Just sharing some info for noobs.
So you set your CPU to 1.22 Ghz and checked 'set at boot'. You enjoy your 10% speed increase until suddently you get a random reboot. You know it is because you set the CPU too high (for your phone, every phone is differnet) so you wait for it to reboot so you set it back but then BAM! another reboot. Now Sh!t hits the fan because of the 'set at boot' flag has been checked. You didn't do a nandroid backup recently or you don't have any set up. What to do??
I found this on android developers forum and thought I should share this in an OP because it's very valuable for us overclockers.
Basically, to remedy this, you need to delete the SetCPU config file from the internal memory. To do, follow this:
1) Boot into recovery
2) Connect USB
3) open ADB shell - 'adb shell'
4) mount the Data folder - 'mount /data'
5) navigate to the Data folder - 'cd /data/data'
6) Remove the config file - 'rm -r com.mhuang.overclocking'
7) exit and reboot phone
Now you should be all set. SetCPU is now in its default form.
havn't needed this yet but very useful for everyone who does need it
good job
Nice find bro, wish I would have none this a few weeks ago
Awesome. Thank you
Or, if easier, you can just pull the SD card, and put a text file named 'setcpu_safemode' in the root of the card, then reinsert and boot. The dev added that feature a while back.
Thanks man, first day owning my droid inc, and I'm a little too used to cranking my old moto droid up all the way without consequence. I don't even need the little scosh of a speed boost I'm just always effing with things. Oh well lesson learned, no harm no foul.

Don't blame SetCPU for the fact that you didn't know what you were doing. That's not the app's fault, it's yours.

Ok, played with setcpu today, for the first time, and after awhile set the orevclock to max and now the phone reboots everytime I try to open anything. I found this thread and put the .txt file on my sd's root, but it didnt help. I am using amon_ra and cant figure out how to try the other method with it. Can someone please help me out.
Update, I made another .txt file and this one seemed to work, but I now see there is a flashable .zip you can extract in setcpu itself.
Err...there's a failsafe built into setcpu. It places a file on your sd to flash in the event of a bootloop.
Simply look in the setcpu settings for it.
You could also mount SD card from recovery and do it that way
Deck's + SZ + SuperCharger script + ViperMod script.
I've been running cm7 nightlies and now stable 7.0 for some time now. I have the new radio, ladios' kernel, and the sdcard read fix flashed.
I installed super manager and successfully deleted some of the stock cm7 media off my phone last week. Today, I came across the new GPS.conf files and wanted to try them.
Super manager couldn't switch the system to r/w despite saying "ok"
When I try to delete or write in the system with EStrongs file explorer, ghost commander, or android mate, they all give strange errors. The deleted files disappear but reappear after reboot. If I try to paste a file in system/etc I only get an error.
Superuser is successfully allowing permissions. I have the latest busybox. I have r/w enabled in each file manager.
I even tried an adb push test which first said "system is r/o only". The next try was "successful" but didn't do anything.
I'm still new with adb so I probably did something wrong. I typed in that r/w command, mount now shows: /dev/block/mtdblock3 on /system type yaffs2 (rw,relatime)
I can't figure out what changed and what I need to do to get r/w permissions. My only theory is that i had uninstalled and reinstalled super manager earlier and that somehow messed with my permissions.
You cannot permanently modify the system partition while the phone is booted into Android. The only way is to use adb while the phone is in recovery mode. Any changes you make while the phone is booted will be lost after a reboot.
Go check on those media files you thought you deleted. I bet you'll find they are still there.
Yes that worked. Thank you.
I thought I had read somewhere that you had to be booted to adb push.
I also thought that root managers advertising r/w capability would make permanent changes.
Next question:
Can I add and remove files from the cm7 zip before flashing it? Do I have to rezip it in any special or can windows 7 manage it fine?
EDIT: Ok I guess i need to sign it... lets see...

