[Solved] [Q] ADB over USB on 1.1 - Nook Touch General

Has anyone gotten ADB over USB working with the NST 1.1 firmware? There seem to be guides all over the place, but they're either for the 1.0 firmware or for the original Nook, and every set of instructions I've followed doesn't do anything for me.
I'm trying to figure out why when I connect the NST to my computer via USB, adb can't see the device, no matter what I do. Looking at the ramdisk and the init.rc, it seems I have everything set up correctly. Of course, I could just use adb wireless that came with touchnooter, but I'd really like to get the USB version working again.
So, has anyone had any luck?

Not sure what ramdisk you're using but these are the ones used by most rooting methods around here.
The USB one works just fine, but I must say that getting the drivers set up on Windows 7 was a bit of a pita..
After trying several pre-packaged drivers I ended up editing the inf file in the android usb driver pack manually and got it working both at home and at work now, no problems.

Runs good on 1.1. here. I also tried a lot of drivers and the working one only after 3 installs. I think it was the driver of the forum here (but Im not sure anymore after that mess).

Well, it's important to know that all those driver packages are actually based on the one you get with the Android SDK.
So people should save themselves the hassle and just get that one, and edit the android_winusb.inf manually.
Just add this to both the [Google.NTx86] and [Google.NTamd64] sections:

Thanks for the replies folks. Good to know that those ramdisks work well with 1.1 (those are the ones I've been using too)...so I must be doing something wrong, or my computer must be set up incorrectly. I'm on a Mac, so AFAIK, I don't need to install any extra usb drivers or anything.
I can connect fine to my phone with adb over usb, so I'm not sure why the nook is failing.

Well the ramdisks are nothing but a copy of the 1.1.0 ramdisk with adb enabled.
I have zero experience with OSx, but you might want to look at the Linux adb threads..

Yeah - there must be something wrong with my machine. I just reverted to the 1.0 version of the firmware, and went through the rooting procedure again, but my machine still can't see the device over ADB. I swear I had this working some weeks ago.
By the way, when you guys plug in the nook, and it shows the "USB mode" screen, do you first eject it from your PC, and then ADB works? Or does ADB work for you regardless of whether the NOOK drive is ejected or not?

Answering my own question here:
It turned out to be a fairly trivial solution - here's to not checking over your setup carefully enough.
It all came down to adding 0x2080 (the nook touch vendor id - which happens to be the same as the nook color vendor id - you can verify by using lsusb on linux) to the ~/.android/adb_usb.ini file, which basically just tells adb to look at additional vendor ids. This is stated clearly in the nook color docs, and I could have sworn that I did that hours ago, but when I re-looked at the file, I found mine was blank . As soon as I added 0x2080 back, everything started working perfectly.
Note, this is necessary for both mac and linux.
And, it doesn't matter if your NST is on the "Usb mode" screen or not; I got it to work both ways.

[Q] Cannot get adb to connect to Nook Color

Ok I've researched this to death and tried in on both Windows 7 and osx 10.6.6 to attach using adb and install a couple of .apk's and the same thing happens on both platforms - NOTHING :-(.
You would think this would be pretty basic, but I am missing something somewhere.
Summary:
1. Am running the stock rooted b&n rom.
2. Can access both the internal and SD cards on the nook on both windoze and
osx. Eliminates cables, drivers etc...
3. Debug is selected in the nookstools settings
On both OSX and Win 7 installed the latest version of the Android SDK - both installs provided me with the platform-tools directory from which I will initiate all adb commands. So far so good...
on mac: ./adb devices returns:
$ ./adb kill-server
$ ./adb devices
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
List of devices attached
$
As you can see I never get any device information returned, does not matter if Im on Windows or mac - same response.
Just for grins I downloaded the wireless app and tried to connect adb that way...no luck...
I could go into everything that i have tried over the last 24 hours...but that would also be pointless.
Bottom line...assuming this is something simpleI am just missing. Assuming since the symptoms are the same on both platforms that the issue lies on the nook but for the life of me I cannot find it.
Assuming if I cannot figure this out I will slowly go insane..my next step is to flash either froyo or honeycomb rom and see if this helps with the problems. Of course I MUST have the market available to me or I will not b able to load any .apk's.

