Android tablet for 100 bucks - Member-Found Deals

Anyone know of an 'ok' android tablet for around 100 bucks? was looking to get the HP touchpad for a brother in law, but he will want apps.
he isn't a computer geek like most of us and can't really figure out how to port android to the touch pad, and probably doesn't need a work horse...
I was thinking something like this link
New MID M709 Google Android 2.2 4GB 7" Touch Tablet PC Silver + Case

I read somewhere that Coby should be coming out with some 7-10 inch tablets that run 4.0 wth a 1ghz processor and 1 gig ram. They should be announced at CES

Few things, it looks as only 3 of the 7 models are up first.. the 4GB at $399, the 32GB at $599, and the 64GB at $699. True multi-touch this time, for all of you
Also, they look to be debuting with Android 2.2 (Froyo) and not Android 3.0 (Honeycomb).
Still the hardware is top notch... I am sure the developers here will have fun with it..

I think they can't sell devices with Android 3.0
Google approved sellings to Motorola Xoom and T-MOBILE G-Slate. Then top companies will go. Other companies must wait till May or June

I had to go back and look at the press material I received at CES 2011 about the eLocity A10. It actually does state that it would be released with Froyo and upgraded to Honeycomb once it is made available to them....
I agree that Motorola and LG seem have been working with Google awhile on Honeycomb and will be the first out of the gate with Honeycomb tablets, then we will see it available on the lesser known brands.

I am watching this one VERY closely
I have two requirements for my next tablet - a Tegra 2 CPU (or better) and an IPS screen. So this one sounds like it fits the bill, assuming it doesn't get delayed into the summer.
I'm tempted by true multi-touch and IPS, but I really like the 7" form factor. It fits in my coat(s) pocket and I can thumb type like a madman. I would like a bigger screen, but you can't have it both ways.
I don't get the 10" form factor. Everybody I know who owns an iPad bought a case that you can prop it up with. I asked why and the answer was it's it's too heavy/akward to hold in one hand and you need to set it down to type on it.
I say don't try to compete with Apple in the 10" range, make an 12" version (8.5 x 11?) and include the prop case with it! To me once it doesn't fit in your pocket and it's too heavy to hold, you really just have a touch screen laptop. It seems that is what every iPad owner I know is turning their's into.

I think they would be wise to make sure this is the case.

Now that Motorola Xoom is priced at $799 and I am sure the LG G-Slate will sell for more with its 3D screen and cameras I am sure people wont mind waiting a few months to have Honeycomb on a nice dual-core unit with a 10inch IPS multi-touch screen with the highest resolution on the market.

Yep. I just notice, that over "approve sellings" i mean Android 3.0 out-of-box.
Google can't deny other companies sell tablets with Android 2.2 and it's a good trick to start sellings before top-companies will go. And promise upgrade, like Notion Ink did.
If Stream TV Network will sell new tablets when Motorla will start Xoom's sellings - people will get choice:
Tablet with 2.2 today for 400$ and upgrade in future
or
Tablet with 3.0 today for 800$
Good business struggle - satisfied customers

