(Q) questions from new user of WP7 - HD2 Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting an

Hi there
I was using Android on my HD2 since first day. But now i tried WP7 and i love it but i have few questions i need to know or i will get abck to Droid.
Im Using HD2O WP7 ROM
1) Any way to login to facebook chat and have that mobile icon instead of online green circle ? (like using Facebook messenger on Android or iOS ?) and stay online even when the screen off and in other apps and get messages like SMS ?
2) Are there any apps for Last.Fm scrobbling in the background (even with the screen off, instatnt scobbling) ?
3) Why the WP7 is not compatible with emulators (like GBA, PSX or 64) in Android wverything works nearly lag- free , so why not in WP7 ?
4) Sometimes, when somebody call me, phone lost the carrier signal and then i recieve SMS that i missed the call when my phone was off or without signal - even when the phone is Constantly on !
5) Any tips to get longer battery life on HD2 ?
Thanks

Switch to Android or stick with WinMo? Reasons for and against...

Now most of us including myself have had the opportunity to try out the Android rom on our HD2, I was wondering if anyone was going to jump ship to Android or stick with WinMo on the HD2. I know there are already a couple of polls/threads on this subject matter but I thought it was about time somone listed the pros and cons for each OS and HD2.
Below I have listed what I believe to be the positives and negatives are (from my experience):
Android - Good Points
Fantastic app store selection
Refreshing UI from WinMo
Dedicated constant Google Android only apps
720p HD video recording (possible)
Compass Street View in Google Maps
ROM upgradeable OTA
Customisable
Good notifaction bar
Facebook/Twitter/Flicker Contacts intergration
My Location always works
Auto update notifications for installed apps
Better Youtube app with ability to view/leave comments
Live widgets
Live Wallpaper
Flash support in web browser
HTML and images displayed in email straight away with no "Download images" as per WinMO
Android - Bad Points
No Secure Box/Private SMS storage
Only 7 homescreens (possible 9 with 3rd party launchers)
Multiple email accounts not easily accessable from one screen
Poorer weather animations/transitions
No dedicated app exit button
No Face down Speaker Phone activation
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Windows Mobile - Good Points
13-18 homescreens
Weather Wallpaper
Excellent Secure SMS box
Customisable Home Screen/Tody view (Cookie's Home tab)
Access to several email accounts from Mail tab
Smoother weather animations
Animated photo and music landscape transitions/coverflo views
Document tab
Excellent developer community
Various roms - 6.5, 6.5.3, 6.5.5
Better office support
Windows Mobile - Bad Points
My Location rarely works
Inconsistant looking icons for apps
Old UI hidden under Sense
Can crash and freeze
Phone slows down when Twitter tab updates
Frustrating HTC keyboard
No flash support in browser
Internet Data Connection prone to freezing and stalling
Any other good or bad points? Will you switch?
a number one reason for sticking with hd2 for many people including myself has been its hardware, its 4.3 inches amazing screen. however, having just seen this http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/09/htcs-4-3-inch-desire-hd-shows-up-on-video/ - upcoming HTC Desire HD with Android 2.2, i think that would no longer be the case. HTC Desire HD is arguably the successor of HTC Desire. I wonder what HTC has up its sleeves as a successor of HD2
Sorry to say this, but a lot of the WinMo reasons are invalid since a lot of the reasons are down to HTC i.e. Weather Animations, Secure Inbox, Home screens, etc. These run on top of WinMo. WinMo by itself is a legacy operating system that HTC have dressed up really good.
the only reason, it gets normal updates, it is open source and it developes every day to be good OS(and it has full potential to be best OS) but in case of winmo only minor changes from build to build like changing **** , did you ever think what is changed from build for example 23531 till 23569 com 5 or even compared to wm 6.5 219** builds ? almost nothing... but u see many changes from android 1.6 till the latest 2.2
P.S just want to mention that i'm not kind of guy who hate win mo just i need something new, something that has some new words to say...

Maybe I did not make it clearer but I meant to stick to WinMo on the HD2. Afterall this is a HD2 forum and we users own one. Therefore, HD2, WinMo and Sense are seen as all in one in this thread.
I really enjoyed the Android OS, but it didn't have push HoTMaiL and it didn't truely sync all of my exchange server data (calendar and contacts) without a 3rd party paid app.
For those two reasons alone, I have to side with HTC and WinMo.

