[Q] Appbrain & Kindle Fire - Kindle Fire General

I installed Appbrain on my Kindle Fire. I can execute and sync with the Market but when I am trying to update something I am getting the following error message: "could not find that app in the amazon appstore for android at this time"
Why it tries to access the Amazon appstore, I want to sync with the Android Market. Any idea?

Any requests by apps/webpages to the Android Market get re-rerouted to the Amazon App Store automatically.
So when an app asks for an update and tries to contact the Android Market, the Kindle Fire automatically redirects it to search the Amazon App store instead, since the Kindle Fire was never intended to use the Android Market.

Any chance I can hack it not to be redirected? I guess somewhere it is hardcoded.

its has to be hard coded somewhere... no chance really until the custom ROMs come out.

You can stop this behavior by removing MarketIntentProxy.apk in /System/Apps/ by either deleting it with ADB or a file manager or freeze the app with TitaniumBackup. You must be root to do this and may need to restart for it to take effect.

Or renamed it

I just gave this a try... I renamed it instead of removing it at first.
I did reboot the device after making the change just to be sure. After the reboot, I first made sure that the normal Amazon stuff still worked. Used temp unroot, used Amazon live, turned root back on, went to the amazon market, got an app, removed the app...
then I went to android market, and then tried an app that has a purchase option that always failed because instead of going to Android market it would always go to the Amazon market instead... Worked!
I most likely will rename it and freeze it with TB...

Way to prevent redirect to Amazon Appstore?

Every time somethink links to the market, something in the Fire redirects to the Amazon Appstore. Anyone know how to break this? I can't change appstore or market defaults in the Application manager.
//Tapatalk.KindleFire//
Not sure if this really helps but you can use Titanium backup to freeze AmazonAppstore, the links should open then.
I'm glad there's a workaround but I'd love a way to make APK's open in android market from browser, and keep amazon market available.

That sounds like it should work. If OP tries this, he should have to option to not set the Market as the default app. If he doesn't, he should be able to select which app he wants to use each time.
Just rename "MarketIntenProxy.apk" to "MarketIntentProxy.apk.bak" that is located in system/app and reboot. Then market links will open the market and not Amazon's app store

I got Dropbox installed on Kindle Fire

Credit goes to -apocryph dot org
You know what this means don't you! You can add movies and yes apps from the Google android market into your DropBox and install them on the kindle without rooting the device. YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
I have about about 595 apps available.
How To- install on Kindle Fire
I just my new Kindle Fire, which runs a modified Android Gingerbread. One of the ways the Kindle Fire is different from most Android devices is it does not have the Google Android Marketplace; instead apps must be obtained through Amazon’s own app store. As of this writing, the DropBox app is not available in the Amazon App Store, but I was able to get it installed on my Kindle Fire anyway with the following steps:
Click the gear icon in the top-right corner of the Kindle Fire home screen to activate the Settings window
Click More
Scroll down to Device
Scroll down to ‘Allow Installation of Applications from Unknown Sources’ and move the slider from ‘Off’ to ‘On
You’ll be prompted to confirm you mean to do this; you agree
Switch to the Kindle web browser and go to dropbox dot com/android (NOTE: the ‘https‘ is important!), and click Download App. This will download the Dropbox.apk file
When the download is finished you’ll see a notification in the top left corner. Click it and scroll down to the notification that the download of the Dropbox.apk file is complete. Click the file.
You will be prompted to install the application. Click the button
Once installation is completed, start the Dropbox application and log in.
Done!
Is it possible to change the homescreen via this method?
Would be wonderful to do that without rooting
Also, do I HAVE to root to get full marketplace?

No, I'm afraid not.
I fail to see how these directions are any different than sideloading apps since day one.

