Debating On Buying Nexus S - Help! - Nexus S General

Hey guys,
At the moment I have an Epic 4g Touch (AKA SGS II) possibly thinking about going to the Nexus S 4G. unfortunately right now the phones just not up to par for my expectations. I have poor voice and data everywhere I go (even with full bars). We are plauged with an issue called Loss Of Service where the radio just goes crazy and shuts it self off, and sometimes can only be fixed by restarting the phone. Ive missed alot of phone calls and texts because of this :\. We also are lacking in the rom development area, probably because of developers not wanting to deal with a device with such problems. Oh...and not to mention the sense of community is rather low there..trolls etc.
So as for my questions, they would be.
Hows the signal for you guys now?
Are you happy with the amount of development for the phone?
Does the 4 inch screen look small? or does it still feel large.
Tell me any pro's and con's that might not be apparent.
im already about 99% certain that ill be picking this phone up in a month or so until the E4GT straightens itself out (or gets ICS lol). Ive always wanted a phone that gets AOSP and this looks like a wonderful phone.
I appreciate any responses or feedback ^_^
Thanks,
HaiKaiDo

unfortunately no. Im north of atlanta. about 45 minutes north.
EDIT: Although the more and more I think about it....Id be willing to work something out if you were. I need all the income I can get between now and january to pay tuition for college. And the Nexus S 4G seems like a nice enough phone.

Its a great phone someone will trade you a Nexus s4g & around 200$ for your E4GT I like the phone but I'm going to keep my neXus s4g I'm either waiting on the galaxy s3 next year or if Sprint gets the galaxy Nexus I may take that even thou the s3 will kill it spec wise! You can go to the xda market & see if someone willing to trade you or buy it off you good luck!

Thanks for the feedback . Good to know!

Nexus s is the best because all of the very gooddevelopers are here.
And i think it is the most crowded development here in xda..

So my wife currently has the samsung moment still and I'm gonna upgrade her before Christmas. I'm debating on the HTC Design 4g, or the Nexus S 4g from sprint.
They are both close in size and processing power, etc. I hear there are reception issues though on the nexus S 4g? Is this true? Regardless I would put CM7 on it anyways, but just wondering.
Struggling with a decision. I love HTC and it has a slightly stronger CPU than the Nexus S, but having a google phone is cool too.
Thoughts?

If she is smart buy a Nexus S
If she isn't so smart and she is not going to flash custom ROMs buy the HTC device
I suppose you are 18 years old if I read and decode your nickname. Are you sure you want to spend that a lot money in your girlfriend / wife? If I guessed your age right, I want you to think again before making that purchase.
From my experience women want to keep things simple. Ask yourself. Does she really want a new phone? Or is it you that wants to see her having a new phone.
Both are great phones.

Buy a nexus. Whether she roots or not its still one of the best devices on sprint. Plus ics is coming real soon.

I'd say either wait a bit see what's around the corner, or get the Nexus S, or the iPhone.

Buy nexus s

After my Vibrant was ruined in the wash I have to get a new phone.....WWOVOD?

I'm wondering, What would other Vibrant owners do?
Would you get another vibrant or another phone that is CURRENTLY out.
My contract is up in a month but I'm not renewing. I might stay with tmobile but off contract. I can't wait weeks or months for the next great thing. So if this was you what phone would you get?
I'm considering another, probably used vibrant. Cheapish and I'm familiar with it and liked it a lot.
A Vibrant 4G just for faster speeds. (Speed tested one in my neighborhood and pulled 5mbps, was told it hits as high as 8 on occasion. Regular vibrant pulled 3mbps or less most of the time.)
Or a Nexus S just because it will get upgrades and already has a lot of development.
Or some other phone?
Update 3/4/11: Went with a Nexus S. Samsung makes great Hardware and google handles the software and since I was paying out of pocket I figured the NS would last me a long time.
i'd go with a sgs4g.
um... whatever insurance sent me i guess
If I was getting a replacement off of craigslist, the hd2 is about 75 cheaper most of time. if I had enough cashI'd get a cheapy then get the sgsII when it takes in europe, go to att off contract for the lower rate plan. Yeah...
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
Personally if I had insurance I would go with the one they sent me as long as it was another Vibrant or a fair upgrade. Otherwise I would go with the 4G. Seems close enough to the Vibrant that developers should be right along with lots of options for it shortly.
Honestly- just buy a cheap phone like the mytouch 3g and use it for a few (3 or 4) months until the sgs2 comes out here.