Another great reason that Windows Mobile >>> Android is the fact that you can use bluetooth keyboards to type office documents!
There is no way to do this on Android currently...
Added point no hidden virus in wm apps. I am on the fence right now to be honest, I dont like the closed nature of WP7 but dont want OS designer to be able to remotely remove apps from my phone either, as well as I really dont want to have to worry about what the app is doing in the background like the last "music app" that would send sms to a premier site either

Great point there zelendel nice catch!
Even when I had an iPhone before I really appreciated how Apple tested the apps before they allowed them on the market to make sure they weren't malicious...
only thing I liked about android was the web browser with full? flash support.
Otherwise, i didn't see it being any faster than my hd2 on nrgz ROM, and it looks too much like the IOS for me.
I'm waiting to see what second generation wp7 looks like before I decide on my next device. I have a while before upgrading anyways.

what about the international calling "virus" on the 3d terrorist game?
Lookout mobile security is free though for those who want to protect their phone.
good article..its only been a couple of months for myself and im still getting use to winmo. i love the hardware specs which was the main reason i brought the hd2. im still using stock rom which im very happy with .i do get the occasional freezes plus battery life is really frustrating..i havent tried out any of the chef roms as of yet i have seen them on youtube are they more stable? but android seems exciting im gonna stick for the time being until i get bored of winmo and let android develop and a stable port comes along ..last thing how do you get up to 13-18 homescreens.
Exchange
Exchange still not FULLY supported in Android - Tasks anyone?
(at least this was the case a few weeks ago)
Added new positive for Android - the ability to see images in emails on first download of email without the need to download images seperately as in WinMo. That has been a BIG frustration for many WinMo users.

Any other tab I missed?
The latter tabs are either on custom roms or cab installed.
The only 2 things i prefter with Androide is the app store and Flash, but i will absolutly stick with WinMo because it can be customized to your taste and use better then with Androide.
And the best Androide apps you have to paie for, so im staying on WinMo!
I have spent a good deal of time
I have spent a good deal of time in the Android HD2 development section and have installed various builds and played in the speed race. Besides the obvious questions about how to install and make it work, almost all of the questions are people wanting to figure out how to get it to do what and how they used to do it in WinMo. They are "how to get Android to be WinMo" questions. I think that speaks a lot for itself.
Lots of apps, but many very flaky.
WinMo needs a Titanium Backup! Very easy to recover from version changes.
Not very good TV apps for the US.
Android voice recognition is much better for search etc, but the new Bing Nav is just as good.
I will probably use both as it boots in less than a minute. The best of both worlds.

Thing is, we're lucky over here on O2 with unlimited downloads, but many countries charge extautionate rates for data use, so which makes more sense? Download all those images straight away and run up your data bill or give you the email so you can then decide to download the attachments or not?
If i will install Android on my HTC HD2, will i be able to use Android supported software like Skype, Nimbuzz etc. Also what about games for Android on my HTC HD2?

yes, while booted into android, you can use all android apps. You have marketplace and everything. These boots are not rooted though, but there are instructions for that here as well.

first full day with android and DHD

well nearly the end of the first full day with a new phone and a new OS having come from a TP2 and win mob so here goes
phones is the best i have ever had fast, fluid feels good to hold and to use
android while still learning i have seen enough to see its way better than win mo
so for you seasoned android users heres my niggles and im sure they will be easliy sorted
hate not been able to close an app down i feel likeit may still be running all the time
hate that i now have all my facebook friends phone numbers in my contacts and birthdays in my calender
would like a quick toggle app to turn on and off things like wifi/ BT/GPS
still not sure if my phone connection is correct yet to see a 3G logo
thats all after about 4 hrs of playing around so its dam good
thanks for any help
there are toggle widgets for the desktp to enable and disable wifi, mob data, gps ect....
you can go to accounts and disable facebook calender syncing
google have an indepth document about how android handles multitasking i believe it will answer you questions but for the most part 'most' applications when closed get their states saved but the program shuts down but 'processes' continue to run. similar to windows
some apps however will continue to run untill they are idle for a set period of time or ram is filled such as the internet.
i cant be more specific on where to find things as i currently dont have any phone let alone android cause i sold it to buy the DHD

1) If you are not using an app then it isn't running. While it may still be in memory it shouldn't be using any CPU cycles which would be what slows the phone down
2) Not used that feature, I imagine you can turn it off.
3) SwitchPro on the market is exactly this
4) that'll depend on location, you may only see H which is better.
Glad you are enjoying Android. Everyone always does.