You're right, there is nothing new here. And the fact that someone loaded "dropbox" doesn't give them access to the Google Android market. One has nothing to do with the other. Worthless thread.
LOL quit crushing the poor guys dreams!
no its not nothing new but rather then finding the dropbox.apk you can simply get it from their actual website.
thats cool! i have swype on mine!
I thought we learned about this weeks ago, I never thought I would say it but xda is turning in to facebook.

This is a worthless thread pretty much since its old news.
However, to let people know more semi-useless info, you can also use box.net which is does the same thing as dropbox, it is also available on the amazon market.
Hate to jump on the "tell me something I don't know bandwagon" but isn't this common sense? Been sideloading apps with dropbox since day one.
Well, till I rooted and set up the Marketplace. So much nicer.

OOh. I found out that if the Kindle fire is off, if you press the power button, it comes back on!!!1! zomgz
Holy **** there are some petty people up in this thread. Seriously, dude shared something that you are free to ignore, or use (couldn't care less if you are so cool that you already knew it), but trying to belittle them for trying to help really shows a lack of character.
And sends a message to others not to bother sharing a find since you're all "too smart to be told nothin".

Looks like dropbox 2.0 is out:
http://blog.dropbox.com/?p=947
Anyone have an apk for that yet? The dropbox website now directs to the Android Market, not the apk.

Just updated via the Android market on all my devices including my KF
If you search for it, Dropbox is now also available in Amazon Appstore. Not updated yet to 2.0 as in Android market though.
600 MB additional free storage
Hi all
Just found a smart way to increase your Dropbox account with 600 MB:
1 Sign into your existing Dropbox account (or create a new account)
2 Goto https://www.dropbox.com/free
3 Follow instructions ... and voila 600 MB additional free storage

Sideloaded books disappear after update

So I got the fire for my sister for Christmas, rooted to install android market, installed apps, games, launcher, sideloaded mobi books and everything was fine. Most of the books showed in documents but the newer ones showed in the books section of the kindle home. After powering back on tonight I received a forced update which removed all the files from the native reader. Anyone know why? I understand its just an eye appealing thing with the shelves and all, and I have fb reader to read them still but would like to have them in the native app as well. The update didn't break root or the market or anything like that. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'm seeing the same sort of behavior -- and now items copied via USB (with and without Calibre doing the work) do not show up -- not in Documents, not in Books.
I can launch the files using ES File Explorer, but that's kind of painful just to switch from one book/story to another.
Amazon support has been no help -- they keep saying "press the Sync button" and "are you connected to Wifi?"
what you need to do is go back into the android market, navigate to the Kindle App, and Select "uninstall updates" What happened is the stock kindle app, which nearly everyone agrees is 100 times better, got replaced by the amazon kindle app that other android devices have to use.
If you side-load from calibre, the steps you need to follow to insure they show up in the stock reader app is shown in this video from cnet
http://howto.cnet.com/8301-11310_39...books-show-up-under-books-on-the-kindle-fire/
I agree that your kindle app got automatically updated I would recommend to se if you can roll back changes. If that is not possible you could download kindle fire update from there website and change it from .bin to .zip and open it and look for the kindle app. If that does not work you can flash the that update by changing it to update.zip and flashing it or putting it in the kindle update. Or you can just simply flash modaco and change the automatic settings on kindle app as you reflash.
Hope this works.

How to hide an update?
I am aware that the kindle app update messes up the books and that uninstalling the update will fix this as i have already done this. Is there a way to hide this update from showing or permanently deleting it from the google play update dir.
What you can do is go to the PLay Store, navigate to the Amazon Kindle app and de-select "automatic updating"
That's not the issue, automatic updating is turned off. When on the play store app if you go to my apps it shows the available updates. I want to hide the kindle app from the update list. Mostly so family and friends stop updating the darn thing then calling me and asking why all the books disappeared.
Tell them not to update it problem solved

[Solved] New Google Play .apk?