I know this will sound stupid, but I had this same problem and the only way I found to fix it is to adb while I have the superuser app running.
YMMV, but it solved that issue fo me.

I knew it was something simple, there is not a post on the entire Internet in any forum I have ever found (and I may have searched them all!) that mentions superuser needs to be running for adb to be able to communicate with the device. I wonder if this is a nook issue only. Will test on my wife's Epic this evening and post the results tonight.

As was I such a simple fix you would think I would have thought about permissions on the client side , such is life and tech thats why we all hang together.
Must say I was going to purchase the iPad 2 when it came out (NEVER buy 1st gen Apple) but now I'm not so sure...LOVING my Nook.

I'm not sure if this is related but I *think* that what made it work for me was to freshly enable the Debugging USB mode immediately before connecting the USB cable. Maybe that also triggered the Superuser app??? It's always the small things in life that make us smile
my problem is a little different.... I have sd cards with honeycomb (no market) and froyo (market and other apps). I can see the NC in adb with both, but honeycomb shows the device offline... and adb cannot talk to it. froyo show the device online and I can use adb. Both honeycomb and froyo show up in windows too.
I can't find anything that talks about getting the NC to show online to adb.

I have the same problem of trying to get my nook recognized. The only thing I can see different between my setup and the instructions on NookDevs was that they said I should see Android ADB Composite Interface on my Device Manager. Mine reads Android ADB Interface.
Tried the Superuser and the USB Debugging with no luck. Just really trying to get this set up so in case I need to factory reset. Because the 8x method manually is way too hard.

I had intermittent ADB success with my Mac. After installing the ADB Wireless app there have been no problems.

for some reason, it seemed to work fine.
it read the device as online.

I am still having same issue with adb and linux not recognizing my epic I have posted in regards to this and had no responses there all so many devs that work with epic and yet not one has commented to offer a fix i have tried adding 99-samsung.rules with proper edits and changed the 51 rules to match i have reloaded those rules I have added the edited adb i have restarded linux i have changed cables phones usb ports and it picks up my friend og droid no prob but neither me nor my fiances epic will be recognized. any help please.

Sounds like a drivers issue, or that you don't have USB debugging enabled on the phone.
Open the Dalvik Debugging Monitor Service (DDMS) that came with the Android SDK.
Does it recognize the phone at all in DDMS?
If yes, then does it say "online"? If yes, then you have something blocking adb from talking to your phone from your computer. (firewall?)
If no, then you have a driver or USB connectivity issue. (bad driver installation, usb debugging not enabled on phone, bad usb cable, plugged usb cable into a port not directly on the motherboard)
EDIT: Looks like the post above me could understand the run on sentence more than I could.
You can also run the command lsusb and it should tell you if your system is seeing the device.
What Linux distro your running?

I have followed your prior threads does not work. I have usb debugging on as explaiend i have tried everything means I have searched for hours on end and come with nothing. I have replaced the ADB and created 99-android.rules and edited that as well as editing the 15-android.rules files I have run lsusb and it does show samsung device.

Try the usb cable for the droid x. Its a really good one.

I have an incredible cord i can try that is about the only one but i dont see how it has anything to do with the usb cable when lsusb recognizes the device plugged in just adb will not list it on devices so that i dont think is the answer but thank you for the suggestion.

