[Q] NC Stuck in Factory Restore Bootloop - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I found this thread which I followed the directions towards:
http://nookdevs.com/NookColor_Fix_Boot_Loops
Here is my problem:
When i am in putty, I don't have enough time to type in the command before the nooter disk boots up and my putty session becomes inactive.
Does anyone know how to copy and paste the commands into putty, or an alternate way to fix the BootCnt file?
FIX:
I found a fix. I made a bootable image of cwr on an sd card, wiped fresh, then installed new zip.

Can't Wipe SD Ext

Hey everyone,
I just rooted my Hero awhile ago and everything went fine... However, I tried to flash a ROM to it and something seems to have screwed up. It booted once, but it wasn't to the new ROM, it seemed like it was back to factory settings... and now it won't get past the initial HTC logo when I try to boot. I can reach the recovery, but I've tried wiping everything and restoring with Nandroid and still nothing.
I think the problem may be with the wipe. When I wipe data/factory reset, I get "No app2sd partition found. Skipping format of /sd-ext." I'm new at this but I've noticed most ROMs saying that sd-ext needs to be wiped. Is this why I can't boot the phone? Is there a way to fix this?
Thanks.

Yes, that's way.
You need to wipe the ext partition -- most likely the partition that houses Apps2SD.
**This will ERASE everything on the SD Card. Before trying this, you need to back up your sd card (pictures, music, etc) -- meaning, copying all the stuff from the card onto your Desktop or somewhere on the computer before proceeding to the next step.
To do so; go into recovery and choose:
1. Partition sdcard
2. Partition SD
3. Press Home to confirm
4. Set Swap-size to 0 MB (Use trackball)
5. Set Ext2-size to 0 MB (Use trackball)
6. Fat32-size = Leave that to Remainder
7. Press Home to confirm.
This will FORMAT (erase) everything on your SD card, but not the phone. For good measure, I would wipe your phone and Dalvik once more before flashing the ROM again. After its done, you can reboot, mount your SD Card and copy what you saved to the desktop (or wherever) back onto the SD card.
If you want Apps2SD (I'll presume you have a regular 2 gig SD Card), then after wiping both your phone and Dalvik; you'll need to follow the steps above to wipe the Ext partition, but instead of setting your swap to 0, set it to 128. Then set your Ext2/3/4 to 1 Gig (1024 megabtyes) and leave the Fat32-size as Remainder. For larger cards, you can adjust the Ext/2/3/4 partitions to about half the size of your SD Card. (Ex. 4 gig card; set Ext to 2 gigs, leave Fat32 as remainder).
Good luck.
I'm not seeing the partition option, maybe I should've mentioned I'm in Clockwork Mod recovery. Under the partitions menu there is an option to format sdcard, will that have the same effect? I've tried format sd-ext, but of course it didn't work..
Edit: I've reformatted the SD card, but still can't boot, and am still getting the No app2sd partition found error when I select wipe data/factory reset. Is there a way to get to the partition sd option with this Clockwork Mod recovery?

Clockwork Mod? Can you please link where you got this? The only recovery ROM's I'm familiar with are RA 1.3.2, 1.5.2, 1.6.2, and Godspeed. I would highly advise installing the latest RA 1.6.2 or Godspeed recovery images, as the advise myself or anyone else gives you will pertain almost always to those recovery images.
The tutorial I was using to flash the ROM recommended using an app from the app store called ROM manager, which installed the Clockwork mod. I'm attempting now to get RA 1.6.2 on it instead.
What's the best way to install a new recovery ROM? using this one, I can get connect to the pc and get a command window open, but from there what I'm trying doesn't seem to be working.
Problems with sd card
this seems like a good place to ask..after trying to flash a new rom(aloysuis) i hung on the black htc screen. i abondoned that card, inserted my old, reflashed fixxxed on there and its fine. i put my other sd card in that wouldnt work, formatted and copied the working card contents back on it. running fixxxedsense my phone upon loading says "sd card removed, Insert a new one. plug it in and it doesnt give me an option to mount, but when im in recovery mode it lets me mount and see all the contents i put on there. Did i ruin my sd card r is there a problem with the partitions maybe?

It seems the partitions might be the problem.
**If you don't mind erasing everything on your "broken" sd card, please follow the steps below.

After you've done this; your card will have nothing on it. You should be able to use the card again, I would try using it again and see if you can mount it; both in recovery and in regular phone mode.

