[Q] Question re Need for Kindle Fire Utility - Kindle Fire General

I have successfully re-rooted my KF using BurritoRoot process after 6.2.1 update killed my previous root. I now have a functioning root and am also able to temporarily unroot using Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper. I should mention that I have market successfully running as well as various google apps including Google Currents. I haven't installed the Kindle Fire Utility.
My question is: do I have a need for the Kindle Fire Utility on my device given the above information?? Also, despite having read through the Kindle Fire Utility thread, I don't understand the term "permanent root." Does this mean that one cannot temporarily unroot the device in order to, for example, stream Amazon video??
Thanks for any suggestions.

The Kindle Fire Utility does not get installed on your Kindle Fire. It is only a method of dealing with the rooting process. If you installed BurritoRoot, and have the Google apps, there is no benefit to using it unless you need to reload the drivers for USB access.

Thanks for your answer.
Two more questions. What about the need for TWRP?? Finally, is there a way to protect the root in the event of future Amazon Kindle Fire updates??

TWRP is a recovery system that allows you to do system level backups and restores of your device. With it, you can try different updates, and restore back to where you were etc...
From the TeamWin Page: http://teamw.in/project/twrp2
* Ability to save custom recovery settings
* Touchscreen driven with real buttons and drag-to-scroll
* XML-based GUI that allows full customization of the layout – true theming!
* Settings are saved to the sdcard and persist through reboots
* Ability to choose which partitions to back up and which to restore
* Ability to choose to compress backups – now with pigz (multi-core processor support for faster compression times)
Finally, is there a way to protect the root in the event of future Amazon Kindle Fire updates??

Not at this time. there are a number of suggestions that have been made like restricting which services and apps run, but there is nothing definitive.
The ability to reroot however using the current methods should be enough though.
OR you can change to something like CM7 and you won't get updates any longer, but there are some issues like the inability to use Amazon Prime (if you care for that) that don't work with that.
As many more people get Kindle Fires, more eyes will get put on these and solutions will show up.
Wonder how many Kindle Fires are being opened for Christmas this morning..

[Q] Rooting and Amazon Prime

Hi developers!
I just received a KF as a gift and I am considering whether to root it. I want to have Prime access for the streaming video and lending library services. I have seen that there are various ways to go about rooting, and various levels of rooting, all the way up to replacing the rom completely, but I have not seen a list comparing them with respect to keeping Prime access.
So, if my goal is to keep Prime access, what are my options, and what methods should I definitely avoid?
Thanks!
look at the KFU
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399889
you can select temporary or permanent root
with permanent root you have to use voodoo OTA rootkeeper to retain prime access
While rooted, you can not use the Amazon Prime video streaming, and there may be a couple other Amazon-specific things that won't work, but I haven't bumped into them.
However, you can use tools such as OTA Rootkeeper to switch root off when you don't need it (which for me is all the time except when I want to install something that Amazon didn't want me to, such as Google Maps or Currents).
Even with Root off, if you've installed superuser (which is in the standard instructions), a tool such as ES File Explorer can elevate itself to superuser status and muck with the root-level file structure. (caution: all power tools can kill)
I don't fault Amazon for turning off streaming with Root turned on, as a rooted machine probably greatly simplifies the ability to capture DRM'd streams and keep them... but with the ease the machine is rooted, and once something's installed unrooted again, then like all DRM, it's pretty ineffective. I have no interest at all in breaking DRM, only in using my KF as more than just an Amazon media consumption tool.
Now that I've got Swype, the Android Market and Maps working, I don't see a need to keep Root on my slate... but I want to know that I can do it when I need it.
Amazon Video will not work on a custom ROM for the fire yet, but works fine rooted on the stock rom when using OTA.

[GUIDE] What do I lose if I...

