Can someone help me downgrade my device? Its a mt4g. Ive looked at the guides and I dont understand them... Maybe downgrading for dummies?
The downgrade guides out there are already as simple as they could possibly be.
Using them involves a lot of cutting and pasting and not much more.
If that's over your head (and no offense if it is....most people would be intimidated by something that has the potential to kill their expensive phone) you should probably step away from the modding process and enjoy your phone as stock.
What exactly do you need help with, Like the post above states, this is not easy stuff, so you may want to leave your phone stock.

I have a G1 that I love and except for market apps is pretty much stock. I've read the forum but most of the talk is geared for people with more technical skill and knowledge then me so I need some answers in plain english. What would you do with it (including memory cards) to get the most out of the phone and why? Thanks guys!
If you don't know why you should do something - don't do it.
However, there are things you might like to do or want, that requires a rooted phone. If (when) that's the case, this site has very good instructions on how to do that.

I had no technical background before doing anything that is possible with "modding your phone", but I read for weeks till I felt safe enough to do it and now I've taken most of the advantages that the community has brang forward.
I loved this phone before rooting and I love it even more after. I would say research root till you feel like you can take the plunge, if you dont feel comfortable, dont do it. Just my .02
if you have no technical brackground and woul like to root your phone there is an app now that does it with very little user input. there are all kinds of great things you can do with this phone and i am not gonna tell you that you should or have to do any of them, but odds are there is going to be something that you find that makes you go "damn i wish i had rooted my phone" at that poing in time you can go find the "app that roots your phone" (search that on the main dream forum or in the development subforum and you will find it) and then you will be able to do just about whatever you want with your awesome phone.
as a warning i would suggest that before you do anything on your phone you should read the entire thread or article about the modification, and read al user comments, that way you are familiar with what to do if you mess something up.
tell me like the must haves and must do's please? id like to experience and utilize the phone to the most of its ability
thanks
If you read thru android development section you'll find a lot of great things you can do with your evo
to get the FULL potential your probably going to want to do a full root(root - giving you Superuser/"Administrative" rights) to your phone allowing you to flash new roms(ie. android 2.2 and now even Ubuntu from what i've been reading which i plan on doing) remove crapware, add wireless tethering(wireless hot spot) free like its supposed to be and a whole lot more which you will have to read to find out
If this is your first time ever flashing ANYTHING don't be scared the developers really make sure to keep everything very safe to your device, if they didnt this forum would probably be a complete mess with "wtf did u do to my phone" type threads.
but again if this is your first time flashing anything just read and take as much info in as you possibly can follow the instructions in the forums and enjoy

thanks alot man i appreciate it
Hey i'm a new guy to the whole rooting scene, and i have a bunch of questions. I have a Vibrant, and the only real reason i see for me rooting is so that i can get froyo ASAP, because being with T-mobile i've realized that we always get all the updates late. Other than that what other reason would there be to root? I read the whole Q+A and watched the videos and blogs and read all these posts on how to root the phone, and what rooting is, but my question is what happens after that? Everyone is talking roms and black market apps, and froyo how would i put any of that stuff on my phone once i've rooted, and what, if anything, is there to put on the vibrant since it's such a relative new phone. As you can tell i'm lost in the sauce and having spent a little over $2000 in the last 14 months on cellphones (Long story, just know i left android with my g1 and went windows mobile a few times, worst damn mistake ever windows phone's blow!!!!), and finally found one that i can stomach without wanting to smash it against the wall, i would hate to do something stupid and be out another phone. Is rooting even for me? I really just want less crapware, no adds, and a little faster performance thru froyo HELP!!! and i don't really speak too much computer talk, i'm an accountant not a progammer. and answers would be very helpful. i'm so confused right now!!!
P.S if i root, can i get rid of all this crapware that t-mobile has on this phone, and if so, how? And
I would try to learn a whole lot more on my own before even thinking about rooting. You can really mess things up if you don't know what you're doing.

