Nexus S i9023 ICS upgrade problem - Nexus S General

Hello.
I just downloaded the OTA update from the google servers (VQ8PQk_V.zip) and applied it.
My baseband version appeared as "Unknown", so, in my infinite wisdom, I decided to flash the XXKF1-GRK39F radio through fastboot.
The problem is that it's been stuck at "writing 'radio'..." for more than 15 mins now. What should I do?
EDIT:
I have a NANDROID backup from just before the update. If I pull out the battery and restore it, will my radio restore, too?

...why don't you flash radio via recovery ?

Ok, I solved it. Here's how:
-since I was stuck at "writing 'radio'..." I did a battery pull.
-installed the Android 2.3.6/GRK39F/XXKF1 Radio/KA3 Bootloader Flashable rom from the ALL-OTA thread.
-restored my nandroid backup
Everything's back to normal and I'm back on 2.3.6. Gonna wait for the official i9023. For a moment there, I thought I ruined my phone.
I have tried a couple of custom roms since I got this phone, but I'm not completely comfortable with everything.

huh....funny enough, I applied the update again, and this time the radio updated properly. everything works fine

Hi
I am using a Nexus S I9023 (India). I just updated my phone to 4.0.3 using the ROM file downloaded from XDA today. Now, there is no signal, it doesn't even read my sim card. It says the same msg under Baseband version, "unknown". except this everything else seems to work fine. I have not taken any back also before the upgrade.
Please help.

I do have the same problem: My Nexus S i9023 had 2.3.6 Stock ROM and after the Update, the Baseband/Network/IMEI/etc is UNKNOWN. How can I get back 2.3.6.?

Use fastboot to flash custom recovery. And then flash the full stock 2.3.6 and await the OTA.

The ota you are flashing patches the radio KF1, you guys are probably are on a different radio and the radio doesn't patch correctly.
This is the full rom ota 4.0.3, just flash and everything will work http://android.clients.google.com/packages/ota/google_crespo/ZD3PyN0t.zip[/QUOTE]

you sir are correct. Fixes my signal issues

Sorry for the noob question as I can't seem to easily find the answer through search but how do you flash the this other 4.0.3 rom? Running ICS already from the other rom (VQ8PQk_V.zip).
Can I just do this again using the fastboot? Although I've tried going back to recovery and it doesn't work, as has been stated in the forum. The fixes for the recovery look complicated and require rooting (I think). I haven't rooted my i9023 yet.

Hello, same problem for me but and I don't understand what is the solution...
Some says flash custom recovery, some just flash with the ZD3PyN0t.zip... and I don't even know what flashing is (if it requires rooting or not) mine is not as you can imagine...
Can someone guide me a little please ? Don't want to break my phone more than it is !

For I9020T/I9023?
I agree, really need to post what version it's for... I've seen some people reporting bricks lately because they got trigger happy and flashed the update without making sure it was compatible with their model.

I can confirm it works on I9020T
I went from CM9 Kang to this with just a wipe and everything is working as expected
Please
Can someone verify the OTA
2.3.6 => 4.0.3 OTA has network registering issues in my country
It takes 2 minutes to find and register on a network after boot when EDGE only on
May be this will help the issue

Current version is 2.3.7 Oxygen ROM.
So I just copy it into the sdcard, boot into recovery, wipe, flash this ROM and done?

Bootloop on 4.2

I was running cm-10 new 32gb Nexus 7 and decided to update to cm-10.1. It flashed fine but when I reboot it wont boot. If I flash again it boots fine but it doesnt matter how I flash...when I reboot it just goes into a bootloop (google black screen).
Please, any advice?
Sounds like the download is bad. Try downloading again and use adb to put it on the Nexus.

I rooted with the Tool Kit and the version was 4.1.1. After I rooted and unlocked, I flashed cm-10 stable. Used it for a while and everything was fine. Last night I flashed like 4 different ROMs with the same result...bootloop after a reboot. I noticed on the first ROM, when I finished the setup and rebooted. Should I go back to stock but with 4.2 using the Tool Kit and then root again?

Yeah I would see if stock is doing that too. If so it sounds like something wrong with your device not the software.

Thx for your replys guys. I really appreciate it.

What version of TWRP are you using? You need to be on the latest for 4.2 roms. 2.3.3.0 I think.

I do have 2.3.3.0, but guess what....I found the problem! I was flashing M-kernel because I read that that kernel is great for playing games. Since I have a whole bunch of games, I decided to flash it. All the ROMs I flashed...I flashed with that kernel, and it booted fine. My issue was at reboot. Every time it put me on a bootloop. I just finished flashing grouper-M1 from CM, did my setup and rebooted, and booted fine!
Imma do some more reading to see if I can find a good kernel to run with cm-10.1.
Thank you daviac!!!!!:good:
Edit to the previous post and maybe it will help others:
The problem was not the kernel...IT WAS THE BOOTLOADERS version. I had to upgrade bootloaders. With adb I flashed the image and everything is fine!
Reading is fundamental...and I've learned my lesson!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Xparent SkyBlue Tapatalk 2
There is a disclaimer before installing M-Kernel or probably any other kernel, that states that you need to be on the latest bootloader version. But it's ok, its best to learn from mistakes right?

[Q] About flashing a kernel and flashing new PA version (15 Feb.)

Hi.
I'm in PA 3.0 (08 FEB Build), now i wanted to flash the lastest build but now it seems like we have to do something else apart of flashing the ROM, flash bootloader and radios? Why do I need to do this? I love PA but I dont understand why in this build I need to flash bootloader and radio.
About the kernel, to flash it, is the same way as the rom? Recovery, wipe cache/dalvik, reboot? That's all nothing else?
And the last thing, does Franco kernel r73 Works on the lastest PA build? (15 Feb)
[I was going to ask each thing in PA/Franco thread but I cant because of my level]

You don't *need* to upgrade your baseband and boot loader. The new version of PA is 4.
No, just wipe cache (you don't even really have to) and flash it. Just make sire if you come from franco.Kernel to flash the reset kernel before flashing a different one.
Yes, it should.