Trying to consolidate information I was looking for so it can help others. Please suggest additions and corrections.
What do I lose if I:
Root
- amazon VOD (including free Prime rentals)*
- your warranty (if you brick your Fire)
Install CM7
- everything from Root list
- carousel launcher
- Kindle owners lending library
- Kindle Fire Reader app (must use standard app instead)
- newsstand subscriptions (requires official reader app)
Install CM9
- everything from CM7 list
- netflix
- possible "sleep of death"
The "Silk" browser has been ported to use on non-stock Roms.
Other things I'm not yet sure about: the send-to-kindle program/email address, stability of CM9, etc. A similar list of what is gained by each could also be useful, as long as it is kept brief.
*afaik you can "unroot" at any time to re-allow this (use rootkeeper)
Updated 2/18/12
Silk now has a port that can be installed on other ROMS. Also about the warranty, in most cases, they don't cover if you brick the device but they do cover if the charge port, power button, etc breaks.
Thanks, I updated the OP with your info.
there are many to be listed, lockscreen, amazon market, etc.. is it necessary to create a thread like this?.
Please explain the Kindle Reader part for me. I was able to install KR on Nexus tablet and it shows my cloud books, wouldn't it work on a rooted Fire ?
I want to root Fire so that I could use Google Play and Swype, but it's a wife's device, primarily, and I don't want to screw it up for her. We don't have Prime, mainly getting library books.
Also, how easy is it to reload stock Amazon ROM ?
After rooting you can install OTA Root Keeper and temporarily disable root so you can watch Prime video. If you need root for some reason you just enable it again.
There is also a possibility to dual boot and have stock rom and some other one.

Rooted Kindle Fire 6.3 fixed using Kindle Fire Utility

Hey guys i have a Kindle Fire i rooted with burrito root 3 when it was 6.2
Okay so today i turned on my Fire only to see apps missing and so i proceeded to
go to my root app delete application and tried to uninstall the stock facebook app as superuser, i was then notified i wasn't rooted. I immediately went to /device/ checked system version and seen it was now 6.3
I went trolling the web for answers to root and found this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1568340
long story short i decided to take a risk and opened up Kindle Fire Utility hit the #3 key (Install Permanent Root with superuser) once the kindle fired back up (no pun intended lol) I was once again able to be superuser and fully rooted.
I just wanted to let people know 6.3 is still able to be re-rooted via Kindle Fire Utility
Take care and God Bless
When I woke today I seen update 6.3 on the kindle. I seen the posted link showing how to root the 6.3 update. I was able to root my kindle fire again using that post.
Every since I owned my Kindle Fire I was following the CM. Thought I would install CM9 and gave it a try. Besides the current Hardware acceleration issue which I'm sure it's being worked on. I really do like how the CM9 runs and feels so far.
Just cant wait for the Hardware acceleration to be fixed. Just kinda wish I could post in the CM9 post here. Let the guy know how much I like it.
I have just restored root with Kindle Fire Utility 0.94,
option 2
All fine by now!
.........edit..........
Only that I still have 2 problems:
- cannot install Winamp, at all, just gives me an error about "not available shared library"
- cannot install Titanium Backup. I had it before and after update it kept force closing. Now, when I try to install, it says "Insufficient Application Storage", which surely isn't the case, as I could install NFS shift after this error and it shurely had enough space to do that.
Does anyone know how to solve this? (
Thanks!
.........edit(2)..........
OK, I solved with Titanium Backup:
- I could finally install, after finding and deleting this file "app/data/com.keramidas.TitaniumBac.....odex"
(where points are, I am not sure what letters were). But I remember it was an ".odex" file. And after deleting it all went well!
.........edit(3)..........
OK, I "solved" with Winamp:
- Kinde Fire has some restrictions I wasn't aware of, that stopped Winamp from installing with some shared library, I had to downgrade back to the old Amazon version, and now it installs
My kindle updated 6.03 this afternoon and it worked perfectly with me

