Can't send picture messages - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello again...
I've been having this picture messaging problem for awhile now and it is beyond annoying at this point.
I'm running cm7.1, dark horse theme, handcent, launcher pro, and the usual root apps.
So far I have tried wiping everything (caches, data, etc), restoring a nandroid backup, reflashing cm, reinstalling handcent and messages both from backups and from fresh apks, deleting telephony.db, sending with and without wifi, changing apn, changing network, and every combination of system and app settings I could come up with. I have even tried in different places... Home, car, stores... Nothing has worked... the pictures won't send in either app (handcent or messages) it just hangs there with the little spinning send thing for days until I delete it.
I've done forum searches for help and that's where I got most of the things above that I have tried but nothing is working.
How the heck do I get back my ability to send pictures?
Oh and apparently I can receive them fine, at least I have gotten one recently, but none will send.
Please, please help.
Thanks!
Jen

Is data turned on?
And does data work for other applications?
MMS only works over data, not wifi or regular phone signal.
Do you have a firewall protecting your data use? That one gets me all the time. I only allow certain apps to access data, but every time I get a new app it takes me 10 minutes of wondering why it doesn't work to remember that I block data to apps as the default.

Son of a B...well, I feel stupid.
Yup... I use Droidwall. Didn't even think of it. Turned it off for handcent and messaging and boom...6 old pictures sent. LOL
Times that Thanks by a thousand...I am in your debt.

Dude, Droidwall is one of my favorite apps because it works so well. It's saved me countless amounts of data traffic I'm sure. I don't know what I'd do with out it. And I STILL forget it's there.
What's worse is that after I responded to your post, I downloaded a new app and just like I said I always do I spent 5 minutes fumbling with it to figure out why the app couldn't connect to the internet. It gets me literally every single time with a new app.

Grrrrr well that may not have been the only problem. :-( Was working fine after that, now tried to send one today and it won't send... Been trying all day... First thing I checked was the Droidwall and the data, but it is still set correctly. I wonder if some other app could be interfering?

Does anyone have ANY further thoughts on this? Since that last post I still have not been able to send any pics through messages.

All text messages deleted randomly.

Hey guys, I wanted to see if any fellow vibrant uses have been getting this.
This is the second time this has happened to me. Just out of no where I will launch my sms application (handcent) and the all of my texts are gone, like magic....
I have done alot of looking and found out that this is an old problem that is general for any android user. Wanted to see if anyone know the solution to what is causing this.

This just happened to me recently. I also use handcent. I dont know if this is the case for you, but I am a packrat, so I had a lot of messages.
I think the limit of SMS messages that can be stored on the phone is 5,000. The only thing that didnt make any sense is that not ALL of my messages were gone, I had 8 left from a recent conversation. I cant explain why they werent deleted...
We can start narrowing things down though. If you dont think you reached the phones limit, then maybe it is a Handcent bug, or a bug with TouchWiz.
it use to happen to me before when i had i believe was the mytouch slide at that time but i cant recall. and yes it happened when i had over 3000+ for my GF and like around 200 for other people! Now i usually just get to 600 or less and delete it and start over. I use the stock sms app btw and have no problems at all.
It happened to me too, not the first or second time it have always happened from the start. I don't use handcent, everything is untouched with no root.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Hmmm...a few people claim that this stopped after they uninstalled the antivirus app. However, I never used this app so it can't mean that. On top of that, many claim that this was due to 3rd party app. That wouldn't make any sence because if uninstalling different apps will fix it.
A few also mentioned that installing the sms back up also stopped the problem. It was also mentioned that handcent has an update coming that said they would fix it but that was almost a year ago. I couldn't find anything on the handcent website that fixed the issue. A lot of android users have the same issue as us on their forum. There are at least 10+ posts on this topic, non with a solution....

Have you removed the settings to delete old messages when limits are reached?
or have u edited those settings in the messaging app?
That's the first thing I checked
it's unchecked, no limits and no deleting if old text messages. Here's the thing, even if that was enabled, it would only delete after reaching the limit and keep it at that. What happened was that all the text messages just disappeared...
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
This used to happen to me on the G1 on occasion. I got around the issue by using the CyanogenMod Messaging application and setting the auto-delete limit to 200 messages per person, and using the free SMS Backup application to export all SMS messages to a label Gmail as they're received. I'm still using the same solution on the Vibrant, and I've had no problems since.
I didn't think that cyanogenmod is available for the samsung vibrant yet...or am i missing something?

