Requirements
HTC EVO 4G with the Android 2.3 Gingerbread over-the-air (OTA) update
Windows machine with Internet connection
HTC EVO 4G Gingerbread rooting files — This is a ZIP file containing all drivers, image files, and other files needed for rooting your HTC EVO 4G as described in this guide. Get the file here http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/HTCEvo4G/rooting/rootevo4ggingerbread.zip.
Extract the contents of the ZIP file into a folder on your Desktop. In this guide, we use a folder named “rootevo4ggingerbread” and we suggest that you use the same folder name to avoid confusion.
Uninstalling HTC Sync. The stock HTC Sync software provides handset drivers that won’t work with the rooting method used in this guide. Remove HTC Sync. Install the drivers from HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe, which is included in the HTC EVO 4G Gingerbread ZIP file mentioned above.
Ra Recovery image — The image file is contained in PC36IMG.zip, which you can download from here http://files.androidspin.com/downloads.php?dir=amon_ra/RECOVERY/. Do not extract or unzip the compressed file.
1.Make sure you have extracted the HTC EVO 4G Gingerbread rooting files as described in the Requirements section.
Uninstall HTC Sync from your computer first before proceeding. Install the drivers provided by HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe (included in the HTC EVO 4G Gingerbread rooting files that you downloaded).
The method in this guide will only work with those drivers. You can reinstall HTC Sync after you finish rooting your handset.
Connect your HTC EVO 4G and your Windows computer using a USB cable. Set the connection type as “Charge only.”
Enable USB Debugging mode on your handset. You can do that by going to the Settings>Applications>Development screen and checking “USB Debugging.”
Open a command prompt or terminal on your computer and go to the directory where you extracted the rooting files by using the command cd Desktop\rootevo4ggingerbread and pressing the Enter key.
Invoke ADB to list your device’s serial number. Type adb devices on the command prompt and press Enter. You will see a list of attached devices. Take note of the serial number for your handset. (Another way to find out your handset’s serial number is to pull out the phone’s battery and take a look in the battery compartment. The serial number is printed there and usually starts with the letter “H”.)
Generate a Beta key for Revolutionary: S-OFF & Recovery Tool 0.4pre4. The executable binary file for the tool is already included in rootevo4ggingerbread.zip, but you need a beta key to be able to use the tool.
Generate a beta key for your HTC EVO 4G handset by going to revolutionary.io. Fill in the form with the following information:
Your operating system: Windows
Your device: HTC EVO 4G
HBOOT version: 2.16.0001
Serial number: type here the serial number provided by ADB in the previous step
Take note of the beta key generated by the site.
From the command prompt on the computer, run revolutionary.exe (type the command and press Enter). Or, an easier way to launch the program would be to double-click the executable file from within Windows Explorer.
The program will ask you for the beta key. Copy and paste the beta key and then press Enter to start the rooting process. It usually takes some time, so be patient.
When the program completes, it will ask you whether you want to download ClockworkMod Recovery and flash it onto the handset. Say no by typing “N” and pressing Enter at the command prompt.
Change the USB connection type on your handset to “Disk drive.” Your computer will detect the SD card on your handset. Using Windows Explorer, open your handset’s SD card folder. Copy PC36IMG.zip to the root folder (not a subfolder) on your handset’s SD card.
Unplug your phone and turn it off.
Boot the HTC EVO 4G into Hboot. To do that, press the handset’s Power button and Volume Down button simultaneously for a few seconds. The device will go into Hboot. You will see a prompt asking whether you want to start update. Press the Volume Up button to select “Yes.” Wait for the update to finish. Once it does, you will be asked to reboot the handset. Select “No.”
Go into recovery mode. On the handset, scroll down to “Recovery” (use the Volume buttons to scroll) and press the Power button to select it.
Once the device is in recovery mode, highlight “USB-MS toggle” from the menu and press the Power button to select it. Plug your phone back into your computer.
Using Windows Explorer on your computer, copy su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip from the “rootevo4ggingerbread” folder to the root folder on your handset’s SD card.
Press the Power button on your handset to disable the USB-MS toggle and go back to the recovery mode menu.
Select “Flash ZIP from SD card” on the main menu. In the next menu, select “Choose ZIP from SD card.” You will see a list of the files on your SD card. Use the Volume buttons to scroll through the list. Highlight su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip and press the Power button to select it.
After the handset finishes flashing the file, select “Return” to go back to the previous menu. Select “Reboot system now” to restart your handset.
Your HTC EVO 4G will reboot. To confirm that you have successfully rooted your handset, check for an app icon named Superuser on the device. If it’s there, congratulations! You’ve just rooted your HTC EVO 4G and you can now enjoy the advantages of using a rooted device.
Not too bad, but using page breaks / the enter button to separate info would have been a lot better and easier to read, for things with multiple steps.

