I'm pretty interested in rooting my Droid X for things like custom ROMs, themes, and lowering voltage use/underclocking for better battery life. The only thing that's stopping me from doing so was an article I read about how certain apps on rooted phones were displaying passwords as clear text. Now as much as I want to unlock the full potential for my phone, I don't want people being able to access my personal data. My question is can someone access my data on my rooted phone if I have Bluetooth/WiFi/GPS disabled? I don't use Bluetooth devices with my phone, I'm perfectly happy with 3G coverage for my phone's internet uses, and I don't really use the GPS feature.
When you "root" your phone all you're doing is gaining Admin privileges. That being said, even in "un-rooted" environments you can have Apps doing crazy stuff. My best recommendation is know what you're downloading, check reviews.
I am aware that rooting gives super user access and access the root directory, but does that mean that other people can access the root directory on my phone over 3G/Wifi/Bluetooth?

No, you specifically give each app root access when it requests it.
You can then choose to always allow, allow once, or deny.

I used this YouTube video as a guide and it worked perfectly. Read the comments if you have problems.
tht is the one i am using also but it freezes when it says restarting adb and suggestions?
Same problem. Try changing the USB mode to charge only, if you're still having trouble. I just rooted today and I'm trying to learn the terminology for all things root, bootstraps, rooms and the like.
Good luck, and enjoy rooting!
thanks i actually was able to get mine through by closing all programs running and it took about 10 mins to pass. Also does anyone know if it is okay to turn off usb debugging while rooted?

yes, it's perfectly ok to do that.
If you are frustrated with Samsungs total lack of support for this new device let me share with you some solutions that will make you change your mind about how you feel about your new Galaxy Tab WiFy only.
First; Root it!!!
Download the z4Root App and do it with one click........painless and you are set free and on your way.
Second; Download One Click Lag Fix from the Market ,
this is a magical app for this Galaxy Tab , it unlocks its full potential. Thank you Ryan!!! Give him a raise please!
Just make sure BEFORE you run the app move ALL of your apps from the SD Card and place them back on your device, you can move them back to the SD Card after you run the app if you like. If you try and run this app with apps on the SD Card you will send your device into a boot loop so please make note of this.
Result; Snap and Speed Clocked 1900 on Quardrant, smooth scrolling and blazing speed browsing this has become a completely different device , I now love this Galaxy Tab and I am going to keep it!
Doesn't show in the market for me
one click lag fix app
if you search one click lag fix in the Market in comes up as RyanZA OCLF, this is the app you want for a very small price well worth it!
Could not find z4Root in the market but there should be a thread here in XDA or search it on your device and direct download the apk file
It's Wifi, not Wify.
you definitely do NOT need to pay for OCLF. it's widely available for free on the web.
also, i noticed no difference after OCLF (benchmarks don't mean **** for actual device usage), so I uninstalled it.
the app's needed

when looking for One Click Lag Fix search for OCLF
when looking for z4Root search for z4root
PS.... i would post links but cant till i hit the 8 message spam thing ill PM person who started the topic to see if he can include the files

I'm not sure if this really work or is a placebo effect only.
Anyways I try but my P-1010 lost the vibration effect , I uninstall the OCLF and this come back to normal.

oh RIGHT, that's also another reason I un-installed OCLF. losing haptic feedback was a dealbreaker for me.
Do I have to install EXT2 tool?
What is the function of EXT2?
I installed it but could not feel anything special.
WHY!

Tried several versions of z4Root and none seem to work for me - How does one tell if the root was done (took the temporary approach with z4Root v1.3)
I am specifically trying to find the Skype data file to delete so can re-install it
If the rooting is working then I simply can't find the file so missing something
data/data/com.skype.raider

u should be able to go to menu, settings, applications, manage applications then find skype and unistall
but to answear ur question directly when u install z4root and open the app it will say root,
if its already rooted u should see re-root or undo root..
Thanks
After rooting look for Skype to uninstall but not there. The issue is that if installed then uninstalled Skype seems to leave, based on other board comments, that residual Data file and thus can't be reinstalled. My understanding is that once rooted one can then locate that hidden file and delete it so can reinstall Skype but this doesn't seem to be the case, does it? I can't find that file.
When Temp rooted and restart z4Root it does offer an Re-root option so (now using V1.3) it has been rooted.
Perhaps there is a difference in rooting between Temp & Permanent but wouldn't think so
Appreciate your help

You need to be rooted and use an explorer, run a search for Skype and delete everything it finds.