The CyanogenMod 5 (Android 2.1) Messaging app can be installed over the Vibrant's Messaging app just fine. Download a CM5.0.8 ROM for the Nexus One and install the Messaging.APK found in \system\data. :]
I'll give it a shot and see how it goes.

My text messages just disappeared.

So I was in the middle of a text conversation and put my phone back in my pocket. I received another text, pulled it out, and my inbox was a barren wasteland. I disabled all the options for deleting old messages, so what gives? Is there some kind of mystery limit I'm unaware of? Did my messages just disappear into the void with all those odd socks I lost in the dryer? Was my conversation too hot to handle?
If my text message archives are going to disappear, at the very least they could leave a permanent root solution in their wake.
Sorry that I don't have a solution but your problem doesn't surprise me. There have been plenty of times that I have rebooted my phone (purposefully) and been brought up to the first time registration screen for the phone/android service.
This has happened to me three times since I got my phone on 10/05/10!
I have all the default text message settings and I text a lot, ~10k a month, figured it was just getting too full and crashing the app, sometimes it takes forever when it "refreshes"
yesterday all my bookmarks for the internet disappeared and my phone rebooted by its self a few times i didnt know what was going on
I have your text messages.
If you ever want to see them again then you will get a suitcase and fill it with unmarked, non-sequential bills!
Yep, you're not the only one, twice this week. Lucky for me I back up all my messages but damn if that didn't scare the sh!t out of me.
I hope somebody can explain why this happens & how to stop it.
I have the same issue. any solutions how to fix this?
Oh my god! My messages just disappeared too and I don't think I have an sms backup.. And i need them back. What do I do ? I can't afford to lose them!

haha.. you are so helping!
I read your earlier message as complete sarcastic drivel. Is was rather humorous, read that way. As to your problem I would recommend a program called sim card data recovery. You should be able to restore your messages that way
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Which program are you referring to? Can't narrow it down on google. Could you please link me?
Also, the messages were not on the sim card, but on the phone memory or sd card (Wherever the desire hd stores by default)
I have not used a specific program, I have just been told that is the way to go. Not to sure if the messages are on the sim or the internal memory, but I'm guessing they would have to go through the sim to send, leaving a trace. That could be retrieved.

Had this happen to me once a few months ago when I was running CM6 RC3. Not sure what caused it and haven't been able to re-produce the issue since (thankfully).
I know the problem is not isolated to CM as I have read other threads with people running Stock or Sense ROM's having the same thing happen.
If they're really that valuable, a backup is probably a good idea. For me it was just a bit annoying but nothing important that I needed...
so no solution to this problem yet? i looked at various forums discussing this problem. good thing i only lost 2 messages as i had them backed up.
i am using chompsms and thought it was due to it, but apparently this happens without any 3rd party applications
keeping an eye on this thread to see if somebody comes up with an explanation, or even better, a solution
I have had this happen to me. i was using Virtuous ROM at the time. They all disappeared from my phone and also from HTCSence site aswell. I have stopped trusting both of them now and use SMSBackup+ which (as the name implies) backs all sms to a folder in your gmail account.
This has happened to me multiple times (+3) using Virtuous.
i had originally backed up my text via Titanium Backup, and I flashed my phone and installed CM7, when i tried backing up, the texts wouldn't reappear, so i thought, "oh well"
Few days later while I'm texting, my phone suddenly reboots and all the texts are back again..
But the other day they randomly disappeared again...
Me too
Happened to me today as well, CM 6.1
...really pissed about it, argh. Does stock do this?

Huge sms problem.

I have noticed this for problem since having stock droid. I've used apex jrummey and tranquility n stock. It seems my texts get hung in limbo. Both receiving and outgoing. It doesn't happen all the time but enough for me to do my recovery method everytime I send a text.
It just seems to sit in queue ready to be sent.
What I have to do is make a call, any call, vm, friend etc... then msgs are sent through and received. Seems to be happening more and more.
Anyone else have this problem and how they get a permanent fix.
Thanks in advance

Nobody? Hasn't done it in about a week but still annoying when it does happen.
Thanks

Did you remove the stock messaging app?
In the messaging app's settings, do you have auto retrieve turned on?
Or if you are restoring apps, might try going into settings/applications/ choose all & in messaging.apk clear data & cache (will erase txts) & even do the same for gmail (will not erase emails unless they are in pending/draft possibly, others will just reload when you open again).
Or sbf & then back to your rom of choice. Might be a bit of a pain, but could be worth it.
I think if it happened with the stock rom its either the phone or the service from Verizon? Try taking your phone in and see what they say

I use to have the problem in my area. I discovered it was poor service, and when I called out like to voicemail it would send and receive.
I just did the *228 and made sure the radios were up to date and haven't had the problem since.

