Hello,
I have just bought Xoom and selling my IPad 2
However, I found it abit unfinished OS and hard to find things around.
How do I disable my xoom scanning all internal memory and SD card folders and let it scan only Pictures and Videos folders?
Is there an app to lock other apps? Tried privacy guard, but doesn't seem to work on the xoom?
Is there a way to create folders on screens?
Is there a way to have the Xoom charging when connected to usb?
thanks

Hi, and welcome to the Xoom community here. I'll tackle the last two questions.
As for making folders (and generally having the smoothest scrolling experience on the Xoom) I would suggest you get the ADW Launcher EX. You can also customize it like crazy. Anyway, the newest version previews the upcoming Android 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) OS's launcher, but ADW is always better than stock. Folders are easy to make (too easy, imho) and lots of resizable widgets, too.
About charging from USB...no go. The Xoom has two powerful Lion batteries that would charge way too slowly via USB. On the other hand, it takes almost no time to fully charge the Xoom from zero with the wall charger, and it holds a charge for a good long time, depending on how you use it (mainly screen brightness eats up the charge).

If you are talking about stopping a particular folder from showing up in the gallery, you can use a file browser such as ES File Explorer or Astro to either rename the folder to start with a full stop (that's a period for you 'Merkins ) or create a new file in the folder with the name of ".nomedia" (without quotes).
Alternatively, if you download QuickPic (a Gallery alternative) it has settings within the app which allows you to choose which folders you want to show up.
Hope this helps.
In my opinion I use Go Launcher. It's awesome and has tons of customizations. It's free in the Market so there's no need to worry. ADW is a paid app. I own almost all the mainstream launchers and I stick with Go Launcher on my SGSII and Xoom.
You can create folders with Go Launcher by dragging an app on top of another (Example: Fieldrunners on top of Tetris and then rename it to Games).
Don't go by reviews to much in the Market because not everyone has the know how or patience on spending the time it takes to customize the screen to his/her liking.
Good luck.

I tried LauncherPro and it seems to be okay! Is ADW Launcher EX much better?
I would say here the IPad wins. It does charge from USB when IPad not in use, simply by having the display off. This is an advantage since I don't want to carry my charger with me if I want to charge. These tablets use standard usb port, so it would be easy to get. Having one at work, home, friends have etc..

I tried the .nomedia file but it simply didn't work! I tried it in the root of my unwanted image files, but they keep coming. So the .nomedia solution is not working which I would say it is best!
Having a period for in front of a folder name, would hide the folder from listing unless I show all hidden folders/files.
If I use QuickPic, does it then do the trick for the Gallery app too??
Why isn't there just a simple solutions just like my phone, where it is possible to hide unwanted folders from the scanner :-(

Not sure why the .nomedia file didn't work. To be fair I always use the folder rename option so I don't think I've actually tested this.
QuickPic will, unfortunately, only govern it's own settings.

You might have to restart your Xoom, or find another way for it to refresh its database of what is supposed to be visiable and what isn't.
I seem to remember having the same issue after adding the .nomedia file, and a restart fixed it.
Great choice buying a xoom and selling your ipad:-D .
I'm also getting a xoom soon (although i didnt have an ipad)
Hi I will be getting a xoom in the next couple days too im just seeing if the price will drop after crimbo, just a little question how do you find the weight of this device as it seemed a little heavy when I had a little play in the shops.

No question that the Xoom has a bit more heft to it than some other tablets but tbh, I haven't found it a factor. I actually think it's reassuring, the transformer, for instance, feels a bit flimsy to me.

Yes but the iPad is very slow to charge even with a wall charger compared to the xoom, and the usb charge for the ipad is just a trickle charge i'm sure.

^^ True that!
Im brand new to the zooom but the charge time is amazing, I was worried about the charger size but it charges so quickly Id rather carry that then the iPads USB wire.
Id also agree with another bloke who said it to use Go Launcher - I've yet to install it on the Xoom but its great on my HTC Sensation!
It right, the ipad charger is an apple charger but smaller than the one used in xoom. It can be faster to charge the xoom but the ipad do last longer than the xoom. The screen is brighter in the ipad.
I am not trying to make the ipad best but just trying to be fair in comparison
I still prefer xoom over ipad even I can see that ipad lasted longer in one full charge.

