This update.zip will flash clockwork recovery, overwriting the need/ability to use the stock recovery folder with command in it.
For advanced users only.
v.8 Download: http://www.mediafire.com/?dvleg4oatkfxm7w
The credit for this all goes to Bekit for the biggest step forward on the Gtablet, and obviously Koush for the custom recovery to begin with. Roebeet packaged this update.zip.
Instructions:
1) Unpack download to root of sdcard. (Internals /sdcard, NOT /sdcard2)
2) Start tablet while holding volume + and power. (Let go when you see text come up saying entering recovery)
3) You will see a short installation and it will reboot.
4) Check the install by powering off, the powering on with volume+ and power
5) You should be greeted by a menu with Clockworkmod at the top
i have been using clockwork on my gtablet for several days now. it backs up and restores just like i would expect it too.
well done as usual.. props for all involved.
Works great no problems at all !!!
wishlist:
1. add SDCARD2 to the mount and storage section.
2. ... wait that is it.!
Should I be able to take this file and rename to update.zip, put it in the root of "sdcard" internal space, put the recovery folder in root directory too and then boot up with power + volume up to install this?

Or just extract the zip file supplied in the first post onto the sd card. Everything will go into its place. Then boot from recovery using power and volume+.
So, if I place the cwm update.zip and recovery folder in the root of sdcard (internal), then when I boot into recovery, CWM will show up instead? Just want to know if it really is that simple. Also, if I want to flash a new ROM (Like the zpad one), do I simply place the update.zip from that rom anywhere other than the root of "sdcard", and flash using CWM?
One last question, if I delete the CWM update.zip, is it like CWM was never placed on my g tab?
Am I the only one having trouble getting cwrecovery on the root of sd card? cant get this to run. i am a visual learner and reading how to do all this is helping me very little. if anyone would be willing to do a video or reference me to a link so i can learn to do all this, i would appreciate greatly. this is very frustrating tab stock!
hey this might help you get it installed..
plug your gtablet into your computer, then on the gtablet, click the "enable usb storage connection" button
then on your pc, open windows explorer, and open removeable drive F, the letter may be different for you.. it should show 13gb free on it, and there should be an android folder and a dcim folder.. that's the root of the storage inside the tablet.. it's the same as sdcard.. unzip the clockworkblahblah.zip to the root/top level directory of that removeable drive. then turn the tablet off. and then hold down the volume + button while powering it back on, it should install the clockworkmod recovery manager.. that's about it
jw52637 don't feel bad... I'm a visual learner as well.
uncola,
I followed your instructions and I saw the update install on boot up. Now I'm lost. I expected to see and application named ClockworkMod Recovery or something like that... but I did not. How do I know it is installed and how do I use it to back up my stock ROM? Also, do I remove the "update.zip" from the root directory or just leave it there?
Sorry for the questions but I want to learn how to do this so I can stop bothering you guys.

ClockWorkMod Recovery is the recovery system...so you have to boot your tab into recovery (hold volume + and power the tab up). If installed, you'll get the ClockWorkMod Recovery instead of the stock recovery system. You can make backups, do restores, install .zips, etc... from there.....then "reboot" the system to boot back to your normal system.
Thanks tcrews. I moved the update.zip from the root directory to a saved directory then rebooted holding the volume + key and it booted into ClockWorkMod Recovery. I chose back up and everything seemed to backup fine.
So if/when I install another ROM and I do a restore to the ROM I just backed up I should be right back to where I was at that time. I have used Titanium Backup to back up all my applications and settings and know I would have to restore them also.
I'm just wanting to understand how I can get back to "stock" so that I can get the automatic updates from Viewsonic.
Well i just tried it all again, and all worked very well. Thank you very much
Ok, I'm totaly new to this so please bare with me, having some troubles with my G tablet NOT booting so I cant access it through Windows to install CW to fix my tablet. How can I get the Files on the tablet? I can get it to attempt recovery but no luck. PLEASE help. I'm pulling my hair out here.

