How can it not work if it freezes or if we remove the file?
Sent from my Kindle Fire using xda premium

You can remove the file, change the file, Freeze it, remove it's permissions whatever you want, but it will NOT stop an OTA update because the process that does the update creates a new one when it it needs it.
Proven Fail!

Because that app is only a tool used by the app in charge of the whole upgrade process and it appears to get reinstalled from scratch during that process if it has been moved or removed

Thank you guy's for the info.

What if we are not registered to Amazons account? Becouse wen I wanted to get the ota I registered ans clicked on sync to get the ota. Maybe the registration has something to do with it?

just root ur phone and install cm7 or try droid wall that may block it but we dont have a update to check

I bought mine when it was on 6.0.0 and installed Root Uninstaller, backed up otasilentupdate.apk and then deleted it. After that no more updates. I guess experience varies, just sharing my ways. (btw i didn't register cuz im not in the US).

because u didnt register is why u didnt get the update
We have found out that when ur registered and u try to freeze the the silent update or rename it, it still updates no matter what. I hear droid wall stops the update but not sure

Probably. I had de-registered my Kindle prior to the 6.2.1 update and I did not get the update, even though it was out for a few days and my wifi was on / tablet was being extensively used during those days.
I did get the 6.2 update before I de-registered. So almost certainly, the de-registration helped.

here is my experience:
kf was and is registered
removed /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip -> update downloaded but did not install -> was automatically deleted from cache folder after failed attempt to install
installed "nfx-update-kindle-6.2.1" -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1407852
6.2.1 is much more responsive than older version
b.t.w. root method for 6.2.1 is available:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399889

It seems to me that when an individual registers amazon uses that mac address for sending the update.... I could be wrong so please do not think that I am saying this is entirely true but, if all of these methods are confirmed as not working such as freexzing, removing apps, etc... then there has to be somesort of way that amazon is still able to update to your fire...

Good for Enterprise Supercurio Root Keeper anyone get it working?

Hi guys,
Anyone using GFE on there rooted samsung epic? My company checks for root and was wondering if the Supercurio root keeper will work to do a temp unroot and have access to GFE. Any idea if I need to rename or remove superuser.apk if I use the Supercurio root keeper?
Thanks..
Why not just make a backup via cwm and have a stock non rooted rom running? Do they check for just SU or the 9 yards? If so you could odin in the stock el30 package by toadlife, odin a recovery , make a backup and flash whatever rom then if your company decides to check restore the back up and you'll be find

The whole 9 yards I'm afraid . That is an idea but was hoping not to flip back and forth from stock to rooted. But if there is no other way it's probably the route I'm going to have to take.
Also it makes sense that it should work but since I never went back and forth from stock to rooted from CWM. The question is coming to my mind will it work? Or do I need to Odin to switch back and forth.
What is GFE?
Edit: why would it even care about root...

I use GFE and I am rooted using mostly stock ei22 rom from xbtx. I thought GFE app had some sort of checking for rooted devices not that the company checked for rooted phone. How would the company check to see that your phone was rooted ?

Good For Enterprise, it's an app to get your corporate email on your phone.
I use it, and we don't check for root.... I seem to recall from my GFE training that they can check for it, we don't.
I use GFE and I also have it deployed to hundreds of users at my company. I'm not sure if I'm somehow using a different version of the Good management console, but I don't remember having an option to check for rooted devices? I'll double check tomorrow, but I feel like I would remember seeing that option.

GFE the app has a check. From what I read it looks for superuser.apk and whatever else is root related. Coworker of mine has the same phone and rooted rom and got a message that the phone won't provision with gfe because against company policy i.e. phone is rooted.

the donate version of superuser has ghost mode, the apk hides and you can only access it through a dialer code you select. you can set it to refuse and superuser requests while in ghost mode or to allow based of your settings.
can you check for superuser without superuser permissions?
i'm sure you need something more but a chance to plug elite, i couldn't refuse.
Thanks. I'll give the ghost superuser a try. Maybe a combination of SuperCurio rootkeeper and this will work.
Well I got the superuser elite but it looks like ghost mode just hides the icon. Not sure if this will work. As GFE will still find superuser in both the /sbin and /xbin.
Update- Still not in compliance tried both rootkeeper and super user elite.

Unfortunately, this will not work. I'm not sure what doesn't match up, but each time you flash, even from a backup, it will want you to reactivate with the Good server. Fortunately, I work in IT and can get a PIN in about 4 seconds, but for someone who is at the mercy of their IT department...flashing then begging them for a new PIN isn't a good option
Weird. I backup with MyBackup Pro, and I don't have to reset my PIN every time.....
From what i gather as long as you backup good in offline mode. It wont require a pin everytime you flash. I haven't tested this my self but have read people having success using this method.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
That could be, I only turn mine on when I'm oncall.
Can you set your PIN to never expire? Last job we had that, so the handful of users who had it didn't have to get a new PIN every time.
I've been looking for Jailbreak/Root detection, but haven't found it yet. Saw it in a manual but it didn't say where to set it.
Ae these companies you guys are talking about using exchange email servers or what?? What is so different that you are using this gfe app rather than stock email app? I run corporate exchange from stock email app and no issues with being rooted however I am the network admin too though lol.

