[Q] C Spire Milestone X help - Droid X General

I have rooted my phone and use droid 2 bootstrap loader to put Clock work mod on it. I wanted to put cm7 on it so i edited the assert kernal command as brickster had said on a previous post and now it boots up and freezes at the red M screen. I can boot into the stock recovery but not Clock work mod. What should I do?

I had the same issue and can tell you now whatever you do, don't flash the sbf supposedly for our phones. It will brick it and you will have to do a warranty exchange.
If you have adb set up on your computer, connect the phone and boot into stock recovery. Open up cmd and navigate to the phone and type "adb reboot recovery" (no quotes) to see if that helps. You did backup with nandroid I hope?
Sent from my Milestone X using xda premium

Yes I did a nandroid backup. Thanks I'll try that.

For some odd reason my computer isn't picking up my phone even though it did a few hours ago when i went into stock recovery. Maybe i need to find and reinstall the adb drivers

Ok here's what you have to do. Don't go into stock recovery at all. If you do your computer won't recognize you plugged your phone in. Instead just let it sit with the red M then plug your phone into your computer. It will then see your phone and you can use adb to issue the command "reboot recovery" it will then go into CWM.

Awesome man, that's definitely good to know when I get the itch to try a custom rom again. I'd just like to know why we're not able to flash any roms without these issues.
Sent from my Milestone X using xda premium

It's because we started out with 2.3.5 in our phone. Most people on this forum started out with 2.2. I also can't install the update.zip that's supposed to put it back to normal because I started with 2.3.5

[Q] Need help with semi/soft brick!

So my Vibrant has been turning off randomly. I think its because of the loose battery or maybe it's just over-heating. But a few days ago, after turning it on there is only a black screen and lit capacitive buttons at the bottom.
It boots up normal, with the vibrant name, t-mobile animation, and the Galaxy S boot animation, then black screen! This started to happen after a few reboots, and now it won't rebbot properly, just black screen. It seems like I have to restore my phone, but the problem is I cannot get the phone into recovery or download mode! Please advise.

First of all, there's no such thing as semi brick, there's brick or not. Try installing your Rom again..
Dan0zone don't be rude man,.backup your apps, enter recovery more delete all user data, if after that you have the same problem restore, or keep trying to enter download mode, try different methods

Do this bro... just tested it myself, works fine...
get adb installed on your computer, should already have it if your rooting but if not get it, youll find it in the stickied thread for informative links in the development section.
get a cmd prompt open on your computer and type in
>adb devices
let it start up deamon and it will tell you device not found, its ok.
now type and have ready...
>adb reboot recovery (do NOT press enter yet)
start your phone like normal. before its even finished with the boot up tmobile animation and the galaxy s (but after the plain vibrant text/picture) logo press enter. if it says error: device not found then wait all the way till galaxy s only you did it too early...
screen will go black and reboot into standard recovery... hope to goodness you had a working clockwork recovery installed and nandroid ready for this next part...
go down using your volume keys and select reinstall packages using the power key
now in clockwork recovery go down to nandroid
now go to restore
go to your earliest back up and restore it.
there you go.
I would start fresh get odin set up and reinstall the original rom at this point as something may still be corrupted, reroot, install latest clockworkmod, latest vibrant 9 rom (im using and see no bugs and runs better then the vibrant 6 rom i had) and DONT install the lag fix until the newest "TRUE" lag fix comes out with the new file system and kernel that JAC is working on and has almost ready.
good luck and pm me if any of these steps need further explanation.
Pypanys thanks for that post, I learn something new but he said its bootsup normally, but it goes to a black screen after the boot logo he can enter recovery mode, same thing happen to me. hes just stated man that he cant even get into recovery, my guess is hes locked out using the volume up/down keys like many new phones are (which btw is a known defect, spend 10min on the phone with tmobile doing thier trouble shooting to show them it doesnt work and they send you a replacement..) sooooo I gave him a way to get into recovery without the buttons and not having to wait till he gets to a black screen where possibly its frozen and he cant use adb commands.
I was just making mention to you also that he cant even back stuff up NOW (hopefully he already archived all his apps and data) and hes better off starting fresh since hes getting problems using his current rom/lagfix....
Thanks for the quick reply p()()pypants, but i will have to try your method later. It's late and I have class (college) tomorrow, but i will post my results soon. Thank you again.
Edit 1:
Btw, is there a way to back up my current rom? Like the way rom manager back up roms? I know my current rom works before so that's why I want to back it up.
Edit 2:
Actually i did not use adb to root my phone, just used the one click method. So can you please give me more detailed instructions on how to install/use adb?
Okay, I typed in "adb reboot recovery" and press enter as my phone booted up during the t-mobile animation and at the Galaxy S boot animation. Neither time work. Then I reentered it again after the black screen. That did not work either. CMD keeps on returning "error: device not found" and the phone stays on with the black screen.