It really is as simple as adding or removing a few files from the zip file if you want to modify it.
I'd appreciate it if someone could give me some assistance. Basically the situation is that I wanted to get VPN working on the A7 which required tun.ko. I cross compiled the kernel and managed to get a tun.ko file and I added it to my device. Installing the module did not work, so I left it.
At some point my A7 shut off, and now it will not boot, it hangs at the ANDROID screen, before getting to the HC animation (dexmod 1.42). I am assuming at this point that my tun.ko is the issue so I created a patch update to remove the modules I had added to see if that would work.
Note: This patch is exactly the same as the ElocityMod 1.4.2 ad-hoc patch, I just changed the script actions and re-bundled.
The script only does this:
delete_recursive SYSTEM:lib/modules
delete SYSTEM:lib/tun.ko
I created the /system/lib/modules dir, so I know it exists, as does the /system/lib/tun.ko. When I try to run the update script I get the following error:
Installing Update
close from_child
E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
(Status 6[1536])
Installation aborted.
I am trying not to flash back to the 1.4.2 as I have some investment and stupidly did not back-up before I started this venture. Any help would be appreciated.
Brad
As a side note, according to the /proc/config.gz on the tablet (kernel config) the TUN/TAP is compiled into the kernel, but not compiled as a module. For this reason I doubt VPN will work unless the apps can recognize the TUN device instead of failing because the module does not exist.
with specifics to an update script, the script desired should be as follows
Code:
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "mount", "-orw,remount","/system");
delete("/system/lib/tun.ko");
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "mount", "-oro,remount","/system");
you will need to remember to sign your update.zip after creation if you're not familiar with the process. searching on xda should turn up results for 'sign update.zip'.
i'd list the specific files and not do recursive deleting. though if introducing a kernel module caused you problems, i don't think it was merely copying/removing that had an effect, but wouldn't you have had to either issue an 'insmod' command manually or you added a call to that module using insmod added to the init.rc or a bash script. you need to remove that reference too if you did.
if your 'investment' is related to your /data folder (with your stored apps and app settings), you can use my cwm fakeflash recovery to backup and restore your /data contents (installed apps, and system settings) after a factory reset and reloading dexter's rom (using factory recovery).
alternative solutions; maybe if you were doing these kind of experiments you MIGHT have left the usb device setting on (for adb connectivity). if so, try to adb shell into the device to correct your problem by hand; type adb devices from a command prompt for fun to see if the device still lists (it did for me when softbricked once).

..alternatively alternatively i also did a update.zip of the latest factory rom that may assist with your issue, if the above solutions do not work. assuming your 'investment' isn't in the /system folder, it can format your /system folder and reinstall the /system files from the factory firmware with all correct permissions. a little examination of my update.zip could be used as a template for creating a similar one for dexter's rom, for these particular times when you'd like to re-do your /system folder and leave the rest of your partitions and data intact.
locatable, roundabout, from my twitter. same name as here.
oh. you could just write a script to execute a bash script (file.sh) thats got simple copy commands to copy your 'investment' to sdcard (/sdcard in recovery). that might be the simplest non creative approach that would allow you to continue on with a normal factory reset and reload of dexter's rom.
using bash scripts might also aid you in doing what you want without having to know or experiment with proper scripting syntax.
..oh, AND you could just edit dexter's rom update.zip to only install the system.img, and remove the rest of the files for installation, and DON"T do a factory reset..
that could help with restoring your system filesystem while leaving the rest of your data intact. didn't occur until this morning, that might be you EASIEST of the multiple suggestions listed.
Thanks for the response!

I did insmod it as well as modprobe, it gave me an error which was likely because (as I found later) the TUN is compiled into the kernel, which means a module could not possibly load.

The issue with the A7 is that it's got USB host only which means I cannot connect it to my PC and adb it. This was a known issue before I bought the A7.

In the end I went more heavy handed than all that and it worked out fine. I did this before I saw your response otherwise I would have tried to finesse it some more just for the fun of it.
I re-flashed with dexmod 1.41 but I did not reset or wipe anything first. Applying this over top got me booted again with all my apps. 1 quick 1.42 update (and annoying root FB upgrade) and I am back to pre-fail conditions. I backed up my stuff too.
Thanks again for all the useful tips. This type of event has happened a few times and my gut says I am getting some corruption on the NVRAM or something. Only time will tell.
adb connectivity works fine, the solution is buried in one of 5stronginos threads, maybe the cwm recovery one. google for USB_OTG.APK i think, its posted on xda w a download link.