There is a physical reset button inside the device, or you can try ADB.
I cant get the recovery image to find update.zip
I have clockwork recovery gtab-cwm-v08 installed and renamed to update.zip in the root of the internal sd but when i boot into recovery it goes to the android screen then shows a triangle with a exclamation point, then reboots normally!
I rooted with z4root 1.2.1
I have superuser permission so am rooted!
Unrooted then rooted again figuring this might help!
Tried a few different clockwork recoveries
have no idea what the problem is! if anyone has any clue it would be appreciated!

Had that happen to me. What I did was run the CWM again into the gtab. Next reboot I had CWM insgtalled and working.
Hope that helps
CWM 0.8 is the one that I used and is working for me. I have the gTab w/the "original" partition scheme, and installed it by the original gTab update process.
If you're using newer CWMs I've read posts in the CM6b4 thread that newer CWM version seem to be causing problems for some people.
Also if you have a "newer" "batch" gTab w/a different partition map scheme you might want to check what the latest info is on the IRC channel, #tegratab on freenode IIRC. Might be quickest to ask for help there anyways, as it sounds like this probably isn't your problem.
Hi all, I'm traing to install a fix, and clockworkMod recovery can't mount /sdcard.
do anyone have a clue on how to fix this?
tks!
I am also having this issue,
i'm using an 8G and 2G sd cards, tried to format them through the computer and through the phone but with no luck
i'm using clockwork recovery 2.5.1
try making a folder on your sd card, clockworkmod.
tried that, and it started working for me, dunno if it was a coincidence though.

I had the same problem. I think its due to the original JRDNEM_U3_2.59.0 sbf.
SO... Use this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853674
When choosing your firmware select the Nordic 2.2.2 (Froyo) version [JRDNEM_U3_3.4.2_177-005]. Then re-root using : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=913709
Then you should be able to mount sd card in CWM.

Please tell me how you installed CM7 on the Defy.
I've been trying to install a custom ROM (CyanogenMod) all day on my phone but now I'm pulling my hair out by the clumps. This seems to be one stubborn device to play with. My desire didn't give me any trouble at all.
Please help with the following queries I have:
I have installed 2nd init boot and then was accessing clockworkmod through that.
But when I try backing up my ROM I get the error "cannot mount /sdcard".
On the defy if I press up and power on I get the default bootloader with battery check. I can only get into clockworkmod from the recovery app.
On my desire, I can directly boot into ClockworkMod Recovery by pressing up and power button. I don't remember now how I got t to do that, but I would like that in my Defy too. I suppose this will solve the sdcard problem?
What must I do to install a custom ROM on defy??
EDIT: I followed the cyanogenmod wiki at first and in their method I got stuck at the cp -R command, where I got the error "cannot stat, no such file or directory found" or something like that. I'm at my wits' end here, please help me!

This is hell annoying but simple solution worked on LGO2X. Reinsert SDCARD while in Recovery. It should work in all devices. Nothing stupid to try. Tell me...
It is because you formated your sd card with some other file system. Just go to settings / sdcard and storage . Unmount your sdcard and format it. It will get mounted in cwm from now on .

but how??? its UNDER the battery!!!
Still Can't mount sdcard, after formatting and creating folder on sdcard
phone and software details:
ClockWorkMod Recovery v2.5.1.8
Motorola Defy Eclair, OS 2.1, kernel 2.6.29
SndInitDefy_2.0.apk (Defy 2ndinit)
Android Bootmenu v0.6.1
USB Debugging is NOT on when I reboot.
I formatted the card, remounted it in normal operation, then tried going into the Android Bootmenu and mounting the sdcard, formatting it, backup but none of them worked b/c it couldn't mount the sdcard.
I also tried doing the same thing, but not remounting it in normal operation and shutting it off to no avail.
I also tried adding the folder: /sdcard/clockworkmod but with no luck.
Specifically, when do Custom Recovery, then in ClockworkMod Recovery, do backup and restore and do backup, I get the error:
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0{
(No such file or directory)
Can't mount /sdcard
This particular version of the OS makes rooting very difficult. z4root doesn't work as it exploited some security feature that was figured in the firmware update. Since I have a mac, even after using mono, I was not able to get SuperOneClick working (it hangs on "waiting for device"). So the only way I found to root was from this post:
[ROOT] G2x Easy Root for Mac and Linux