Fair enough, but there are ways you can make your charge last longer...if you're rooted you can set cpu profiles and you can even undervolt.

Mine last at most 2 days but my ipad lasted for more than 4 days same usage.

Everyone,
I thought at first the Samsung Tab would need lots of work. But having the Droid I and HTC Incredible, I'm thinking... wait... you can change any Android device to be awesome. First, I found out you can root the Samsung Tab. Cool. Then there is a video on youtube to download SPAREPARTS. What it does it makes all the APPS strech out perfectly. Guess what? All the APPS work 100% and none look odd. So then I install AnyCPU. My Samsung Tab oddly charges from my M11Xr2 (11inch) Alienware laptop. Second, I ran the process to 100mhz when the screen is off. The power last FOREVER. When it's on, it run at 800mhz on conservative mode. I'm not even half way down on battery and it's been almost 4 hours. Finally, I installed LauncherPro and bye bye Verizon /samsung interface. Check out the screenshots. It looks freaking awesome. It looks like my HTC incredible and it's fast with the battery lasting forever. There are 5 pics. The laptop is my Alienware M11xR2 (11inch) so you can see how big and nice it is. I attached screenshots to show the root and nice interface. My wife loves her pics in the mid. I'm in the military... what a better way for her (nagging... j/k) to see her everyday. This device is awesome!

cant even find setcpu in the market, but read it somewhere on htc evo 4g to set cpu to 100mhz on idle. but in my case, idle is not eating away battery that much, dunno if it helps
the only one draining is display, around 70%
Your right. It's setcpu. You should be able to find it in the market. I believe it's in the top paid market spot and you should find it by name or by typing root.

Yes, a 1000 times Yes.
Its considerably smaller than I thought it would be. A bit heavier as well.
As many have mentioned before, I wish that the auto-brightness setting were brighter.

Yes.

I wish the screen itself had more contrast/brightness overall (I have Auto off and brightness on full, and its still only so-so).

Got mine this morning, copied over an mp4 movie and it plays very well. Don't like the default book reader because I don't know if its possible or not but I couldn't open my own epub files from it which would have been great because the app itself is actually nice. I'm still at work so I couldn't play with it as much as I would have liked to and the time I did have to spend on it I started installing some of my favorite apps (all free) like task manager, androzip, pandora, sketchbook...battery life has been great so far but again no real tests yet. I will def play with it more once I get home tonight and let everyone know if there are any issues. Sorry, forgot to mention how annoying the power button is as well as the extra charger that I have to carry around now.
Here we can rant about our beautiful new smartphones to hopefully relieve some stress. Sound good? I'll begin.
For starters, I hate the framrate issues that occur too often for a phone with 2GBs of RAM! Clearing a recent app, hitting the home button, or opening up messages always gives me an annoying st-stutt-ter that simply should'nt be ther. I also hate that it is impossible to access your internal storage from a Mac or Linux based computer? Really? I can plug a cheap $10 mp3 device from the 1930's, drag and drop some music and be good to go. Also, what is up with pop-up? pop-out? play?! Why can it only be used (for my knowledge) with videos that are saved onto the phone?! AND how can I put them on the phone with my Mac?! URGH, I can choose between 16, 32, or 64 GBs BUT I still need an SD card to put basic media on my phone? I also don't like how you can't change the shortcuts on the lockscreen, the phone has 8 different main colors between TouchWiz, ICS, and the Nature UX, I originally made this thread on my phone but got a text and tried to go back into Chrome and my text disappeared, AND how they took the AutoText? feature out of TouchWiz (when you can make your phone automatically substitute "sm" into a smiley face or whatever else you want to configure AKA the thing I liked most about TouchWiz). WOW, *takes a deep breath* I feel better. What would you like to rant about?!
P.S. I LOOOOVVVVEEEE my phone though, it just has some slightly annoying kinks (just like every other phone).

