GFW (Great FireWall) in China is a cruel obstacle for anyone in China to surf excellent sites such as Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Vimeo etc due to political reasons. No freedom for guys in China to obtain info.
Why should people use personal VPN service?
To visit the blocked sites. To prevent people utilize the internet with freedom, many governments do network blocks.
To share the public WiFi network safely and the data will be encrypted to protect your own info.
To unblock VoIP apps such as Skype.
To bypass geological limitations such as Hulu.com asks for USA IP only.
To hide your real IP completely.
To use P2P safely.

You can use PUFF SSH app for Android if you owe SSH accounts.

Kindle Fire should be Rooted before using it.
Now let me introduce how to use VPN.
Install Bzeek on your laptop which is a FREE solution for Win XP, Vista, Win7 users sharing their WiFi network.
Run Bzeek.(A fix for BUG http://www.bzeek.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=1990)
Install ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher (Google to download it) in Kindle Fire and set Bzeek Free WiFi in the SSID in Infrastructure Mode, then switch to Ad-hoc Mode and connet it to Bzeek Free WiFi on your laptop.
Run your VPN on the laptop.
Then your Kindle Fire will be in other country, just check the IP with the Browser.
Images are post in Chinese forum:

Its a bit convoluted though isn't it?
I've been doing something similar with my iPhone hotspot/VPN which has the benefit of always being with me. My laptop mostly stays at home.
Ye, not the happiest solution at all but it works. Apparently, you can do the same using your router, Kindle and the VPN.
But -- I will definitely try this method because you don't carry a router with you 24/7. Thanks

There must be a guide on this somewhere, but I can't find it.
I want to make it so that whenever I am connected to an access point besides my home router, it will only connect to my home computer's dynamic DNS through a secure connection and route all internet traffic through my home computer (slower, I know, but secure from prying eyes, unencrypted unknown AP or not).
I'm familiar with ssh now, and the surf from work guide, but it looks like PowerPCs are more comfortable with VPNs, and I know nothing about them.
I have an HTC Wizard and my home router is DD-WRT (with VPN support), with an Ubuntu Linux box permanently connected to it. The router also updates the dynamic DNS, which I use for SSH connections from work, etc.
Any advice? Links? Guides?
This method of connecting would also make it possible to hide from you mobile provider if you are streaming or using voip applications which i know is not allowed with most.
if anyone knows how this is possible, I would alsobe very greatful.

I'm certain it's possible; I just don't know how best to do it. There are implementations of PuTTY for the pocketpc that allow you to forward ports, so you could probably configure the SSH Surf from Work method, but it seems to me that the phone is designed to do VPN, and my router has built-in VPN, so that seems like a better choice.

well, just as a thought, why don't you set up a secure proxy server at your ubuntu, and connect everywhere through this proxy.
i have not much idea about vpn and other options, so this is just an idea. probably vpn would be better, but harder to configure. if proxy does not work for you, please describe why. might be useful for me someday .

I don't know how to "set up a secure proxy server", and I don't think that would let me access my home network's files, either. Any ideas?
Is this possible? I don't feel like ordering a micro usb cable if I don't have to.
I have an iPhone and am able to SSH into it and access documents and etc...
Is it possible with the Kindle Fire? All I would do is just add books/comics. Right now I'm using dropbox, but it is slow at syncing.
Thanks guys!
I'm not sure if its possible with one of the market applications available after root right now, but you can also email yourself documents using your kindle email address (go to Manage my device in the Kindle section of Amazon). You get 5GB storage for free.
Not sure if the cost of the usb cable is stopping you but you can probably get one on eBay for 3$, shipping cost included.

you can use WebSharing app on the Market to share everything between your Android devices and PCs.
I use Wifi File Explorer. Run it, and enter the IP address it gives you into your web browser and you can exchange files between your PC and Fire with no problem. It works great, much more convenient than dragging out the USB cable.
The paid version is $.99.
Thanks guys!
Will try WiFi File Explorer. and I'll just go ahead and order a cable off amazon, they are cheap anyways and I got prime
This is definitely possible using File Expert from the Market or Appstore via Samba connection. You just attach via WiFi like any other device on your network. I have never used a cable to transfer anything between my Kindle and my machines at home because it works perfectly for me. =)
I like File Expert, it does a lot and its free. The latest version has tabs so you can have the network share open in one tab and a local directory in another. Makes copying files really easy.
There's no developer published wpa_supplicant replacement for Kindle Fire's system/bin/wpa_supplicant till now.
So I find ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher.apk is so well to switch Kindle Fire to support Ad-hoc WiFi.