[Q] Comparing WinMO< -> NAND (And switching)

hI,
First of al sorry if quetions have been asked before, I coud not find all answers, and sometimes contradictions.
I am new to NAND. Familiar with Android and WinMo.
I really love my HD2.
Therefor I am wondering about a few things:
- Is it poible to revert to WinMo (eg for guarantee/repair), I read several times it is not posible.
- Battery consumption in Android NAND: Better or worse compared to WinMo?
- Speed on NAND: Better or worse compared to Android on SD?
- Boot time: Comparable to SD or faster (Like factory Desire?)
- Are all Desire sense functions working?
eg1: Desire HD has possibility to ring phone when set to quit via PC, i this posible with Desire HD build on HD2?
eg2: Silence ring by turning phone
- Is there sync software (like with Sony Ericson Xperia 10i) like activesync/mobile center?
Finaly:
Which is the best Desire HD including sense buid around? (Most stable, Longest battery life)
- Yes it is possible to revert back, just people rush into things and don't read so they aren't knowledgeable of their device
- Iunno, considering i have not used winmo since android came out. Well for standby in andoird, 6 hours took off 3% for me
- I'd say it depends on your build. If you're using a sense build, then I feel NAND is faster than SD builds, atleast for desire HD builds. In non sense, it's the same speed
- I wouldn't know if boot time is comparable to an android device as I have never touched one before. To sd, I wouldn't say there's a notable difference
- Yes (except 720p recording, which we all know doesn't work with android on our phones as of yet)
- HTC sync, however I don't know how efficient it is as I've never used it.
There is no best of anything.
- Is it poible to revert to WinMo (eg for guarantee/repair), I read several times it is not posible.
It is possible. I haven't done it but every where I go it says possible. However like flashing winmo rom there is always a certain level of risk.
- Battery consumption in Android NAND: Better or worse compared to WinMo?
Worse. It's close but def worse than winmo.
- Speed on NAND: Better or worse compared to Android on SD?
Didn't try SD android that much, but nand android is FAST.
- Boot time: Comparable to SD or faster (Like factory Desire?)
Don't know. But I used nexus froyo build, sometimes it boots in <20s.
- Are all Desire sense functions working?
eg1: Desire HD has possibility to ring phone when set to quit via PC, i this posible with Desire HD build on HD2?
eg2: Silence ring by turning phone
Don't use sense build.
- Is there sync software (like with Sony Ericson Xperia 10i) like activesync/mobile center?
No need, just copy/paste.
Thanks all for your replies.
I am running Android from BAND now for a couple of days, and I must say that a lot of worries were not needed.
Doing a lot by GGD, I. Missed task sync with Outlook/exchange. I got around that.
Now for the answers in my opinion:
Speed, compared to SD: Faster if one leaves phone to settle for a few minutes after boot. faster than WinMo.
Battery life: With use of advanced taller I believe better, at least comparable to WinMo.
Market offers lots of replacements for my WinMo software, most of the time even surpassing in functionality and mostly for free or very little.
I already flashed back to WinMo, because. I forgot to deactivate CoPilot. Now using my WinMo licence on Android.
Boot is faster, comparable to stock phone, but needs to settle for a few minutes for max performance.
When I chose HD2, I chose it for WinMo, loving the possibility to experiment with Android. Now I am glad I can run Android from NAND.
My wife just got SonyEricson Xperia X10i. Sexy phone (in white). Very happy with Android.
Only disadvantages found on both phones is the missing integration for Exchange. There array a lot of (quite expensive) third party apps, but Google dropped a vital issue by not implementing exchange integration, especially notes and tasks to the Android calendar.
The third party software makes push mail and sending possible, but still separate from Android calendar and contacts. Fix that Google, and Android is A++, now just A.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
Go to setting then account and sync, choose add new account then you'll are the possibility of adding exchange account.
I'm running nexus froyo.

