nTelos Milestone X 4.5.604 update - Droid X General

I've seen a lot of traffic since Monday about the nTelos Milestone X 4.5.604 update to GB. No one seems to have brought it up to here, but the update has bricked quite a few phones. My phone was bricked by a unsuccessful update, wasn't rooted, was stock. Boots in bootloader now.
Now the issue is, nTelos can't fix it, and their new policy is only to give refurbs as warranty. My phone is 2 weeks old, don't really want a refurb, and have a backup Milestone to use, in the meantime.
Anyone have anyway a way to get a hold of the sbf file? Any help would be appreciated.
It also looks as if the old sbf file (2.2.1) is an automatic brick also.

I think you need to call customer service and ream out a manager. Bottom line is the software update that "they and Motorola" pushed bricked your new, not refurb phone. It's not like you rooted it or installed a custom rom, or ran over it, or dropped it in the toilet. Their recommended software update bricked it. I would not stand for it.

Yay, I am no longer the only one here on nTelos!
Anyway, I recently OTA'd to the 4.5.604 update, and it went fine, even despite me being out of state. I was really surprised. But yeah, if you just got the phone, they should give you a replacement. They were more than willing when my MIN settings were messed up to send me a new phone, but they just took care of that over the phone.
I wish someone would release the .604 SBF for nTelos.

They didn't have any refurbs in stock (makes you wonder), so they replaced it with a new phone. Also, the employees haven't done the update....
I had a Samsung phone for 3 days with them, before the X. It's screen would lock up, so tech support told me to take it to the store. I did, and they replaced it with a refurb (without informing me). I got home, saw b-stock on the box. Additionally, it had the same issue (a model flaw apparently). They refused to do anything, so they got the phone back during the trial period.
That's how I got the X. I raised 4 kinds of hell. They gave me the X to shut me up.

success
I didnt have any issues here. I updated mine this morning.

My wife's identical phone also did not have a problem. So it's hit or miss.

nTelos 2
So far I havent been really impressed by the customer service and such. I too am with ntelos, I didnt know that I could find this many people!! Starting to learn with the milestone x what not to do. I would like to find a good guide and a rom that works with this phone. Still googling...

I have this phone with ntelos and I've used Miui and Liquid Gingerbread. I've also heard that gummyjar and liberty work as well but I've never tried them myself. miui is my fav thus far.

What process or guide did you use? I dont think that I have seen any out there. Also where did you get the ROM's? All that I have found havent been valid...Thanks in advance..

Well there used to be a forum for just ntelos android owners but it disappeared for whatever reason. I learned most of this stuff on that forum, so I'll try to help if I can.
You'd flash the rom just like you would if you were on any other carrier.
As for a guide, (and assuming you've already rooted your phone) addictivetips has a good one titled "How To Install A ROM Or App From Zip File To Android Device From Recovery" (Sorry the forums don't let me post links yet)
I've used this article a lot.
When looking at a rom I generally make sure it meets three requirements:
1. It's made specifically for the droid x or milestone x.
2. It doesn't flash a radio from another carrier. (I don't understand all the technical details so someone can correct me here. Almost all of the roms that I've found don't do this so you're safe. I just make sure in the description that it doesn't mention anything about flashing a radio.)
3. It is based off the Gingerbread kernel (since that's the version I'm running).
I'll try to post some links to some roms tomorrow. I've only tried a couple versions of miui and liquid Gingerbread. Let me know what else you need.