Now let's get to the software itself. The following is step-by-step guide, please DO NOT modify the batch file in any
way, this took us weeks to perfect, so please respect the code. If you have recommendations, please post them,
we love to give you the feature that are important to YOU not us.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 1: Using Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome or Internet Explorer Download Kindle Fire First Aide 4.1.100-Beta:
KFFirstAide.zip
Note: Be sure to extract the package to C:\KFFirstAide
Update Java To The Latest Version here: Java SE Development Kit 7u25
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 2: Using either 7-Zip or Microsoft Zip, unzip the KFFirstAide100.zip to your C:\ Drive as C:\KFFirstAide
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 3: With your mouse, open the C:\KFFirstAide contents by double mouse clicking the C:\KFFirstAide folder
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 4: Find the RunMe.bat file. Right Hand Mouse click on RunMe.bat, select 'Send to', select Desktop (Create Shortcut). Now press the Left Hand Mouse button to create the Shortcut named RunMe.bat. Temporary disable the Android SDK.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 5: Find the RunMe Shortcut on your desktop, select it by left mouse click over the icon, then while on the icon choose Right Hand mouse click, select Properties.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 6: This will display the RunMe properties. Select the General Tab, change the top name to KF First Aide. Then click on the Shortcut tab, click on Advanced. Check 'Run as Administrator', click OK, then click Apply, then click OK. All windows should be closed.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 7: Double Mouse Click the new Icon named KF First Aide. You may be presented with a security window, just click Yes.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 8: Please click on the Windows Key plus Pause/Break, this will display the Windows System Properties. Next Click on the Advanced Tab and find "Environment Variables". Please click on Environment Variables and find the Path Statement. Carefully add at the end of the Path Statement:
Code:
;C:\KFFirstAide
Note: Do Not forget the ( semi-colon before the C:\KFFirstAide
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 9: That is it! The software is ready. Next we get the Kindle ready to Flash.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 10: Next, go to the Kindle, pull down the status menu, select More+ then select Security, make sure Enable ADB is ON. Last, depress the <- and select Device. Make sure 'Allow Installation of Applications' is On.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 11: Insert the Original USB Cable to the Kindle, please ensure you have a solid connection, this is VERY critical.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 12: Next, make sure the Kindle Fire is Turned Off. Take the other end of the USB Cable and carefully inset it into a free USB Slot on your Computer - be careful to not disconnect the other end.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 13 : The Kindle Fire should automatically turn on and boot regular Bootmode. If the Kindle does not turn on depress the power button until it turns on. Next select Option 15 in the Software. The Kindle will reboot and will now see a screen that says: Fastboot Kindle Fire.
Note: If Option 15 does not trigger the Kindle to boot into Fastboot, then your Bootloader is damaged. Please send SkOrPn a PM to order a Factory USB Cable.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 14: Place the Kindle on a safe surface so it does not disconnect when running the software.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 15: Launch the KF First Aide software by double mouse clicking on the KF First Aide icon.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 16: You will be presented with a Kindle Fire First Aide Menu, carefully select the operations you would like to perform on the Kindle.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 17: If the option states "Fastboot" you need to leave the Kindle as noted above, this is Fastboot Mode. As the last operation be sure to Wipe the Cache and User Data which is Backup Option 3 in the Menu.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 18: Next, we will disable "Fastboot Mode" and enable ADB on the Kindle Fire. Select Option 10 in the Software Menu, the Kindle will Reboot into Regular Mode.
Kindle Fire First Aide Step 19: You may now perform the 'ADB Mode' options in the Menu.
Kindle Fire First Aide Note 1: Remember, after you perform the full Recovery, you are working with a Fresh Copy of the Software. ADB is disabled by default so be sure to Enable ADB under Security and Allow Installation of Programs under the Device Tab.
Kindle Fire First Aide Note 2: After the complete restore, please be sure to clear the Davlik Cache and the User Data by selecting Backup Option #3. You may also wipe the User Data and Cache by opening a Administrative Command Prompt within the KFFirstAide Folder and enter:
Code:
fastboot -i 0x1949 erase cache
fastboot -i 0x1949 erase userdata
fastboot -i 0x1949 reboot
Kindle Fire First Aide Note 3: The original versions of the Kindle Fire HD 8.9" with a software Versions 8.2.3 or 8.2.4 may find there Kindle Boot-loader loops to a Red Fastboot Screen. If your Kindle is stuck in Fastboot, please follow these steps to recover the Boot-loader: How To Recover Kindle Fire HD 8.9" Bootloader*
Note: Please be aware of two main options in the Menu - one is Fastboot Mode where you have several Menu Operations that use Fastboot to execute properly and two is ADB Mode where you have several Menu Operations that use ADB to execute properly.
Backup Option #1 Note: When selecting Backup Option 1 the images will be backed up to the SD Card in a folder named KindleBackup. Please copy this folder to your desktop until we are able to upload it to our secure servers. There will be a restore option in the future that will automatically pull YOUR images for restoration. There is a known Bug in Windows where you will not see the images in the Kindle Internal Drive which can be found in Computer. To overcome this issue, please download and install WiFi File Transfer then open your Web Browser to transfer these Backup files from your Kindle to the PC.
Backup Option #2 Note: When selecting Backup Option 2 the images are first copied to the Kindle, then they are transfered to your Computer inside a folder named Backup which can be found inside the C:\KFFirstAide folder.

