Rooted vs Stock (My Impression) - Fascinate General

Awhile ago I rooted my phone and played with a few ROMs. I was using Superclean 2.0 (I think), and PWGB to name a couple. Recently I went and tried SuperClean3 v.5 and it didn't go so well. Not to fault SC3, it was lovely until I tried to reinstall my apps from Titanium Backup. Anyway because of the difficulties I went back to stock, and OTA updated to Verizon's 2.3.5.
Now I am wondering why I Rooted in the first place. I swear my battery lasts longer and I have learned to ignore the bloatware. I originally rooted to get rid of the bloatware because I thought it was slowing down my phone. Maybe it's because I am using Verizon's Gingerbread vs. Verizon's Eclair, but it seems to be a lot better. There are some shiny new phones out there and I will up on my contract soon, but I don't see anything that makes me want to get rid of my Fascinate. The Razr is cool, Galaxy SII is cool, and the new Nexus is Cool, but I think I'll keep my Fascinate.

Don't give up until you've tried some of the other ROMs, kernels and themes here... Performance is only one potential benefit to rooting. Better customization and functionality are the best benefits imo. For starters, why not try Superclean 3 V0.5 with the TW4 addons nitsuj17 posted in the development section, along with comradesven's KGB kernel (of course, if Soviet paratroopers invade a certain Colorado High School as a result, nitsuj17 said you could blame him).
Nitsuj17 also will eventually post a new version of TSM Resurrection in which you can really customize your phone and find functionality you never knew was there. I personally use TSM Pool Party, an excellent AOSP ROM by the same team that makes Resurrection for TouchWiz. It's just one of many different ROMs you can try to unlock your phone's potential. There is also PWGB, which I see you're familiar with, and GeeWiz which I understand brings a more stock experience. Cyanogenmod 7.1 is probably the most popular Android ROM of them all, and MIUI offers a very unique user experience, and all of these can be found here. As for my initial suggestion, the KGB kernel I mentioned might pick up your phone's performance if you go back to Superclean 3.

There's version 4!? I only see v3..
Edit: Lol, nevermind I didnt realize it could be in ROM manager, I was checking at Rootzwiki. Cant confirm though cause ROM manager is detecting my fascinate as a epic4g or a i9000 on SC 0.5 when confirming to flash CWR and don't want to chance borking anything. How is though droidstyle? Is it beta or still alpha stage?
BTW didnt mean to hijack the thread.. sorry

when you restored your apps did you also restore data? If so, that would likely be the source of the "difficulties". Just a hunch since you weren't real specific about difficulties. If you were coming from froyo or eclair to GB restoring data with apps would most certainly make life hell.

Well Jt is not really advertising the latest release, but if you look thru the last 2 pages or so in the alphalulz thread on rootz, you will see his "stealthmode" post of a new release and patch with pull down menu widgets. Camcorder, mms send still are broke, but alot of tweaks have been done. I can now run a live wallpaper and the launcher is smoother than v3 was with a regular wallpaper. Launcher settings aew enabled, home screen rotates, galaxy s settings work for controlling bln, usb mass storage woeks and a few other things im missing. But its a daily driver for sure....very smooth now. Quadrant around 2200 compared to 1800 before for me. So the hardware acceleration must be tweaked in some aswell.

phone is too damn slow

I'm tired of my phone being too slow, responding too slow to touch, lagging..
I have the android 2.1 OS on my HTC Hero CDMA and I was wondering if there were any general recommendations to speed up my phone.
I would be willing to put on a hacked OS, root it, or do whatever it takes as long as the phone is still fully functional. I'm pretty new with this stuff so bear with me.
Thanks,

I rooted, installed CM6, my phone was totally transformed.
Cm 6 - rc1 is a good start simply amazing going from stock. I get 0 lag. I must warn you always do a nandroid back up before changing ROMs. Its basically a clone of your phone's software and settings allowing you to recover from a bad issue.

+1 to all previous posts.
The Hero running out of the box stock with Sense is really pretty slow. I liked Sense, but I like a faster device better.
Follow the well documented instructions found on this site for rooting the Hero and then play around with different ROMs until you find one that fits you.
Personally I've been running Darchdroid and don't plan on ever switching again.
I don't even know what lag is any more.
Thank you for your responses.
Is there a link for a tutorial or forum topic about where to download CM6 and how to install it?
Thanks.

Yes, check the cm6 thread.
Thanks guys.
I got CM6 on there now, and it is much faster.
I've seen some posts about putting different kernal's on there..What do you guys think about that? Is there any cool features that I can do now with CM6? Tethering?
Thanks.