Supposedly, GFE allows for better data protection. We pay for it because of the potential for PHI* on the device. We do have OMA here, but until we upgrade our servers to Exchange2010 we don't have as much control over the device and can't remotely wipe it if it goes missing.
Or so I'm told. /shrug

So I went ahead and tried to unroot my rom. By just deleting superuser.apk and su by using adb. Only issue I'm seeing is that everytime I reboot su and superuser.apk come back and the phone is rooted again. Any ideas why? Surely GFE will not work if root returns after reboot .

You're using a rooted kernel.
Thanks k0nane! That makes sense.

I use a combo of renaming superuser.apk and installing supersu and freezing gfe to bypass the checks.... pm me if u need info.

Is there any way to re-flash stock rom w/o root?

I just had a Kindle Fire delivered this afternoon and I have not been able to get it to play Prime Videos. When I tap to Watch a video it goes into the screen where it appears to be loading then it says something like "video is not loading as fast as expected. Check wireless connectivity or try again later." I've tried everything there is to try and was bounced back and forth 4 times for about an hour and a half with support. My only hope is that something went wrong with the update and maybe reinstalling it makes it work.
Or maybe trying an older version? I have found instructions on how to recover from a rooted Fire, but not from stock.
factory reset?

With the New Update
This won't always solve your problem, but with the new 6.3.1 release out, you should be able to load that and install. That will flash it to the stock without needing to root the device.

You can download the latest stock rom directly from the Amazon Kindle web site, I believe it is in the Manage my Device section. They also provide easy instructions for installing it that don't require root.

the stock roms actually backup ur data before flashing the update. than it restores your data again.
u need to do a factory reset lol

Kindke fire hd 7" not recognised in windows or Linux

Well.... no effing clue whats happened.... it must've updated recently as no longer rooted or using golauncher... getting rather annoyed at the inability to access the internal storage via usb...
Windows brings up a massive message that when i googled it the fix was to apparently unplug the pc.... which resolved a few issues but still get the same issues with the kindle... which sucks.... managed to connect briefly with Linux but now it just seem to not acknowledge it at all....
I had what i thought were the latest drivers as i only installed them a couple of days ago.. (rediscovered scummvm!!!)
Any ideas what I can do? I want to re root and flash a totally new rom as the amazon one is truely awful
And which is the best root method for 7.4.6? If there is one....
Thanks again peeps!

You would probably benefit most by using KFFA to return to 7.2.3 then root, remove OTA updates and install GApps. This way when you go to install a custom ROM, you have a matching boot loader. In order to put a custom ROM on, you need to flash a 2nd boot loader and TWRP. All this is covered in great detail on here. If you have questions do ask.

All I can see on Amazon is:
"The software update includes general improvements and the following feature enhancements:
Enhance your device's security with encryption
You can now encrypt your accounts, settings, and downloaded apps and their data, media, and other files on your Kindle Fire. To learn more, go to Protect Your Data with Security Settings.
Test your knowledge with Flashcards for Kindle Print Replica textbooks
Create flashcards to help you learn more about key terms and concepts in a textbook. To learn more, go to Reading Enhancements."
Mine is Downloading now.
Should I stop it?

I got the update. I'm not ahving much luck with 14.3.2.1, so maybe this will have something I can spot more easily. I still think using stream writter with a fudged update may be possible, but I am running into signature issues. Maybe including it as a part of the fwupdate tar archive, but not 100% on that.
At any rate, IF YOU INSTALL SafeStrap on the stock slot & then install safestrap again while in the working rom-slot (i.e., rom-slot 1), the update will reboot into fastboot, then you will reboot (do not wipe device) & the safestrap popup will display. Otherwise the device cannot boot, because the new boot.img CANNOT insytall if you have safestrap installed on rom-slot too. At that point, all you need to do is reflash the 14.3.1.0 COMPLETE firmware bin (Hashcodes stripped zip won't do it) & you are good again. Just keep the supersu zip in sdcard for flashing right away as well.
amazon app store
Not working after update
So I activated my "stock" rom slot because I wanted to try something. I forgot about the auto update, and my kindle updated and now I lost safestrap so I can't get into my other rom slots. Naturally root is gone too. CRAP! My Kindle was running so well with GAPPS too.

Delete downloaded OTA Fire HD 8 2017 5.4.0.1

I just picked up a refurb HD 8, and it's got 5.4.0.1 software installed. I don't want to update any further, but as soon as I got online it downloaded the OTA, and says that it will update when I'm not using the tablet. So I've kept using it to stop that from happening, but I'd really like to just delete the OTA file and block it from downloading again, but I've got no idea how to, and I'm afraid it'll update on me before I can figure it out. Any help?

The best you can do is use a firewall. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=77062644&postcount=10
Thank you, I have installed the firewall, but the ota download always completes before I can get it installed and set up. What do I lose by updating to the latest version? What do I gain?

Right now, you don't lose anything. You are literally .1 too high to benefit from the disabling of system apps. You can't downgrade. Since there is no root or other method to disable apps, the choice is yours.