We would like to thank Mark Skippen for the "Toolkit" idea. Mark is a real master with Samsung products and his profile can be found here: mskip anyone who owns a Samsung or Samsung built (Nexus) product should obtain his Toolkit.
*Note: After several conference calls with the Amazon Development Team we found Amazon applied a patch to the Bootloader in an effort to lock down the Bootloader, this patch rarely causes the Bootloader to stick or Bootloop, please use the above link to release the Bootloader. We have removed this patch from the boot-prod.img eliminating future issues with recovered HD 8.9" users.

Krsmqn,
We thought of you when we were developing this package, It took us over 4 months to perfect. We held back many feature, just wait until we release the Production Version of 4.2.3, it even made us smile. As we have said before,
we are truly honored to be part of the XDA Community and feel blessed to be able to offer this software to XDA Members. This package and version 4.2.3 is fee based elsewhere.
LOL, you typed in my user name so many times that I'm afraid if anyone does a Google search for me they will get re-directed to this thread first and foremost
I am honored you feel so highly about my work, really I do. Thanks for all you do as well. Wish I could develop software, but I am a hardware developer myself. Its Devs like you that make me want to own a Kindle, lol :good:
I was born to tinker... so this is definitely for me.
Questions on Version 4.2.3beta:
Does it come with preloaded non-stock launchers?
Will my device be rooted afterwards?
Will google apps be preloaded?
Or is it going to be like out-of-the-box new /with tweaks?
Thanks.

As we said, we really did think of you as we were developing the package. I said to my developer, "we have to notify
XDA User Krsmqn as soon as we launch this package...". The current Beta release includes all the 17 features mentioned
above including preinstalled ChainsDD Superuser so it is Rooted. By the time you get the cable, we will have released the
production version 4.2.3 which should include menu options to install: Nova Launcher, Go Launcher, Apex Launcher and
ADW Launcher. We will also have a menu option to install Google Play and Google Apps. In release 4.2.4 we will have
over 40 additional features which will include but not limited to: automated v6 Supercharging, automated build.prop
edits, automated services.jar refinements, automated Deodoxed, Automated Zip-alignment, and much much much more!
Just post what you would like to see immediately in production release 4.2.3 and what you would like to see in future
releases.