The problem with installing something like CM is that those ROMs are missing a lot of the stuff that you are used to using. And you might spend a long time downloading, and looking for the apps you need. I found CM to be not much faster and a pain in the ass in some ways (the dialer is weak, same with the keyboard, etc.)
I know people are going to start pointing to all the apps you can download to replace what is there, but it's a pain, and time consuming.
If anything I would try one of Fresh's ROMs, which have Sense and most of the HTC apps. And his Toast versions allow for overclocking as well.
On another note, your Hero should not be slow. Have you tried a factory reset?? I have used slow Heros before, but when they are working properly there should be almost no lag with the stock 2.1 OS.
The kernel is under the thread cdma android development and as far as cm6 u can overclock as well with a different kernel and as for aosp vs sense its just user preference tryem both c which one u like best and stick with what works for u that's what there here for both are outstanding

That's the beautiful thing about CM6 though is the customization. I know its personal choice, but I actually love the CM6 Phone Dialer (one of the guys over on the theme board customized the background for in call to be a nice cyan color other than green) and like the AOSP keyboard moreso than the Sense Keyboard. You can however, install a variety of HTC_IME keyboards and get that same Sense functionality on CM6.
I only do a new nightly every few days and it might take me... 10 minutes or so to get my phone setup. That includes a Full Wipe, ROM Flash, Kernel Flash, Circle Battery Flash and now a Phone Dialer Flash. I connect to my wifi and the Market downloads all of my apps for me and I restore my settings with ADW Backups. Logging into an app every now and then doesn't bother me after I've flashed a new ROM.
This is an "to each his own" situation and I did use FreshROM for quite some time before making the switch. To me, I don't plan on looking back. I may be switching to the T-Mobile G2 when it's released and as soon as CM is made available for it I'll be rooted and running it in no time.

How do you get the market to automatically download your apps? Is it another app or backup? It won't even save all of the apps I had downloaded last time. It only seems to save around 8.

Eugene OR TeamWhiskey 2.2

So it looks like they both have working 2.2 builds out in the wild now. My question is which one is better, or which one are YOU going to use? Let's try and keep the comparison here, that way we don't clog up both of these wonderful dev's threads.
I have never used either since I'm still stock. What was the general consensus before their new 2.2 builds?
I wouldn't know. They both have a huge following though. What I have noticed is that each one has very loyal followers. It almost seems as if its "either one or the other". But since it is now 2.2, it is a completely different ball game.

Fair question, but somewhat irrelevant in my opinion. My experience with stock vs cooked ROMs (MT3G CM6) is that the only real advantage is better speed. Sure, a few different user-experience changes, but that's all. An the stock ROMs are far more stable.
My stock Vibrant is already plenty fast. I'm rooted and can use root-only apps. My Dolphin browser already displays Flash. JIT will make it technically faster, but will I actually notice..? What would Eugene or TeamWhiskey add to that...?
Have not tried either but am running fusion by team wiskey with there kernel. Phone runs to good to worry about 2.2.

This statement is very inaccurate. When was the last time you installed a bionix rom?
I'm running the 2.2 and it is flawless. 2.2 offers a lot of improvements over 2.1 besides flash. If you don't know what those are then you really shouldn't be giving uninformed information.

Which one looks like stock? Both? I really despise the all black theme I see on the 2.1 Bionix roms. It just looks tacky in some places like the notifications pull down and it's too black. I see Macnut looks kind of like stock.. no screenshots included with either tho. Either way I've downloaded Macnut and I will be installing it ASAP. I'll try the other 2.2 rom next..

2.2 is A VERY BIG update. I dont know about Vibrant, but it should improve battery, it should run faster due to JIT, it has MANY extra features, and its compatible with 2.2 apps (new Gmail, Chrome-to-phone, youtube, flash...etc). move to 2.3 is not that big
that said, i trust TW more then Eugene.
Personally I think it's too soon to be worried about which one is better for general use. I'd give it a little time for each to get some additional polish unless you just enjoy flashing roms all the time every time a new one comes out. Chances are there'll be bug-fixes and tweaks to both in the next few days. Wait for that and more feedback from the early adopters and then decide...
When I got my phone used it had Eugenes rom on it, but I felt Bionix and team Whiskeys roms have been the best roms besides CM.
Put it this way I have only donated to 2 developers, #1 CM and #2 Team Whiskey.