Google's Android love and hate!
Funny you mentioned the 3.0 release.
I can see things a couple ways. Like Apple Google wants people to see their OS on a device that can actually use it so they are working with those companies to do so. I can understand they want people to get a good user experience and therefore are pushing to the best retail partners. It helps them and helps the companies by having a release before anyone else.
What I do not understand is the price point. I mean I can get a really nice laptop with a quad core, good graphics, huge hda, etc for $800 so why would I buy a tablet that will do a lot of what I want but not as much as I can with a real pc. Since the masses really only know iPad then wouldn't it make sense to start with 3.0 at a price slightly less than Apple? Offer better equipment or at least just as good and sell for a little less. That way when people try it they will be more apt to buying it. As it is now I paid $300 for my a7 and I could have gotten a Apple iPad for $429 refurb which I think is a really fair price for the unit with its hardware plus a feature rich environment and apps galore and Apples OS is very good. Now comes the xoom for $800??? What. I mean if Honeycomb had been out for a year or so and it was a proven OS with features Apple does not have then I could see it but really they should have at least come in around $500. Personally for me I had a hard time justifying my purchase above $300. I wanted a device I could use to replace a mp3 player with additional features. I already have a laptop and desktop so there is no need for the tab except I do need a portable media player and that is where the A7 and its size fit so nicely.
Add to all of this the system that Google has which is very confusing for a consumer who does not know much about android and not having regular updates from Google but through the manufacturer is a horrid choice!! I think Microsoft got one thing right and that is update the OS without manufacturer involvement. I mean any other OS, MS, Apple, Linux all update their os's independent of what machine it is installed on. Then because Google does not have any control the manufacturers will put out what ever version of Android they have slap it on the device and sell it and if you want a new os you have to buy a new tablet??? Apple iPad does not do this. I can get ios 4.2 for free. This is the same way it should work for Android. Instead you have a huge array of devices for sale all running different versions of Android some of which are outdated before they even start selling.
Because of this situation and the fact Honeycomb seems impossible for the a7 I was seriously thinking of a net book. I mean I can get a 250gb hda, 1.6 ghz 455 atom processor, 1 gb ram, incredible screen for $29 more than my elocity and it will have a full OS with a full browser, not a mobile version, and I can do a lot with it. I could install honeycomb on the netbook!! I did it on my laptop before. I could also install Linux which would run nice and have all I need. Problem again is portability. Netbooks are much better than laptops but not as convenient as the tablet and I find the touch screen interface more intuitive. I think as time goes by it will be the future. However, as things are now with Android and not having it on a phone but strictly for tabs the experience is not what I thought it would be. For a linux based os I do not have much control and that is not good.
Just my 2 cents
Robert
I completely understand the "why not just get a netbook / laptop" argument.
But I think tablets have / will sell for a variety of reasons. Part of it is the "cool" factor, having the latest and greatest. And partly because tablets can do things that laptops cannot (I am in the latter category).
Example for myself: I use my R10 for reading comics -- it easily beats a netbook / laptop in this one function. It's relatively fast, its got great battery life, it's light, generates very little heat and has a better screen. The netbook/laptop kills the R10 in other areas, but it all depends on what you want to use your device for.

Agree totally on this.. Also. People forget unsubsidized cell phones cost $400-$600. Mobile parts are not the same as laptop etc which are much cheaper. Right now even tablets are relying on mobile components. These prices will come down over the next year just as other electronics do. And margin on Laptops/netbooks is horrible. With a new product like tablets companies don't think they need to sacrifice margin yet as these are a "geek" product and we geeks are willing to pay to have the latest and greatest.
The cool factor is a part of it also, and the bleeding technology factor.. I don't think $799 is overpriced for the Xoom, but I do wish it would have started at around $599...
If the eLocity A10 shines, then the $399 price tag will be amazing.. I think StreamTV has learned alot from the A7 release and I am confident they wish to put out a product that will really be a great value.

I happened to be on the J&R website today when, to my surprise, the pre-orders for the A10 opened up!
I bought mine right there - shipped, the cost is $439 - and of course no clear indication when I'll actually get it. Still, the timeline seems firm now, and hopefully I'll see my unit in a few weeks.
Just checked out jr.com and it is there for preorder, but it does not say ips screen. The res is higher than gtab or xoom though. Other than the screen res, it is very similar to gtab. Can someone confirm the screen? is it a ips screen?
It has a sim card slot? can we ue a sim card like tmoblie to make calls or data?
thanks in advance.

The CES models had an IPS screen. Everything I've read (so far) mentions an IPS screen. Of course that could have changed, but I guess we'll find out soon.
I'm also not sure if all models will have a SIM slot, so J&R's info could be faulty.
EDIT: From the source, here you go: http://www.elocitynow.com/docs/pr_2011_0204.pdf
It's an IPS screen.
Yes. As the press release says it has an IPS screen.
Now, about the SIM card slot. In the materials I go at CES 2011, it said they would have one, but no mention is made in the press release. I am going to find out on this one.
About JR.com preorder. The device is supposed to be $399 for the pre-order. So they are charging about $30 more. But also, it wasnt supposed to go live until Feb. 15th. I wonder if the price will drop then.

B&H Photo lists it at $428 plus shipping, so it seems the pre-launch buzz was off.

Best price on the 101?