5. Open command prompt and change directory your androidsdk\tools folder
6. Run the following command(s):
Code:
adb shell
$su (not required if you have root already)
#mount -a (You might get some error messages, [B]keep going[/B])
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img
reboot recovery
After the reboot, you should the new recovery image installed.

If you have a SD Card adapter or a card reader that can read mini-sd cards:
1. Plug your sd card into the reader/adapter; then to the computer
2. Right click on the removable drive in My Computer
3. Choose FORMAT
4. Quick Format is fine
5. After it's complete, close the window and test the card again.
If it fails again or gives error messages, you might have a bad card.
Okay, got the new recovery, partitioned and wiped everything, and am trying to flash the ROM again. Wish me luck
Okay, now I get past the HTC logo, and it seems to be loading the ROM, then it freezes. I've let it sit for around 5 minutes now with nothing, is this normal for the first load of a ROM or should I try to restore my backed up nandroid?
ClockworkMod has a problem with wiping ext. Amon_RA or GodSpeed should work fine.

The first boot can take some time. With that said, 5-20 minutes is usually best to give the intitial boot. If it still isn't booting; redownload the ROM and try reflashing.

Make sure you have Debugging mode on.
To do this (on the phone):
1. Menu
2. Settings
3. Applications
4. Development
5. Make sure USB Debugging has a check in it
Then run the commands again.

[Q] Error Formatting /data

I am currently on HC3.2 Honey Villain 1.2 rooted device. I used to be using Taboonay 2.1 and suddenly went off and reboot with boot loop.
I tried to install other Rom yet, all of them stuck on boot loop. I realized that i cannot format /data as the error came out as
error removing /data/data/com.estrongs.android.pop/lib/libes_dropbox.so
What should i do?
PS: i have been reading this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1126364
and i encounter this
NOTE:
If you encounter a problem with the filesystem on /data like it has become corrupt, place a blank file called "eraseData" (without the quotes) in the clockworkmod folder on your external sdcard or usb storage. This will revert back to actually formatting /data.
WARNING: by doing this you will lose everything that you have in /data/media.
but i dont understand how to do that

If you ran a backup before installing a new ROM, which you should have, all you need to do is create a blank file named "eraseData" (without the quotes) in the clockworkmod folder on your external SD card where you stored your backup. Exactly which part of this don't you understand. Maybe I can help?

Boot reverted to stock

My wife's touch was booting fine into either stock or android but now when it boots there is no option to go to android, it just boots up to the mostly stock nook. The only clue android is still there is button saver which is still there but that's all that shows along with the µsd card.
Again, the touch will not give me dual boot options any more, just the nook.
Any clues or would I have to redo everything?
Thanks
The only real "dual boot" is the selection between normal boot and recovery and you're probably not talking about that.
With a normal boot, it will try to start a launcher.
If you haven't clicked the invisible box yet saying "Remember my preference" it will ask you whether you want to run "Home" or "Launcher".
Once you accidentally or intentionally click that box it won't ask you anymore.
There are tools to fix this or you can do it the lower level way.
The file /data/system/packages.xml holds many things, including this preference.
Find a section like this:
Code:
<preferred-activities>
<item name= ...
...
</item>
</preferred-activities>
And delete the whole thing.
Thanks for the help Renate.
I've hooked the nook to the computer and 2 files come up, one the cards' content and the other, only 4 files, which is the nook rom?
I have data files showing but no system nor packages.xml files. I have no problems editing xml or many other type files but obviously I'm not looking in the right place. Could you show me the way please?
Thank you
The standard USB mounts on the Nook won't get you where you want.
You need to be using ADB or else have noogie running off a card.
You need access to the /data partition where the /data/system/packages.xml is.
I think this was set up with noogie. I can't find a 'data' partition. On the sd card there is no adb and only 2 data files neither of which contain what I need. Something along the way seem to have been lost.
Where might those tools be that you mentioned, perhaps they would work?
Thanks for the help,
Okay, I was a little slow on the uptake. I created a noogie.img card, put it into the nook, plugged into computer usb, waited for it to boot which it did. After booting up I did not see any different partitions. I still only saw the 4 nook files and the contents of the sd card which are the noogie files.
I'll redo the noogie.img after getting a fresh copy but will it work?
Edit: I mounted a fresh copy of noogie.img and it still doesn't work. I can't see the partitions. Not sure if this is relevant or not but when I boot up with the noogie card in as soon as I unlock it I get a pop up saying the card needs formatting and either format or cancel. Of course I hit cancel but should it be doing that?
2nd Edit: I used a different image writer, win32diskimager, and now it boots to a Rooted Forever screen. The only folder/partition showing on the computer is boot: with .pgm and .bin etc files, no other partitions show up.
What else can I do?
Sorry, if you are running noogie and using Windows you can easily only access the VFAT partitions.
Running Linux or installing some EXT2 extensions you should be able to make it work.
If you are rooted, you should be able to use ADB.
If you run Clockwork Recovery you should be able to use ADB.