Hi Guys
This is weird. My shiny new Note 3 is about three weeks old. It's working 99.9% perfectly except for a slight sound problem. The problem is that when it is connected to a charging dock it USED to play a tone. Now it just vibrates slightly (but still charges). I also noticed that my camera doesn't make a shutter sound when I take a photo. I wondered whether the two issues are related in some way?.
All other sounds seem to be working OK on the Note3 (so it's not a volume setting) and I have checked whether option for the dock 'making a sound' is switched on. Additionally, there doesn't appear to be an option in the camera settings to switch on/off the sound, so it can't be that.
OK none of this is a major problem, but it is a bit of a niggle!
I hate niggly things! .
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks
You made any changes recently?

Yes, gazillions of changes due to installing apps! Too numerous to narrow it down to a specific action

Do you have these checked files in the screenshot?
Thank you. That looks like a useful screenshot - where do I go to check if the sound file is checked as in your screenshot? I guess thats your file manager isn't it? I'm using ES explorer and the phone isn't rooted. Do you happen to know which folder these sound files live? I did a file search and it couldn't find any of the files shown in your screenshot
Cheers

I use Root Explorer, those files are in system>media>audio >ui.
However, as far as I know you can't access the system folder unless you're rooted, so I think it's unlikely that you've deleted them.

OK case closed - I hard reset the phone, reinstalled all the original apps and the missing sounds are back. Sorted! Bit of a drastic measure though
Still don't know WHY the sound disappeared from just the docking process and the camera shutter, but it least it's all fine now
Thanks for all your help and suggestions.
I just got my first Note series phone. I was wondering if there is anything I should straight delete after turning on the phone for the first time.
Someone said delete the Tmobile app cause it can show you're rooted? I held down and moved it to Remove spot., but does that delete it from the phone?
If anyone knows of any others that would be much appreciated.

No, system apps can't be deleted unless you are rooted. They can be disabled tho, which will remove the icon from the App drawer.
What you did, was just remove the icon from the desktop.
Ahh. Ok, thanks for the response.
I think even though I disabled some of the apps. Some still show up in App drawer. Like Music. I disabled that cause I have 3 freakin different music players. Like why the hell do they do that?
Anyways it's still showing up on my App drawer.
Rooting is really tempting me. Even though this is my first Note and have no experience doing it.

You should try using a different Launcher. Such as Nova or Apex. They have the option of 'Hiding' the icon that you don't want shown in the app drawer. Maybe you should start with that since you are new rooting.
Oh i thought you needed to root to change the launcher. Thanks for that info.

You can completely change the look of your phone without rooting, but you won't be able to do a lot of the things people like to do.
Here is a link to a good article on various launchers: http://www.androidpit.com/what-is-the-best-android-launcher
I really enjoyed Buzz Launcher for a long time, but I'm using Smart Launcher now with Cover Lockscreen on top of it. Can't wait to get my Note 4 and make the big from my Note 2.
Hey I'm new to the forums and new to using Android. I've been trying to dig around to find a way to theme my phone by changing the system sounds and so far it seems like you need to root the phone. I've never really messed with that kind of stuff before and what I've read I can't since I'm on the AT&T network. Is there maybe an alternative way for me to change my system sounds or am I stuck with just changing the ringtone?

Hey mate. If your phone rooted, you can change everything(almost). Try to change system sounds with root explorer. You also can change shutdown animation's sound.

That's the thing is that every where I go everyone says you can't root an AT&T phone so that's why I'm looking for a possible alternative. I tried using an app called Explorer but I can't change anything to the UI folder because its read only.
Edit: phone as in the S6 Edge +
Seems like they haven't found a way around what AT&T did to provent the root process