[SCRIPT] No-lag solution to CM7/9 "low memory" notifications (STEP BY STEP,FIXED TB)
23/01/12 - Now with Titanium Backup support!
The Titanium Backup team is awesome. I contacted them and within 3 days they had a working fix. To make sure that titanium backup works properly all you need to do is download the latest version from the market, go into 'preferences' and select 'follow all symbolic links' in the 'Troubleshooting' section at the bottom. That's it. Now you'll be able to backup normally and then restore your apps in any other rom. Neat!
Click to collapse
Okay, I've found a rather excellent solution to the low storage problem that plagues the CM7 and CM9 roms - without causing the lagginess of the ".nodatadata" approach. It's not my work but was posted by drefnel on the Cyanogenmod forum. It's very smart: instead of moving the whole of /datadata (fast yaffs2) to /data (slower ext4) and so introducing lag it keeps most apps' non-performance critical data on /data and moves performance critical sqlite databases and xml preference files to the fast /datadata.
Installing this fix is a two step process:
Phase 1 - some prep, takes around 10 minutes to complete. Only has to be done once.
Phase 2 - running the script whenever you've installed new apps and used them once or twice. this just involves hitting a shortcut on your home screen. boom!
The original guide can be found here we need to make a few alterations and I've done a step-by-step below:
Step by step guide
I take no responsibility if using these instructions messes up your phone. They worked for me and you should always be able to restore using the clockworkmod backup. But you can't say you haven't been warned.
Make sure you're running CM7 or TeamHacksung's CM9 or Onecosmic ICS.
This will NOT work on encrypted phones.
DO A NANDROID BACKUP BEFORE YOU BEGIN.
Phase 1 - (if you've already used the ".nodatadata" method then start at step 4)
1. Download Terminal Emulator
2. Open terminal emulator and then enter each of the following followed by return:
su
touch /datadata/.nodatadata
3. Reboot (this might take a while as the OS will be making changes to your filesystem).
4. Open terminal emulator and then enter each of the following followed by return:
su
rm /data/data/.nodatadata
5. Reboot into recovery, go to "mounts & storage" and then select "format datadata". Reboot normally.
6. Go to the market and download GScript Lite. Open it and close it again - this should create a folder called "gscript" in your sdcard. Unzip the file attached in this post and place the script in it in that folder.
7. Open up GScript Lite, press menu and add script. Click load file, select the script file, make sure that "needs SU" is selected and click save.
8. Run the script by tapping it. You should see GScript report its progress and finally the script should finish. Press close and gscript will crash out (can't have it all ).
Phase 2
Add a shortcut to this script on your desktop.
CM7 - long-press and hold a blank area of your home screen, select 'add shortcut', and then select 'gscript lite'. select the script you've just added.
CM9 - go into your app drawer, select the 'widgets' tab, find 'gscript lite', press and hold it and move it onto your home screen. select the script you've just added.
You should use the shortcut after you've installed new apps and used them a few times. There's no harm in not using the script for a while, all that will happen is that app may become a bit laggy until you use the script to move its data to /datadata.
That's it. Congratualtions!
You can flash new CM roms and the script will carry on working fine, but if you wipe data in recovery then you'll have to start from the beginning
You won't be able to easily go back to the original configuration or use the ".nodatadata" method (you'll need to Titanium Backup, wipe everything and then restore), but you'll never miss them.
Good luck
I hope this helps people out. We should find a way of better automating the steps to make it more noob friendly and maybe Team Hacksung and One Cosmic could incorporate it into their ROMs. (Essentially the script needs to be run periodically to make sure that the performance critical /data/data elements of new apps are copied across to /datadata - apart from that it's not too different from the ".nodatadata" approach).
Personally using the much simpler .nodatadata approach, i found that after a rom (cm9) install, most lag goes away after using it for a few hours, although I have heard the speed of the flash memory is not equal on all devices... so could be laggy for some regardles of usage.
Yup I've tried both and the script approach is definitely much quicker in my case. I'm going to see if I can simplify this procedure somewhat.
Sorry for being a noob.. I am not sure how to apply the script to my Android device... Should I use Terminal Emulator on my Galaxy S and type the script in there? Would you mind to guide me through the process? Thanks a lot
Now with a step-by-step guide.
Man you are awesome! Thanks for your guide!
Wouldn't it be an idea tu use scriptmanager (free or pro) instead of gscript? it can run scripts on boot.
Maybe later, when the standard kernel for cm9 will support init.d, it can be an init.d script?
And oh, I will put a link to this thread in the wiki, you can edit the wiki yourself also if you ask for acces.
seem like there is no one try on OneCosmic, and im going it a shot!