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'd love to be able to get a nandroid backup and then use CM 4.03 for Motorola Defy:

Same issue on Galaxy S Plus
Have to same situation here with a Galaxy S Plus (9001). Everything works great mounted on the stock rom, but not in clockworkmod. Card is formated as FAT32 with clustersize at 1024 bytes. It's another phone but it might be the same issue ... Reinsert card while in recovery doesn't work, it reboots the recovery I think. Putting a folder 'clockworkmod' on the sdcard also doesn't work.

Hi fellow Android lovers
I'm still not sure how to make a proper backup of my completely stock A500 (HC 3.0.1).
My plan is:
1. Root with Gingerbreak
2. Install Acer Recovery Installer App
3. Backup my Recovery with the app
4. Install CWM with the app
5. Make a Backup with CWM
Is this a good/correct way to make a backup ?
What would be the best way ?
Thanks a lot for any useful input

Yes. This is EXACTLY what you should do but with a step 6 added.
Make a copy of your shiney new backups to seperate storage, such as your PC.
Cool ...
Thanks for answering.
Of cause I will safely store that backup on my PC.

I have rooted the device and installed the Acer Recovery app. Where's the backup function ? I can do the restore but how do I backup the device and cw install?
thanks,
you have to reboot into clockwork mod . Recovery .. then in there you can choose backup/recovery
Another thing to try and remember, if/when Acer Recovery updates with a new version of CWM - when you are putting this version on your device and updating recover, don't backup - it will overwrite your "stock" recovery backup with the previous CWM backup (which is likely not really needed with the new version of CWM) - leaving your only way back the final Acer Recovery option of "use stock <whatever version is included with that version of Acer recovery but may not match your recovery version>"
Learned that the hard way

Hi,

I take no responsibility for any harm that comes to your phone as a result of applying this mod.
unofficial Clockwork Mod Recovery 5.0.2.7 for u8800pro and u8800 [upgrade to offical 2.3 GB]
Installation Instructions (upgrading - root explorer method):
Using any file explorer which is able to remount as writeable (such as root explorer), browse to the /cust_backup directory and remount it as writeable
Navigate to the image directory and backup up the current recovery by renaming it to something like recovery.bak, or _recovery.img
Rename the downloaded recovery to recovery.img and copy to the image directory.
Installation Instructions (new install):
Unplug any usb connection and turn the phone completely off
Whilst holding both the volume + and volume - keys hold the power button to turn the device on. Let go when you see a pink/purple screen.
Attach the usb cable to your computer and wait until a few usb mass storage devices are detected and mounted. Look for one that has just one directory called 'image' in it. Navigate into this directory and you'll see recovery.img etc.
(optional) Rename recovery.img to recovery_backup.img
copy the new recovery.img to image, unmount the mass storage device (safely remove in windows) and then pull the battery out to turn the phone off.
Hold volume + and power to boot to recovery.
Install any custom rom
change:
mod the kernel,Ums is worked now
use zte u880‘s charge png
can install zip from emmc and use emmc backup&restore
add ext4 fs support
about SDcard
if you can't mount SDcard in recovery,do this:
enter "advanced"--"Reboot Recovery"
then you could use the SDcard
ps:this is issue of offical GB,not recovery!

Tested on u8800 and works very good. SD card sometimes can't mout properly, but i guess it's not an issue from CMW.

Was it a backup you did with this CWM version? Or with the stockwell's CWM? The old backups don't work with this one I believe.

