Built in sd card? - Kindle Fire General

According to Titanium back up we have sd card. Could this just be a partition? Maybe their could be a way to open the kindle fire and add a new one.
Sent from my Kindle Fire using xda premium

Nope, no replaceable SD card in the teardown.
The version of Android used in the Fire requires that a partition first be unmounted from the Fire in order to be mounted to your pc when connected to add/remove files. You can't unmount the memory that the OS is using, so they partition the main data folders separately.

The KF uses something called emmc, which is the guts of an SD card on a soldered down chip. Most phones and tablets use this for their internal storage nowadays.

One question, once someone updated this to device to ICS, that issue would be gone right? I mean, AFAIK, ICS and HC use MTP to transfer files (as I discovered when trying to get my Asus Transformer to work on Linux, this only works well in Windows, and maybe Mac - Can't test, as I don't have one). If so, I guess that the internal memory could be re-partitioned in order to free more memory for user data and apps?

[Q] Sd reader

Does anyone know exactly why the sd reader is not working.... like i know we need a firmware update for it, but why exactly hasn't it shipped with the ability to use hardware already installed?
I may be wrong, but i would assume that it couldn't be that hard to just have the software (or w/e it is that would get it to be active) already installed.
Has to do with putting everything on the internal storage. The system needs to be setup for essentially 2 sd cards, I think. I'm probably wrong, but I know it has to do with a change in how Android manages the storage.

I wonder if that's true for the HC preview that's on my Nook Color right now... I should check and post my findings! But I think I couldn't see any SD card.
UPDATE: I just booted the Nook into HC v0.4 and I can access the SD after going into Setting -> Storage and mounting the SD. Whatever HC I have it can find the SD card!

This basically sums it up. Motorola, and probably others with Honycomb, are cheating and mounting some of the internal storage at /sdcard, which is typically reserved for sdcards.
I haven't rooted my device yet, but if someone could put an sd card in the slot and pull the dmesg logs and post them that would be awesome. If the sdcard shows up in dmesg, but isn't mounted I bet we can find a solution. With root privs, you could modify the rc.local file to mount the sd card to /sdcard/realsdcard (probably).
On second thought, this gives me a good reason to root my device....

That's possible! I just saw the /sdcard in the file explorer and assumed it's the SD card. My bad!

Potentially. I'm not familiar with the HC port on the Nook, but do this for me. Pull out the SD card and open up an adb shell on the device. If you can cd to /sdcard they are cheating. If it doesn't exist they are actually using your sdcard.
This doesn't prove anything conclusively though about honeycomb support for sd card readers.
Also, I did a few checks yesterday with the sd card slot and the card doesn't show up in dmesg when you pop it in and out, so it's not exactly going to be easy to get this working.
has there been any word about when it will be released for use?
I'm a little confused, is it going to be honeycomb that is upgraded for us to be able to use it. I dont know as much about mobile devises as I do computers, for some reason I was under the assumption that the firmware of a phone was more like a BIOS of a computer and honeycomb was the os. But is the firmware the os? And the bootloader more, like the BIOS?

Back in the day mobile devices used ROM (read only memory) to store the operating system, it was flashed on there and it would stay between wipes. That's a more appropriate use of the word 'firmware', but it stuck around for today's devices which are little more than a unix based OS on an ARM processor.
The bootloader is not the bios, but it does find the boot partition and tell the kernel to load... the kernel then mounts other partition and starts up the OS. Everything is in simple NAND flash memory now.

Used verygreen's Size-agnostic SD on 1g, formated it and now has 116mb

So i used the verygreen's Size-agnostic SD and Cm7 installer on ma 1g, it turned out great. But i got this 4g now so i wanted to clear ma 1g so it cud be free of space. When i formatted my 1g tho, it told me it only has 116mb space in total. In so lost here can someone help me out?

Are you using an internal SD reader or external? There have been issues reported with internal readers not showing the partitions properly.

Wait, will this work if you're going to be using the microSD to run CM7 off of? In other words, can I reclaim the unallocated space without affecting the boot partition that contains CM7?
I wound up working the other partitions of mine through Ubuntu. Might try downloading a LiveCD, then run it off the CD and start up gparted.
I tried using gparted boot CD and had no luck. I send the card back for RMA.

SD card help

I just picked up a Xoom last week and have been messing with it since and ran into a problem.
I have put in two different SD cards into the top slot and none of them are showing up when browsing with File Manager HD. When I go into Settings->Storage, under SD card it is greyed out and says insert an SD card for mounting.
I don't mind wiping the card, but how do I get the Xoom to recognize the card?
Have u formated it to fat 32?

I just took it out of my phone and tried to stick it in.
The card works fine on my phone and on my Gtab.
I haven't rooted it either.
Ok, so now under SD Card it lets me select Mount SD Card, but nothing happens. Why is it so hard to use this feature?

wow, this sucks monkey balls.
my gtablet running an HC ROM, which doesn't even support HC, can have access to the SD card fine and is changeable between my phone/camera/pc, but for it to work with the XOOM has to be formatted to FAT32. Also, I can't write to it unless I root.
what's the point of the SD card then?
Mine worked straight from a card I had in a LG EnV Touch. I don't know what the deal is. Has your XOOM just come back from the upgrade or is it the WiFi version?

Without root, you can access music, video, pdfs other files from your micro sdcard...up to 32GB, which adds lots of storage. There is no apps-to-sd in Honeycomb, but if you root, you can have R/W access to the micro sdcard and save your nandroids to it, TB backups, write files to it, etc. When you root, you'll find the micro sdcard at mnt/external1, on same directory level as sdcard (32GB internal storage) and mnt/usbOTG. Xoom uses micro sdcard for media storage/playback in non-rooted state and that's fine. But if you root you have a hell of a lot more features. that's our reward for the work (pain) of rooting.