Read the first post of the tips and tricks thread at the to. It should clear this up for you. If not, ask a question AFTER reading that post.
To clarify things: "Rooting" does not give you access to loading custom ROMs. Rooting only gives you administrative permissions to do more things with your phone and access to apps on the market that require root access.
Froyo is not out on custom ROMs for Vibrant yet (don't ask for ETAs either). Some other reasons to root as I mentioned above is to gain access to apps that require root access.
Yes rooting can help you get rid of the bloatware. To gain access to flash custom ROMs, you need to do it thru Clockwork's Recovery, but there aren't any custom ROMs available YET.
Would you dismantle the engine under the hood of your car if you don't know what the parts are?
If you have to ask such basic questions after reading the FAQs, etc., rooting is not for you.
When i run Rommanager it says an error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands.... what do i do ??
try visionary again, temp root, then permroot and restart the phone to make root stick
Side note:disclaimer:
My advice (without trying to hurt anyone's feelings too much) is DON'T ROOT. I would suggest you familiarize yourself with everything (Linux, ADB, XDA) before diving in head first.
Despite popular belief, having root does NOT in fact make you cooler.
Way too many new users are trying to root because they think it's cool or heard it's cool. You need to learn your device first.
If you don't know how to perform a Nandroid backup, or restore a previous ROM backup, flash updates, install custom ROM's etc, then you should NOT root. You should browse the forums here, read everything until you know it well. Google search related topics. Exhaust all available avenues, then ask questions. After you've executed all of these options you might consider rooting and starting to tinker with your device.
im noob to the MT4G iv rooted many htc phones i had an add up on c-list to do but now im trying to to the MT4g and im very new to it. I want to root my MT4G because i want to customize my themes splash screen ect.. oh and cuz its COOL TOO

DOUBLE SIDE NOTE:
Thank you for saying that.... I do all the time... rooting should only be done after massive research, research and then when you think you've done all the research in the world... squze in a little bit more research
The reason why phones don't come rooted and why their getting harder to root is because of all the people that don't do their research go and destroy their phones, then try to return them as a manufacture defect...
If you were in a phone manufacture shoes you wouldn't wanna pay for those phones either...

No problem pack. Just trying to lend some helpful advice to people before they go and screw up their phones then cry for help. Makes things easier on us as well.

Ah-Men! Its seems as though google (or anyother search engine) just sends people to this website when the query "how can I try and be cooler" is entered. So therefore no research is done resulting in bricked devices and price increases and diffuclty rooting future devices and forum clogging and thermonuclear war and all around causing me to have a bad day. </end rant\>
Wow you people like to cry I was just asking for help you guys are turning this post in to a thred of crap

Hi guys,
I have been looking into the rooting/flashing process a bit, and it seems pretty straight forward for the most part. The primary reason that I have not followed through yet is the tiny fear that I will ruin my phone. The video (and forum thread) tutorials make it seem pretty easy, though, and there are not a lot of points where it seems like something could go wrong.
At which steps is bricking really a potential risk? There were a couple of points during the rooting process where it seemed like typing the wrong commands in terminal could result in some troubles. I have not looked as deeply into the flashing process, so I am unsure if there are more risks there.
Furthermore, is it possible to "unbrick" a mytouch 4g? I did a quick look around the forum and found what seemed to be threads discussing unbricking other phones. Once a mytouch 4g is bricked, is it basically completely and irreversibly useless?
Finally, I was also wondering if this process would eventually be even simpler than it is now. Like I had said, it already seems somewhat straight forward. If this is about as easy as it gets, then there really isn't any incentive to wait. If, however, many of these devices get even simpler solutions down the road, I might hold off.
Thanks,
Neel
Flashing hboot can brick the phone, but that step is no longer necessary. I would imagine the gfree changes could corrupt the radio if something were to potentially go wrong there, and from what I understand the radio is what boots the phone.
If you can't boot into hboot, I believe at this point in time the phone is unrecoverable.

Thanks for the reply. That is definitely something I will keep in mind as I continue to research the process.
I don't think there will be easier process to root MT4G, it's not as simple as, let's say, G1 or Magic, back in the day. However, current process is simple enough where most, if not all, can do it. My personal suggestion is to use ADB for most of the process and copy/paste all critical commands (like the one for writing hboot what not). This way you can be sure that nothing was mistyped (yeah, VKs are great but not THAT great).
Also, folllow only 1 guide. There people that try to follow a guide, something goes wrong and they jump to another guide... and another guide and then we see a thread with something along the lines of:
Help!!!! I was following all these guides and I dont know what I did but my phone wont boot past MT logo. I think I ran Visionary and then I did that DD thing, can anyone tell me how to fix my phone!!!!

Other then that... kudos for doing research and good luck.

Thanks for the tips. I had been focusing on two of the video tutorials out there (both of which referenced the thread here), but I will probably end up reading the whole thread and going off of that before attempting to root.
