All of the rooting guides and searches I've found say the NST must be registered prior to taking any of the rooting steps.
Is there a way to root the device and then register it later? (i.e. Skip OOBE steps, root, register)
The reason I ask is I plan on giving the gift of a rooted nook and the person who's going to get it already has a B&N account. Thanks in advance.
Dundir,
Registering with B&N is not mandatory prior to rooting. I just don't know if it can be done later on, but I don't see any reason why it couldn't be done.
After rooting you/the other person can run the app "Oobe Reg".
This way worked for me

Hi,
I'm hoping someone can give me some advice. I'm not very technically minded, and this is my first Android handset.
Like an idiot, I upgraded to 1.72 shortly after it was released. I got the usual text notification problems. As of this morning, my third SD card has failed since the update.
First of all, I know people have had issues with the card unmounting, but has this actually resulted in damage to people's cards? All three of mine have became unreadable shortly after I started getting the 'SD card unexpectedly removed' message.
The issues are now started to really hack me off, and so I've been looking in to downgrading to 1.32. I've found several guides on how to do this, and with regards to rooting. My question is, do I have to root it to downgrade?
I've found one guide where it goes through downgrading first (creating a temproot?), and then says that performing the steps to root the device afterwards are voluntary. Is this the case?
Also, if I end up having to root, etc will I lose access to any apps, such as Market, etc
Thanks for your help.

i beleve HTC has had to replcace many SD Cards, because they have been damaged due to the update. i don't think you need to root to downgrade, infact, on the 1.72 software version, you have to downgrade to root, so if you follow the downgrade and root sticky in the android developent section, and just stop after the downgrade procedure, before you root
Hi Andy,
You cannot root 1.72/75. You need to create a Goldcard and downgrade before you can root.
The SD Card problem HTC know about, contact them and explain what has happened. You should get a replacement, maybe even for all three.
Rooting a 1.32 ROM is easy and undo-able, It does not affect app such as Market, GMail, etc... All it allows is read/write access to system files, nothing more.
S-OFF (Security OFF) on the other hand will break any attempt to upgrade via an OTA.
EDIT: Beat me too it!
Ah that's great. So I should be able to simply downgrade back to 1.32 without having to root, and everything will be just as it was when I bought the phone?
Hi everyone,
I'm brand new to the world of androids (just got a galaxy S4 for verizon) and I'm looking to root it and do...other cool things with it. However, I really have no idea where to start. I'm thinking to follow the following guide to root my phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2290798
Then what's next? What I want to is to be able to optimize my battery, get rid of junk apps first. Then maybe have some widget button that can toggle wifi/4g easily? Not really sure what to do after rooting, but I want to have an understanding of what to do after following that guide. I don't know how if I'm supposed to install a ROM after, a CWM (not really sure what that is) etc. Are there any step-by-step guides of what to do after following that rooting guide I linked above? I'd appreciate any help guys!!
I would just get it rooted so you can kill ads and other basics and read up on the various possibilities. Check all the stickies in each section and go through those tutorials of which there are many. You don't need to read every word just get yourself an idea of what is possible. Once you have an idea of what you can do you are going to have a better idea of what you want to do.
Your link 404ed for me so I'm not sure which way you were going with that. IMO for a beginner starting with chainfires autoroot is probably your easiest most foolproof way to root. An alternative is to install a pre rooted stock rom as those are starting to show up now. The threads for each have detailed installation instructions
It can wait for a bit but if you are going to stick with Android and are the type that plays with roms I would highly recomment getting titanium backup. The pay version is more useful so I would cough up, once you figure out how much easier it makes swapping roms you wont regret spending that ching. Also consider getting a root file application. I use root explorer but there are other options that work well.
I thought that I could survive without registering, but the day did come. I have rooted successfully several phones but have not fiddled with Samsung before and was not so familiar with the models. I checked the phone model too busy and remembered wrong it to be i9505. Too bad i noticed the mistake after using the motochopper, when trying to find correct CWM. It was an i9506. The phone is working fine, but the su requires updating. I used root checker and not surprisingly "not rooted". After noticing my mistake I would not want to do anything before getting some advice. I have a linux and using of the odin is not possible, at least without visiting some of my friends. Too bad I could not find any help without posting. Can you please suggest how to proceed to prevent bricking and even eventually rooting the phone? If I manage to get access to windows, how hazardous is it to proceed from the beginning with the guides for i9506, after failing the rooting? What excatly is there going on at the moment, when super su is installed but does not have root?
Take a look this thread: HERE
Thanks for your reply! I checked the thread all way through. I think that the only solution is to try the basic method of the first post and see what happens. I should have done that in the first place. Luckily the phone has 4.2.2. without knox. I hope that the previous rooting attempt does not interfere somehow. I will visit my friend some day and report the result here.
I promised to report how things sorted out. Everything went smoothly with rooting as I followed the guide here , not a single issue. Although it would probably have worked with heimdall as well, I did not want risk anything and used windows computer of my friend. Thanks for Joku1981! Keep up the good work! Over and out.
Hello everyone,
I am trying to root a SM-T537V, and I am having no success. My end goal is to attempt to run a linux distro on my tablet for fun and to use for my school assignments. I tried KingRoot, which achieved root, but lost it upon reboot. Some more research said this was because the bootloader was locked. I also tried towelroot, and the app seemed to do nothing. I don't mind doing it manually, but I just cant find any steps or information on the process.

Hi there I also have a SM T537 but mine is the AT&T Variant (the other overbearing service provider), I wish I had some advice for you, But I too have only had success in getting temporary root with Kingroot. No other one click rooter has had any success.
My device in question :
Samsung Tab 4
SM-T5337A
Running Android 5.1.1
BUILD # LMY47X.537AUCU1BOJ3
Has any one been able to get permanent root?, or able to point us to the proper thread, or even a “search phrase” to get us on the right path.
Firstly, I apologise for the noob question - I'm finding it difficult to make sense of what is required for rooting this device.
I've tried one-click root, which failed, and that's what has brought me here. I think the best first question to ask (as its a requirement for me) is that with all the options out there - will my phone need to be wiped to perform this rooting? I can't lose the data that's on it.
I keep seeing mentions of using a different ROM, which suggests it might be wiped completely.
If not, and it can be rooted without wiping it, can anyone point me at the best/latest guide for doing this?
TL;DR I just need to root this device to allow a particular app to work - I don't need/want anything else.
Thanks in advance