Nook Color with CM7 - Boot-looping

I changed the Android ID on my Nook Color (with Titanium Backup Pro) and now it is boot-looping, at the point where the arrow head moves around in a circle. It is running CM7, but I'm sure the rom is at least a year old. I think it has CWM recovery. How do I get to recovery and what should I do?
[edit] I found this thread and will see if there is something I can use.[/edit]
I pulled the microSDHD from the device and I can read the boot partition on my PC. Before I attempt repair, I want to copy a few data files from the SDCard's data partition, but I do not see it. How do I mount the SDcard partition so that I can copy the files? I know how to do this once I can successfully boot to the Android desktop, but not without the desktop.
I looked through verygreen's SDCard installation instructions here and I can execute boot into recovery, but that just looks for update files and shuts down. I did not get a menu to allow me to mount the data partition via USB for the PC to read or for any options at all.
I have a bootable SDCard (verygreen's) and removed it to boot from emmc. That works, so the problem is on the microSDHC. When I insert the microSDHC (8GB) card in the card reader on my PC, I see the first three partitions are healthy and the last (5.9GB) is not. The only partition that I can assign a drive letter to is the first partition, Boot. Is there any repair I can do to that forth partition?

Help restoring system image

Hello, I recently had to send in my laptop to get a speaker fixed and was told to make a backup, as the laptop would be reset, I made a system image tested it before I sent it in, it restored fine, but now that I got it back I was no longer able to restore it, it gave me the message "To restore this computer. Windows needs to format the drive that the Windows recovery Environment is currently running on. To continue with the restore, shut down this computer and boot it from a windows installation disk or a system repair disc and then try to restore again." Now the problem is I have tried this, I got hp to send me a recovery disk, but there is no option to restore the system image, it goes straight to resetting the computer it does not have the advance startup options. I have made my own recovery disk using the windows 8 tool and tried, that has the advanced startup options but gives me the same message when in try to restore it. I also have a system image of when i first got the laptop back from them, but i could not restore that either. I have tired near everything ( I just don't want to type out everything I did) any help would be appreciated, If you need anymore details just ask.
Is there at least some way to make a better recovery media, or a windows 8 installation usb? Theres gotta be a way because I know when I tested my image it restored before i sent it in perfectly
What device did you put the recovery image on?
By the way, it's very common and easy to put the recovery tools on a bootable flashdrive; it's included on the install media, so just follow the steps for making a bootable install image on a flashdrive.

Its on one partition of an external hard drive I have, and is what you are talking about above available for win 8.1? Lately I've tried looking for a windows 8.1 iso to make a bootable drive from but cant seem to find one that works. Also thank you for your help
... Huh. If it's on an external drive, then the error you're getting doesn't make a lot of sense anyhow. (But then, I guess you knew that.)
Creating a bootable flash drive is easy. You can either use one of a handful of tools, or just do it manually using diskpart on the command line. Wipe the drive, make sure it's using MBR, create one partition, mark that partition Active, format it FAT32. Then just copy (literally, you can use Explorer for this step if you want) the entire contents of the boot media, such as the DVD, onto your flashdrive. If you don't have a DVD drive to boot from for this part, you can mount the ISO or use 7-Zip to extract the contents of the .ISO file system.
If you *do* have a DVD drive or other bootable media, it should certainly be possible to enter the recovery environment for your OS. The actual steps to restore your backup from there, though, are less clear to me; I've never used the Win8 recovery tools.
I can't find a working iso for windows 8.1, but I noticed that the recovery media I have has the bootx64.efi set up in a weird way which is probably why its not booting into the options I need to restore the image. I tried to make one on a separate USB combining the two I have with the factores image but the boot and efi folders from the other that gives me the options but that would not show up at all to boot into
Thanks for your help, should I mark this as solved
