Galaxy Tab IO boot loop - source of issue - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

I've had to restore my Galaxy Tab 10.1 IO twice in the past six weeks due to the infamous boot loop issue. Each time, the boot loop problem occurred when I had to reboot the tablet after it hung on a video. I saw another thread where someone mentioned essentially the same thing. Could there be some bug in the video player that is linked to this boot loop issue? Both times, the video was playing via the Adobe Flash 11 player. Also, I've read some posts that seem to hint that this issue might be specific to 3.1. I'm wondering if this problem will go away after ICS is available for the Galaxy Tab.
Thoughts?

Thought the Tab 10.1 was 3.2 now, mine is.

I'm still on 3.1. Did Samsung fix the OTA update? I just checked this morning for a new update and didn't find one. Wasn't sure what the timeline was for the IO version.

I am going to guess that he did not read that you said specifically the Galaxy Tan IO. We do not have 3.2 and IMHO we will not be getting 3.2.
This is a lost device that I have given up hope will ever be updated again - I mean it was free after all. I am not sure what anyone else has done, but I wonder if I just try and install a TouchWiz based update will my device get updates too? I think assuming it will get ICS is a huge leap of faith too BTW.
Anyway, I have had the boot loop of death multiple times after I left it booted up all night. If I turn it off cleanly, it does not seem to happen. I think what is happening is that some file is being left open when you have to hard power down the device by holding the power key and it gets corrupted. So when you try to boot it fails from that point onward. That is what it seems like anyway.

I'm still hoping for some sort of update, even if it's not OTA. Hopefully someone will create an ICS image for the Galaxy Tab IO. I figured that there are 6K+ of those floating around in the hands of users who would be more inclined than your typical tablet user to install a manual update.
The first time I ran into a boot loop, I did have to do a hard power cycle, but the second time, I shut it down normally and restarted it again. I was really surprised to see the boot loop problem again.

[Q] Boot Loop - IO Edition

I have a Google IO edition Galaxy Tab. I have not rooted the device (I actually haven't had much time to use it at all).I was having the sleep problem where you have to power cycle the device due to it not waking. When I tried doing that tonight, it just went into a continuous cycle on the boot animation. I have tried booting it into the default bootloader screen (power + volume up) with success but when I power cycle again it just continues the boot loop. Anyone else have this problem?
I have this problem as well after I tried sideloading the google books app
It is frustrating! And all my stuff is packed in a moving van (Laptop too) so I can't dig any deeper . I honestly didn't do anything to the Tab (not even sideloading apps). The only way I could get it to turn off was to hold Power + Volume down.
I'm messing around with it now. I was able to get into the recovery menu and do a factory reset but that didn't work. If I figure out anything I'll be sure to post it here. I love how google gave us the fresh new tablet at IO but hate how it was obviously rushed out. I honestly would have been happier if they held off on the release of the tablet until after the conference like they are doing with the chromebooks.
I emailed the Samsung support specifically for this device. If I hear anything from them I'll post.
I found the email on their support site: [email protected]

You could create a flashable update package with a script to remove the apps you sideloaded
Sounds plausible however, I can't even get to adb through my computer
Can you get to fastboot?
Samsung told me to call 888-987-5722 to get help. I called and the guy said they don't have documentation yet for this device and to call back. Wow, maybe you guys will have better luck.

Still no progress so I am sending it in for repairs
Well that definitely sucks but you can't argue with free. They are obviously still working the bugs out for retail release in the next 2 weeks or so, sucks that they arent providing you support right now though.
Any news guys? My tablet is bricked as well
I did it
YES! just restored my tablet from the bricked Inferno
I custom made a system.img based on the images you guys sent me... and it worked
PM me with your DB e-mail... I will share with you guys ASAP
Welcome back my Limited Edition robot...