There she should be all set now. Thanks for the tip
The gingerbread zip file does not download.
The gingerbread rooting file from downloadandroid does not download. The only thing that you can do is download the viewer and the viewer does not contain the zip file.
I just tried and I downloaded the zip file no problem... Scrool down a little bit and click download here.

Fantastic find if it works, my phone is unlocked so I can't test it but thanks a lot for sharing!!! Priceless
N.B. The first 8 steps are the process for rooting your phone, since you need to be root to do step 11. If you already have a rooted phone, start from step 10.

I am following 100% tutorial but I am unable to unlock my I9000. Look at the screenshot for the error that I encounter.
I have put the update.zip in root of phone memory, root of MicroSD etc but no chance. Do I need to root the phone or what's the problem?

Please read my post above. By doing this, you are rooting your phone.
It seems that the update.zip has not been properly signed, I see that it contains a new busybox, maybe the OP tried to optimise it and failed?
Use the original update.zip from the FAQ (http://www.multiupload.com/JHIFK9K80P) to root your phone, then continue from step 9.
The same happens with the file that I downloaded from your posted link!!!
Whats going wrong here?

No idea. Have you rooted your phone already? Have you installed any mods or firmwares?
No need to root
You dont need to root your phone to get to Step 11. The Terminal Emulator I installed from the Market let me do Step 11 directly.
All I then just did was email the nv_data.bin file to my inbox and later just open it in Textpad.
So, it was a bad tutorial. I tried to go step by step but now I begin from step 11 and everything is OK. My first I9000 unlocked like a charm
Thanks

Hi,
I have a NSPRO box and read the unlock code, but as I insert it, it doesn't unlock the phone.
As this didn't work, I tried your method, and the code that showes up is the same as read by NSPRO box, and... it still doesn't work.
Attached is the printscreen of the HEX area where the code is. I've noticed it says "18146D" and not "181460" as your indicated. Could this be the reason why the code doesn't work?

Samsung Vibrant SGH-T959 Recovery Mode
I've tried all sorts of button combinations to get the Samsung Vibrant T959 into recovery mode. I think since this device is a T-Mobile phone, the firmware has been modified for VolUp+VolDn+Pwr recovery mode.
As of now, the only way I know how to get the phone into recovery mode is by using the Android SDK and sending off a command: adb reboot recovery
I've been putting together an Android SDK & Rooting tutorial as well as other Samsung Vibrant T959 findings here: jordanpeterson.me/content/t-mobile-samsung-vibrant-sgh-t959

it is also good practice to make a Nandroid backup before flashing any custom ROM
Install Custom Font
Credit goes to churapa. Nice work Bro!! Original Guide HERE
**ROOT Is Required for this
**ALWAYS make a Nandroid Backup before attempting any Mods
-Things you will need:
-True Type Fonts(both Normal and Bold .ttf)
-ADB Tool and knowlege of use
-Required Drivers for proper communication between PC and Android
1: Copy both fonts (normal and bold) into folder named Androidfonts
2: Rename fonts to DroidSans and DroidSans-Bold