It isn't flawless. Calendar doesn't sync. Holding back results in a FC (new screenshot feature not implemented properly). I've had inconsistency in the market. Don't get me wrong, I'm using it and I like it, but don't throw the word 'flawless' around so easily.
If you remove screencapture.apk that fixes the back button long press fc and you need to install calendar(something).apk to fix sync issues..
It all comes down to personal preference. My experience with Eugene's 2.1 ROMs are that they're TOO skinned. I personally prefer Team Whiskey.
To answer your question about which looks more stock, Team Whiskey hasn't really skinned the Obsidian ROM all that much, so it basically looks like Stock TouchWiz.

there is a fix already for both
I was using Macnut R7 and was about to flash R9 but Team Whiskeys downloaded faster. The major difference between R9 and 7 is, wi fi calling, modem and working gps with some minor tweeks.
If that is true then my comparison won't be too far off.
The biggest difference between the too is that Team W is a near perfect leak of the official 2.2 rom and Eugene's has some mods like built lag fix and a modified version of T.W. which for the most part is better than stock (not perfect but better; in my opinion)
That should really be what makes you choose which one you want.
Secondary things to think about is that, whiskey roms are known for getting official ota's which is nice if you want to get the official with little work, but its still kinda glitchy and slower than Eugenes, but not in a bad way. If you are running stock without a lag fix then you won't notice much. Eugene's rom is highly modded and some stock things won't work like if you still have avatar on your sdcard, and since his is a port there are some remnants of I9000 and cappy things floating around that can throw you off. But it is less glitchy atm and too me looks better. It has a lightly themed Modified TW. But you can get and install that yourself if you want there is a link in the macnut thread.
Hope that helps. I'm Running tw's rom now but I'm going to check out R9.

Leaked 2.3 ROM FOR i9000 GALAXY S

http://www.samfirmware.com/apps/blog/entries/show/6282349-android-2-3-2-leaks-for-galaxy-s-
This is a just leaked rom for the galaxy s. hopefully the devs can use it for the vibrant.
well even if not at least we know now that Samsung wasn't lying about March for the euro/Asian markets.
Nice, hopefully we will be able to use this to our advantage?
Also, couldn't we flash this since we now have the kernel that allow us to flash i900 ROMS? If we could just flash those files, then flash the kernel through Odin somehow it might work. Idk though, I'm no dev.

damb, this is so great, im thinking maybe tonight we might have a port for the vibrant, and i wonder if eugene and krylon know about this considering, it just today got leaked, a few hours ago.............. anyways, everyone post on this, lets get the hype going, we want this baby ported ASAP.. always thanks so much eugene and krylon, my brothers of galaxy android
So far from what i've read over there...
Looks like quadrant scores are not improved over 2.2 which is what i'm sure most people are hoping for. It also appears that the screen off animation is not present in the rom. It's also using Touchwiz 3.0 and not 4. Market is broken, and gingerbread keyboard also not included. Looks like an early beta build from what i've read.
**edit**
market is working, they have root access, and they are in the process of deodexing.

The kernel that allows us to flash i9000 ROMs is only 2.2 and 2.2.1 compatible. I'm pretty sure someone would have to build a new kernel to let us flash that or port the ROM over.
The crowds are getting restless over there. They're in an uproar about "this is missing" and "that is missing". One of the complaints is about the gingerbread wallpaper being missing. But these guys forget that our 2.1 devices didn't come with stock 2.1 walls. They instead came with whatever wallpapers samsung gave us. Overall it's starting to sound more complete than the first froyo leaks that we used to have which is reassuring. Some of the guys say that the leak is stable and everything is working on their devices. One of the nice improvements they're reporting is functioning hardware acceleration.

Funny to see their behavior over it when we are just sinking our teeth into 2.2.1. Maybe its a good thing though.. I myself am so pleased with the performance boost of 2.2.1 that I'm in no rush to flash again but of course I'm in the minority on that.

Na I'm with you on that, running Bionix 1.3 and it really is just as fast as CM7 was for. Really the only thing that gingerbread had over this ROM is that the applications list loaded faster. Plus on this I have themes

im still skeptical about moving on to ICS for the vibrant just bc i need a phone that works 100% correctly all the time... so im still on froyo.
currently running bionix fishman mod final2 w/ bali-x @ 1.2ghz

is anyone else flashing any additional necessary files when they flash their roms??

Fishman is good. My needs are different. I need a Rom that is atleast 2.2.1. So the capacitive buttons dont blind me on each screen press. I'd recommend ultimate rom or biwinning with the sense or sgs2 theme. I also use Bali undervolt kernel. If you haven't already test out the modems for your area. For instance for me its KB1.

i agree... im still on the fence of flashing an ICS rom but i think ill wait another couple of weeks bc im in no hurry to move on from a 100% functional rom
personally i think the miui camera is essential and am not sure why more people dont flash it over their roms. i use that & the stock hd recorder for a better camera experience
i also went back to a 2.2 rom...TARD...can yall post the links to the extras...i would love to try that s.gps fix...think what it was...

couldn't find the thread but... here it is

just flash through cwm. (be my first thanks if you would please )
CM9's 16B is so functional that I put it on my Dad's phone, and he says it's running much better than it did before on Bionix. The only issue he and I have been having is the GPS, which never has worked from the beginning for us anyways, and very minor things (like the menu for toggle widgets is called lockscreens or something).
ICS is pretty awesome. You may want to give it a shot... I recommend the Icy Glitch kernel to go with CM9.
Is the official GB available for this yet?