Whats the best price anyone has found the 101 at? I found it for $298 at some Mac mail order company but they were out of stock. I wanted to get my woman on for Valentines Day but I really didnt want to pay over $300 for it.
I got mine for $298 with free shipping and a $25 gift card from J&R bringing it to $273...but that was during the holidays and I had to wait like 8 weeks to get it.
Yea, J&R is out of them again.
After searching for a place that just had them in stock for weeks, I finally was able to order one direct from archos yesterday. I am receiving the 8gb model today . It was 299.00 plus 30.00 for overnight shipping.
In December Amazon had them for $299.. free shipping.. I wouldn't pay more than $350.
I got mine off Amazon last week for $349.99 for 16GB with overnight shipping for $3.99 (shipping cheap due to my Prime membership). The next day they was up to $415.99.
So do I win a prize for getting mine for only $273? Seems I got the best price of the people that frequent this forum.
I think the Archos website store is now the best deal.. 101 16G for $349
https://store.archos.com/archos-internet-tablet-p-5005.html
It seems the demand is so high for these that they can't make them fast enough.
I have done a lot of research on Android tablets and the Archos 101 definitely gives you the most bang for the buck! There are a lot of cheaper tablets out there, but they don't have capacitive touch displays and/or cut corners on other specs. Even with the newer tablets coming out that have Honeycomb and dual core aren't as good of a deal.. $700 for a tab is way too much.. worth buying an Archos 101 now and waiting a couple of years for the newer dual core tabs to come down in price.

Yeah, but then there will be something new like Android Pudding version and quad core processors tablets which will make a dual core running Honeycomb seem stupid and slow.
If you want cutting edge you are going to have to pay the price (which will be $700-900) or you have to come to the stark realization that the cutting edge isn't that much sharper than the other edges. In which case the Archos 70 and 101's are the biggest bang for the buck in in the near future.
I got it from 270€ at Madrid, Spain, from an Archos wholesale.

And Bill Gates said that no computer will every need more than 640k RAM! But I keed, I keed....
Honestly, I gave up trying to predict where technology will go because I am always wrong. Back in the day I said the internet will fail because who on earth would pay money to do what you can already do for free with BBS systems? I thought the iPad would fail for the same reason many did...it was just a big iTouch, what's the point? I thought Netflix wouldn't last because isn't it easier and more satisfying to just get your video when you want it, the day you want it, etc instead of having to "plan out" your entertainment and hope you feel like that kind of movie the day it arrives?
So yeah...it's easier to say you don't see it going past dual core, but seriously...who would have ever thought a phone would need dual core as well...yet they are coming.
Never underestimate the power of people who want to be parted from their money just to have something better than their neighbors and friends.

New A500 coming out

Not sure if this is news to you lot but was chatting to my sis in-law today who works in acer here in Taiwan and she says a totally new A500 is coming out at the end of the year. She didn't have many details (not her dept) but she said there would be a lot of changes. Couldn't get anything else out of her she's a bit slow on the tech stuff so don't ask me
Just a heads up to any who knows someone thinking of purchasing, maybe hold off til the new year.
I don't doubt it. It's about teh right time for all these companies to bring out the next generation ( Like the Asus Transformer Prime)
I've just ordered by Acer as the price has plummeted now and I picked up 16gb model for £240 new and will be happy enough with it. better than waiting for new model and paying £200 more for it

It will probably have a keyboard built in like asus following their footsteps for sure. If I can go back I would buy 10" laptop for the price and I can do a lot more with that then a tablet.

I thought the same thing and bought an Acer Aspire 10 inch netbook with 2 gigs of ram and a 320 gig hard drive.
But the screen resolution does not compare if you want to watch movies and the android is faster.
I bought it thinking it was less expensive since it had a keyboard and I could install windows programs.
I already had one tablet.
I use the tablet 95 % of the time.
I was wrong in thinking the netbook was a better buy for the money.
I did however purchase it as a special deal for $350. and got over $150. back because it took so long to come. Shipping kept changing the delivery date so I kept complaining. So it was a good buy.

A netbook is not going to do more than a tablet, infact it does less. A fullsize laptop however is a different story.

