This is NOT news I want to hear. Now I'm really considering using my phone for a fishing weight. If we can't ever directly root 2.3.4 on this thing I'm done.

Then you're done.

[Q] Help with Mytouch 4G with Gingerbread 2.3.4

Hello everyone,
Any help you guys can give will be much appreciated.
I have a MyTouch 4G previously running Froyo, rooted and S=Off. Against better judgment, I decided to put this release of Gingerbread 2.3.4 on it:
PD15IMG_Glacier_Gingerbread_S_TMOUS_2.19.531.1_Radio_12.58.60.25_26.11.04.03_M_release_200756_signed.zip
Though everything seems to work fine, I lost root. Contrary to most other accounts from other people who flashed the same file, S=Off remained on my phone.
I would really like to get root back so I can use some of my apps again.
Visionary stops at a black screen.
Gingerbreak runs forever with no success.
What other means can I use to get root back or am I SOL for now until someone figures out how to root 2.3.4 on the MT4G?
Thanks again.
N
From what I could find in the forums, you are kinda stuck till someone comes up with another exploit in order to gain root and s-off
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App
I am stuck in the same situation, except that I updated first to the official gingerbread rom for mytouch 4g and then tried to root my phone, i.e. the phone was not rooted at all.
I'm quite confident an exploit will be (re)written - just a matter of time. It's just that I couldn't use some of my paid apps.

You can go back to 2.2.1 from 2.3.4
I had the same issue then i found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912 follow the G2 method, when you get to the part where you put this in # /data/local/tmp/misc_version -s 1.19.531.1 make sure you put the version you want like 1.17.531.2 not 1.19.531.1 worked for me just did it about 1/2hr ago

I tried flashing a similar 2.3.4 release that is rooted. Renamed it to PD15IMG.zip and tried applying it - At "parsing", it stops and just goes back to the HBOOT menu.

You are mixing up roms and official update zips. You can't just flash a rom thorough hboot. That's not how it works.

lOOK AT WOLF26915's post use the G2 instructions to temp root using the fre3vo exploit in adb then change your version number to 1.17.531.2, then your bootloader will allow you to use the 2.2.1 PD15IMG update to get back to stock and root.

This is the problem with n00bs. You wanna jump head first into something you have absolutely no understanding of then beg for help over and over in here when you finally brick your phone.
Stupid. You FAIL!
So sick of new users of Android trying to jump before looking. You're the same kind of people who would jump off a cliff before checking to see how deep the water is. Then want help after you break your neck.

That was 20 years ago. And yet, even then, when I wanted to know something; I searched and searched and searched, and searched again. Then I read and read and re-read over and over and over again. And after all that if I still didn't know then I would ask. But I would also ask in a proficient manner.
Too many young kids jumping in on the Android bandwagon and wanting to root and flash Rom's right out of the box without learning first.
I stand by my first statement.
If you had Radio S-OFF, you should be able to flash an unsigned PD15IMG.zip even though you lost root.

Interesting. msm_rotator is I believe the exploit used in Fre3vo.
I wonder if this would work to downgrade the HTC Panache from Mobilicity to an MT4G ROM?
I also downgraded back to 2.2.1 then updated to the rooted 2.3.4 and it works

Can't root 2.3.4 but here is an alternative

This is the way I went about rooting the Mytouch running the stock 2.3.4
First downgrade from the stock 2.3.4 to 2.2.1 for rooting.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912
Second use gfree to get s-off.
You need visionary. Second link.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
http://android.modaco.com/topic/320350-19nov-r14-visionary-one-click-root/
Third flash the enh h-boot and recovery.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1200147
Now is the time, if you choose, to backup. Start flashing rom of your choose. There are many 2.3.3 and higher based roms to be back on Gingerbread
Thanks to all the developers for the links.
If this is of help to anyone please just hit the thanks button.
Thanks I guess

That and they don't understand how this phones works. Anything that is done in a "Temp rooted" state will be returned to an OE fashion once the phone is turned off. So even if you do delete it. It'll come back.
I want to temp root because im scared to downgrade and perm root.
Well, looks like you're out of luck. Temp-rooting won't get you anywhere, since the system is protected by the bootloader lock, and without perm-root you won't be able to do anything. As already stated, all you do under temp-root will not stick, and will be lost on first reboot.
So you either give up the idea of messing with the stock OS altogether, or grab the balls to do a downgrade and perm-root. Nothing left in between...
Rooting this particular phone is what makes it really worth having it, IMO, so long as you're comfortable with the process.