GTFO NO WAY ! ! ! but You are off topic.
Personally i would get a NS, you could get another vibrant but might as well upgrade. The NS is a good phone esp since it has better development support like you said. And with the current release schedule of Android (purely speculation) i wouldnt be surprised if we started seeing IceCream by mid summer to early fall.

used hd2 runs winmo 6.5/froyo/honeycomb sdk/win7. Can't beat that really. Might I add working gps to boot.
If you could wait a week or two, I'd get an lg optimus 2x. I know you said waiting weeks would not really be viable, but......
Or find a cheap old smartphone to hold you off till lg optimus2x. Like my old mytouch or a blackberry.
I would consider getting the Nexus S, for the update schedule alone. I'll never buy another Samsung phone (because of the software support;exception being the Nexus S). The LG optimus 2x looks good but I'm not sure if it can be rooted easily.
I love my sgs!
I would get a Motorola Defy off of craigslist and start looking at a Honeycomb or Ice-cream phone to upgrade to.
Well I looked at a few but in the end I went with a Nexus S. I love samsungs hardware but don't want to have to deal with slow updates or touchwiz (even though I like a few things about it).
And really I was super tempted to just get another Vibrant since there are some great Vibrant Devs and a lot of great rom's and mods.

If there was ever a LTE version for att of the NS, I could honestly say it would be the last phone I would ever need.
I would be happy with a HSPA+ for TMO or ATT
Hell I am hoping the LTE version will launch for Sprint too
If the GN comes I see it being the LTE flavor. Or maybe dual WIMAX and LTE?
I was thinking of the Epic Touch but seeing ICS on INT GS2 left a horrible taste in my mouth . Hopefully they will leave the stock launcher like they did for GB?

I've reached the conclusion that buying expressive electronics when they first come out is simply a bad consumer choice. How often do new electronics (especially phones) ship with some kind of defect? It takes at least a few months for all the bad batches to reach the suckers and the bug-free versions to hit shelves.

Eh, I dont know. My Launch day Nexus One is still alive and working very well. My Launch day Nexus S 4G is stable up to 2Ghz (if it doesn't get too hot anyway), and has no major issues. Hell I even get better signal on my NS4G than ANY other phone I've ever had.

Nexus S is somewhat of a special case; most if, if not all, the bugs were worked out the year prior with the galaxy s line. And if you paid attention, which i did, the gs had plenty of problems til they released the the updated versions without bugs (gs4g and ns). On top of that, the ns4g had the ns out before it--> that's about 3 generations of product field testing. You should really thank gs, ns, and gs4g for making your ns4g what it is today
Current evo4g owner eligible for an upgrade. Was on the sprint website trying to decide between this ns4g ($0.00) and the epic touch4g ($199.99). Love the gs2's hardware, but I agree with don'tshootmesanta's distaste for TouchWiz smothering the ICS goodness underneath. Love the nexus s 4g, but it is getting a little long in the tooth. Would it be wise to get the nexus now?
As a premiere customer I believe my annual upgrade will disappear in two weeks as the program comes to an end, and the opportunity to (finally) own a nexus device, for free, seems foolish to pass up.
The foolish thing would be not to get the iPhone 4s and flip it. Nexus S 4G are too cheap to use an upgrade on it.

Yerp. Lnib I've seen them hovering around 100 bones.
Follow the leader @corythug
So you're saying I ought to:
1. Use my upgrade to buy the iPhone 4S for $199.99
2. Sell iPhone on craigslist/ebay for ~ $600
3. Keep using the evo or use the $400 profit to buy new phone off contract?
I jumped on this today for my other line...anyone recomend any good roms...or is stock rooted good enough....I would like to overclock a little too...any recommendations would be helpful cause this won't be my phone so i won't be able to tinker with it...thanks

For me it's either Nexus or no Android phone but I'd get the Epic Touch 4G. You could easily sell it, buy a Nexus S 4G and have some cash to spare. You could even wait and see if the Galaxy Nexus hits Sprint and sell the Epic Touch 4G then.

Yea Peter Alfonso's Bugless Beast GPA 19, very much stock but better. You can just d/l and install it through Rom Manager although it's probably still on these forums some where, just to much other ICS stuff to wade through and find it. I've tried them all and his is by far the smoothest bug free one I've came across, great battery life as well. I'll stick with it until he gets a ICS version up and running.

yeah that is true. maybe ill just get the evo LTE and wait for a 100% full working pure ICS rom.
That's what I thought, too. ..but check the rezound and One X forums, the way HTC has been locking their sh1t down, and with all the proprietary HTC features, it's almost impossible to get a fully functional AOSP ROM working on the newer devices.
And to flash a ROM, you have to be tethered to a computer using fastboot commands.
I've been struggling with this myself the past week, and starting to lean toward the nexus, myself, despite the hardware of the Evo LTE is vastly superior. I prefer straight ICS for SW, though.
Good luck with your choice. I'd say, go browse the nexus forums and the One X forums to see the lay of the land.