I really just want update to 1.141.07

So, I'm on my second a500, first one seemed "off", bad battery life, random shutdowns, etc.
now, I understand some issues are fixed with the 1.141.07 update. I desparately run the system update check like a teenage girl waiting for a boy to call. But no dice.
Is there any way to legitimately get the update?
Seems like people were being updated last week and then nothing...... (crickets chirping).
I'm still not very impressed with my second unit. screen on/off thing drives me crazy. I dont think the battery should be draining when in standby. etc.
I know that nobody here works for Acer, so dont flame me. But if I can;t get a reliable android tab, I think I may run back and get an Ipad2 instead. I have had an ipad 1 since release, and I guess i'm spoiled to only needing to charge the thing once a week, and I use it heavily.
I really want a android tab though - I'm a big google person and love having all my stuff in sync and connected. But I dont like having to live next to the power outlet, or wonder when my unit is going to randomly restart. I'm sure there are others in the same boat.
My first one runs great, just bought a second one at Costco with the fabulous deal they have. I have no battery run down issues. Auto brightness, Wifi, and gps all on....except when in for sleep mode. I turn on Airplane mode on and off through a downloaded toggle widget.
I've been using it periodically for 3 days and haven't turned it off. Even started a new book with Kindle. Still have 55% battery.
I'd say you are running a bad app which is the culprit. I bet if you go back to stock reset you won't have the issues, other than sleep without airplane mode.
...and no, we are all waiting for the update or 3.1, whichever comes first. I need it for Exchange, everything else is pretty minor.
I guess I should have mentioned. my first unit, I did a factory reset and ran stock for a couple of days, and still had the same issues.
This new unit is pretty much stock, and only thing I have installed is Flash, Kindle, and File manager HD.I have it running in airplane mode, wifi set to turn off when the screen is off, and screen brightness at about 10%.
I charged it all night, I have used it maybe 3 times today (since 6am), just to browse a couple of sites, and @2:30 today the battery was already @ 40%. it has been in standby most of the day.
I find it hard to believe that 2 different units could perform so poorly.
I really want to love this product, but haivng a hard time doing so, lol
The thing you described should be fixed with the 3.1 update...be patient.

I too am waiting for the .141.07 update. Seems I read that Acer had pulled the updates. Still check every day. I like my tablet and have not seen battery issues with very little standby drain.
The only issue I have is that the WiFi keeps disconnecting. I have checked the advanced settings and it is set at always connected and I have tried changing the channel on my router (suggested elsewhere) but once or twice an hour I have to bump the WiFi to get it to work.

yup, did that on both units.
so, I made it 12 hours today on a single charge. I only used it 3 times to browse the web for about 5 min (no flash), and I wrote an email and sent it.
Sorry, but that is ridiculous.

Mine has been fine, except for the GPS.
I have a build 1.112.01_EMEA_CUS7. A new tablet and it's registered from today so they probably update them by batches because there are no new updates.
EDIT: But it works brilliantly apart from the crashes when I've installed any app. I've fixed that but it would be nice to be bug free.

You are lucky. There is a update from Acer here for your build. It will take you directly to 1.141.01.
You need to unzip it using this post and then move the extracted update.zip from the decoded.zip file to your external sdcard and then do the update key sequence (volume down and power pressed) and you're done
Thanks. I'm updating as I type this.
I just hope that it will update properly and that I won't have any problems with rooting and or bricking my device or any problems that I've already solved.
I come from Desire so I'm used to wiping my phone first so just updating is a new for me. I would also feel better if our bootloader would be unlocked.
EDIT: Updated OK. Root pending.
EDIT2: Rooted and disabled phone.apk
The phone now works perfectly and is updated.

This is an official update so it will either update or not if the checksums are wrong or it cannot binary patch a file. So no chance of a brick.
It works OK. The only thing I've noticed is the longer boot time.
The android screen takes a minute longer probably because it's building files.
I'll check logcat when I have the time and patience to mess with it some more.
I didn't know that the update would just fail. I was expecting a brick because I was reading some posts about people bricking their tablets. I guess I was wrong.
Feedback from Acer Support re Updates, Etc.
According to Acer tech support, there is no way to force the new firmware update or Honeycomb update to the Tab. You just have to be patient and wait for the Tab to update itself.
As we know, lots of people are complaining about the screen turning on/off/on/off by itself, resulting in battery drain. These complaints are well-publicized and easily found using search engines.
I first purchased a 16gb Iconia Tab. I called tech support about the flashing screen and reported it as an issue. After speaking with customer support, they emailed me a survey asking about my user experience with the Tab. I completed that survey and again noted the problem with the flashing screen and battery drain.
The new firmware update that was pushed to the device solved the flashing screen issue and improved battery life.
Then I bought a 32 gb Tab and experienced the same flashing screen/battery drain issue. I called tech support (to see if I could obtain the firmware update for the new Tab). Amazingly, tech support told me that they had never heard of this issue. I told them to search their knowledge base but they insisted this was the first time they heard about a problem with the screen.
I know that cannot be true because I called them twice about this very issue, and gave them feedback in their on-line survey.
Anyway, I expect that the screen problem will be resolved when the firmware update gets pushed to the device. Unfortunately, on my first 16gb TAB I got the firmware update the day after I opened the box. I'm still waiting for that update on the 32gb Tab after 10 days.

