So I have ameradroid cm7 and the mms just wont work. The data connection turns on for a second or two turns off and says mms failed to download. I tried uninstalling the mms and installing a new one and changing the user agent to NexusOne and Nexus S and northern worked. Also I want the text messages on a white background but when I change the settings it says I must restart the messaging for it to take effect but it never actually takes effect.
nobody? i really need a fix
Are you sure you have all the right settings in the APN?

ok lets see if i can help. changing the user agent usually fixes it, but double check your apn settings for your operator, cause usually if the data bubble turns on then off, its usually having communication hurdles on the mms servers.
and on the background part, change the settings, and COMPLETELY BACK OUT of the messaging app. once you do that ure settings should be kept intact, or you can do the apn and change the background and restart it to be safe
good luck and let me know

Hi,
I have a Samsung Vibrant. As I'm in Australia, I was playing around trying to connect to another frequency via *#*#4636#*#* > Phone information. I set it to AUS and backed out (pretty sure that's all I did). Then I couldn't send any texts .... at all. Failed.
I switched back to Automatic frequency - no difference....
I have re-falshed the OS with Odin, both with the most recent 2.1 release and also with one that is supplied on the xda post "OFFICIAL T-Mo Vibrant JFD ODIN/Nandroid Backup Images" (I'm not allowed to post links) (I've still got this one installed right now). Both made absolutely no difference.
I deleted all user data... no difference.
Now I have a stock phone entirely, that will not send any text messages.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
Andrew
I've noticed that SMSC is blank - I tried to set it to the right number: +61411990001, but it just returns 'update error'. So I tried 0411990001. It didn't 'do' anything, but didn't return an error. It disappeared when I backed out and came back in. it didn't fix the problem.
Is there a trick to updating the SMSC that I've missed? It seems likely to be the error??
there is also no information in 'Your Phone number', and I recall that the default way to access voicemail never worked because of 'no voicemail number on the sim card'...... does this all add up to my sim card not having the correct default information? Is there a way to fix this?
....help

Here are a few tips:
1 in mobile settings click apn and make sure there is a green circle on thee right of the name for your apn. If not just tap on the circle once and out should turn green.
2 in mobile settings, click automatic network discovery then try step 1 again
3 open mms app, press menu and go to settings. Make sure auto retrieve is checked.
Let me know if this works or not.

@crazy25000: Thanks heaps, that led me in the right direction to correct the texting issue. I had no apn at all - no options and had to add it manually. I'm not sure that it worked, but perhaps. I did get to the right settings menu to fix the smsc number though, which is great.
I still feel like my sim card is not quite right - there seems to be no default data for the carrier on the sim.
Immediate problem solved though. thanks again.
i have done the same thing while fiddling with my vibrant. sms wont send because the gateway # is blank . what i did was pop it in a friends iphone and type **5005*7672*61411990001#
(61411990001 is optus smsc # yours may be different)
then i put it back in my vibrant and viola!
altho i still cant send or recieve mms..

Glad to great it's slowly getting resolved. If you don't have an apn, click on automatic network discovery in mobile settings and it will automatically generate the correct apn for your carrier. Keep me posted because this it's relatively easy to resolve so don't stress

Hey
Im on Orange UK And updated to froyo using the reg hack.
But now i cannot send Picture messages,
Iv tried manually entering the APN details many many times but the pictures just sit on sending, iv tried another sim card and its exactly the same.
Anyone have any ideas??
Check your APN settings - for some reason mine disappeared! If there's nothing showing hit menu and restore default. Then reboot your device.