SkOrPn,
Yes, true, this is why your name has a redirect to your profile, so if anyone clicks on your name it immediately redirects
to you. Hey SkOrPn you do good work and good work needs to be acknowledged. We are very picky company with the
people we choose to support but once we make that choice we are extremely loyal to the vendor. This software package
is in it's infancy and very raw. We plan to change the code to C# and pack everything into one executable for
portability, so anyone who does field service work can place this app on a thumb drive and launch it from the customer's
site. I love software development since the options here are limitless. Since mskip focuses on the Samsung, we decided
to focus on the Kindle and stay away from his area of expertise. Once this package is polished we will be ready to launch
custom ROM's for the Kindle. Much more to come.................

I'd like to see something that allows easily changed wallpaper. Something that allows you to add your own photos. I'm an amateur photographer with several HQ pictures that I'd like to have as wallpapers.
With photo's in mind, some kind of script, or whatever, that would allow you to customize and add pictures in the stock locker. I like the stock locker so I kept it. I just wish I could add a whole bunch of personal photos to it.
One more thing. When the DPI is lowered, the normal android lock screen returns but it has a black background. I have my DPI set at 180 and the black lock screen is still there. I like that locker too but wouldn't want to keep it w/o pictures. Only problem is, I love that look when the DPI is lowered. I really want to keep it at 180. So if there's any way to add the ability to add photos to the locker when the DPI is set below whatever the change point is, that'd be sweet.
Thanks.
P.S. per the media player idea, I like Pro Player. Just an idea.

Another wonderful idea. It is funny Krsmqn, we are working on the software at the moment and guess what feature we
are testing? The wallpaper idea! Yes, this feature will be included in future releases. I will look at the 180 dpi, I do
not see a problem with this integration. I will also look at Pro Player, I think this is the player we use on our Nexus

Based on @savvytechwinner's work, on Wicki's work (Mod Edit - NO links to competing Forums) and on some experimentation of my own, I put together a new script to further ease the setup of an out-of-the-package Amazon Fire 7 / 7th gen and to clean up more throughly. This is a derivative / remix / improvement rather than something new. Thanks go to all the people this work is based on.
I already announced this in savvytechwinner's thread, but I figured setting up it's own thread is warranted.
What it does:
OTA Updates are blocked
Lockscreen ads are removed
Functional Google Play Store and Google Go search are installed
Bloatware is removed from the tablet
Functional Nova Launcher, Adblocker (DNS66) and light Youtube Client (NewPipe) are installed
Out-of-the-package instructions:
Have adb and Amazon Fire USB drivers installed on your PC.
Power on your Fire tablet, do the initial setup. DO NOT CONNECT TO WIFI. Instead, select any password protected wifi, then cancel, and initial setup will let you continue without internet.
Enter Settings -> Device options -> click Serial 7 times. A new menu entrypoint called Developer options will pop up.
In Developer options, enable ADB, then connect your tablet to your computer. Confirm the fingerprint. If that didn't work, look here for troubleshooting.
Now, extract the contents of this package somewhere on your computer and double click FireOneClick.bat.
You can watch how Amazon's apps vanish, but it is recommended not to do anything else with your tablet while the script does its work.
After it's finished, enter Settings -> Accessibility -> "enable To detect home button press". Then, open the LauncherHijack app and select Nova Launcher.
Open the DNS66 app and start it. This will run in background (at low memory consumption) and block ads.
Download the One Click Script from here.
Full readme, including credits and more info is found in my GitHub repo.
Just a heads up, I used this script on a fire 7 I had literally just opened, and it was successful in loading GApps and Blocking ads, but it did not debloat the amazon apps and it also did not block OTA updates...I woke up to a fire 7 that auto updated to 5.6.0. I'm not complaining here, since Nova Launcher is still installed and ads are nonexistent, just letting you know!

Dammit... what version did you start on? Assuming it was 5.4.0.1?
Hi my 7" is on 5.4.0.
Does this just block the download or the update itself? Because I accidentally downloaded the OTA update but the tablet doesn't updated jet.
Is there a way to delete the update without root?

