[Q] Dlna app with AntoniomistrettA (fantastic) rom - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

I've found the dlna.apk file in /system/app but it doesn't appear in the applications... does it works or not?
Due to this absurd restriction of ten messages I must post a new thread... cause I don't want to use mp again with Antonio

Check this out.

[WIP] /system/app APK's - Safe to remove list and functions

I thought it would be a good idea to have a list of the files in system/app that are okay to remove.
Always do a nandroid backup before making changes to your phone. I am not responsible for phones caught in bootloops, synclocks, or any other issues.
The apk's are pretty self explanatory, and the ones that are not, I will try to include a brief description. So please read the list carefully and only remove files you do not use.

--Don't freak out if there's no .odex file to remove. I think the .odex file only appears after you run the app. If you did a factory reset, there will be no .odex file.

This is what I have so far, so please feel free to comment and add any other files that are safe to remove from the stock rom. And also, if you see any on the list that should not be, please let me know.
Thanks.
*names of apks may be slightly different, I will be using the names from stock 2.2*
I strongly recommend root explorer from the market to navigate to /system/data. You should then click on "Mount R/W" to mount the files as readable/writable instead of the default read only. When you are done, click on "Mount R/O" to prevent further changes.

Thanks for the input. My EVO is at the sprint store right now so I cannot test those out, but I did not want to list Sense apks because some people prefer sense. If you can remember/look at the exact apk names, I will update the OP with a note saying it is needed for sense.
updated list with a few other apks
I have seen a couple other threads like this but most came out when the phone did and I don't know if they've been updated. The biggest thing, at least I think, is that you should let people know what each apk does. I've removed a lot that I don't need like NewsReaderWidget.apk but there are others like TelephonyProvider.apk that I have no idea what it does so I haven't touched it. I googled around a bit but I still haven't been able to find an answer to what it does.

I think Sprint_Promotion.apk is required for *2 to function, otherwise it force closes. If you need that service don't delete it. Maybe you could asterisk that entry.

Just as a note, you can always use #2, or 611 from your phone and it does the same thing as *2 but doesn't force close. This allows you to remove that Sprint_Promotion.apk without encountering the issue.
And while a list of what's safe to remove would be good, it would also be more awesome to describe what each application does as well.
If I recall correctly:
Mode10Wallpapers.apk - This is the colorful HTC live wallpaper.
MagicSmokeWallpapers.apk - Google's Magic Smoke live wallpapers.
PicoTts.apk - This is the text-to-speech engine for Android.
TtsService.apk - Also part of the text-to-speech engine for Android.
Edit: You also have mail.apk listed twice in your list. XD
I have removed DCSStock.apk, DCSImpl.apk, DCSUtility.apk without issue.
PCSII.apk is needed for adb/usb functions.
EPST.apk is needed for ##DATA#, phone commands.

I'll make a note in the OP. I will be able to start testing again tomorrow. My replacement EVO got backordered but Sprint told me today that I should be expecting it tomorrow
Until then, can you test it out again, make sure no other apps are running?
Thanks a lot.
I am 99% sure you can remove PCSII.apk without causing any problems. It just removed the "HTC Sync" functionality. ADB remains.
I haven't done it with my EVO because I've ran Cyanogen since day one, but I did it with my Hero without issue.

I haven't removed them in a while (before 2.2 came out) but when I did it, I tested it a few times because it didn't make much sense to me. When I removed them, the phone never slept but if I did a Nandroid restore of the system directory, it went back to normal. There were no other app changes at all. I think another app is calling them from what I remember seeing in the logcat. I didn't dig into it too much because it's not that big of a deal to leave them in there. The only reason I tried to remove them in the first place is because IQAgent gave me problems on the Moment, seems to be okay on the EVO though.
i am wondering if anyone would find it useful if i work up a flashable script to jsut remove all the known ok apks?
I have a script i already use that has most of them it shouldnt be ahrd setting up a signed flashable one. I am thinking one with sense and one that will remove sense as well.

I saw here was a reference to Polaris Office which seems to be only available on the Transformer. It sure looks like it would be nice to have on my Acer. Google search will take to the company's web site, but there is no download/purchase link. There are some YouTube videos showing in action.
I have found a version of Polaris that works (I have tested it). Some guy took it from the rom and posted it on the internet and I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post the link since it's not for our devices. I'll post the link if a mod gives us a green light.
I can just say that it works nicely and that it performs and looks way better than my paid version of Quickoffice. I'm actually sorry that I've bought it now.
Edit: Mod Edit: XDA rules prevent to use OEM apps outside any custom/stock Rom so link removed. If you want any OEM app just download any custom Rom that does include it.Here is the file[/URL] (instructions as to where to copy the libs are included). App works fine on my tablet but you do need root to copy the needed libs.
I thought Polaris was crap and avoided it for a while - now it's my go-to Office suite on Iconia.
I got it from another link, but just in case users come across this thread in search, if Polaris Office force-closes for you whenever you actually try and open something, it's usually because the permissions of the lib files you copied into /system/lib need to be updated.
You can do this using a free root browser like File expert (if I recall). Enable root exploring in its options, then pop into /system/lib and confirm the polaris office libs match the permissions of the surrounding files.
quickoffice HDpro for me and I like it....