She was pretty positive it was the a500. But thats obviously another possibility.
As far as netbooks they suck.I found the best of both worlds.I bought a 11.6 inch HP dm1 with the new and APU. I never usemy desktop no morehas all the power for anything.and can get 7 hours on a charge for average use. Web browsing and word processing. 4-5 hours video stuff. This vision CPU with fusion tech Rocks.8 gig ram 500 gig hard diskand all the other kewl stuff Chics love well geeky ones.
With that said I love the tablet while traveling waiting at doc offices and sitting on couch surfing/reading.my spouse lol at me laying on couch with laptop on my legs and tablet on the laptop well notebook keyboard.
Tablets with a slide out keyboard I think would be to bulky and hard to hold.especially 10 inches. 10 inches is to much for my hands without the keyboard extra.
I stop rambling now.
giggles
The whole thing about using a tablet is that it's instant-on/instant-off. Press the power switch, your app loads and you're ready to go in seconds. Netbooks and laptops can do more ... but press the power button, wait for it to boot, maybe unsuspend, wait for your browser to load, network to connect, and so on. I use my A500 a LOT simply becuase I can quick do something and then be done with it and move on with life. I'm using me netbook a LOT less since I got my A500.

Asustek To Price New Tablets At NT$13,500-NT$18,000 $449

TAIPEI -(Dow Jones)- Asustek Computer Inc. (2357.TW) said Wednesday it will launch two new tablets running on the Android 3.2 operating system, with a price range of NT$13,500(US$449.5)-NT$18,000.
The company said the new tablets use Nvidia Corp.'s (NVDA) Quad-core processors and are upgradable to the Android 4.0 operating system, also known as the ice-cream sandwich platform.
It said the new tablets will hit the shelves in December.
The company said it will also sell a detachable dock for the tablet that will cost NT$3,000.

argh there's so many conflicting stories out there right now, i don't know what to believe anymore. so was that their big announcement?
so we might have to wait until december and it still launches with hc?
This goes in android general not eee pad transformer general also there are about 50 bazzilion other threads about this already

Ebay shenanigans

Seeing how hostile are Netflix and Amazon prime to almost all Android tablets (no HD resolution), I decided to pick up one of old cheap Android tablets that are whitelisted in the Netflix FAQ. I figured, I could pick up a Shield tablet for less than a hundred bucks to be a gym companion, and this is the result of the first auction I tried to bid on. This is insane, who are these people?
Paying almost full MSRP for such an old device. lol
The Shield was a pretty unique device. An Android tablet designed for gaming, made by a respected manufacturer of gaming video cards. Still folks looking to buy it, as you can see. I might be still using it, if I hadn't cracked the screen (and replacements pretty much impossible to find).
Doesn't help that there are hardly any decent Android tablets coming out anymore. $650 for the Samsung Tab S4 (or $550 for the two year old S3) is just laughable.
But yeah, for the price in your screenshot; you're probably better off buying a Asus Zenpad.
What redpoint73 has said. When you consider the hardware, for under 200 it's still a very solid performing tablet and not really selling itself hard on frills. The downside is that Nvidia no longer produces them, so there's a finite amount of them and they are desired.
I've seen them going for around 200-250 on average.
Here something interesting samsung going to release new tablets
1. Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e with Snapdragon 670 4GB Ram 64GB, 6GB Ram 128GB price maybe $400
2. Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 2019 model with Samsung Exynos 7904 processor 2 or 3GB Ram 32GB Internal Storage and might cost $179-200
Both support Android 9.0
Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e Video

Try Let go or offer up. I just bought a Mint condition shield tablet, shield controller, plugs and mini HDMI to regular HDMI for 50 bucks!
Bought my son a k1 a few years ago for well over $200. Gotta be almost 3 years now & the k1 is still a great tab. Got a new battery on the way but after almost 3 years that's to be expected. Still handles games, media & anything extremely well. Doubles as a console which is way cool. An extremely durable tablet, my son is 7½. Not updated anymore, it landed on Android 7, which I consider to be one of the best versions, especially for older devices. Anything around $150 for this tablet in good working order, even in the age of Q I think is a good price. Definitely one of the best tablets every imo.
Sold my replacement unopened Shield tab for $350 on ebay earlier this month. Not sure why people are paying so much for a 5+ year old tablet but I cant complain!