You should only have 1 rules file, my suggestion, delete the 15 one and keep the 99.
Make sure the permissions are configured correctly, the biggest issue to run this type of operations in linux is the permissions and the ownership on the config files

Let me go over what to do:
After downloading the rules file on the above post, for example I have the SDK (adb) installed on my PC on the following path: ~/android/tools/, so go to your SDK folder (where adb is located) and run the chmod a+rwx adb command.
After this, take the rules file you downloaded from the above post and moved it to the /etc/udev/rules.d/ folder (logged as root, NOT SUDO). After doing this, run the following commands:
make sure that 51-android.rules file has the following permissions -rw-r--r (read and write for owner, group + others read only)
su [then placed the password] (Once again DO NOT USE SUDO)
chown root:root 51-android.rules
Once done, restart the PC and it should be working 100%. Before connecting the phone, make sure USB Debugging is active, and restart your phone.
Connect your phone via USB and run the lsusb command to confirm the connection of the device and then run ./adb devices and check for the positive return!
Note: if you have never had a password on su, run the following command: sudo passwd and change the password and try running the series of command above.
Note2: add your user to the plugdev group on your computer
Note3: sometimes while performing the ./adb devices command will return a response stating that a device by the name ?????????????? is connected, this is OK, you can connect via ./adb shell and you will see your device file structure, if you request SU permissions you will have to authorize it on the phone via the SUPERUSER app that gets installed when rooting the device.
IMPORTANT: The password for ROOT (su) user is not the same as the password you enter for the SUDO command (your user) unless you make them the same!
I'm not sure what exact problem you are having, but I was having a similar problem until this morning (of ADB not recognizing the phone) until I did this:
A) Open the phone dialer.
B) Enter "##8778#".
C) Set both options to "PDA".
D) Make sure sure "USB Debugging" is enabled under "Settings", "Applications", "Development".
I have no idea if this fully applies to your issue, but if it helps, great. If not, no harm done.

Though this is good info (thanks for pointing it out), I would highly suggest to leave UART as Modem, and just change USB to PDA.
Sometimes you may have issues with Tethering if you set the UART to PDA.
I have been a bit busy I appreciate the run down and will try it here tomorrow or its 2am so later today I also checked the 8778 and my usb is already set to what was specified.

{Q} CM7 Nook Color not recoginzed in either Linux or Windows

Hello, I have CM 7.0.3 encore with the overclocked kernel on my nook. Lately I have not been able to get the thing to connect to my computer in either windows or Linux. (It's XP and "Lucid Lynx" 10.04 Ubuntu if that helps)
If I connect my cable to either the front of back USB ports (because I have tried both under both OSs) at best I get my windows install to see and start to run auto hardware install. This, of course does not work and the machine will inform me that my new hardware (which it correctly ids as a nook until this point) may not work correctly. And, it does not. It displays as 'removable drive' and clicking on it pulls up an 'insert disk please' message.
In Ubuntu the Nook will show up as B&N Ereader. Both SD cards (the internal and the card in slot) show as the same thing. Clicking on them brings up a message that this drive is not a folder and cannot be opened as such.
This thread leads me to think that there should be a notification in windows about the usb being connected...and as soon as I post this I will be restarting to check that... but I really rather do this under Ubuntu. ETA. This does not work for me. Canceling the install software wizard does not work either. (I have been uninstalling the faulty installs each time and rebooting the comp without the nook attached. Oh, and the Nook IS awake too. )
Searches bring up nothing, and I'm a bit lost.
I must be missing something so basic and simple no one has had this issue but me. I mean, Android is a Linux variant, right? They should be able to talk to one another!??
If your trying to accomplish what I think you are then it doesn't matter what your computers says. Plug your Nook into the PC and open your notifications window. There should be a USB icon on the status bar waiting for your input. Just follow the prompts.
Given you have gone through the process of installing the Android SDK, in Linux, from the terminal you need to change to your target folder to

~/android-sdk-linux_86/platform-tools
then you need to log in as root and kill, then start the server. make sure to exit root when you are done.

su : enter password
# ./adb kill-server
# ./adb start-server
# exit
then it should pick it up.
I have the same problem as OP and went crazy trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. It's not as simple as everyone suggests.
To be clear I'm using Linux, Ubuntu Natty. I have a Samsung Vibrant also running CM7 nightlies. Start adb, plug in Vibrant, shows up in adb devices list without any problem. Plug in the NC no device in adb. running lsusb there is no android vendorID for the NC but there is for the Vibrant. The NC only shows a vendorID for the mass storage just like the OP says.
The NC is booting with CM7 nightlie on the SD card, not eMMC. Will that make a difference?