I met a problem with Bzeek as well as lots of guys met that after restart the Windows, Bzeek is alway Off instead of On, even you can't turn it On.
So I check google and found that
Personal Hotspot Status
Your Personal Hotspot is Off
Some of the Bzeek settings are not yet in effect. Please restart your computer for the Bzeek settings to take effect. If the problem persists, please contact Bzeek for support.

So manually if you like, you should go to

Open Windows System Services
Get Bzeek Service and make it START

Install ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher.apk
Before running it you'd better ROOT your Kindle Fire for higher user ability.
Run ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher
You should see Switch to Infrastructure mode / Switch to Ad-hoc mode button.
Click Switch to Infrastructure mode and it turns to Switch to Ad-hoc mode then you can click Settings button to set SSID and WEP password if possible.
I put into Bzeek Free WiFi as SSID as I'm using Bzeek and WEP is not selected for Bzeek. If you use other name and with WEP, just do your way.
Now the button display Switch to Ad-hoc mode, just click it and turn it to
Ad-hoc Mode, click Enable WiFi button and it will connect to Bzeek Free WiFi rapidly
Then it will ask you put in your Bzeek username and password, finally you can share the internet with WiFi Ad-Hoc from your laptop happily!
I post this method to a Chinese forum and you can check screenshot images and download links there better.

I post another tutorial for Laptop/PC + Kindle Fire WiFi connection to abandon USB line in a Chinese forum, which will be more convenient and less damage to the USB port

You can check images there.
Build up your laptop a WiFi AP is not difficult, you can check so many tutorials.
The key for Kindle Fire is ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher.apk which makes Kindle Fire switch to Ad-Hoc Mode to access to your laptop
While you can install some virtual connection app for Kindle Fire, let it be an FTP server in your small LAN (local area network), and then you can visit the SDCard of your Kindle Fire with ftp clients such as Explorer/flashFXP/filezilla etc.
Also you can use HFS to build an http:// way as a site for your Kindle Fire to visit, download ...
is wp8 will support VPN ... ???
Yes. I use VPN on my Win8 PC and the test tablet at my work. PPTP/SSTP/ICMP all work.
Haven't tried OpenVPN but should work no issues.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
I use Shrew VPN....is free and support .pcf files
SInce I use HideIPVPN as my provider I have checked their Windows software yesaterday under W8 Release Preview.
Worked (desktop mode only) exactly as in Win 7.
Log in, choose server from you package - connect.
Netflix and Hulu worked without any problems under Chrome both in Modern UI and Desktop mode (tested only PPTP VPNprotocol but I do not see a reason for L2TP or SSTP not to work).
So, nor problems with VPN and Win 8.
This means I only need VPN on WP8 system as well + Market Enabler (as in Android) and it Christmas for me