I know! This is such a huge letdown. I went into a T-Mobile store today to test it out and was disappointed because I wanted to watch youtube videos while I multitask. In another thread, a person said it is possible use pop-up play with streaming online videos as long as you play with a stock video player.
Have you tried that?

I have not ever been given the choice to what player I would like to use except for once on a facebook video someone uploaded and it DID work but other than that it does not allow me to use this on YouTube videos. :/ maybe someone could help? I can try to mess with YouTube real quick.
Update: nope, still couldn't get it to work and I tried both the mobile sight and the youtube app. Different settings, longclick on the video etc. Oh wells
I love the feel of the phone, the battery life, the WiFi speeds, the display, and the speed, but...
The noise on the headphone jack is distracting and awful. Like, making me wish I had bought the Galaxy Nexus bad.
The Bluetooth range for my headsets appears to be about half that of my Vibrant. I used to be able to leave my phone on the counter and wander from room to room, but now it needs to be in my pocket. (To be fair, I haven't tried it with Power Saving off yet.)
How do I.....
Remove labels under the icons on the home screens?
Remove the page indicator?
Reorder bookmarks and get the reorder to stick in the stock browser?
I want to stick with TouchWiz and stay close to stock for now. I understand other launchers can do what I want, but I don't want to change for now.

I'm not aware of any TouchWiz settings that are user-configurable. (I don't want to discount Samsung making configurable options that could be set with the installation of a configuration program.)
Out of curiosity, what do you like about the TouchWiz launcher that you don't want to give up?

I haven't tried dragging and dropping mp3 files directly onto the phone yet but I did try the Samsung Kies software and it worked fine.
Anyone notice the phone getting warmer than usual, not hot but just enough to become uncomfortable, i am coming from a skyrocket and did not have the same issue, i thought the s4 was supposed to run cooler however the lower half of the phone seems to get warm doing very light browsing and sometimes doing nothing at all.

Dragging and dropping works fine on a Windows machine. Android uses the long-standardized MTP protocol on USB but it seems little work went into support because only the Zune really used it. (Even on Windows, there are a few quirks.)
It's an awesome protocol for what it does and it fits nicely with Google's new unified partition model (you like getting upgrades for your phone and not managing storage space, right?), but this is the proverbial broken egg to make that nice Android omelet.

My phone gets warm in bright areas almost certainly as a result of the screen power usage. Is the phone plugged in? It gets warm on the lower half while charging, too.

It's kinda silly, but I like the stock clock and weather on the home screen. I also like some of the widgets, especially the calender. I have purchased several alternative in the past that I could use, but the calender is a biggie for me. I have tried many of them and none of them quite hit the mark, for me anyway.
I have tried many launchers. Go Launcher is the only one I have not played with in depth. I may give it a try tonight. I really like ADWex but the lack of a nice calender bothers me. I used smooth calender with it, but I really like the TouchWiz calender.
Always open to ideas. Thanks.
yea most phones get warm when plugged in but this one seems to be getting warm while not on the charger and also while not being strained too much at all. Maybe i got a lemon but id like to hear other owners experiences. I will be exchanging it regardless but when you pay this much stupid issues like that should be resolved before launch.

Go to android.com/filetransfer/ and download the app. Open the app, then connect your phone to your mac. Bring down the notification bar and click on the USB connection. Change it to connect as camera and it will work. You'll then have access to the internal filesystem as well as the sd card.

the flip side to that, is it is very thin towards the bottom, the heat has to escape some type of way tho. It is a powerful core in a very thin body.

LOL TBH, my phone hasn't gotten any type of hot. However, I've been swamped with homework so I havent been able to superuse it (pun intended ) quite yet.