I did manage to brick the nook trying to update the build last night so I'm in the middle of reflashing it. So, as soon as I finish making a boot micro SD (I know, I should just have one I keep for this but I don't) I will be flashing phiremod's version of CM7 on the nook.
digver, I did find somewhere on here that the OC kernel was causing some people grief and that once they removed it they had no issues connecting the the computer... but I think they were windows. I'm not sure if that will fix this very annoying little problem.

personally i <3 linux. It's the only way to fly esp with dealing with Androids. Android Central has a GREAT write up on how to install the SDK on your Linux unit.

Cannot get ADB. Please help

So I just bought a brand new Nook HD+ from best buy. It is in shrink wrap so looks factory new.
I first turn it on and it gives me the select the lanuage and country page (No wifi selected). I do not proceed. Press volume down and tap lower left hand corner. If gves me the Enable ADB button. I do not press it yet. Instead I plug it into computer, which then puts it in MTp mode.
I unplugged cable and now press the Enable ADB button. I plugged it back in and same MTP mode.
I then decided to skip OBE. So I press lower volume button and then lower left screen followed by lower right screen. Then I press the Factory button. Then the Skip OBE option.
Now I am at home screen, I go to settings, then developers, and I confirm the ADB status. just to be sure, I uncheck ADb and then rechecked it. Plugged it back in and same result. It puts it in MTP mode.
I then confirm by going to Device Manager and see no entry for Android Composite device.
I do notice out of the box, it is 2.0.2 not 2.0.0? Does this mean it is a customer return? Even though it was shrink wrapped?
Need Windows Driver for Nook
I believe you need a windows driver for the Nook HD and HD+ on Windows. On Ubuntu, I just do "android update device && adb kill-server && adb start-server && adb devices"

They could be working now on out of the box 2.0.2 now. Don't know.
You are not telling us much about your PC, which we need to know to help you. What version of Windows are you running? Have you got ADB running on any other devices?
No other new devices are showing? Did you follow the B&N trouble shooting guide section 4.6 which I reference in my HD+ tips thread linked in my signature.

Well, since you had other devices using ADB, then go to device manager and look under USB controllers. Uninstall any USB composite device there, especially any that has the device id under properties and details listing 2080 as part of the number. That will force the system to re-recognize and reinstall the right driver you can get from my HD+ tips thread.

There was a usb composite but it was for my wintv usb, I uninstalled it anyways. Nothing else, still not doing anything. Any chance this is a new hardware version that has this locked down?
It did come with 2.0.2 instead of 2.0.0
I don't see a reason for a hardware revision, and there is no reason for 2.0.2 instead of 2.0.0 other than bug fix since you can still root with 2.0.0 - 2.0.4. The inability to ADB is on your part. Seriously I don't see why would B&N lock down people ability to ADB since it's a requirement for people to develop for Nook platform. It's not like B&N will make 2 different versions of each device, one for developers and the other for consumers. I can still see B&N may lock down ability to root with current method on future revision (say 2.0.5+) but as of now it's open. ADB will never be lock. I think the fact that ADB for Nook devices are hard to get to will not only deter people from root but people to develop for the platform as well. Personally I think it's a bad choice on B&N part to have it hard for people to ADB.

I just bought a HD+ from Walmart. It was 2.0.2 out of the box and I was able to root the device successfully after OOBE was completed. I don't remember if the device upgraded itself to 2.0.4, I'll check later. I did the all in one root process on a Win7 64bit lappy so try it and see if it works.
IMO the person who posted about the sdcard file corruption has hardware issues but who knows? No one else is reporting having this issue afaik.
There are people that report a success ADB driver install on win7 64bits via my method. Check the tips thread.