I had this issue. It's because of the wifi. My screen would turn on and off randomly and it was because my wifi was on my place where it had bad reception. I turned it off and the screen didn't light up anymore.
I didn't test if it also occurs on the new firmware.

constant system crashes

Hi there,
I bought my Galaxy Note one month ago and in the first weeks I never had any problems with it, but recently it crashes more and more often. A week ago, while I was still on stock rom (unrooted), it crashed 5 times at one day. I did nothing that could be a problem for it, I was sketching (Autodesk SketchbookMobile), browsing, playing games etc.
I thought it may be the best to try a custom Rom, so I rooted my Note and flashed RocketRom v20. But soon after that the same problem appeared, and besides that, I needed after every crash more than 10 trys to successfully start the phone, somestimes it stuck at the "Samsung Galaxy Note" logo, sometimes it even accomplished it to get to the PIN-input, but crashed at it.
Yesterday I flashed RocketRom v21, but nothing changed.
The only thread about crashes I found in this forum says it may be because of S-Memo, but I barely use it, and never had problems while using it.
Right now I'm holding my Note in my Hand and try to start it, it's attempt 30 or so. I really love the Galaxy Note, but this makes it hard to use for me.
I appreciate every attempt to help me.
seems like manufacturing defect. If you are able to enter download mode, then flash Stock ROM which is latest for your region. then go for a replacement.
A few minutes ago I wasn't even able to get to downloadmode or to charge the phone, but after I plugged it in and out a few times I somehow managed it to get to download mode. I flashed the stock Rom, but the phone again stucked at the "Galaxy Note"-Logo the first two attempts to start it, now, again, it shows no reaction.
It seems like I have no other choice then to send it back
Sounds like a hardware defect with the internal NAND that might be accounting for the random freeze/reboots. Bad RAM can also do this.
Bad/ Corrupted sectors can do that. Lawl.
Also, list all apps that you've installde from the market. There might be some conflicting processes that's causing the phone to hang.
And first to be sur take your sdcard out, and test sometime bad/defective sdcard can also have dramatic effect.
It's already on it's way to Amazon.
I tried starting it without the sd-card, but that didn't help.
I hope it doesn't take too long, because i can't handle the tiny screen of my Samsung Wave anymore.
You are not the only one with this problem. Mine also started crashing/turning off randomly after approx 1 month of buying. Again on stock rom unrooted and very few apps installed.
Starting to think that just maybe samsung have tried to push the boat out too far by releasing this device. Don't get me wrong I love it (when it works) but it just seems too buggy atm. And I don't think ICS will cure all these problems we are all having. I know every device has a small percentage of faulty products but it seems that the note has a high percentage of those.
Sorry to be so negative but when you spend 600 euros on a phone you expect it to work for more than a month.

Warning with french ICS update

The ICS update finally appeared in France for stock Note.
It appears the update was pulled shortly after because a lot of users bricked their Notes in the process.
Moral of the story: don't update as soon as you see an update, but wait...
Samsung really sucks at software development.

SFR update and XEF for the short time i spent there.
i'm in the same case except that i'm booted and running( for me was a FOTA update, wich installed nicely except with a "failed " message after the fist boot), but the phone cannot be mounted by any ways under windows now ( even with drivers reinstalled ).
But some seems to be blocked in bootloop
Epic fail on this one, especially just before a week-end.
I'm one of the lucky few that got it to boot - sigh come on Samsung!
Managed to upgrade to ICS with 'failed to upgrade firmware' warning.
Missing S Note application, not sure whatelse it might be missing.
You can manually install S Note app by looking up apk file.
Search 'S Note app xda' from google if anyone having similar problem.
Kies 2.0 is recognizing phone as well. I can link screenshot if anyone need for w/e reason if it may help them.
Also, battery drainage problem still there i believe.
Tried the infamous aeroplane mode method, not so sure if it helped:
1. Turn off touch sound and screen lock sound from setting->setting
2. Turn on aeroplane mode
3. Switch off phone
4. Take out battery for 10sec
5. Boot and wait till everything loads
6. Turn off aeroplane mode
App called 'Play Movies' was installed along with ICS, but it gives 404 connection error for 'movie rental' section.
Other than that, Note is running really smooth with ICS.
Firmware version shows up as PDA:LQ3 / PHONE:LPT / CSC:LP1 (XEF)
Wasted time trying to download this so-called update

When I see that, I'm happy to install safe custom roms...
It's a shame for such a company to provide such crappy roms...
Well I am one of those who got stuck on the infamous Samsung logo...
Stock Note, purchased in November, never rooted, 2 GB updates via OTA since November, CSC XEF.
Yesterday morning I got the upgrade notice, did it OTA and on rebooting stuck on Samsung screen...
As an idiot I had been waiting for the "official" ICS ROM.
Thanks Samsung, lesson learned.
Many phone manufacturers will tell you to stay away from custom roms to avoid bricking your phone but to brick your device when updating on an OFFICIAL stock rom after receiving a notification is definitely UNBELIEVABLE !!!!! What is Samsung doing to this expensive device - after the EMMC Bug episode where many people have bricked their Note, now we have another update problem!
Samsung's reputation will take a hard punch with these things if the press writes about this. I think most people who bricked their Note will be fed up and avoid Samsung's phones in the futur.....