Thanks for the suggestion, but still no joy
Solution?
I fixed this using Samsung's very useful set up page. Allows you to get settings sent to your phone for free, on any UK network.
http://www.samsungmobile.co.uk/support/configure-phone-setting-mms.do?phone_model=GT-I9000
I did a search, but found no answers. I can receive text messages with pictures just fine, but if I try to send them, I get the "failed after several attempts" and the message just sits there with the envelope and clock icon in the upper right corner. I tried through the default messaging app, and through ChompSMS. Is anyone else having a problem sending pictures through text messages?
You need to find your carriers APN settings and enter them correctly in the phones settings:
Settings > Wireless & networks > mobile networks > Access Point Name

Thanks for replying. I'll try that. I did check the settings, and there is a default one there with no mms info. I checked my nexus one, and I don't have any apn settings at all, but mms works. Do you think if I delete the one that's there it would work by auto detecting setting? Maybe that's why my n1 works, and my DHD doesn't?
Delete ALL APN's on your DHD and then re-add them manually, then you can be 100% sure they're all correct, if it still doesn't work then contact your carrier and see what's going on.
SOLVED!
WOW! It took me six hours, but I figured it out. I tried so many things I can't even remember. Deleted all, add three at once, modified things. The end result was still no sending of MMS. My last try I reset everything back to default, and I was checking all fields, and noticed the "MMSC" field said "null". Well from looking over so many different configurations I noticed almost all of them showed the MMSC had "mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc", so out of desperation I changed "null" to that, and BOOM, it worked. I now have all things working like they should. Thanks for your help.
( glad you sorted it.

Hey guys. this just started happening to me yesterday. Handcent refuses to download mms messages. I hit the download button, it blinks over to 'downloading' like it's supposed to, but then switches right back to the download button with no results. I've tried fully restarting the phone and still, nothing happens. I've checked for any available updates in the Market and there's nothing available.
Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Any tips/tricks to get this working for me?
I've had that happen before. Try clearing cache or cache and data from the app. If that don't work, uninstall it and download/install from market.

Okay so, i went into settings > applications > manage applications > Handcent Messenger and the only option i can find that seems like a cache clear is clear data, which i would assume wipes out all my past convo's. Where should i be looking to clear the cache?
This happened to me on Saturday as well. I received an MMS and I couldn't download it. I was on Wi-Fi at the time so I decided to switch over to 3G and it seemed to do the trick.
Mistasal has a point. WiFi will often take precedence over network and mms won't travel over WiFi. I just assumed you could clear cache. I just reinstalled when it happened to me. Plus you can save all sms/mms with apps like sms backup+ they are free and restore your convos.

The newest version has bugs that's causing the problems. If you could, roll back to version 3.7.9
The phone is supposed to switch to 3g to download mms. You still have the stock messaging app installed? Are you able to download the attachment with that? If not, you could try updating your profile (settings/update/update profile).
Handcent has lots of good issues, but it's downfall is wake lock issues when received messages are not checked. This has been somewhat less of an issue with cm7, but any subsequent messages throw the program into a wakelock state. To clarify, you receive one text, don't look at it. At this point, handcent uses only a few seconds in a wakelock state. Now, repeat test, but also receive a 2nd text (so now 2 unread texts). Wakelock state will be present until you unlock the phone. Not good.
Oddly enough, my phone only d/l's and sends MMS when WiFi is on. If I'm on 3G, I can only sent text messages. Handcent always gave me so much trouble with htis, I only use stock MMS now.
Your phone supposedly isn't supposed to download mms over wifi, only 3g/1x. Also, go to your stock messaging app, settings, and make sure your "auto retrieve" box is checked.

I dunno about the data connection. It worked when wifi was on and didn't work while it was off.
I'm also not able to download images in the stock messenger unless i'm on wifi.
Finally, if i turn on the auto-retrieve, i'll have two sets of messages to check.
You can have auto retrieve on, but you need notifications turned off in stock

Same issue with my Galaxy S4 GPE on KitKat 4.4.2. Unable to d/l any MMS. Really frustrating.
alright so im on the echo rom Via the verizon pf2 firmware. Selected sprint during the setup process. I have voice and messaging working. i edited the build props.... still no data. any advice anyone?
google your service providers apn settings and enter them in and if that didnt work after you did what was said i would go back and redo everything and slow down to make sure i did it all in order etc, sometimes a second run through will make it work
i hve them. the keybord im using now is messed up. some letters nd shift key re out.. i will type them up on something else nd post themwen i get min.
My experience is actually kind of strange. When I rooted my phone I actually lost the ability to edit APN. It does not show up anywhere in my phone. I had to edit the build.prop to get it working right. My messaging works but not picture messages which sucks. So I use a messaging app called 8sms and it fixes all my APN issues.