[Q] Why are my text messages deleting?

Happening to anyone else? I have about 8,000 sms/mms saved on my phone. The more I get, the more frequent they get deleted. I run titanium 2x/day, but I'd like to know WHY it's happening.
I'm using handcent, not the stock app. I do not have the auto-delete function enabled. I've searched around the T-Mo forums, and the only "answer" i've found was to enable auto-delete, and set the max text storage to 5,000. Well, that won't work for me.
Same problem
I dont know if this is the same thing but i had kinda the same problem a few days ago when all of my texts just deleted and i have been getting force closes recently. I dont know whats going on but I would love to get a fix for it.
Reflash your Rom?

Is auto delete disabled in stock app? Even if you are using non stock sms app, the stock one is still looking at the data base i think.

[Q] Nexus 4 MMS problem

I have a Nexus 4 (bought from Google) with the stock ROM and it's up to date running 4.2.2 on T-Mobile USA. I've tried reading up on the problems that others are having with their Nexus 4 and MMS and no one seems to be having the exact problem that I am having. I always turn my data off so I conserve battery power, it has never given me problems with other phones in terms of receiving/sending MMS messages, data would come on briefly when receiving/sending an MMS with other phones, but the Nexus 4 doesn't do that automatically. When data is on I receive them fine it seems. For a while I didn't know why I wasn't getting MMS messages. Then I installed LightFlow lite for the LED notification colors, I gave MMS messages and SMS messages different LED notification colors. Then I would get notified only by the LED notifier when an MMS was coming through, but I still wouldn't get the message, nor was there an audible notification. Sometimes I am able to turn on my data before opening the messaging app (stock one) after I notice the MMS LED notifier blinking. Other times they will come through the next day when I turn the data on, and sometimes I never get them. This is the only phone that has done this, my Android HD2, Sensation, and other phones haven't given me any problems, whether I had the stock ROM or changed it out. The problem seems to lie in how the data from the cell tower doesn't get turned on by the messaging app when the MMS is being sent/received. If I knew how to enable the messaging app to be able to do that, then I wouldn't have that problem. I have also tried using the facebook messenger/SMS app and I think goSMS, I don't remember either one helping the situation.
Please don't respond with "well turn your data on" or "this isn't a problem because you have your data off, so you don't receive MMSs". I'm used to my other phones turning the data on when an MMS is coming through. This one does not, I like being able to stretch my battery life.
Can this be alleviated by changing out my ROM? I'm wanting to swap ROMs anyway, so I've been researching which ones I would like to switch to. The other reason I want to change ROMs is I'm having problems with other stock apps that I can't uninstall and reinstall, like google maps always says my GPS is turned off when GPS and data are both on. I can use the mapquest app fine without getting the GPS error, it's something with google maps.

Ok your issue is that those other phones would automaticlly turn your data on when an MMS would come in and then turn it back off. This has to built in on the OS level which AOSP doesnt support. You are not gonna find anything to fix this.

ok. so since it is an OS level thing.then it would depend on what the developer has done with the new ROM that I install then? Maybe I'll end up getting a ROM that would work then?

They would need to add it to the AOSP source code in the messaging app but do to the restrictions that AOSP has for programs changing system settings, I wouldnt bet on it. Non of the roms here work that way. I use AF firewall for to control data

My "auto retrieve" is selected, and always has been to my knowledge. My problem is the MMS not getting sent or received when I have my data turned off. The messenger app isn't turning on the data to allow it to be sent/received.
I do like the idea that zelendel stated about using the firewall. I hadn't thought about that.

Yeah, my plan is 200 MBs a month. I selected that, I don't need more. I only check email, facebook, forums, and do google searches from the phone, and the occasional directions. It never goes over 50 MB, unless a few apps start hogging data (geico brostache app for example). It's either ads or geico is collecting data about my location/driving. I have to kill it with my app killer after I use it because it will go over my 200MB limit after a few days.
Yeah I use AFwall donate. You can set it up to allow apps to only use Wifi or cell data, none or both.