No, I'll be amazed if it ever is since the vibrant is close to 2 years old.

when you say never worked, do you mean it as GPS ideally should? or even to the low standards of how the vibrant's GPS is supposed to work?
personally since everything works 100% as best as it possibly can right now on my vibrant with bionix fishman mod without a hardware gps fix, i'm very reluctant to move onto ICS if the GPS wont even lock within around 30 secs or so like i can get it to do with froyo especially if it is something i need eventually
minor things like menu names i can definitely deal with, but if froyo's GPS works better overall compared to an ICS rom, i see absolutely no reason to make the switch with this phone. if i need ICS that badly, i will get a new phone

agreed on that point... i would money down that an official GB release will never happen for the vibrant.

[Q] Latest, hottest ROM

I was on Legendary and then SimpleROM but I'm ready for a change as long as it is stable (like the ones I just mentioned). I tried reading the threads but they keep changing and some are very long.
Just wondering if someone knows since I have been on only this 2 ROMs for nearly a year.

Try out CM9.
It's pretty popping fresh.
Also, MIUI.
And in the future, we discourage best ROM threads.
Depends on how you use your phone. CM9 beta 0 is stable for a daily ROM. But If your a power user like on your phone nonstop then you will find yourself wanting a charger.
Also gotta ask the question to you want to move to the MTD side.... best bet is to read up on everything, then test out different roms till you find one that you like.
Sent from a CM9 powered Epic.
If you want a good stable Rom the marcusant rom version3 and the shake and bake theme are a nice combo. Also cm9 is also kinda nice but its still in beta
Threads are long because everyone is trying to butt hurt everyone else, and there are a lot of useless postings (such as this one). Just be sure whatever rom you use has the appropriate thanks, documentation and GPL reference or you will get blasted even as just a user.
Just try them all, go nuts, have fun! Just be sure to do whatever you can to brick your device so you can provide yourself with the logical reasoning to upgrade as quickly as possible.
Sent from my, is it safe to claim, personally semi-tweaked (but not shared) and still therefore kanged??? sammiEpic running some CM9b0 shiznizzle.....
Thanks to all that offered good advise and options.
And to clarify a few points:
1 - I did not ask what was the best ROM (I know better than that).
2 - I respect the advise of the users here and do not wish to try them all. It simply takes too much time when all the ROMs say to wipe everything clean including data. It's a very long process putting everything back the way it was. The last 2 updates I did did not update my programs so I had to install them all manually plus their data. And as some of you may know, restoring from backup is not always a good thing to do.
So... I really appreciate those that provided a few options for me to try. Will do soon. And btw I alway provide feedback to the thread on the ROMs that I try. Comes from being a technology administrator for many years.
Thanks again,
tsp

CM9! Seriously it's ****ing ICS and you will be surprised by how stable it is. There are bugs but as a daily driver I personally haven't run into any.

In order for someone to answer this you have to let people know how you use your phone. Are you hooled on the Touchwiz interface? Then it would require some work and getting similiar apps for CM7, CM9 or any other AOSP ROM. If you just want to update to the newer firmware and like how your phone is running now, then Sleeper or CleanGB. If you need more app space then you want to go to an MTD ROM like CleanGB MTD. At least read the OP's of any ROM you are considering to know all the features.

im running marcusants nexus s port and its really stable and everything besides voice search works
CM9 ICS
I've been using CM9 ICS since alpha 2 and I had to Odin my phone back to stock for some weird reason. It was so strange seeing the stock interface after using ICS. "I can't swipe notifications away? What is this vertical scrolling? Bloatware???" So yeah, beta 0 seems good enough for me for now, plus the battery life is way better than stock.
CM9 for sure. The only real issue was the phantom voicemail but there is a fix for it now (as of today).
Loving the CM9. It's like a new phone!

Tried CM9 and it was allot more stable than I expected. However it still needs work and is not as solid as stock. The lag overall started to annoy me along with other things like garbled text messaging, 4G issues, occasional reboots, and no visual voicemail, but the devs are doing a great job.
I am on Clean GB right now and will jump back to Thunderhawk when Random updates to El30.
Dont flame my opinion, please.

Hmm, No. I tried the RC0, but not the Beta. I think I am picky and just need everything to work as good as stock or better.