Hmm, I tried to restore my backup from yesterday done with stockwells 5.0.2.6 recovery and my phone got ****ed up. I know I shouldn't have done this but I just had to try. xD Now I can't get past the Huawei logo, when I push the power the phone starts but just turns off after couple of seconds. I can get to bootloader (pink screen) but not to recovery. I hope no one else has tried this and I hope I get my phone working again.
Would anyone have any advice how to get my phone back up and running? Or should I just go bring it to warranty support?
have you tried to replace the recovery.img from this topic again? that happened to me too when I tried to go back with CWM v4 but then I replaced with this
I had CM7 SD running on my 4gb sandisk. today I decided to try MIUI on emmc. to install it I did wipe/factory reset. now my CM7 SD doesn't run after the green logo.
on mounting I saw the following:
mmcblk1p1: all boot files present (THIS IS SDCARD ON MIUI)
mmcblk1p2:EMPTY
mmcblk1p3:EMPTY
mmcblk1p4: CM7 sdcard files present.
I did saw it show "formatting sd-ext" in CWM when doing factory reset.
now I don't have any SD card reader. is there any way to copy files of verygreens method back to sdcard from within MIUI as all partitions are already present.
Please help! my dad works on this nook. :|
P.S. through miui I'm also unable to boot into CWM emmc. tried using reboot into recovery and 5sec home button method.
thanks again. without you guys I'm pretty doomed.
UPDATE
I thought flashing MIUI caused problems with CWM so I tried to install CWM using ROM manager in MIUI but it cannot flash.
Looks like you wiped ur /system and /data partitions on ur SDcard rom. Only suggestion is to reinstall ur CM7 setup from scratch using verygreens method. It seems that your boot partition is still intact so you should be able to reinstall your CM7 through recovery mode as stated in his thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
How to update to a new build:
put the new build you want to try on the first partition. (the name must be update-cm-*.zip or cm_encore_full*.zip or just update-*.zip)
Boot from the SDcard in the recovery mode (see below) and the new snapshot would be installed.
The partition layout would be preserved, filesystems are NOT reformatted, so your data should be safe.
Insert the uSD card back into the NOOK and boot into "Recovery mode" (hold nook N key and then press and hold power until the "Loading..." message appears and then disappears with screen going blank. Release power button, then press it again and hold for ~5 seconds, the bootloader "Loading..." message should be on the screen for three seconds or so before you release power button, keep holding N button until screen blanks again. If the screen went off while you were holding the power key, that means you were holding it for too long).
Alternatively if you do not want to fight the timing, boot normally into Android, then from desktop hold power key until a poweroff menu appears, In the poweroff menu choose "reboot", in the next menu choose "recovery" and press "OK". The nook would reboot straight into recovery.
How to install market and gapps:
After you have booted into the CM7 on SD card for the first time and set up wifi access (important!)
Go to http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.ph...Latest_Version and at the end there is a table with various google apps versions. Get the one suitable for your cyanogen version (CM7 is the latest for now). The file is named gapps-....zip
shutdown your nook and take the SD card out, insert it into your computer.
Copy the gapps-... file to the SD card on the first partition (titled boot) without changing the file name. And boot into "recovery mode" (see above)
Click to collapse
Just boot into your MIUI rom and mount the /boot partition of the SDcard rom, which would be SDcard in MIUI to your PC/Mac/Linux and follow the directions above to reinstall your CM7-SDrom using verygreens method.

Thank you!
I got it to work using your steps.
But there's a weird thing. Even though the mmcblk1p2/p3 partitions were empty when I mounted them in MIUI, but my settings/apps/launcer/widgets were all intact. And its not like I just booted into CM7. I did see that tux penguin install script (verygreen) install CM7.
Anyways, thanks again.

I think I blabbered too fast.
Today I found out that even though the wallpaper/apps were the same, I lost the app data and had to again add my Google acc.
Any idea which partition mmcblk1p2 or mmcblk1p3 was wiped out? Just curious to know what does CWM wipe out when it says "wiping sd-ext"?
