from market, you should have no issues. All apps and data should still be there on ICS.
I highly doubt mybackuppro can backup all apps/data on a non-rooted phone, so i wouldn't rely on it.
Keep in mind however it is still a fairly large upgrade and it is ALWAYS best to backup the data you need most (SMSs, contacts (if not synced), photos, videos, music and so on), even it's on the SDCard. Also note that if your bootloader is locked (no padlock on boot) you don't have any option to do a full backup at all. Unlocking it will get rid of ALL personal data. Only way forward is through the update.

So let me get this straight...
I should factory reset my Nexus S and I don't need to worry about apps and data of the app because Google will do that for me? Well that's very convenient! And I don't really care about media cuz everything is on my computer which I can just copy it back to phone.
Thanks a lot man! Now I can rely on Google for all my apps ;-)

I get the feeling that's *not* what Harbb said
If I'm correct... Harbb is saying
1) you don't need to factory reset your phone
2) theoretically, your data and apps should be safe on your phone
3) but for safety, you should backup all your stuff

Sorry kyokeun, i forgot to say that you should NOT factory reset. kto_matchu hit the nail on the head.
Every flash has it's risks, even the most minor ones. Although nothing should go wrong for you, and i highly doubt it will, there is always a chance. For your situation though, the only way to get to ICS is to go through it without a full backup - however doing so definitely doesn't need a data/factory reset.

OK, thanks guys :-D

I did mine using the downloaded OTA, and it was fine. I am running a stock, non-rooted and non-unlocked NS. However, I did backup my "SDcard" contents, SMS's and call logs prior to the update. There were no issues at all with the update process.

OK thanks. My sms and contacts are backed up and all I'm worrying is just apps and data.

When I do a NAND Backup, what does it include?

Does it get everything... as in:

- all applications including gapps, sprint apps, etc
Is there anything it doesn't get? (besides bootloader and recovery)...
Thx!

I have never gotten nandroid to work for me. EVER. I tried it twice on my adp and once on my evo. It completely ****ed up my card, and I had to reformat. I don't know what the hell I'm doing wrong..it didn't seem like it should be that difficult. However,i gave up using it after it ****ed up my d card.
If you do a ‘NANROID’ backup from ClockWork Recovery, what does it actually do?
Only reason I ask is that I want to switch and play around with some different ROMS that I’ve seen but want to back up my text messages, etc… so I can restore it all on the new ROM of my choice.
Is there a contents guide as to whats involved?
Just think of a Nandroid backup as a snapshot of everything that's on your phone at the time you make the backup. I generally check everything that's an option to backup, just in case. I'm using the Smelkus recovery.
You can't use a Nandroid to restore info to a new ROM. It's only there in case you run in to problems, then you have something to fall back on, namely, restoring whatever ROM you've backed up.

For SMS use SMS backup from the play store. Only way I know of to transfer or save messages. Real easy to use and once you load a new rom and reinstall SMS backup it will reload all your conversations if you wish

Well, not so much restores them as it saves them separately from the messaging app. Take for instance, even if I delete all my texts in my messaging app, they are still in Google Voice unless I go and delete them (which I normally do about once a week or so on my laptop since it's such a pain to delete multiple texts in the app).
Yes, Birmingham, Alabama, would be correct. I hear Ensley was nice back forty or so years ago. From what I've seen of it nowadays, I know that's no longer the case
Does it backup let's say all my mp3 files on my internal sd card too?

Titanium Backup - word of warning

I don't think this plays nice with this phone, probably not a fault with Titanium, rather with Samsung. Restored my phone today as a test and got force closes on camera. Restored cam app again no joy, factory reset clearing cache as well, still no joy. Finally had to re-flash a rom using ODIN from scratch to resolve the issue.
What was odd was that when I did a factory reset it kept the screen res I set in LCD density suggesting it was not actually resetting fully, this was a surprise to me.
I've come from a nexus one and did a titanium of it before I switched (to save all my life's work eg angry birds saves....)
This worked cool just restoring individual apps but yeah I thought I'd be clever and restore call log etc that didn't work.

Its been well posted Titanium backup restore apps only .I have found no trouble that what in countless restores .
I also copy of via root explorer the apps folder to PC so i have a backup of the app that are clean .

Bringing Epic in for service - how to conceal email?

So, yeah, I'm going to see if there's anything specifically wrong with my Epic in terms of the abysmal data speeds and nonexistent GPS I've been dealing with. I've pulled the SD card out but I don't want the folks in the Sprint store to have access to all of my email. Is there an advisable way to conceal my email (and contacts, for that matter)?

You can backup data with a nandroid and factory reset. After they are done, restore the nandroid. (assuming you are rooted)

If you really want to be secure, you can use an app that backs up your contacts to SD card (plenty non rooted ones on the Market) and then do a factory reset.
You can also just remove your email account, there is an option under "Accounts and Sync" located in Settings.
I don't think they will be looking at your email though, but I understand your privacy.

Not to my knowledge their isnt. You will probibly have to go into Settings>Privacy>Factory Reset and that will wipe your phone back to original but you will lose your apps and MMS. There are ways to back those up as stated ^^^^ but as far as you email and contacts. those are backed up through Gmail. Also from what ive noticed you cant just delete your gmail account off your phone.... Well at least mine wont let me. you can unsync it but then can easily check the box if they wanted too. Good Luck

This is way off topic but i noticed in your sig marcussant that Sprint updating isnt working? is that why my phone says error when tring to update my PRL?
PS. sorry to OP for going off topic
as far as I can tell, the issue with simply removing the google account is that one can't do that unless there's also another google account linked to the phone. in my case, contacts, email, market, etc. are all linked to one account, so the phone won't allow me to delete it. I would imagine creating a replacement account would work, but I can't be bothered. the simple fix I found was to change my gmail password so that the gmail app can no longer sync. now my inbox is empty on the Epic and that's really all I wanted.
There is an app in the android market called app protector plus. It allows you to lock any app you desire. It requires the person to use a pin or pattern password to gain access. It will set you back $1.50 but is well worth it.