This is the best way I know: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1249798
It can seem pretty daunting but we all did it, some have done it multiple times, and so can you.
In the first section where it talks about setting up adb on your pc, there's a link to an alternate approach to setting up the files. It's supposed to give you just the files needed for rooting and nothing more. I never tried it but you could if you want to...may save a step or two.
Anyway, this guide should have everything you need.
Take your time, print out the instructions and read them carefully. The Xoom was made to be rooted, it's just a complex device, so there's no 'one click' magic.

Fix SD Card Issues(Formatting,Mounting,Errors,Corruption or even Death of Card)

For Guys who have issues with SD Cards (Formatting,Mounting,Errors,Corruption or even Death of Card) :
A full format (uncheck quick format)running HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool is recommended.
Moreover, never ever use SD card Adapters for formatting.Always USB card readers as they are more efficient.
Generic operating system formatters don’t provide the optimum performance. And,sometimes, can result into SD card death and less picture-saving space.
Full format once in awhile is recommended to prevent possible corrupt files, lengthen the life of the card and achieve the most available space possible.
This tool is compatible with Windows XP and vista however Windows 7 users can run this tool in Compatibility mode for Windows 7 by going through :
Properties>Compatibility>Compatibility mode>Check(Run this program in compatibility mode for)>Select Windows 7 from dropdown menu>Apply>OK

Yep,a full format(uncheck quick format) using this tool should solve your problem.I was facing the same issue with one of my cards.
Don't used SD card Adapter for formatting, use a USB card reader.Hope it will get your card back in action.
You can also run surface test using MiniTool Partition Wizard to check any read error in your SD card's memory blocks.
(Right click on your card>surface test)
Good luck:good:

Sorry,I didn't get you.
SD adapter is used to make your micro SD usable on normal SD slot devices. It is not any type of memory.
If you are reffering to a dead micro SD card,a full format (uncheck quick format) using this tool might fix your problem.
Always use USB card readers for the formatting process.

I don't want to be a smart-ass here but seriously... Initially I thought you'd mean a card reader with "SD adapter"... if you're speaking about micro sd adapters: nothing wrong to use those as it's just a kind of "connector extension" - the only thing that might go wrong is that the slot has a mechanical problem. That usually would end up in getting nothing formatted
Anyway thx for the hint with the application - could become useful some time

Yeah,of course, you can transfer files using adapters but USB card reader is recommended for the formatting process.
This tool was created specifically for HP USB devices so only a USB SD card reader can be used as interface device.
The most amazing thing about this tool is ,it does a very deep cleansing. While other formatting tools take 3-4 mints to format an 8GB SD card, this tool takes 4-5 hours to ensure most efficient formatting.I have used and verified this tool personally.Using generic formatting utilities don’t provide optimal performance for your SD cards.
I just thought it might be good to list a tip that might help others with their SD card issues.
I wonder :S
Hi I have a 8GB MicroSD card, suddenly it went slow down.. I formatted it using various applications but it doesn't affect it takes so long to paste a file(s) I dunno but it ask around 25 minutes to paste a 250MB file and sometimes it increases to hours.. I didn't even found any bad sectors.. every sector is ok but it's useless without fast data writing.. anyone ever faced this type of matter? :crying:
I NEED HELP!!! I have a 32gb micro sd card and the above process does not work.
Why is this here? Shouldn't it be somewhere like hardware and software hacking or something...
Anyway dont use adapters makes no sense, like that one guy just said: Its just ... ...

I need some help. I think my 2gb sdcard got corrupted and my willy doesnot reads it anymore although i have tried another sdcard and it works.
So problem is with sdcard. My computer wont recognise it too ( i tried it with my wildfire not with any card reader or adaptor )

Is there a way that i can use any software and plug sdcard in an adaptor ? And format it etc ?
Because i dont own an adaptor or a usb card reader. I'll probably lend an adaptor today but for usb card reader i'll have to wait for a day or two

I doubt it'll help!
This tool was designed to format flash drives and it does a deep format, which is helpful in removing problematic partitions from those drives(sd cards).
I have been using this tool for good 2 years now,it has helped me curing pen drives,sd cards which were already readable on windows.(cured issues like i/o errors, cyclic redundancy issue,etc.).But if windows doesnt read it then I doubt it'll help.
Try with some linux system if you have. But,you can consider your card to be dead sadly.

[Q] Accessing media on internal storage

I hacked a pair of NC's for my kids for Christmas, running Mirage CM7 (seemed the most stable, but I could be wrong). I was planning on waiting a bit on the micro SD's and just running off of the 1GB internal memory, but I can't access the songs I put there. Every time I try to pull up the music player or MX player or gallery, it tells me "No SD card".
Well, no duh...
My question is, is there a setting that will allow me to access the internal storage until I'm able to get a couple SD's? Or should I upgrade to CM10? Also, the reboot SD for the Nook Tablet has a neat little repartitioning affect, got me another 6 or 7GB when I used it to install CM10 there---does the NC have a similar repartitioning tool?
Thanks in advance

Yes there is an option to use internal memory. I don't remember the exact menu since I have not used CM7 in a while. But go to settings, cyanogenmod settings, applications, and choose use internal memory. Or something like that. It swaps emmc and sdcard so that apps think internal media is sdcard.

Yes, unless you want to keep it that way. Your new card will show as emmc then.
CM10 has not implemented that yet. And it would have the same problem. Some apps would not run without an SD present.