[Q] Rooting Wierdness

So I bought a smuggled Desire Z in Beijing yesterday, and there are some strange things about it.
First, someone seems to have gone in and modded it. I didn't think they'd turn up modded yet at the shops, because permaroot hasn't been out for very long.
Anyway, there's a bunch of Chinese crapware that I want to remove and whatnot, and I'm getting ready to root (can't uninstall it, like it was installed by a carrier). Here's where it gets strange.
I figured, being modded and all, that the phone was permarooted. Superuser is in the app folder and everything, but none of my root apps are able to gain superuser permissions. None of them.
Anyway, I want root, and I want to uninstall a bunch of that crapware. Should I go through the basic rooting process and see what happens?
Update
I went ahead and rooted using Paul's Visionary, and got permaroot. I'm still confused as to why it had the SU app w/o root, and how the Chinese modders added that pesky crapware...
During all the work to try and unlock the NAND on the DZ, there were some videos from Chinese guys (linked on the G2 forums) who were similarly working on permanent root, NAND unlocking and so forth. There were some links at that point to modded Chinese DZs for sale, so I'm not suprised you've ended up with one.
Yeah, actually, most of the android phones I see on the market are modded. Some offer it as an option, but a lot of them just mod them wholesale.
There are very few android phones available officially in China, though the number has exploded recently. Most android phones are bought abroad and smuggled in, and the modders work hard to localize them for China users.
I'm definitely going to go in and undo most of what they did. They installed some crappy browsers and a market app that gives out pirated, translated apps. They also put their own logo in the lockscreen, and it looks like sh-t.
Here's a question, though. If I want to go back to Asian stock sense, would I need the full Asia RUU, or just the ROM part? There's a link in this forum for the RUU, but he says it's just the ROM component.
I would be careful, because you don't know for sure exactly how they've modded your phone. For example, quite a few people have semi-bricked their phone by just flashing a stock RUU after having s-off and permaroot, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838484
Do you have a custom recovery on your phone ?
It looks like the stock Asian ROM is at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=820410 , as you say.
Hopefully some more experienced guys will be able to give you better advice. I'm very new to Android, though I'm learning fast !
Thank you anyway. I am aware of the S-off issue. I recently rooted, S-off'ed and flashed clockwork successfully using the guides here.
My next step is to hit up their forum and see what's going on. I don't mind that they flashed some custom stuff to make it more China-friendly. What irks me is that they added a bunch of apps (and set their website as default home), then locked it back up, just like a carrier. That's a bit cheeky, if you ask me.
When I bought my G1 under similar circumstances, it had been modded by a rival Chinese forum. Totally unlocked, no bloatware, clockwork recovery, and running a Chinese version of Cyanogen. Obviously a very different philosophy at work.
Anyway, they're called goapk. Though I'm impressed with their skills, I'm definitely not amused.
Yeah I see what you mean. The group that modded your G1 sound like one that would encourage me to go back to them to see what else they're doing.

sdx-developers now have ROMs based on 4/11/2011 VM USA Froyo release

The great developers and testers at sdx-developers came up with two version of Froyo using VM USA Froyo release.
1.
Rooted Froyo ROM for those who previously upgraded to Sprint Froyo 2.2
For Sprint baseband, DL05 or DF27
2.
Stock Froyo ROM based on latest VM USA
A few people tested this and reported that MMS and Voice Mail notifications working again.
http://forum.sdx-developers.com/int...obile-froyo-2-2-stock-system-and-kernel-dump/
Please read in detail and decide for yourself.
I'm still not sure about this update. It's not as simple as running Update.zip, right? You need to flash it, then do a factory reset, then download another program, run that, and THEN it works? Also, is this a modified ROM at all?
Yeah, this isn't the zipped rom from Virgin Mobile, this is pieced (back) together from the 2.2 update installed on an Intercept after the fact, apparently.
3:30pm PDT on 4/13 and still nothing.
I still haven't seen anybody come up with the actual 2.2 Froyo zipped rom from Virgin Mobile. Apparently everyone so far has popped a nut when they get the update and installed it directly instead of downloading it and choosing to install it later, then locating it on their phone and posting it somewhere.
I've got aLogcat installed. I am just waiting for the update to show up. I've seen the message that it is coming. Still waiting for it to arrive though. When it does I'll try to get the devs what they need. I don't really know what I am doing, but I'll give it a go.
I guess this no longer matters as the official update is now in the hands of SDX-Developers.
got mine on 4/20
holy sweet baby jesus this stuff is killing me! I've managed (by the grace) to get my bf's intercept rooted (not temp).. been on this for hours! I'm fairly accustomed to the process as I have an evo and been flashing nightlies for months.
I can't get a recovery on the phone via swupgrade. I put the cm01.tar in the binary folder by itself, and the thing goes through right to the last part and just sits there, doesn't transfer. heeeelp pleeeease! I'm so sick of this now. I was able to delete much of the bloat ware and now I'm wondering if it's worth the trouble to try and get a better rom / kernel. Advice?