Does Froyo sync tasks and notes too?
Currently I am running desire HD which is Android 2.2
Looking at the problem I encountered, the sync still is not possible.
Using Moxier or touchdown, contacts end up in different db than Android db. Setting up two applications sending the same data is imo principally wrong. (nitpickin) Also for battery life having two sync costs more mA......

Not sure to understand how you want to sync.
If exchange via Internet... I can't help.
If ou talk about software to sync with your laptop I just found a link (and again advertisement for my post )

If you use a sense build, HTC Sense is great (much better than the WM one).
Both solutions are free.

A little something custom needed.

I am using my Droid X as a sms server where it sends approx 60/sms per minute while hocked up to my pc running a custom sms application. I'm running into a few problems...
1) I only need a bare bones OS. I really dont run any apps at all on the phone other than using it to send sms. Is there a barebones OS already available, or where could I go about having one custom built?
2) When sending SMS from the PC through the phone, the phone saves all of the sms in the system which after a few minutes bogs down the sending speeds. Ive paid to have a custom SMS auto delete app which deletes the entire sms box every 5 minutes however often this clogs up the system and app hangs. So is there a way to NOT save all outgoing sms on the phone?
3) Finally is there a way with androids to auto-restart a crashed/frozen/task-killed application?
Thanks in advance....
bare bones os? lol, wrong phone for that buddy. pick up a nexus its as bare bones android as you can get. WHat you are talking about is commonly refered to as "vannila" android. WHat you can do is root your phone if you havnt already, and remove bloat ware or try and install a custom rom.
And as fas barebones os for your pc I think linux is prefered choice.
maybe others will chime in.....(cue in ghost town sound effects )

Slow Dialer, Contacts and phonebook takes more tha 10 secs to load!!!! HELP

Just got my S$ upgraded to the lates version in my country which is 4.2.2 when I click on the dialer icon the screen freezes for 10 secs and it shows the numbers but when you press the numbers notheing happens and I guess when the program completely loads suddenly all the numbers pop up and aside from that whenever I type in a name in the messages or the contacts menu to look up someone to message or call it takes to long to load that my screen turns black and which I need to go back until I get the proper contact to be able to do some action with.... I know how to lenghten the time before it goes into energy saving mode or for screen to turn back but this is the exact problem I was staying away from since opting to get the Iphone 5... Since this has the best hardware as of the moment but to lag and freeze and sometimes even crash the phonebook or message app is ridiculous..... Sure you can do a lot of cool stuff but if it can't do this and the answer to my solution is to wait for an update just for a simple task of calling or messaging someone Samsung really brought out a half baked product. Hope you guys can help me with this because everytime I want to call or text someone I just do it on facebook a nokia 5110 would do better than this as far as calling and messaging.... Have they focused to much on the advanced features that they didn't fix the most basic elements of the phone. I had the HTC sensation, iphone 3 before that then this.. Since I'm into computers and pro open source I opted to stict with the android... but this is really pushing me to switch to Apple (who I hate but is really efficient at doing things its supposed to) or windows 8.
Help me with this problem so I don't give up on androids for my next phone I'd rather have a phone that is working lag free than the latest phone with the best specs that can't even do what it's supposed to do, basically reducing it to a bar of soap....

Hey this isn't an issue with the phone....its a problem with the update....there are a few things you can try out
1. Go to settings and go to application manager in the last tab....scroll to the 4th tab in the app manager...which is All.....and find your contact and contact storage apps.....clear their memory (note this will delete all your contacts....so backup) and retry accessing contacts as usual.
2. Usually the first step helps...if it doesn't... try to do a factory reset of your phone.....(This will delete all your app data....so backup)
3. You could also try to reflash the same firmware or a better update via odin.... Google and XDA are your friends so search the forums....there are many good tutorials.
4. Finally if you still feel like this isnt the answer...i suggest you to root your phone and install a new custom firmware....lots of good tutorials and roms on the XDA forums so check it out. If you dont know about rooting....approach with caution as this will void your warranty....
So try these out...hope it gave you some idea good luck!!