So I reset the nook hd+, then registered (did not skip oobe) and it updated 2.0.4, but still same issue. It will not recognize device as Android Composite USB device, only as MTP media device.

No, I don't think so. If you read through the posts on the other threads you will see about half the users have a very difficult time making adb work. And it is never anything wrong with the HD, it is always something with your PC. There are so many different setups for windows that it is very hard to advise people. Just keep trying things others have. I still have problems and I have been doing it for weeks and each time it fails it is a different thing. The only thing I can advise you is to keep uninstalling things because something that is installed is blocking your PC from recognizing the new device. I would uninstall any device under portable devices, other, android phone and any device under USB controllers that has 2080 as part of the device id.

Oh you are so rght. I never did figure out what is blocking it, too impatient to uninstall stuff.
BUT, I did find an old seldom used laptop with win 7 32-bit. When plugged in it gave me error that drivers could not be installed!. Went to device manager, found the device and updated driver. Adb achieved and all in one root done.

Guide: adb on Nook HD/HD+ with CM10.1 emmc

ADB has all kinds of uses, but it's a pain to enable on Windows 7* with a Cyanogenmod Nook HD/HD+, especially with the spread out documentation. Not with this guide, however. (This is for emmc, no idea if it works with sdcard/hybrid installs)
Credit to Leapinlar for noticing the changed device ID.
EDIT: As jamus28 noted, you will also need the Google USB drivers. They come with the ADT.
1. Download usb_driver_r04-windows-B&N.zip here, courtesy of Leapinlar and B&N.
2. Enable Android debugging in developer settings.
3. Plug Nook into PC and open Device Manager.
4. Go to Portable Devices/BN Nook HD/HD+ and open properties.
5. Go to the details tab and then hardware ID's in the menu.
6. Leaving that window open, unzip the usb driver. Open the folder, and then open android_winusb.inf in an editor. (I used Notepad++)
7. In the .inf file, scroll through [Google.NTx86] and find your device name. Replace USB\whatever with the first hardware ID in the list from step 5.
8. Do the same in [Google.NTamd64]

I had to install the Google USB android drivers from the SDK as well. Without these, I spent hours trying to get it to work. The b&n drivers alone were not enough.

Yes I have to apply both methods in order to have the adb command to recognize my Nook HD+ device ID.
I'm using windows 7 x64.
Sorry. I assumed if you had adb you would have the SDK and Google drivers as well.
On previous devices, adb.exe and a few DLLs were enough.

I did have to deviate from the instructions a bit to get it working though.
1. In the INF file, I had to use the *second* line from Hardware Id's, not the first. The value that worked for me in the INF file is:
%CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_18D1&PID_6860&MI_01
The first Hardware Id's line has a "REV_02" in it; Windows would not accept the driver with that in it. Took that part out and it worked!
2. Instead of updating the driver in Device Manager from Portable Devices, I had to update the "BN NookHD+" that was listed with a yellow symbol under "Other devices." Then I got the expected Android Phone -> Android Composite ADB Interface device to show up in the list.
3. ADB at first listed the device as "offline." I had ADB working on stock and didn't realize that the newer version of Android has an extra security check. I actually had to Google it to realize that I just had to unlock the tablet and hit "Accept" on a dialog box on the device! After that, it went from "offline" to "device" and all was well.
What's a bit strange is that before ADB listed a random bunch of letters and numbers (a device ID I guess?). But now it lists the Nook as 012345679ABCEDEF. I'm guessing that's just how it works under CM10.1? I suppose it hardly matters.
The bottom line is that I got it to work, thanks to this thread. Nice!

That's just me being lazy and not gettin around to pass around serial number yet.

Hehe, figured it was something like that. Is there any downside to not having the real serial number returned? Doesn't seem to cause any issues that I've seen.

Do you see a device category in Device Manager called Android Phone? On my system, I see that and under that is a device called Android Composite ADB. Both times I've set it up, it wouldn't show up in ADB until I got to the point where that device showed up in the list.
If you do see that device, I suppose you could try "adb kill-server" before "adb devices" just for grins.