7: Now exit CMD, unmount phone in Partitions menu, Go Back, Reboot Phone, Disconnect USB cable
Enjoy your new font!!
NOTE: Respectively you can backup your current fonts by entering the following in ADB:
adb pull /system/fonts/DroidSans.ttf c:\androidfonts\backup
adb pull /system/fonts/DroidSans-Bold.ttf c:\androidfonts\backup
How to Sideload 3rd Party Apps:
(Rooting NOT required for this)
Download SDK Tool HERE
1: Un-RAR Android folder to root directory on PC (ie: C:\ )
2: Open CMD Prompt and type CD\ and hit Enter
3: Now type cd\android\tools Enter
4: Plug in Data cable and choose "Charge Only" on phone (always choose this)
5: Now in CMD prompt enter this command: adb install barcodescanner3.4.apk and press Enter
The SDK tool should install the Barcode Scanner app on the phone. Yay!! Success!!
**You can use this method to install .apk downloads onto the phone. For this demo i had already inserted
the Barcode Scanner app into SDK tools folder. the actual command should read as follows:
adb install c:\path to .apk file (ie: adb install c:\apps\filename.apk)
**I chose this app because you can use it to install other apps by scanning the barcode
found on many HTC App sites.
How to apply ringtones over 300kb limit:
Short story first
I wanted a nice free app to manage files, so i installed Astro File Manager using Barcode app from above.
While moving some files around i discovered the option to set mp3's to ringtone... and it worked!!
This is good because i was not happy to see there was a 300kb limit to ringtones. There may be another
or better way, but this is how i did it
1: Go to Astro app website HERE
2: Scan the Barcode with Barcode scanner app to install Astro Direct link HERE
3: Open Astro, navigate to SD Card\Mobile\Music
4: find the music file you want set to ringtone, Hold on it until menu pops up
5: Select "Music Options", select "Apply as Ringtone"
or if you dont wanna go through all that hassle, install Rings Extended App. Direct Download HERE
How to remove unwanted Stock Apps using SDK:
1: Once your phone has been rooted with Clockwork, boot into Recovery(hold volume down/press power)
2: Open CMD prompt, get to the "android\tools" directory
3: In recovery window highlight "Mount System"
4: Plug in data cable, in CMD type adb remount
5: Now enter adb shell
*you can view the list of apps stored in the phone by entering ls
6: To remove an app enter the following: rm whateverapp.apk, then enter rm whateverapp.odex
(example: rm HtcFacebook.apk ENTER then rm HtcFacebook.odex ENTER)
7: Type ls again to confirn they have been removed, reboot phone.
*NOTE: you may get 0.0dip listed in Widgets menu. simply go into Manage Apps and locate HTC Sense. Open it and "clear data". your display settings will be reset to factory, but it gets rid of the false data.
Stay tuned!! More to come
Nice tut I could easily follow it

done Bro, added a revised version to the main guide
tested it out on my Aria first, everything worked perfectly.
Hey Zed,
You might want to add to the Font section that you can change your LockScreen font using exactly the same method, but the font for the LockScreen is named Clockopia.ttf -- I'm sure anyone who changes their fonts will want that one changed too.
Also, on the pull command to back up your fonts, you need to add a \ after backup. I did it your way and it wrote the fonts into a file called backup. Then each time I entered it again to back up another font, it overwrote the previous one. Maybe the pull commands should also be moved up into the actual instructions instead of a footnote too, in case someone doesn't read all the way through before starting the process. It will be too late if they have already followed the instructions in their current form.
These are just suggestions, not criticism. Love the thread, thanks a lot for creating and updating it!
Thank you so much for this thread. It made rooting my Aria and putting on the latest liberated froyo ROM super easy. I was a root/custom rom virgin before yesterday!
I'd also add a rom list so people can stay updated.