totally agree... it would have been good for them if they silently provide fix for the emmc bug... staying on GB has become the best solution to all this crap..
I have to say that I'm glad to hear of this. At least it's not just me!!!
My French note got the update yesterday and although it's not hung up or bricked, it certainly has huge issues. Running so hot and battery discharging even when connected to PC by usb. Using wall charger is barely keeping up with the drain even when not using phone.
Have done battery pull and cache wipe twice. No change. Factory reset, nothing either.
Swype not working. Premium suite totally missing. Really disappointing.
Probably not worth waiting for them to figure it out. Downloading UK version now.
I left my note on overnight under the following condition.
Wifi off
Bluetooth off
Data off
Auto rotation off
Gps off
Silent mode on
Power saving off
Between 1am and 10am battery % changed from 81% to 79%.
Quite satisfied with standby drainage.
I just did aeroplane methid as i mentioned on page 1.
Not using any battery save apps.
However when using apps such as dolphin browser, s note, s memo, there seem to be heavy battery drainage issue.
Charged fully then used the browser for approx. 30min and it was on 90%.

SM-T500 Apps / Games flashing black when running

Hi all,
Just like to check as i am at a loss on what to do. I got my Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 10.4" SM-T500 last month. Generally it was ok except that samsung browser will hang when the tablet goes into deep sleep and it will take mins for it to 'catch up' meaning i cannot turn off the tablet or launch applications during that time. Youtube app sometimes will sometimes randomly close.
However in early dec, after a samsung software update, games and some apps started flashing black for 5 seconds and perhaps about 2 seconds of the app /game screen shown. It has not gone into sleep or anything as if the game / app appears on the screen you can still click on items and all. Restarting the tablet or factory reset did not help. Youtube app will still randomly close.
Already sent in to samsung service centre and they tell me they have reflashed the latest firmware.. however above problems remain. I asked customer support and they told me that at this point to wait for a new samsung update or app update which may solve the following issue. but thats going to take a while before an update comes from their tablet
Wonder is there anything i can do ?
Thank you.

This is happening to me since the latest update as well.
I wouldn't stress about too much. Updates have been coming pretty regular so just wait for an update. They've updated the tablet about 3 times since I bought it so I feel they'll have this fixed soon.
Nothing I've done fixed it so I'm just waiting for an update.

Do you have auto rotate on? It seems turning it off stopped the black screen for me. Give it a try until it's fixed with an update.

Yes, I thought that solved it but you're right, turning off auto rotate didn't actually help.
I haven't gotten any new updates since version T500XXU2ATK3.
What version are you on?
I'm pretty confident a factory reset won't solve this problem. I'm happy I'm not the only one experiencing this. Hopefully an update will fix it soon.
My version is now T500XXS2ATL1, security patch level is 1 December 2020
You are right, the factory reset didnt do anything at all. It made it worst!! even at the home screen it will just keep flashing. I gave up and went back to the service centre and told them to do something as i could not work on it. They changed the motherboard and it seems ok for now. Stil testing it but problem seems to have gone away.
Suggest if yours is under warranty to do the same too!

Any update on your experience?
Just wanted to update that I solved this problem for myself by downgrading to firmware version T500XXU2ATJ6 which had a November 2020 build/release date (with Sept 2020 security patch unfortunately). I'm happy now though. Confirmed fully working after using for over a week.
Hmm after the hardware change, the tablet works as it should. I am still on the T500XXS2ATL1 firmware.
Interesting. Someone else on the Samsung forums had a similar issue and firmware downgrade solved his issue.
When a firmware newer than ATL1 comes out I'll try it.
Also, doubt this tablet will get Android 11 before May/June.
hmm wondering if there is anything different in our tablets (mobo chips /memory / etc) which made it behave so drastically with this firmeware update. And with a hardware change it seems to work better? hmmm wondering wondering.
I still have one small issue where every now and then unlocking the screen you may not be able to access any icons, i will need to lock the screen again and drag on camera/browser before i am able to use the tablet. This happened out of the box as well but didnt think much of it then.

That's exactly what I'm wondering. Some minor component difference on the mobo having compatibility issues with the different firmwares.
Kinda sounds like a touchscreen issue you're having. Hopefully it won't get unbearably bad for you.