I dont see any reason why it should not work.
I can test it over the weekend when I reconnect HDD with W8 onboard
HSS works.. but not for the metro apps.
Because HSS only works for browsers as far as I know.
This is why I use VPN - all traffic, regardless of program creating it is directed to VPN server.
This means that I can use Spotify in Poland or watch Netflix on my iPad .
I have checked with W8 and both Chrome and IE in Modern UI mode use VPN as well (they got no choice).
I have read yesterday that WP8 will not support VPN but Secure SSL to access company servers - does any one know it this protocol can be used to change IP of a device? I suppose VPN servers would have to have additional software active to support this kind of connection...
Hi Everyone,
I am seeking advice and/or feedback. Lack of 3rd party vpn (Juniper in my case) is really frustrating me. I know about TeamViewer, Remote Desktop, and the LogMeIn solutions available. Part of my problem is that I do not have local admin access to my work computer.
The desktop app for TeamViewer will launch on my work PC, and it will allow for remote connections, but this is pretty clearly commercial usage of the product, and therefore would require buying a terribly expensive license.
Here's what I'm thinking.
* Install Windows 7 on a virtual machine on an HTPC that is on 24/7.
* Install TeamViewer desktop app on the Win7 VM. (connecting to my personal, home network would not be commercial use)
* While connected to my VM, connect to my work VPN server and then launch RDP to my work computer.
Thoughts? Will this be too laggy?
An alternative would be to use Putty/RDP (jailbreak required) to connect to my HTPC via ssh tunnel and then connect to the VPN server.
Until a native VPN client is provided, I think I will need to do this two step process...
Any feedback is appreciated....

I've used this method:
- a 24/7 nettop at home with Windows 7 and a public IP address. Nettop allows incoming RDP connections.
- a VPN client on that nettop that allows connection to my office. I'm using ShrewSoft VPN as it is compatible with our VPN and it works fine through an RDP session.
- an RDP client on my phone or WinRT tab
When I need to connect to my workplace - I RDP into my home nettop, establish a VPN connection on it, then run RDP client on nettop to connect to my work PC. Speed is fine.
Long time ago I was thinking about making an app based on the OpenVPN sources that would not require any drivers. That app would allow you to make a tunnel to the specified port of a specified IP inside your work network - similar to SSH tunneling. But this is just an idea - would never have time to work on it.

Ahh! i spent many a day in talks with Juniper right up to a roundtable of management about a 64bit VPN client not being available. In the process of investigating the replacement i found Shrewsoft VPN http://www.shrew.net/download/vpn
It will connect to your juniper and they also provide a guide on how to do so. If you get stuck let me know and i can share some of my config. I use this successfully on both 32 and 64bit wind7/win8. In fact i just finished installing and using it on my new ASUS VivoTab Smart.
Could anyone provide me with a lot of assistance? I've been very interested in using a VPN for my computer and phone for awhile, as well as a proxy, and other means of privacy. I just get lost in a sea of information, I just want reliable, secure. I mean, I want to make sure the government of Japan can't track me down (example obviously).

check out pirate bay, they have a vpn recommended but it's not like your site to site vpn. you could then use something like proxys.org and proxy through that then you'll be annonymised by the vpn and again by the proxy.

Thanks. I've done something similar, and it seems to be working fine. I don't have dedicated hardware, so I've used a vm, but speed is working ok.
Shrew Soft looks interesting... I need to check it out.
Fire HD 8 (7th Gen, 5.6.0.0) has No Manual VPN option in wireless setting. But I want to use pptp on it. So, what do i need to use PPTP option. My VPN server's android application just give UDP and TCP.
Do I need to root it or Do I need to install some applications?
Help plz.
I have this issue also. New HD10, and no VPN menu in Wifi settings. I don't want to use a VPN service, I just want to VPN to my home router when I'm out on a public WiFi. I do have Google Play installed. Is there an app there that will work for this?
How have you solved it? I've just found out this lack and i don't know how to solve it.
There are plenty of VPN clients on the Play Store that let you use your own.
Can lakitu47 (or anyone) suggest some VPN apps that I can use to reinstate VPN now it's gone from Fire OS so I can connect in to my own VPN-router?
My router supports L2TP with pre-shared Key -- which works fine with Android and iOS built-in VPN clients. Have tried downloading the FortiClient app but can't get it to correctly-VPN to my router.

Did anyone get this to work? I have a pureVPN account and loaded the app, but due to the Kindle Fire restrictions I am only able to use UDP or TCP, which means it doesn't work with apps like iplayer etc.
Was anyone able to get a L2TP or PPTP to work with the Kindle Fire HD 8?