all suggestions are appeciated. good thoughts bro, soon as i have time it will be done
I rooted my phone this last Monday with great success, and have been happily flashing ROMs ever since. I have had a few friends/aquaintances asking me how to do this, so I thought I would post this here to help them, and hopefully a few others here.
Special thanks to evilecho. I just added a few “noob” steps to his amazing tutorial.
If installed, uninstall HTC Sync. This is very important!
Backup anything you need backed up off your phone. Most things on your phone will be safe but back everything up just to be sure.
Download SuperUser zip & Amon_RA’s recovery (if you don’t want to use the Clockwork Mod recover that ships with Revolutionary)
Note: Many people are advising that people new to rooting use Amon_RA’s recovery. Amon_RA’s recovery is very simple, reliable, and very solid and does everything you need to flash a new ROM, if you would like.
Copy both to your root of SD card
Download and install HTC Drivers
Download Revolutionary: S-OFF & Recovery Tool
Note: The download link is at the bottom of the page. You will need to enter your EVO’s Serial number which is located under the battery. Make sure you to copy/write down the beta key. You will need it later)
Copy the beta key to Notepad or a similar app
On your EVO:
Enable USB debugging mode: Go to Settings –> Applications –> Development –> check box for USB debugging [/INDENT]
Disable Fast boot: Go to Settings –> Power –> check box for Fast Boot
Connect your EVO to your PC with a USB cable - Select Charge Only
Unzip the Revolutionary tool and run it as admin (to run as admin, right click and select run as admin)
Open a command prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd)
Navigate to the folder where you unzipped the Revolutionary tool
Type revolutionary.exe
The tool will recognize your device
Enter/paste the beta key that you pasted into Notepad
Note: to paste into the command prompt, right click on the top bar of the window -> Edit -> Paste
The phone will fastboot twice
It will ask you if you want to install the Clockwork Mod recovery. Select Yes.
Note: Instructions to switch to Amon_RA to follow.
After Revolutionary is complete, boot into the bootloader (if not already there) by turning off the phone, then hold the power button and the down volume button for a few seconds. You should then see “Revolutionary” at the top, and “S-OFF”.
The phone should now ask you if you want to update the recovery (by recognizing the PC36IMG.zip file that we downloaded and copied to the SD card of the phone). Select yes. This will update your recovery to Amon_RA's.
Use the up and down arrow keys and choose “Recovery” by pushing the power button
Choose “Flash zip from sdcard”
Choose “Choose zip from sdcard”
Use the up arrow key to move you to the bottom of the list, then look for “su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip” and push the power button to select
Push the power button again to accept
You are now rooted!
At this point, I would recommend going to this awesome thread by sekigah84, which will walk you through creating a Nanroid backup and flashing ROMs. Enjoy!
As always, this will void your warranty and may possibly damage your phone. You and you alone are responsible for anything that you do. Everything contained in this thread is for informational purposes only.