Good points. The reason I chose GScript was its user friendliness and simplicity. There are define advantages in running this script at boot. (I'd much prefer to have things run automatically before the GUI appears (as in init.d) rather than clog up GUI boottime as Script Manager would require.)
The phenomenal uptime I get with Android means that I don't reboot very often. Ideally we'd want something that monitored the data/data folder and ran the script on the appearance of new folders. I'm not sure how you'd automate that without resorting to Tasker. Maybe init.d is the best we can do when it's supported. In the meantime a GScript shortcut on the desktop that I hit once every couple of days feels like the best option so far!

There are more advantages in scriptmanager. You are not bound to a specific location on the scared for example, with gscript it has to be in /sdcsrd/gscript folder. And you can make a widget with this script in it, making it a one-click operation but I believe that is a paid feature (and gscript can do something similar, no?)
On the other hand, it is as you say, a bit more complicated.
Also making it a init.d isn't a full solution. Every update from the ROM will wipe the /system/etc/init.d so the script needs to be reinstalled.
Maybe a cwm-flashable would be needed than, everybody here can flash. In that case also the initial commands could be run during flashing.

Yup, a flashable zip which runs initial commands and then appends on an init.d script seems like the way to go. Once the CM9 kernel supports I'll learn how to make these (essentially lazy, me)
BTW, making a one click operation from GScript is easy. Just add the GScript shortcut to your home screen and it will prompt you which script you want to run on click (remember that shortcuts are now grouped with widgets in ICS)

I've installed the newest Lineage OS, but I want to turn of "Double Tab to wake". But after one day, it automatically turned on again, but without showing it in the settings (showed that it's turned of). Now I have the question if there is any possibility to turn it off?
Thanks,
Philipp
The setting does not stick after the reboot. You have to enable it and disable it again. Then it should be really disabled until the next reboot.
Okay, thank you. I hope they will fix it soon
I think it may be because you flashed a custom kernel.

Until they fix this you can use a script to disable it. Use init.d or any automate app to run the script at boot. It'll turn off the tap2wake.
#!/system/bin/sh
tap2wake=/proc/touchpanel/double_tap
echo "0" > $tap2wake
could you maybe tell me how to use this command? Sorry for that, but I am new in that and don't know what to do

Since you're new to this I'll give you the easiest way to do this.
1. Download the script from the link given below. (or use my last post's code to make a script yourself)
2. Put it in a folder in sdcard.
3. Install 'init.d scripts support' app from play store.
4. Open the app & tick 'try to aquire root privileges'. Grant root access.
5. Tick 'run scripts at boot time' option.
6. Set 'execution delay' to a desired time.
7. Select the folder you put the downloaded file.
Tap2wake disable script - http://www.mediafire.com/file/r4h5z8p1ez21jpi/tap2wakedis.sh
Done. Now every time you reboot, app will execute the scripts in the selected folder which contains our script to disable double tap2wake.
You can always execute the script using ini.d, su.d, tasker, macrodroid etc.
I have some problems with activating it, I've put the error message as attachment maybe you could look over it.