Also I'm with the PA 11-Feb release and

The question is ;
How to that step by step ..

If you guys are using PA before the FEB 15th build, you will need to wipe everything in recovery before flashing the new FEB 15th rom.
PLEASE READ THIS GUIDE
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2151498
Someone had already asked this question yesterday.
One more thing, you don't need the new bootloader or baseband. Yes, most of us love PA rom but you dont need it. The new bootloader and baseband were created by Google not Molesarecoming (One of the many developers of PA rom). It's nice to have the latest Google S**t anyways.
To add a kernel all you have to do is choose which one you want and flash it after you have finished flashing everything.
That's it. It's that simple.

for example, I'm running CarbonRom at the moment which is based on JSS15Q - I've flashed this zip without any problems but will I need to reflash it when I install the next nightly?

Yeah, I should have been clearer as well - I was basically checking that custom roms don't flash the bootloader (I'd assumed that a factory restore / ota update would)

Quick queastion , I was on JSS15J when stock, flashed ROM that says now JLS36C. If I flash this will it erase everything and do I even need to? Thanks for the help.
It won't erase any user data. Whether you want to flash is up to you. You'll get it automatically if you wait for jls36g ota.
Why is the 3.15 bootloader not available as .img file in the google recovery as always? I normally flash bootloader ONLY by using fastboot?!

SM-N915W8 Canadian NOTE EDGE

Hey just got my edge today, looks like there is very little going on as it was just released a few days ago despite it being out in the states for quite some time, the only difference I believe is the LTE in the Canadian version.
Anyways, coming from the note 2, 3 and 4 and the trtlecan version always being close to the trtletmo I decided to risk it and flash the tmo cf auto root and recovery despite there being no stock firmware laying around on sammmobile the others..
annnd I'm happy to report that I now have a TWRP recovery, rooted, SM-N915W8.
go ahead and follow the very detail steps in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-edge/general/easy-steps-stock-odin-n915tuvu1anjl-sm-t2943993
MAKE SURE TO READ THE PART ABOUT IT FAILING (to flash cwm) AND THAT BEING OK being flashing TWRP
and then the BRIGHTNESS SETTINGS inside recovery which will look like you have sleep lock if you don't fix them before letting the screen timeout
and have all 4 files on hand before you start!
Awesome, thanks for the info, I was debating it but just was being a chicken. I'm glad everything worked out. Did you make a nand? If so did you flash the nand just to make sure everything was OK? Are your root apps working without issues.? I don't mind taking the risk...just wanna be sure

I Too have a rooted SM-N915W8 (BELL VERSION but im on TELUS)
Thank you for your insight @gundal
Awesome glad it worked out for you too, now we can experiment with which kernel and os will boot without fear of bricking
Yes, I tried reflashing the backup and all is good.
Hyperdrive didn't work even with restoring our boot sector (kernel)

Haha, i was reading through and just found it funny.
Glad you guys are having luck with the Canadian model. I jumped the gun and imported one from Korea as soon as it was released and it's an awesome device!
Enjoy!
Were you guys able to flash a custom ROM? Which ROMS will work with the Canadian version? And which US Model number is 'equivalent' to the Canadian one?

Anyone try any T-Moble stuff? I didnt look myself but I ask because we all used the tmoble stuff for our old Canadian Note3s ... could be the same senerio. I think that Tmoble kernels should work..
There might be a version of Hyperdrive for tmoble..

What recovery are you using cause Im on twrp and I cant make a backup, cache partition cant be mounted either, are you having this prob too?....
Dont worry about it, someone else who had this problem fixed it by formatting cache - did that and everything went fine.

Tried flashing Hyperdrive Edge for T-Mo with both twrp (2.8.1.1) and cwm (6.0.5.1 Xiaolu) referenced in the root guide by OP. They flashed without error but I got bootlooped both times. Luckily backup/restore works for both recoveries.
Does anyone know of a way to get back to stock recovery after flashing cwm or twrp? Any known location of a stock image?

Go to sammobile web site...download the original firmware for your model and flash it. When u flash original firmware everything will be back to stock including recovery..and you will be able to receive ota update. To flash stock firmware...just use odin. Search this forum for instruction on how to flash using odin.

Yeah I know about sammobile, flashing via Odin etc. There's no stock firmware uploaded for the Canadian variants yet so I was wondering of an alternate method to flash the stock recovery. I tried extracting the recovery from the stock image via ADB shell, converting to tar.md5, then flashing with Odin but it failed....likely because I'm rooted. Guess I'll have to wait until the firmware gets uploaded. Thanks anyway.
Try contacting the sammobile team...and their forum..they maybe able to help..

Not yet. I check daily. I'm hoping someone will be able to capture it via Kies when Lollipop rolls out. It's only matter of time before sammobile gets it.

Arg, that really bites. Now I have a new phone I cant use at all. You'd think the firmware would be released when the phone was. Have you tried the other roms? I can't even gwt onto my internal sd to put them on the phone so I can try installing them. So frustrated.

SM-N915x ... ?? Canadian note edge
Hello, Same thing here i got my hands a Canadian Demo sm-915x and got told to flash it with stock firmware in order to get the phone working properly. But i cant seem to find any version of the firmware that actually works on it ...
it installed numerous times then when it reboots it shows upgrading packages , it reaches package 6 then reboots and loops over and over...
any guidance or firmware out there to recommend to try ?