Hello Folks!
I just picked up a Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight. It's a sweet little device. But I'm addicted to rooting and loading custom ROMs on all of my tablets. So I'm tempted to do that to my Nook Simple Touch. However, doing that to an e-ink device is fundamentally different than on all of my other LCD-screen tablets because most apps/interfaces aren't geared toward an e-ink display.
So... I'd like to ask a couple questions:
What drove you to change your Nook Simple Touch from stock to custom ROM?
What functions do you love best about having it custom?
Do you miss anything about having it stock?
What do you like least about having it custom?
Thanks in advance for your input!

Being able to checkout library books right on the NST - no more PC download, plug the NST into the PC and copy the book to the NST.

Does your library supply DRM free ebooks, or have you found something that works with Adobe Digital Editions DRM?

Less tidy than stock.
FYI, I used NookManager.

They are DRM books. There are a couple of readers you can install that do ADE DRM. I used Aldiko for a while until someone pointed out a working version of Overdrive Media Console. See this thread. I believe Mantano also does ADE DRM. Search the forum for a working version.

Ah, sorry, I didn't make myself clear; even the stock Nook reader does ADE DRM, once authorised by the Windows ADE application (Aldiko can authorise itself, if a valid Adobe ID is supplied to it and it has Internet connectivity). My library supplies .acsm files which contain a link to the actual epub, which then needs to be authorised by the Windows ADE application before it can be copied to the Nook and read. So without something on Android to parse .acsm files and authorise the epubs, I can't download directly on my Nook. If you've got a solution to that, I'd be very interested in hearing it!

Yup, as I said no more PC download and copy to the NST. Both OMC & Aldiko launch the browser from within the app and allow you to browse the library, checkout books and download them directly on the NST. They take care of parsing the acsm file, getting authorization and downloading the actual epub file. It still baffles me why we have to root to get this feature as this has been available on Android phones for years. It makes no sense for dedicated reading devices not to have the feature. Its probably marketing morons at B&N that don't want you to have an easy way to read books for free so you'll buy from them.

Aha, yes, I see now I've tried it in Alidko! My library isn't on Overdrive, but adding it as a catalog to Aldiko works. The only snag appears to be that the browser doesn't handle deeply-nested web sites terribly well, and begins ignoring clicks on links after a few levels. But it'd do in a pinch. Thanks!
Will using a Custom ROM improve the terrible battery life?
I am being abit vague, I bought the Nook Simple Touch and on the box it said 'Battery lasts 2 months with wifi off and 30 minutes reading per day'. I hardly ever read and I only bought this for my holiday and also got it for £29. I charged the NST up and ive noticed over a week the battery has completely diminished.
Wifi is off and ive done no reading. All the decide seems to do is change pictures on the screen saver all the time.

Short answer: Yes.
Slightly longer answer: You can keep stock rom but rooting and tweaking makes a big difference. Changing the kernel and setting the cpu frequency using setcpu so improves battery life alot. Stop things syncing improves battery life alot.
If you don't want barnes and noble stuff (if your using say cool reader) then even more so.
Remember don't switch NST fully off it actually chews more battery than you think in that mode.
Also don't force nst to go asleep by pressing power button just let it timeout into screensaver.
I think remember someone said somewhere with everything tweaked the unit dropped 1 or 2 percent per day when not used.
That's odd that your battery experience has been so poor. I just got my NSTG on Monday and I've been reading on it a lot, plus I have backed it up, installed a new ROM, wiped it, restored it, probably five times now just messing around. I keep going back to stock ROM.
Anyway, I charged it Monday and I've got 84% battery left. I know I've spent several hours reading and at least a couple hours reading with the glowlight on. So for me, that's pretty darn good battery life to have only used 16% in five days of heavy use. Sure that won't last me the 2 months that they're quoting but, I'm not using it 30 minutes a day, I'm using it much more.

I have also just bought one so I can't claim any expertise, however, this sounds odd. I just let mine go to sleep and it always shows the same picture of trees. If yours is changing its picture then it must have something running to do so which will run the battery down.
Perhaps someone with more knowledge can say why yours is doing this?

Yeah, the stock browser sucks. Then again, pretty much every browser I've tried on the NST works poorly. I believe you can use another browser to download the ACSM file and then go into Aldiko and import it. Not as seamless but may make navigating your library site possible.
Well I've been on holiday this week and I can say the battery life is terrible. I must of used it 2 or 3hours per day reading only 400 pages and after 6 days the battery went flat. Luckily I don't read all the time, I kinda envy kindle owners for the battery life

I've never had a battery drain problem so I can't give you any solutions. I see a good 3 or 4 weeks or more with the kind of usage you describe. You might want to read through this thread on possible battery drain solutions. Also, do a search on battery in this forum for some other threads.
I use my rooted NTS with XCSoar when I fly on glider.
It's very useful because contrast on the sunlight is awesome.
I use all fiches from custom rom:
FastScreen
UsbHost
UsbSound

Note that Barnes & Nobles' stated life of 2 months is only for half an hour of reading per day. So your 6 days is the equivalent of somewhere between 24 and 36 B&N days. More if you turn lots of pages.
I found this model can be purchased for aliexpress.

get it from eCrater.com from Tech Direct i believe it's called... it will be $177 total (including shipping) but i got mine in 3 days.... I ordered Thursday of last week Very good seller
I have been emailing manufacturer's because they are apparently working on software to use with the device to pair to the phones. There are no current apps that utilize call handling from Phone to Watch so the device is more of a standalone device for now. Plays videos, good camera, touch functionality is good, it got a little bit hot while i was runing ADW launcher so i uninstalled that... stock launcher runs fine. Charges fast - FM radio feature is pretty damn cool however you have to use stock headphone it comes with as antenna, they plug in via micro usb. Overall great build quality... Looks like an HTC One LOL
Looks good

In the video, the person said that the battery will last 1 and 1/2 days. (Not a China dude but I still understand their Singlish)
Btw the battery life is probably the same for other similar smart watches unless they have battery tweaks like the Qualcomm toq and the pebble smart watch which reduces or fully disables touchscreen and colour
Well the battery life i don't know because i haven't killed it yet..... The battery meter goes up and down QUITE a bit though so i can't get a real good read on the battery gauge, which is kind of frustrating...
So far i've rooted and changed the boot animation with rom toolbox pro. I cannot get the stock lock screen clock and launcher to go away tho, even after changing the filenames in /System/App which leaves me boggled. I am running ADW and a large digital clock on my homescreen and would rather unlock to that then the analog clock.
If you guys are interested, i did a quick review of the watch i will upload to youtube tonight and make new thread with video

What are its capabilities as far as connecting to a phone
Short review
I just received mine in the mail and must say, I'm pleasantly surprised. Build quality is excellent. The screen is bright and hires enough to be able to read everything. Wifi is stable and quite good, in contrary top most other China devices I have (mostly JXD). Of course the keyboard is a bit cramped and hitting the right letter is a gamble but the screen is sensitive and it doesn't take a strong touch. The interface is very smooth and responsive. I have installed a few apps which work well. The only thing that keeps crashing is Skype, which is weird as it came with the watch. There seems no way to use Google Now either (it keeps crashing) which is a pity as I don't want to even think about searching with the on-screen keyboard. The loudspeaker is okay (not great). I haven't tried using it to call anyone yet, that will be next on my list. I just noticed that the watch doesn't take micro sim cards. That quite surprising for such a small device. Now I'll have to go out and buy a regular sim card. I'm not a big fan of adapters.

It looks like a nice device I'm torn between buying this watch or just waiting around for the kickstart project Neptune Pine. Which seems to be a much more polished product
I'm also thinking about getting this or the neptune but the Pine looks so big it will make my already small wrists tiny!
I like the idea of the Pine but think I might go for the ZGPAX....

The thing is that its recognized by bluetooth as a phone so there is file transfer capability but not call handling or notification handling until the manufacturer releases an app to provide support for this... I would advise anyone who purchases to try and contact the manufacturer and get this info. Ive been looking a week now for an app in the store but have found nothing.