Do you have the right drivers installed? You can check here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
Another very stupid question, just to cover all bases - your phone is plugged into the computer, correct? When you install the new drivers, try plugging the phone into a different USB port on the computer than you've been using, so it will hopefully pick up the new drivers without much extra effort.
If that doesn't help, just keep trying the command while the phone boots up. Maybe you'll get lucky and it will work. Sorry I don't have any real solution for you :\
I'm fairly sure I have the right drivers, otherwise I wouldn't be able to root in the first place. Yes, the phone is plugged in also. I'll try a different USB port and see what happens...
Update: Trying different USB ports does not help.

How to boot into Clockwork Mod Recovery from Power Off

I've had a Droid Incredible (AMOLED) for sometime, Unrevoked Forever. Flashed many, many ROMs and kernels, and numerous recovery backups.
Picked up a Droid X yesterday (still have my Dinc). Rooted using Z41, and have permanent root. Paid for and downloaded Bootstrap, and had ROM Manager from my Dinc.
I've spent a good six hours reading the various "how to" threads and Googling, but I'm not finding the solution to my issue.
I can boot into Clockworkmod Recovery from within Bootstrap.
But, I cannot figure how to boot into Clockworkmod Recovery from power off state. When I hold the Home button while powering up, hitting the Search button boots my DX into the stock recovery, NOT Clockworkmod Recovery.
I guess my question is, how / is it possible to make Clockworkmod Recovery the default recovery when booting from power off?
Looking forward to getting to know the DX community on XDA.
To boot into clock work from power off...hold vol down then press power. Hold about 10 seconds. You should be good to go...

That is the method on the Dinc, which I'd tried. But, just now did it and released the power button after the Moto logo appeared and continued to hold the vol down, and there was the familiar Clockworkmod Recovery glowing green.
Old habits.
Thanks!
Cool, glad it worked. Was not sure about the exact timing though!

Well, so I flashed a ROM (ApeX 1.3 which runs well), but once again I can boot into Clockworkmod Recovery via Bootstrap, but cannot (or have not found a way) boot into Clockworkmod Recovery from power down, even using the above method that worked with the rooted stock .340.
Not a biggie unless something bad happens, of course.
Thoughts? The ROM? Me?

From Koush's website:
What if my phone won't boot? How do I get into recovery without the app?
When the hijacker runs, it will automatically create the "/data/.recovery_mode" file after it finishes. This tells the system that the next time it boots, it should boot into recovery. But, when the system starts, the Droid X Recovery Bootstrap will then delete that file when Android is fully started, to prevent you from booting into recovery. So what does this mean? If you fail to boot, simply pull your battery, and your next boot will be into recovery (unless your /system is *really* hosed, in which case you need to SBF).
I'd probably just press bootstrap recovery in the app every time you turn your phone on. So just in case you DO need it next time you boot up, it'll be there. Damn moto and their locked phone..

That doesn't do it either. Must be the custom ROM.
Somewhat OT, but you're right about the "damn Moto and their locked phone." Coming from the Dinc, I'm not accustomed to this sort of hassle. Having said that, altho I've only had the DX for a couple days (and still have my Dinc), I am liking the big screen, albeit not as nice as the AMOLED, and the really solid build of the DX--it's a good phone. Looking forward to the Thunderbolt...

Not through that menu, but using Boot Manager you can dual boot roms. Your base rom must be 2nd init, however.