But if it's just linked to the phone lock that won't work for him. You have to give them the password when you give them the phone so they can work on it.
I brought my phone in for gps issues back with ec05 and all they did was a factory reset.
Make sure you tell them you don't want it reset! That's is sprints goto plan with a phone is to reset it and go from there.
i'd really think of throughing cwm on quick, making a nandroid, odin to stock ec05, let it update to ei22 see if the issue is still there, (I'm sure it will be) then bring it to them. When they can't fix it you can quickly reroot it and restore your backup.
If you can't or just won't back it up fully try "my backup" in the market and backup what you can. Trust me, if you hand them that phone they will reset it first thing they try.
This app is separate from the phone lock pattern. It only locks the applications you set to lock out.

And since your running stock, don't worry about it, sprint already knows everything you do on your phone, e-mail, data, you name it, through CarrierIQ. Your data speeds are slow, and your gps doesn't work because sprint is so busy using it to look through your phone and see where you are.

CIQ is disabled by default, but with a service always running looking for the call to activate. Read k0nane's thread about it.
To OP: your best bet is to start over from scratch. ODIN EC05, don't accept the OTA update. Update your profile and PRL, then run GPS. If it all works, then flash the update or accept the OTA. After that finishes, test those 3 again.

I've actually done all this...I was rooted and running ROMs for months. There wasn't any real data speed improvement and battery life was lackluster with most of the ROMs, so I flashed back around a month ago in order to be able to bring the phone into Sprint. I've just been dragging my feet on it. Also, the GB I'm running is from the flashed update made available here, not the OTA.

Crackflashers do full wipe many times, so I guess they are expert at backup-ing apps. I'm currently using Go backup, not go backup ex.
What other apps do you use?
I know stormbird backup, titanium, go backup, miui backup.. what else are you using?

I was using titanium by the past, but really like the ability to restore all my apps & things without any prompt!
Titanium looks a bit complicated..

Rom toolbox can do this also. Honestly, I never backup my data. If I do backup, I only backup the apps to save me some download time. Over the last few years of using Android I've learned that most apps really just aren't important enough for me to even install so it's not a big deal to me.

???What?? they are synced to your account. What settings are you talking about? If it is general settings it takes like 2 sec. to check the box. I have never used TB for Gmail. Just get it from Play or it is in GAPPS.
You don't want to restore system settings between ROM'S, it will generally ef up the new one. Things don't necessarily mix well.

Updates are available weirdness

When I get the message up in the notification area that "Updates are available".

OK rant over But seriously. What's up with the "Updates are available" message?

when you did the factory reset.. Did you do this in custom recovery or in settings on the tablet.. Are you stock ?
Did you use anything to restore your apps such as ti backup adb restore (does not always work).
If you are on a custom rom or have been in the past.. I would suggest you do a FULL Format of your tablet system cache dalvic DATA and all...reboot the tab back into recovery adb push stock new downloaded rom to tab or use usb otg and flash brand new rom... Then see if you still have issues.. DO NOT RESTORE A BACKUP you could be putting the issues back on device..
The way the NO SD Card devices use data. you can have issues linger from a older rom or pop up after flashing.
Be CAUTIOUS ABOUT DELETING DATA ON This device. IT WILL WIPE A DOWNLOADED ROM.. and otg storage with twrp or adb push will be required to get a rom back on device to flash..
Good Luck..
No mate. Just on rooted stock.
I initiated the restore from within settings I believe.
I did two backups originally just in case.
One from ADB and one from My Backup Pro.
It backed up fine using ADB. When restoring it, I had the initial quick reboot. Then when I had the restore my data screen on the Nexus, I hit the Restore button and the Nexus rebooted back to the home screen.
The PC restore was running, but nothing got restored.
I then gave up and restored using My Backup Pro.
But after restoring everything. I keep getting the Gaaps has stopped message.
So time to backup my games and wipe again in the future.
I'll then restore everything else direct from the Play Store, to hopefully get rid off the Google Apps problem.
As for the weird symbols after the Updates are available message, they have been there since 4.2.1 though.
Looks like I'm putting up with this.
I'll grab it on a screen grab eventually

It does sound like there is something in your backups that is stopping them from restoring.. Make sure when you restore a backup you are restoring APPS AND APP DATA ONLY.. not system data and system apps.. Such as google apps being system apps.. This often restores old data on top new and causes big issues. With the fcs really sounds like this is the case..
I Think a Good WIPE and Fresh flash will help you out...

It seems my suspicions were correct concerning the &amp&anp or whatever it is that gets displayed at the end of the Updates are available message you get in the notifications are from the Play Store.
I noticed that my Samsung Galaxy S3 is showing the same thing.
It's gotta be a Play Store bug.
Because my S3 is running 4.11 and my Nexus 7 is running 4.2.1.
It almost looks like variables not getting parsed correctly.
As this only happens when there is more than one update available it seems.
And both my devices are on different versions of Jelly Bean.
And I still can't grab the screen fast enough. As you never know when the updates notifications from the Play Store will appear.

Why are the notifications not staying in the drop down?
Do you have the market Set to auto update, otherwise I have to hit the notification in order to open the store.
Unless you aren't talking about the notification area but the the ticker in the status bar up top?