Do you know how to use adb/fastboot ? if you know you can use that to easily root the N7.
Here's the link on how to use adb/fastboot to unlock and root the Nexus 7.
If not, then use this toolkit by following the link below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766475
Download the program and install it.
After that, watch this tutorial first once and then start rooting with the toolkit.
http://www.youtube.com/results?sear...0.219.737.0j3j1.4.0...0.0...1ac.1.NbcxhPx0ZLs
IMPORTANT NOTE: You must unlock your Nexus 7's bootloader in order to proceed with the rooting process. As a result, everything in your tablet will be erased. So backup what you can and put it back later.
I would recommend using adb fast boot method, it is very simple if you follows it correctly, I will give you full instructions on how to unlock boot loader and root
ALL DATA WILL BE LOST , BACKUP EVERYTHING
I RECOMMEND USING TWRP CUSTOM RECOVERY
Getting started
In order to root Android 4.2 the following three requirements must be satisfied beforehand:
The Android SDK, which you can download from Google Developers
A custom recovery like ClockworkMod (CWM) or Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP)
SuperSU, which you can download from CF-Root
There are no major differences between the two, but TWRP is more touch-oriented thanks to larger buttons. CWM is also available in a touch-compatible variant, but it has much smaller buttons. It's a matter of personal preference between the two though, but you have to choose one.
Before starting the process I urge you to perform a backup, as all data might be lost afterwards. You can copy the contents of the SD card to a safe external location such as cloud storage service or computer hard drive.
Setting the Stage
The first step that needs to be performed after all the files are downloaded is to install the Android SDK. Afterwards open the Android SDK Manager and select the following two items:
Android SDK Platform-tools -- it contains the required programs to install Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
Google USB Driver -- it contains the necessary drivers for the Nexus device
Then you should create a folder in an easily accessible location within the command line. In this example I will use a folder named "Root" in my C:\ drive in Windows. The path name will therefore be: "C:\Root".
From the folder where Android SDK Platform-tools is installed (in my case it is "C:\Program Files x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools") copy the following files to the previously created "Root" folder:
adb.exe
AdbWinApi.dll
AdbWinUsbApi.dll
fastboot.exe
The following files must also be copied to the "Root" folder:
CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip -- SuperSU file
The custom recovery that you previously downloaded for your specific device (please see below)
For my 8 GB nexus 7 wifi(codename "grouper") I will use TWRP with the name "openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.0-grouper.img".
You can easily find the codename for your devoice by looking into Google
The custom recovery file differs for each device, please make sure you download the correct file
In order to make the process smoother for instance the SuperSU file can be renamed to "root.zip" and the custom recovery to "customrecovery.zip". It's a matter of convenience, but for accuracy I will stick to the original naming for this guide.
If the previous steps are completed you must have the following six files in your "Root" folder:
adb.exe
AdbWinApi.dll
AdbWinUsbApi.dll
fastboot.exe
CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip -- SuperSU file
The custom recovery. In my case it is "openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.0-grouper.img"
From there, you can proceed to install the drivers for "fastboot mode". To install them, follow these steps:
Power off your Nexus device.
Press and hold Volume Up and Volume Down then press and hold the Power button; the device will now enter "fastboot mode".
Go to Device Manager (Computer -> Properties -> Device Manager in Windows 7/8) and identify the device; for me it shows up as Android 1.0.
Right click Android 1.0 and select "Update Driver Software," then select "Browse my computer for driver software".
Select "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer," then click "Next".
From "Have Disk..." option go to the folder where you have Google USB Driver installed (for me it's "C:\Program Files .(x86)\Android\android-sdk\extras\google\usb_driver") and select "android_winusb.inf".
Out of the three options select "Android ADB Interface" and validate any future warning window to install the driver.
Final preparations
Everything is prepared in order to start the installation process, but in order to do so a command window must be opened. Windows Key + R opens "Run"; type in "cmd" and the command window appears. Typing "cd C:\Root" and pressing Enter sets the "Root" folder as the working directory. Pressing the Shift key and right clicking inside the "Root" folder will also deliver the same result.
The device must be turned on in "fastboot mode" which I have explained at step no.2 during the driver installation process, and obviously plugged-in to the computer. You then have to type in the following commands while in "fastboot mode":
fastboot devices -- this is just for verification purposes; if there is no listed device then the drivers have been improperly installed and steps 1 through 7 must be redone.
fastboot oem unlock -> you have to accept the prompt in order to continue -- this command will unlock the bootloader, but it will also erase the data on the device which is why a backup is necessary.
fastboot reboot-bootloader -- this will reboot the bootloader.
fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.0-grouper.img -- this will flash the custom recovery --please use the specific file and name for your particular Nexus device!
fastboot erase cache -- this will erase the cache -- might not be necessary but it's just as a precaution.
fastboot reboot -- this will reboot the device.
After Android 4.2 is loaded and running the SuperSU file must be copied from the "Root" folder to the internal storage (shows up in Windows Explorer as a Nexus device). A simple copy and paste will do the trick here.
Then you have to power off the Nexus device and enter "fastboot mode" again. Use the Volume Up and Volume Down keys to navigate until you can select "Recovery Mode". After the power button is pressed the device will reboot in the new custom recovery.
Rooting your Nexus device
If you have ClockworkMod installed, you have to perform the following steps:
Select "install zip from sdcard"
Select "choose zip from sdcard"
Select "0" (zero) folder
Select "CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip"
Select "Yes - Install CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip"
Select "Go Back"
Select "reboot system now"
If you have Team Win Recovery Project installed, you have to perform the following steps:
Press "Install".\
Select "CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip" -- for me it's in the "0" (zero) folder
Swipe to confirm flash
Press "Wipe cache/dalvik" (just as a precaution)
Swipe to wipe
Press "Reboot System"
After Android 4.2 loads your device can run apps with elevated privileges (meaning it's rooted). A SuperSU app is installed in order to allow root requests, so please use your judgement on which apps you grant access.
If you experiences any problem, please reply and I will look into it.