FTP on ARC S not working!

Hi all,
If you visit this forum you are probably interested in rooting your phone however here is a word of warning in case you can't root a SonyEricsson Arc S. This is unfortunately also my case as my Arc S is a company phone so I can't fiddle too much with it.
Anyway, the Arc S has a quantity of bloatware pre-installed that cannot be removed unless you root your phone. One piece of this bloatware is the Facebook UploadManager process that keeps running all the time and will restart automatically if you kill it.
This process has been coded by Facebook to use ftp and will hijack any other file transfer based on FTP. Any FTP client you install will fail to transfer files because of this background process. If you want to transfer small files you can kill the Facebook process and hope that your FTP transfer finishes before the facebook crap restarts, for large files you are out of luck.
As a side comment: SonyEricsson is obviously getting money from Facebook to make this crap non-removable by the end customer. There is absolutely no reason to make this pre-installed stuff non removable!
I really wish Google issued stricter terms and conditions to companies that license the Android OS to stop them from doing this. I am really questioning Google's business model of allowing Android to become a trojan horse for unwanted stuff running on your phone without permission.
simple solution: root with doomlords easy rooting kit and remove facebook.apk from /system/app by using root explorer or anything similar.. then if u want it back just reinstall it from the market it won't be running in the background if you don't use it trust me
Perhaps you didn't read the part where I say that I can't root my phone.
lol why not, even if its a company phone you can r oot it and unroot when you're done with removing the facebook apk?

Yes I have just done it and I have removed at least 5 or 6 turds of facebook ****. I hope the unroot thingy works if I need to unroot in the future...

Usually it should work and if it doesn't just flash a new firmware using PCC or SEUS, then the root is also gone.
if you flash another FW the facebook beast will come back
but the doomlord unrooting kit works as long as you stick with the firmware you've rooted and DO NOT make changes to the busybox installed(e.g. installing a higher version) !
Hell FTP keeps failing after removing almost all background processes. It seems that the problem was not due to the facebook upload manager process!
Is anyone successfully using an ftp client on this phone? I really don't know what else I can try...
Which FTP client do you use?
Then I'll try if it's working for me.
I have tried AndFTP, ES File Explorer and a third one and they all fail with large files. In my case I'm trying to transfer FLAC files...
I have also tried changing ports and both active and passive modes. If I try to transfer a folder with 10 files it will usually fail after 2 or 3 minutes so sometimes the first file goes fine...
Okay, I'll try this later at work and give a feedback.
I use SwiftFTP on my arc (not arc s). seems to be working fine. i'm unrooted, using stock firmware 2.3.4 (4.0.2.A.0.42)
As far as I understand Swiftp is an FTP server that runs on the phone to make the phone files accessible remotely. I need to do the opposite and I need a client on the phone...
Just tried to transfer a folder with 700 MB several times and after 1-2 minutes it fails every time.
I don't really need it, so it doesn't matter for me, but sorry that I can't help you.
Ok Thanks... so I guess it is not related to something I installed on my phone... do you mind letting me know what ROM you are using and what running programs you see in "Settings"...
(Nevermind about the ROM... I can see it in your signature)...
Just a few running services, don't think anything would trouble.

Yes I tried FtpCafe, AndFTP and ES File Explorer and I get the same error from all of them. All these clients work fine if I transfer small files that take only a few seconds to complete.
Can you reliably transfer a folder with several large (40 MB) files taking several minutes without problems?
If that's the case then perhaps you can give us more details about your phone... which ROM you are using, which background services are running, etc...
all works fine when transfer 40MB > ,,
edit your FtpCafe preferences > Socket connection timeout > No timeout.
also check your server about timeout.
am still on stock kernel & ROM. (rooted)
Sent from my LT18i using Tapatalk
I have tried to change that parameter in FtpCafe but it doesn't make any difference in my case. I have also tried changing the buffer size in FtpCafe and transfers seem a bit more reliable with a larger buffer but eventually they will fail anyway.
One thing I have noticed in your screenshots is that your transfer is slow... Probably you are not ftping over a local network. I think this could be an indication that I am hitting a socket flow control problem in Android that appears only with fast transfers of data.
I can transfer files without any timeout issue if I use the smb protocol between the pc and the phone; smb is much slower than ftp and perhaps that's the reason why it works in my scenario...