Yup, in my apt there is zero coverage, out on the street I get a single bar, a few blocks away its full signal + 3G and probably HSPA+. And this is in the middle of the bay area
I am in the same boat. Almost two years with the OG Evo. Flashed the heck out of it
When it comes to a new phone I might wait for a windows phone. When I saw the reviews of the lumina 900 my eyes glittered. Moreover if that phone impressed Steve Wozniak It might be something.
just my 2 cents.
so i ruled out the nexus. simply becasue its 6 months old and the EVO hardware is better.
But now i have an issue....im thinking of switching to AT&t and getting the One X. Very sexy phone.

Is the Nexus 4 right for me?

Current Iphone 4 user. This phone is shot, home button barely works and no WIFI or GPS anymore. I am eligible for an upgrade via AT&T and plan to stick with them due to a 20% discount. I have a nexus 7 tab and I love the thing, jelly bean rules IMO. I don't want another iphone due to the "same old" feeling and paying $40 for a damn cable is stupid IMO. Should i wait out and buy this thing? Money isn't an issue due to working tons of OT from hurricane sandy. I was even wondering if I can buy this, and keep my AT&T upgrade for a phone in spring 2013. LTE 4g is heavy in my area.
My main uses for a phone
txting
pictures> Avid fisherman and quality shots really mean a lot to me as my iphone 4 still takes a damn good photo
music Storage is limited on this phone however I have the same on my iphone 4 and survive fine. Google music is plenty as is OTG cable
talking
random apps (droid suites all my needs except for a few)
Battery life isn't the end all however nice. I have 1amp chargers in home/work/truck/boat.
Thanks guys, a new phone is all i'm really looking forward to right now as Long Island is a really depressing area right now.
Should fit you well, go for it!

I might, I really need to play with it first, i'm not going to buy anything without having it in my hands for a good 10-15 mins or more.
The camera and LTE are making me nervous. My ISP provides over 50,000 access points to its customers (i'm an employee in tech support) so WIFI is covered more than LTE.
The camera better be pretty damn good, photosphere sounds cool and I have a few idea's, however the regular "snapshot" is what I need.
Considering buying this to play with during the winter, and using my upgrade for the Samsung galaxy s4 when it comes out in february, if I can do that.

Nexus 4 worth the wait (or get S2x?)

So, I would have gotten the N4, I have been waiting months now and now am kind of going to give up.
I can get a S2x for $280 Canadian all in, new and paid for..
I would love to wait for the n4 to be instock, I would get it after my big trip to asia that I will require a good mobile internet device. I also find i like to have a couple of spare batteries when I go boating for gps or hiking and other things like this where it is nice to have a backup full battery for emergency use.
I am also very hard on phones as I use them for work, i have to whip it out constantly rain or shine, and they get dropped often, so I will be upgrading from a very tough device, 9700 blackberry that has falled on cement at least 50 times or more, also been ran over by a car, dropped in water twice, and used in wet weather constantly.
I just want a fast and cheap device, either phone will cover that, but I wonder what one will be the toughest ?
Yeah I don't know why Google is encouraging the closed system phone (You can't open the battery or anything), that's what I hate about the iPhone.
The Nexus 4 is still a good phone, but if you go hiking or on trips frequently, I wouldn't suggest it as your battery may die when you need it the most.
How ever, it's not hard to carry an old phone with you (A Brickphone), to use when your Nexus 4 dies.
You can find those old crappy phones for like $15 on Craigslist
If you often drop your phone then I'd avoid the Nexus 4 if I were you!
Battery life isn't great either. And the camera sucks imho. And storage is tight. I'm starting to have some regrets about mine now if I'm perfectly honest.

Did some tests yesterday comparing against friends HTC One X, Samsung Galaxy S3 and my old Xperia arc S. My Nexus 4 camera was by far the worst of the bunch, especially indoor shots. Outside in bright conditions it's not bad. I've taken a lot of pictures with mine now and am generally unhappy with the quality. Focus seems to be a real problem (hopefully this can be rectified with a s/w fix) but detail is lacking and images look washed out in comparison with other devices.
The 2011 Xperia arc S camera blows the Nexus 4 one away. I guess I was spoilt with that device.
I waited from nov 13 to 29 for mine and love it.

Android 4.2 for some reason isnt as battery friendly as 4.1. Battery life gets better with a few cycles and some of the kernels offer great battery life ( matrix kernel).