Way to wordy and not easy to follow
Basically:
Boot into recovery (yes i know you don't properly have one)
Get Android SDK from HERE
Once downloaded/installed.
Navigate to the "Platform-tools" folder, where you should see ADB/FASTBOOT
Hold shift, right click and "open command prompt here"
type fastboot devices
(if your device is listed, move on)
Unlock your bootloader
type fastboot oem unlock
Download THIS(supersu)
Download TWRP from HERE
Place the SuperSU download file on your SD CARD (Nexus has a virtual SD, place it there)
Place the recovery in the "Platform-tools" folder with your ADB/FASTBOOT files.
Reboot to fastboot again (Power and volume down)
fastboot devices
if listed continue:
fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.4.1.0-grouper.img
Reboot back into recovery (which should now be twrp) (POWER AND VOLUME DOWN)
Then from TWRP menu choose "Install"
Find the 2 files you downloaded and placed on SD card
Install them using TWRP.
Reboot
Profit.

Well... I liked it... for a guy with only 2 posts to his/her name to explain (perhaps in TOO much detail) how to root takes b**ls:!
Keep it up, naman14... but be a little more judicious in what you include (and choose to exclude) in your walkthrou's.
Writing instructions is art in itself... and requires practice. Succinct and pithy is the way to go.
Rgrds,
Ged.
Thank you all, the last thing i ever rooted was my sprint htc hero a yr or so ago
Long time lurker, first time poster. I'm coming from a iPhone (it was a hand-me-down, I swear!) and a HTC Snap, so my Note II LTE (N7105) is my very first Android. I got sick of waiting for Samsung to release 4.2/3, hence I'm flashing Cyanogenmod. Being a n00b myself, I couldn't find any n00b friendly guides on how to flash my phone, so here's to hoping this little guide will help someone!
All that follows are from my own experience, and may or may not work on your phone. I'm not responsible for anything that happens to your phone.
I'm sorry for the lifehacker URL, I don't have the required posts to post outside links
First things first, rooting your phone is NOT required. See li feha ck er.c0m / you-dont-need-root-to-flash-custom-rom-using-third-par-1090733218
1) CHARGE YOUR PHONE
1a) Backup your phone. I used Helium, search for it on Google Play
1b) Remove your SD card, just in case.
2) Download and install Visual C++ and Heimdall, links from wiki.cyanogenmod.org/ w/Install_ CM_for_t0lte
2a) Download ClockworkMod Recovery, rename it recovery.img and place it in the same folder as Heimdall.exe
2b) Reboot your computer.
3) Download Cyanogenmod from get.cm, and Google Apps from goo.im/gapps. They should both be .zip files
3a) Transfer them to /sdcard/ on your phone
4) Power off your phone, and then get it to Download Mode (hold down Vol down + Home + Power)
4a) Connect your phone to your computer directly, not through a hub.
4b) Open Heimdall, Drivers, and run Zadig.exe
4c) Click on Options on top, and select List All Devices
4d) Select Samsung USB Composite Device or MSM8x60 or Gadget Serial or Device Name from the drop down menu
4e) Click on the big button with Install WCID Driver. There should be a popup saying that the driver was successfully installed
5) Close Zadig.exe, and open a Command Prompt window. (Go to the start menu and type cmd in the blank box)
5a) Navigate to the folder with Heimdall.exe. (use cd to change directories, ie type "cd [path]")
5b) Enter "heimdall flash --recovery recovery.img --no-reboot", press enter, and stare intently on your phone for a blue bar
5c) If all goes well, the bar should appear, and once it's filled up (took less than a minute on my phone), close the Command Prompt window and unplug your phone
6) Go into Recovery Mode (hold down Vol up + Home + Power)
6a) Using the volume buttons and home button, select Install Zip From SDCard, and then flash the Cyanogenmod .zip first, and then Google Apps .zip
6b) Select Wipe Data/Factory Reset
6c) You're done!