[Q] Apps in tytungs ICS 4.0.3 CM9 v1.3

I posted this in the v1.3 thread but no replies in like nearly 10 pages, so here it is.
Every time I install a new ROM (I never update) I remove a lot of system apps I don't use to save space like the live wallpapers, email.apk, exchange.apk etc. I've been wondering, just because, is it possible to remove these (see below) .apk's safely just since I don't think I need them anymore.
BackupRestoreConfirmation.apk
ChromeBookmarksSyncAdapter.apk
OneTimeInitializer.apk
SetupWizard.apk
VpnDialogs.apk
WAPPushManager.apk
It would be nice to know what these apps do. From when I had my SE u20i OneTimeInitializer.apk was used to download mobile data settings at first boot, is that correct? So I would assume that is obsolete now?
VpnDialogs.apk I don't think I need as I don't use a vpn, correct?
SetupWizard.apk I assume is for setting up a google account? If I've already done that do I really need this as I'm not going to delete it?
ChromeBookmarksSyncAdapter.apk If I don't use Chrome, on my HD2 or my laptop or desktop do I really need this? I'm assuming it is the sync of bookmarks to my google account?
The other two I have no idea about. Also, if any apps, these included can be removed before flashing the ROM to save space on /system it would be nice to know that was well.
If someone could please help me with is or point me in the right direction of info, that would be greatly appreciated.
Btw I have searched. (Just in case someone tries to tell me to do that)
Cheers,
Evil.
These apps are core system apps. You can't remove them. Yes, there are some which can be removed but not these.
That's not entirely true vpndialogs isn't a core system app but I just really want to know what they do and then if they are crucial to first boot or not. I guess alot of testing can tell me if they are crucial, but I still don't know what they do????? And that's the main point of me starting this question thread.

BackupRestoreConfirmation.apk (dunno...but freezing it instantly after fresh flash..save)
ChromeBookmarksSyncAdapter.apk (sync's your bookmarks from pc chrome if installed...deleted this one before flashing...save)
OneTimeInitializer.apk( seemes it cinfigures your provider setup...but doesn't really know. So try to freez and change SIM-card...if you get errors on next startup, you are sure!)
SetupWizard.apk (initialize first setup after fresh flash...needed only this time. After that it is save to delete or freeze. BUT it is needed for first boot otherwise you get bootloops!)
VpnDialogs.apk (dunno...doesn't use VPN)
WAPPushManager.apk
* The WapPushManager service is implemented to process incoming
* WAP Push messages and to maintain the Receiver Application/Application
* ID mapping. The WapPushManager runs as a system service, and only the
* WapPushManager can update the WAP Push message and Receiver Application
* mapping (Application ID Table). When the device receives an SMS WAP Push
* message, the WapPushManager looks up the Receiver Application name in
* Application ID Table. If an application is found, the application is
* launched using its full component name instead of broadcasting an implicit
* Intent. If a Receiver Application is not found in the Application ID
* Table or the WapPushManager returns a process-further value, the
* telephony stack will process the message using existing message processing
* flow, and broadcast an implicit Intent.

This was a big help thank you.
As I understand it, the wappushmanager.apk is only useful when sending and receiving sms push msgs??
So if that is correct I wouldnt need it as I don't send or receive push msgs (i dont even think my carrier supports it), unless every sms is handled as a push msg, in which case the wappushmanager.apk is necessary.
I will do some testing and post back here with my findings.
The reason I want to know all this info is because I'm going to start a thread for people with small sdcards, so they can reduce the size of the system before flashing to save space for data instead of a data script.
Thank you for your help,
Evil.

Don't know in your case, I had no problems with kodi 16th version. I'm doing that: downloading kodi last build of 16 beta 1 (i think it's now beta 2 is available) also I downloading the beast addon package (torrent file from his website http://spartanpixel.net/Kodi/thebeast/ ) unrar the beast package, find appropriate package where in the beast "addons only" location - manually copy on your computer and paste/transfer to shield root kodi directory where addon location (can't tell you exact path, I'm not at home now) . After start kodi and whollaa you have Genesis, Fenix and many many all other really kind of good addons - wait until addons update (if you have issues with updates - kind of not updating - try find in youtube for help- keyword : kodi addons update problem etc) and should works fine. Why I choose this way?! Coz this is easiest way get big collection of really good addons. Why not simply install through zip / add sources etc?! Coz the beast only properly works on kodi 15.2, but addons "only that folder if you move" works great on kodi16. Try and let me know how goes.
Also when you will gonna transfer addon folder to shield - turn of Antivirus, otherwise will take ages (or you can do, transfered all the beast downloaded file rar (not extracted) to shield and with es file explore browse for addon folder - copy and paste to kodi appropriate location for addon + it will be faster with transfer. Good luck and sorry for my English.

Thanks for the info. I have Kodi 15 installed, so I'll install the beta and see if it works.
Installed it, but the issue is still present. Not sure what's preventing sources from loading

Sorry to hear that, but don't know how to help you. P.s. Your Internet provider have no kind of restriction, like porn sites or some forums, some torrent sites like pirate bay, kik ass etc, maybe this blocking?
No idea, even didn't hear about this problem...

My ISP does block a few things, but that isn't the problem as I have the same setup on my PC and a Minix box problem free.
Really weird

Just adding my 0.02. I get plenty of sources loaded, sometimes more if I back out and go back in but plenty of them return "no stream available".
I previously used Kodi on AFTV and this was a rare occurence. May just be coincidence with the Shield.

Don't know. I had sometimes too kind of stream problems, but I don't think so this is shield (how can metal can effect on software) . Sometimes after addon update start working without problems, sooner this is addon developer problems - servers down, sources has been changed without addon update, kodi 16 not compatible with some addons etc and etc guessing question, don't know.