Dunno, but 6/30 release added that. I imagine some apps might be using serial number for things like ensuring you don't steal stuff, also google play probably uses that to distinguish between several identical device you might have
If you are running the latest Carbon B11 emmc, and are wondering why you can't get "adb devices" to show your device, you need to insert a line to:
%userprofile%\.android\adb_usb.inf
add: 0x2080
Without this, ADB will not recognize a device with a B&N VID.

I followed all the steps. I got the device connected. When I tried to sideload a stock rom zip, I get an error. "failed to write data protocol fault <no status>". What can I do to fix it?

What do you mean sideload a stock rom zip? Sideloading is for apps.

I had bokbokan's hybrid running on nook hd+. I saw an experimental version of cm10.2 and wanted to give it a try. I thought that since I can boot to stock and cm, I don't need to go back to my original bn rom. So, I deleted my cm10,1 zip from my internal storage and replaced it with cm10.2. I turned off my tablet, took out my sd card with hybrid and rewrote it with cwm for sd cm10.2. The cm10.2 updates but doesn't work when you reboot. When I turned back on, my nook gets stuck on infinite loop cyanogenmod logo instead of booting to stock . Clockworkmod shows that I have a backup but when I try it says "no files found." I have backups for original bn rom and a cm version on my pc. But since there is only 115 mb space left on my sd card after writing, I can't copy my 1+ GB back up files. I was searching on google and I came across how to update rom using adb sideloading and was trying that. That's where I get this error message. Is there any way for me get out of this mess and go back to cm? :crying::crying::crying:

I read your post and went through 15 pages to see if you wanted me to find anything specific. But I'm not sure what I should look for. I tried step 1 and step 2 from your post. When I tired to sideload app, I get "errors:closed" (attached image). I don't know what to do :crying:. My sdcard has CWM based recovery V6.0.3.2 for hybrid. When it is inserted, I boot to recovery. I wanted you to respond on my HD/HD+ Tips thread, that is why I posted the answer there. I don't want to clutter this thread with non ADB things. Continue this discussion on my thread.
It is not broke. Make the CWM SD as detailed in item 1a. Then use that to restore your stock backup.

I recently installed the CM10.2 ROM on my Nook HD (I don't mind living dangerously!) To my surprise, I found that ADB worked out of the box, and the Nook showed up as MyNook in Windows Explorer and in Device Manager (under Portable Devices). However, after I installed the Eclipse+ADT bundle on my PC yesterday, ADB over USB stopped working, although I could still use ADB over wifi and could still open MyNook in Explorer.
So I thought I would try the instructions in the above post to repair ADB over USB. Everything seemed to work fine, there were no error messages, and ADB over USB is indeed working again. BUT, the MyNook Device Manager entry under Portable Devices has disappeared, to be replaced by an Android Composite ADB Interface entry under Android Phones, and the Nook no longer appears in Windows Explorer. In Devices and Printers it appears as a camera icon labelled "MTP" - strangely, as of course the Nook HD doesn't have a camera.
Does anyone have any suggestions for how I might get everything working again? Or would I be best to use System Restore to go back to how things were before?
My PC is running Windows 7 SP1 Home Premium.

I have now solved this. I disconnected the Nook HD, disabled the Android Composite ADB Interface in Device Manager, and reconnected the Nook. Windows 7 installed the drivers, and the Portable Device entry reappeared in Device Manager, this time called "BN Nook HD" rather than "MyNook" (an improvement!). I then re-enabled the Android Composite ADB Interface, and everything is now working. The Nook is visible in Windows Explorer; ADB is working via USB; and the Nook's icon in Devices and Printers is now that of a portable media device - it's still labelled "MTP", but I can live with that.

FWIW, I just installed ADB on my Win 8.1 PC and found that the entry needed in android_winusb.inf for the HD+ running official CM11 is:
