could someone explain/help with nand kernal fail? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hello. I had made a backup of my previous ROM via CWM and then flashed a new ROM. I decided i didn't like the new ROM so i went into CWM to restore the phone back only to get "nand kernal fail" in red letters. I know how to recover from this and i have done so but the backups i made (all 3) all yield the same results when i try and restore them.
Can someone tell me if its possible to recover the files and restore them to my phone, also maybe explain why this happens in the first place? I've already did a search and came across a couple results but nothing like how it happened after doing a restore point via CWM. Any info or help would be greatly appricated.

just restore your backup !!
and immediately flash tytung's r14 kernel after that !!
may help !!

Thanks for the tip. I did try that but it didn't work. The only way I'm able to recover from this is if i reflash cwm and then reinstall magldr, then reinstall my ROM. I just hate that i can't recover the backups i had because it was a lot of work getting my phone just how i wanted it.

nandroid will not restore

Hi all
I have flashed DamageTrev ROM.
It is going great... NOW
But I had to do a lot of flashing to fix my PRI issue..
I found out I could not restore any of my past nandroid backups!
In the recovery bootscreen .. I can start the restoring but then it would error out very quickly .
I will need to have faith in nandroid if I want to do more flashing!
Anybody have any suggestions on how to fix ?

sounds like bad sd card or it is going bad. take everything off of it, partition it, then put it back see if that works
Ive had this happen to but it usually says to type something in console instead and it usually works for me....try again and see if it gives you the console command...if not then its prob what the above said.

What does the error say? Does it mention running nandroid-mobile.sh from ADB? If that is the case you can still restore the backups. This happened to me and I just had to do it once from ADB and then it worked from recovery again.
Whenever mine does that, I plug in the USB cable and just try to restore one more time, and it works. Kind of odd...
When this has happened to me, I've take all the back ups out of my nandroid folder and left them on the computer leaving only the one I want to restore

Won't boot in what way? Can you get into fastboot and/or recovery? Since you're asking about CWM, I'm assuming you can get into it.
If you did a Nandroid backup (the main point of CWM for me), you could try just restoring it. If you didn't, I'd try a wipe all settings and then reboot. You should be able to get back to a virgin state on the main OS that way.
I can get into it, the problem is i erase all data on my phone. Thanks in advance!
???
Is there any way i can get my phone back up and running restoring everything from clockworkmod?

I'm still confused what your problem is.
You say the phone won't boot, but then you talk about erased data.
What exactly did you do to the phone? What was the last few things you did before you "broke" it?
What happens when you try to boot the phone (ie., it's powered off and you press the power button)? How far in the boot process does it go?
If your problem is that the phone boots but all your data is gone, there's no way to get back unless it auto-syncs down from Google, or you used a backup program like Titanium, or you made a nandroid backup in CWM.
If you made a nandroid, you should just be able to boot into CWM, select backup and restore and then restore your backup.
This is what happened....
I tried to replace my fonts in system that are supposed to work on a different phone. Then when i tried to boot up the phone was stuck on the silver google logo. Now, after that i went into clock work recovery and formated everything in the mounts and storage menu. After reinstalling the phones boot img, my phone freezes at the google logo. I can still get into the clockworkmod recovery. I never backed it up, but tried to use a nandroid someone posted online but i get a md5 mismatch.
Again, thank you for all your help!

Known issue. There is a thread in the Development section(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884499). The OTA "broke root."
Ouch. Now I understand.
In the future, always make a nandroid backup before messing around with things, easiest way to recover.
I see you're looking for help in this thread. Maybe they can help you.
You could also try flashing Doc's or Paul's roms also in that section.
rom
I tried that custom rom... still didnt work. Im going to give it another shot!

Did you wipe/factory reset before attempting to install? I realize that you're pretty much wiped at the moment, but always best to start with that.

You've tried another NAND backup, besides the one that MD5 mismatched, yar? Be careful not to rename it, as that can cause the mismatch.
Nope
Nope i didnt try any...
Do i have to rename it to update.zip?

The custom rom? No, you just go into recovery, wipe/factory reset, install from SD card, then navigate to where you put the .zip on the SD card.
I see you did try the 2.3.1 NAND backup in the development section. Try downloading it again on your PC, unzip it, then place the new folder on the clockworkmod's backup folder on your SD card. Again, do not rename it.
Im trying it now.

Be warned that if you do get the NAND to restore, you may lose clockwork recovery. I know I did when I first tried to use it.
Don't panic though, because you can fastboot flash clockwork back on from the bootloader.

[Q] Not able to restore new backups?

