do i need adb if im using ubuntu? - Kindle Fire General

I'm thinking of rooting this kindle fire but all the directions are for Windows. I rooted my EVO on ubuntu without adb. Where can I find directions for rooting with Linux?

please please please check the forums. also it would be helpful if we knew what software version you were running.

Thanks 6.2.1

Getting ADB working is your best bet. Even if you can get it rooted without adb, it will save you a lot of headache later if something doesn't work.
Getting adb to work on Ubuntu with the Kindle Fire should just require downloading the sdk, running the SDK manager to install platform-tools, adding platform-tools to your path, editing ~/.android/adb_usb.ini to include 0x1949, and likely adding udev rules for it (you can find instructions on udev rules on quite a few forums, or read the README in /etc/udev/rules.d which might help).
Rootzwiki has instructions for rooting (not using KFU) and for installing TWRP afterwards too. Just follow the steps in jcase's thread for root and the TWRP post is stickied. I'd link, but I forgot my old account and don't have enough posts on this one to link yet.

is there a How-To for rooting from Linux bootcd ?

have a bootcd for Kubuntu 9 Carmic Koala.
is there a how-to for rooting from the bootcd without installing anything?
check the how to root the htc aria topic. the same rules apply with a linux live cd and linux install.
heres a link.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=714250
Read the post because it states for the prerequisites: "If you're in Linux, you only need to do Step 4, Step 6, and Step 7." then follow the rest of the guide.
your going to need the android sdk for linux though so you can adb to the device.

any directions on how it is applied in a BOOTCD only system where nothing is changed on system?
ie. where downloaded? how installed? where?
yes, I read the post previously but there is a dearth of information on how-to for linux, yet many posts recommend doing the rom flash/root in linux
You just download the sdk. There are no drivers for your phone for linux. I used an ubuntu x86 cd and when you run adb for the first time it installs the service and you just go from there.

[Q] Rooting Rogers HTC Dream

I am moving from an iphone to a HTC Dream and I am pretty stumped on how to root my phone. It is post 911 patch. But I have a couple of questions that are probably noobish but just need clarification.
Using this guide:
Cyanogen Wiki Post 911 HTC Dream patch guide
Do I need ADK or ADB as I seem to be mixing them up and not sure.
Should the fastboot we download from there replace another fastboot already in the SDK tools folder?
I seem to be getting Batch Command not recognized when I do command prompt with it.
Any help will be greatly appreciated by this Rooting noob.
You will first need to install the USB Drivers:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html
Then make a folder and download ADB and Fastboot and extract them into that folder:
http://www.filedropper.com/adb1026
http://developer.htc.com/adp.html#s2 (just download fastboot.exe)
You should now be good to go and can just follow the the rest of that guide.
Remember that your phone is not designed to run 2.1 or 2.2 and while it will work it may be slow. See my post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8731550&postcount=3

I personally used Evostance's guide, it was very simple and easy to follow: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834427
That's the link. I do believe there are simpler methods now using Visionary. Just check the Development sub-forum and they have more tutorials there

Hey Sylpher,
I did tried to read Evostance's guide but where is the guide?
Step By Step Guide - Download link below
11/11/10 V2
http://www.multiupload.com/KK66WUNUWS
See the main thread for details on the root:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=805327 ----> i do not understand at all... all those code like listed below
Go to adb shell, switch to root (su) and do the following:
insmod /sdcard/wp-(version).ko
for example: insmod /sdcard/wp_g5ed1769.ko
This will disable wp (will be enabled on reboot though...)
dd if=/sdcard/hboot_eng.nb0 of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
This will install engineering hboot
totally confused.
The link that he provides includes all the files + the tutorial (in a PDF file). So yeah just download that first and it should be quite straightforward from there on.

You can try this too, a member here compile it. http://hemorrdroids.net/overclock-undervolt-your-desire-hd/
if you dont already have a file explorer then download astro from market place
download visonary r12 from here and copy apk file to sd card on the phone and install from there
http://android.modaco.com/content/h...722/10-nov-r12-test-visionary-one-click-root/
download superuser from market place and install on the phone
make sure usb debuggging is enabled on the, also unkown sources is allowed phone(settings/applications/development)
run visionary and don not check any of the 3 box on the screen
run temp root and let it finish
then attempt perm root it will ask for super user permission, allow this and the phone should root and reboot
to test it has work down load adfree from market place and see if it runs, if it does you have full root

Although I wouldn't recommend anyone to rush into the act of rooting their device, do bare in mind, that the exploit we are using to obtain root will be patched sooner or later, so whilst thinking about it I would be very wary of applying any future OTA upgrades as so you may find you once more have an unrootable device

Bricked (startup loop)

Hi all, I am new to the forum, I have rooted my kindle fire and while I was trying to copy vending.apk into the system, I cant.
So I changed the permission of the system\apps folder to read write, then file expert crashes and the kindle hanged.
After a reboot it is stuck at the kindle fire startup screen and kept looping.
Any recommendations on what I should do to unroot it?
I don't know if you're blind, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt with configuring your blind computer correctly to miss certain topics.
All the way on top, stickied, is a topic titled:
"[HOW TO] Unbricking/Restoring your Kindle Fire"
Follow that.
Read the thread on how to unbrick your KF, it's like 2 posts below this one.

Welcome to the forum!
However, there is a sticky post right at the top of this section (currently 2 post above yours) that offers help and tips for unbricking your KF.

EDIT - Ninja'd!
Sorry for mentioning that I am kind of unsure on the first step where we need to do the zergrush, I have installed SDK during rooting. So the fastboot.exe should be placed in that folder right? Do I access through cmd prompt and which folder should I point to?

Please direct these types of questions in the unbrick thread. We'd be happy to help you there!
Also, please read some of the other posts before you ask questions in that thread. Some people have posted commands with what the correct folder to point to so just hunt for it and you'll figure it out.

nook tablet adb no devices (potential fix)

I had been using adb successfully, then it stopped working.
adb devices would only report no devices.
Finally I reviewed the runmefirst.bat from the rooting howto and noticed there is a check in there for
"%userprofile%\.android\adb_usb.ini"
This file needs to exist and it needs to contain the following
0x2080
Once I updated that ini file adb started working again.