It blocks the update itself by disabling all apps that would apply it. I still recommend turning Wifi off and doing a factory reset, so the update data is gone for sure.
Blocking the update / debloating most likely did not work for @hiphopsded cause he started from 5.4.0.1. Blocking updates / removing ads / debloating is onlypossible on v5.4.0.0 and below. I am somewhat surprised he doesn't have ads on the lockscreen, but I think that is due to the DNS66 adblocker doing it's work properly.
EDIT: @hiphopsded - maybe there is still hope, but you'll have to do the research yourself.

@k8500 I was on v5.4.0.0
I opened it brand new from sealed packaging, canceled connecting to a WiFi I did not have the password to, and was brought into the device home screen without ever connecting to WiFi to verify that I was on v5.4.0.0 and proceeded with installing the one click script.
Everything worked except debloating the tablet and OTA Updates being blocked. Not sure what went wrong. But having the launcher, google apps, and no ads is fine enough.
Another confirmation of this working on 5.4.0.0
Just received an Amazon Fire 7 - 7th gen. It ships with 5.4.0.1
I was able to downgrade from 5.4.0.1 to 5.4.0.0, then use this batch file to clean up the tablet.
Thanks!
already (well) used 7gen currently on 5.6.0.1
any idea when this will be updated to work on 5.6.0.1?
and next question does it actually root the tablet?
thanks in advance

Does not root and will not be updated for 5.6.x.x as Amazon disabled the underlying commands that perform the magic.
5.6.x.x update question

ok. So, bottom line, I can either wipe the unit, and start over; or
try and root the fire tablet to get rid of ads, and install other stuff...)
any other ideas?
I've rooted lots of android, and would actually prefer a more android, rather then amazon centric tablet....
thanks in advance...

Can't root 7th gen Fire at present. Period. Can't load a different ROM w/o root. Try sketchy rollback/debloat techniques at your own peril. Contact Amazon to dump annoying lock screen ads. Install a VPN based firewall like AdGuard to dispense with in-app advertising. Possibly install a different launcher using non-root techniques. Pretty much it.
Maybe I'm a little late in opening this thread up again, but let me ask this:
I just got a Kindle 7 (7th generation) in the mail, to replace our son's old one (5th generation, though unfortunately never rooted) that started messing up (so presumably the new one is refurbished). We don't like all the amazon bloat, etc., and would prefer the different launcher or anything more android-like we can get. I would love to block the OTA updates. So your tool sounds great.
I opened it and turned it on but haven't set up the device yet. I see it's version 5.3.3.0 Does this one click script of yours work on the 5.3.3.0 ? Are there any other suggestions on the best way to use my new device (taking out amazon bloat and more like google) considering it's *not* the newest OS that Amazon makes? I.e. are there any options I have available to me currently that I want to be sure I don't lose out on by accidentally updating or something? Thanks for any help you can provide!

Thanks for letting me know, but maybe I'm doing something wrong because I can't get it to work at all. To start with, I had already opened my fire tablet but skipped setup (also skipped signing into wifi because I knew that could give me an auto-update). So maybe that's what screwed it up? Maybe I should reset to factory and try again?
I had installed the fire drivers too but my fire never showed up in "portable devices" in device manager (in fact, I never saw such a category - but it did show up in devices as "MTP device").
The adb worked fine as I was able to get it to "show devices". However, the one-click never did anything. Usually I use powershell, but then I tried running through normal command prompt, but still no luck. I tried putting it in my adb fastboot folder (is that my problem? does it need the full adb and adb fastboot isn't enough?) and it still didn't work. So, maybe my first step was the problem or maybe a subsequent one, I don't know, but I couldn't get any of it to work.
uninstall apps
cannot uninstall applications , i downgrade to 5.4.0 but applications are only hiding , they are still in the system .
PROOF : you can check your free space before and after uninstalling, you will gain nothing important.
but for removing ads or blocking update , its working for 5.4.0 !!!