Having same issue as poster above: Can NOT get into CWM recovery. (Also have Rom Toolbox installed, and I can't get into Recovery via that app, either.)
Running Liquid 3.2, and no matter what I try, I can only get into stock recovery.
EDIT: Was able to get into CWM Recovery from ROM Manager: Select Reboot into CWM Recovery, then hold VOL DOWN button while phone reboots. Voila! (Still doesn't solve original issue, but it's progress.)
i rooted using the terminal method on mac. i cant post a link it wont let me but its on droid life. i cant figure out how to reboot into clockwork mod or stock recovery i want to flash this new liquid rom i downloaded. can someone tell me how to do this or provide a link i can use to help me? thanks.
I also have sbf'd liquid 3.2. I've had a terrible time with the radio. Wifi works, it doesn't. 3G works, it doesn't. Market works, it doesn't. So, I just sbf'd the rom again but the phone is stuck in a boot loop. I need to get into Clockwork to try "wiping", but I can't get in. Seems like it's yet another issue with liquid 3.2. Anybody have any ideas?

I'm unable to boot into Clockword mod recovery as well when I choose to do so from the ROM manager... It just reboots my phone back that's all...
I'm on stock 605 and just rooted my phone - no boot strap or bootloader apps I've installed other than the CWM recovery 5.0.2.0 I installed through ROM manager v4.8.0.6
I'm able to boot into Stock recovery (Search button and then volume keys) but not into cwm recovery....
Any suggestions what I'm doing wrong ? I even tried volume down key during power up - doesnt seem to help. I dont see any blue LED either during the moto logo...
Thanks...
EDIT/UPDATE: I installed the Droid X bootstrap apk, Install bootstrap, and Reboot into recovery and that seemed to start up CWM recovery fine I guess ROM manager was not installing the right CWM boostrap... From the ROM manager I was selecting the Droid X, (had tried Droid X 2nd init as well as Droid 2 - didnt seem to make any difference that time)....
On blur roms you always have to use the Droid 2 Bootstrapper app before flashing ClockworkMod Recovery in Rom Manager.

USB Debugging
I was having a terrible time getting into any kind of recovery, Bootstrap, Rom Manager, etc., that is until I remembered something I read sometime back. I unchecked USB Debugging and then had virtually no problem with getting into recovery mode.
So, having said all that, check to see if your USB Debugging is checked or not. That might make a difference for you.

red triangle with exclamation point on recovery screen

figured it all out.. thanks!
Means you don't have a recovery. Need to most likely run the 2.1 ruu and reroot with eris one click. Something went wrong and it didn't flash Ra recovery
i hope your ok buddy, try it again but check if the root me.zip file is in your sd card first before you go into recovery,if its their it should of flashed the recovery.

thank you. i googled and found instructions for flashing amon ra recovery. but it fails in the first couple steps. when it tells me to run "su" from the shell command it tells me permission denied. the phone is not rooted yet, so i can not allow superuser from the phone as most of my googling has suggested.
what now?
the rootme.zip is on the sd card.
did u reboot after you pressed the button? and then did u turn it off and go to recovery?

That is the splash screen of the stock recovery.
It means that flashing of Amon_RA never happened.
[ For goofs, you can prove it is a stock recovery by pressing Vol-up+End again when that image is on the screen. (If you were rooting a Cupcake Eris, the key sequence would be Home+End) ]
As others have pointed out, the primary reason that OneClick fails is that the person using it fails to perform a normal reboot in between use of the app and cold-booting into the recovery. Just reboot your phone once normally, shut it down, and then cold-boot to recovery.
- install app
- run app
- shut down phone normally
- reboot phone normally
- shut down normally
- cold boot into recovery
One more thing; you know that this is not a development topic, yes?

No solution to this Boot Loop issue!!

No one is able to offer a solution to this issue

Tried to add recovery image no dice...now the phone will only charge and not boot
Just so you know, this belongs in the Q & A section...as it doesn't offer any 'development' of roms, kernels, ect.
Anyways, did you try flashing a boot.img via fastboot?
P.s....prepare to be flamed.

Was a problem a few months back with some users, no solution was ever found. The only thing they were able to do was flash a radio and pull the battery to cause an intentional brick and then have it swapped.