Pretty much sums it up. Why would you want to send your AMAZING mytouch to a stranger?
Follow directions. You'll be fine.
you know, if you're so scared too even just root your device, then you'll have MANY more problems later on. cause guess what? after rooting your device doesn't mean everything is safe and easy. it's EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE. rooting your device means giving yourself admin rights to do anything you want to your device, and if you so scared you can't even go through the process of giving yourself those rights, then you shouldn't even be thinking about rooting.
just a thought.
also, do you really trust a stranger to screw around with your phone like that? they won't pay the fee if they break it, YOU are the one that's going to pay.
and of course.... PLEASE POST IN THE CORRECT FORUMS
to be honest... the mytouch 4g is a PAIN in the asss to root.... i mean... gfree method is the best... but downgrading it was a *****.... i did it after a whole day of reading and watching youtube and trying n trying n trying... i mean im an expert now on this device... and i think its one of the BEST phones in the android dev world... considering the amount of development on it... rooting it and using a new kernal rom combo... makes this phone a different device entirely... i might have a SGSII (T989) but this little mytouch kicks ass... n e way, i dont mind helping u out... just learn how to flash roms n kernals ur self... PM me if u want my help
Downgrading is easy: all u need is the PD15IMG.zip. But that's downgrading back to stock. This fone is the best since I've been rooting, back since the G1 days. There is a section for that zip, look into the Rom bible.

if you follow the instructions on the cyanogenmod wiki about htc glacier you can do it. Just make sure to check the MD5 after the download to avoid any issues and bricking problems. I have downgraded and rooted 2 glaciers with that method. Again if you can not trust yourself to do that much on your own I agree with the others you should not be rooting in the first place.
Its really not that hard, there are plenty of instructions on how to do it in these forums. I never did it before, and it took me 20 mins to downgrade and then root. and this was reading the instructions as I went.
Check your chip type first, make sure you have the good one and then just read the forums. You can do it, and if you cant, maybe you shouldnt have it.

HBOOT 2.8 With S-OFF but it still say's i have S-ON
i just put Smelkus Amon Ra-Supersonic-4.3 recovery on it.
it's not letting me post the link because i am a new user and cant post links until i make over 10 post.
But its HTCEVOHACKS Guide for people that need to root HBOOT-2.18.0001
Probably the easiest thing to do is follow the instructions on how to downgrade your Hboot and just leave it at that. You'll lose root and have s-on, and you'll also get rid of the watermark in the bootloader screen that indicates that it's unlocked. Follow the steps in this guide to downgrade your Hboot:

Essentially, s-on is "security on", and vice-versa. Having s-off allows you the ability to flash things like radios to your phone. As far as the stock ROM, there are links to two different stock Sprint ROM's (sometimes also referred to as RUU or ROM Upgrade Utilities) in that thread I linked you to. Just pick one. Since you won't be rooting it again it won't matter, and a Sprint rep won't know that the ROM on your phone isn't the one it came with to begin with.

Along the lines of the original issue, will Sprint activate a rooted phone or do they actively check to see if it's rooted before activating? Just curious b/c I have an extra one I'm selling and it's still rooted.
Yes i have another question too, if i unroot my phone is it perminitly unrooted? Or would i be able to re root it.
Just helpfull for the future if i decide to root whatever phone i upgrade too.

No it's not permanent. You can root again after unrooting. A lot of people will unroot to take their phone in for service or warranty claims and then root it again after it's fixed.