Hey guys so I have a weird problem.
I can't restore my new backups.
That means all backups I did 2 weeks ago are restorable but now, when I do a backup of my current cyanogenmod rom and try to restore it, I get stuck at the HTC boot screen.
I heard it's because I used rom manager and sometimes rom manager destroys the PC10IMG, is that true??
Same thing happened to me. I had to do everything all over again. It will be nice if there is some more information about the problem. Thank you.

don't trust rom manager to perform recovery operations through its gui with any consistency.
if you're going to perform a recovery operation, just do it through CWM and save the hassle.
Well I did it all /backups & recovery/ through CWM and just hang on the welcome screen. Not that it was important because I only wanted to back up something I forgot after intending of installing a new rom, but still the question remains and it will be helpful for future time
I've found that Nandroid backups are unreliable if I'm at all low on free space on the SD Card. Even if there are no errors during the backup. I make sure I've got at least room for two whole backups now. Seems to solve the problem.

Help with CWM Restore!

Hi,
Sorry if this has been answered already but I did search the forum and couldn't find an answer.
So 2 days ago I got into flashing my Sam GS2, I followed the instructions completely, I made a NAND backup of my current ROM.
I used ROM manager to install Cyanogen nightly ROM build 75, which I liked a lot but the camera didn't work and realised after it was a test build, so decided to go back to my current ROM. I went into CWM recovery and restored, within 5 mins I was back to like nothing happened.
I then download VillanROM 3.0, again a few bugs so I decided install TK ROM 3.6 I never restored to backup this time as I thought that wasn't necessary, but when I now restore my backup through CWM I get my settings but not my data?
Why is this? The backup file is still there and the same size as before, have I done something wrong?
The reason why I restored was after finding that TK ROM was a stable ROM I forgot to back up my GO SMS settings and Smart keyboard pro settings so I wanted to back up to SD card, re-install the apps and then just restore the settings, now it looks like I won't be able too.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Me for one fails to understand the problem .
jje
Well short version.
I did a NAND backup so I could go back to original ROM just incase things went pair shaped, I managed to restore to it after first flash, then on the 3rd time after realising that I forgot to back up certain app settings, I restored the NAND it does it reboots but only with settings and nothing else.
Can you help?
A failed nandroid restore looks to be a corrupt backup .
jje
Well I thought as much, thought I was doing something wrong.
Just have make sure I do 2 backups next time.
Thanks for the reply.

[Q] "com.google.process.gapps message wont dissapear

Hi everyone! I recently decided to install the 4.4.2 rom on my Galaxy Note 3 N9005 and I didn't like it because it obviously was buggy as ,entioned in the thread. So I wanted to go back to my nandroid backup which I had made before installing the rom. It all went right in CWM and no errors, so I rebooted my phone and got stuck at the glowing samsung logo, so after many fixes and things I tried which didn't work I flashed a pre-rooted stock rom for it and it all went well. I managed to restore to my nandroid finally and then I unlock my phone to find a "com.google.process.gapps has been stopped" message which wont go away when I tap "OK". It just comes back and gives me one second untill it comes back again. I really need help since I need my phone for work, I have tried reinstalling all the gapps, wont work, I have tried reflashing the stock rom and restoring my nandroid again, I have tried deactivating "Downloads" in the app manager but that wont fix it either and finally I have tried clearing the "app data" for all my apps but again, no luck. If anyone would be able to help me I would appriciate it very much. Thanks in advance!
You're probably gonna have to go back to complete stock. Grab your stock image and flash via odin, boot it up and see if it gives you the error without installing custom recovery and your backup. That way you'll know where the error lays.

Forgot to mention but when I return to complete stock there isn't such a message, only when I restore to my nandroid. I also tried restoring from an older backup which I had made like 2 months ago and the same problem remains, "com.google" message is still there. Any suggestions or should I just start over?

Sounds like a dodgy backup or it somehow got corrupted, I'd start over to save any headaches for future reference -- It's a headache I know, but safer I think. You could hang five, see if anyone else chimes in with any other ideas though

A nandroid backup is simple but monolithic. Most people also use Titanium Backup for the ability to restore selective stuff, or to restore to a completely different model of phone.
I had same issue
Bith titanium and nandroid restore.
Well only way to save your self. Completing wizard of first startup with feeling google..
And just restore user apps and data with titanium except google stuff..
This is the only healthy restore method so far i know that gapss.com keeps kool

So I somehow managed to go to settings and disable Play Services with the one second time line that I had before the message appears again, and the message stopped. So it must be something with Play Services. Since i'm new to android (and the Note 3 is my first android phone) I want to ask if there is a way to maybe reinstall Plaay Services?

Hi, there! I just got almost the same issue like you. Once update to custom 4.4.2, any nandroid backups which worked right before getting GAPPS' FC constantly. :crying: Try double wipes, flash 4.3 gapps full package, stop&restart android download, uninstall google play store update, etc. nothing can fix it. Only way stop the popup error, is flash stock rom. But, consequently, lose root access, even with the same method that rooted the stock rom before. I'll heard some guy said the 4.4.2 has different partition from 4.3 or older android rom. But don't mention how to restore the old partition way. So, hope anyone can help us out, thanks a lot.