Just wondering since Google is updating the android market to a newer version that's all encompassing (music, apps, books, movies) called Google Play, if our rooted KF's are going to see the update OTA or if we'll need to sideload it? If sideloading will be the option, will it be the same as sideloading the current market .apk or will we need to employ new steps? Thx
Here is link to apk from rootzwiki: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/20095-android-market-apk-google-play-3612/

My Kindle Fire (rooted CM9) got the OTA update and it removed my market app and added the play app in its place, i didnt even realize it till a couple of minutes ago lol
I got the "upgrade" the last time i opened the Market. Hadn't heard anything about it prior, so I was kinda freaked out. I didn't know what to do for a second.
Thanks for this, as I got totally screwed by Google on the update. I clicked "what's this?", my web browser opened up, and afterwards my Market icon was gone, as well as the upgrade process. To re-install Market requires a hard reset! Freaking Google. I hate not being in control of my own damn phone.
Works great on the Inspire 4G, thanks
Go into the settings of your phone, then apps (all), then go to the market app.
Do a 'Clear Data' on the Market app.
Next time you start up your Market app you should have to agree to terms, and then the app will update to Google Play.

Nope, wasn't in the list! Totally gone. Good thing the .apk was there above, disguised as a .zip file. Installed fine.
So I was able to install the google play apk on my unrooted kindle fire and I can now browse the market, but the only thing is that it forces close when I try to download app updates or any new apps. Any ideas?
Installed Google Play on my Rooted Kindle fire, running Stock ROM, it had removed the 'MARKET' and added 'Play Store', i guess its the same thing? i dont know the difference? can anyone explain please?
Thanks
They basically just renamed the app from Market to Google Play. Does the same things as before. This is not the first time it has been updated.
On my Rezound phone, I renamed it back to Market and changed the Icon back to the old icon.
**Edit** Just did it to the KF now too. Screen cap of it below:

I'm stuck in this very same loop. I can do everything but download an app or let it try to update an app I have installed. So far, I'm stumped.

Try clearing the cache and data for the app and see if that will help. That's worked for me in the past. Hope this helps.

Apps

Im sure this is a silly question but is there an actual regular app store or do you just have to browse though the panels?
There just doesnt seem to be many apps at all to install I figured there must be some better way of getting them more like playstore.
...
I cant get regular playstore working after following the guide. It either flashes and returns to apps list or occasionally goes to the account details screen but no further.
There's the Amazon app store.

Yes, there are other/new places to look for getting Fire TV apps, but unfortunately because of being new in this forum I'm not yet permitted to place external links in my posts (which would be the easiest way to assist) So, just do search on 'fire tv apps 2014' and/or 'fire tv app options' which will lead to some info that should hopefully help? In addition, I found a few recent and relevant links on the 1st page in a Google search for 'finding apps for fire tv'. But as far as there being a store solely for Fire TV apps, I'm not sure if there is one yet
If you can install from unknown sources, there is 1mobile,appchina,wandoujia,voga360,and aptoide.
You can also use evozi and/or apkleecher to get free apps from the Play Store.
And you can even get your purchased apps by signing up at the Evozi APK Downloader page!

Update: @jarayn informs me that it is not a launchable app.
And just to bring it full circle. The Amazon Appstore comes preloaded on the AFTV. It's just very hidden. This is the location on the latest FW.
Go to: Settings / 4) Applications / Manage All Installed Applications / Apptore ( Just scroll down till you find it & launch)

Are you saying you can open that and actually browse through apps?
What other "treasures" await those poor schmucks or pre-rooted winners who get the latest firmware?

Humn... Didn't try to open it. Guess it is there but everything is dealt thru the UI. Wonder if there is another app to sideload that might act like an actual appstore. No point though....
I side-loaded the regular appstore apk from Play. Kinda messed things up. Had to Unzip Rbox's pre-rooted ROM to retrieve the correct one from Apps. Then had to R/W with Root Explorer to remove the side-loaded one and replace with the correct one.
Be careful messing with AFTV specifc apps.