atrix uk orange bootloop help

hey all got my atrix a week ago very happy with it managed to root it and thought i would take the plunge in flashing gingerblur 3.1 to it today
all seemed to go well untill reboot and now i seem to be stuck with a red flashing led and rebooting i did however make a backup of my stock rom if it helps
currently i cant do anything softbriced i think
any help on this would be great i am new to all this
uk atrix on orange network
well for any uk users who might come across the same issues i booted into fast boot recovery selected android recovery with volume buttons
which brought up an picture of droid and escelation mark tapped the bottom right hand corner to show on screen menu and selected factory restore and it fixed my bootloop issue.
now im sucsesfully running gingerbreak
i then used titanium backup restored my apps everything is good now
only issue is i cant change my deafult lock code and the finger print settings crash kinda stuck with a pin lock everytime it sleeps
nice one, good to know a orange atrix can use these roms, did you follow the exact same process or did you have to do anything different to the instructions provided?
also mine is stuck in a boot loot with the red led, but factory reset didnt fix it waiting for orange to get more stock for exchange
just followed the instuctions as posted from other users and read a few guides from here for days on end im wondering myself if there are any custom roms based on uk phone releases
No roms based for uk phones as yet as we run a diffrent software version than any of the other out,the only way it will work at a guess it to load a stock rom of a higher version from a at&t or bell one and then use a custom rom based for them, at the mo i am not going try it as we have no way to recover a full brick, you can always try and edit your own rom, this phone is nothing like the htc ones we all love to play with.

just so ya know the 2.1.1 that has leaked works perfectly and you can flash greyblur over it however it breaks data so i would bother for now but yeah it seems pretty safe, both me and chuckyd have flashed successfully
Thats is good news, can you explian more about the data breaks?

its pretty weird, for me it seemed to work fine after i flashed, but then after rebooting later in the day, i couldnt get data to work regardless of what i did, it appeared to work with roaming enabled but i guess leaving that on isnt a great idea. hopefully its something small that ken could fix for us uk users as going from greyblur is a lot nicer overall, i found the honeycomb music player a bit slow though so ive installed playerpro
Have you got the right apn details? also have the radio rom changed?
Atrix in the UK
Hi Folks, I have had an Atrix for three months now and it works brilliantly in the UK with the following setup. Gingerblur 3.1 (based on android 2.2.2 with the system version 4.1.83.(latest avail) The only slight problem you might have is with the radio rom and thats easily fixed.(pm me for details) Also fully recoverable if required.
Ok, is it a new radio rom file?

[Q] naming of update files is confusing ! Help!

OK, after reading a bunch of posts today, I'm dizzy as h3ll, and very confused.
We have two updates that came out OTA in the past couple of days.
1.139.04_4.010.40_COM_GEN1
And then we have
1.141.07_4.010.13_COM_GEN2
I bought my Tablet at Walmart in Watertown, NY, and it was a GEN1 with HC 3.01 on it.
Now some are saying that Acer switched over to GEN2 for US tablets as of the 3.1 update. (I'm not naming names).
I've run multiple custom ROMs on my tablet, and recently went back to see how stable the Acer releases have been. I downloaded both of the files listed above, (actually 11 GEN2 then OTA update to 13).
One person stated that the GEN1 was an Australian release, and that the GEN 2 was the US release. I can confirm what someone else said, that they both have GPS.conf files for north America, not Europe, nor Australia. Now I've seen many custom ROMS with different GPS.conf files in them ie: Europe, North America, etc.
Here's my question, how can we know for certain #1 which update is indeed for which country, as they're both seemingly configured for use in North America, unless Acer is really messing things up and issuing updates for Australia with the GPS configured for north America, and it certainly wouldn't surprise me.
And #2, which update is the newest, as someone else stated that the prefix with the highest number is the latest version, and yet another said it was the one with the higher end number is the latest!
If someone knows the real answer to these two questions, please stand up!
Otherwise it's going to get very confusing when trying to give advice to others asking questions about updates if they don't like waiting on Acer to get their act together.
TIA

Wow no answers to this post. Especially with everyone knowing everything in other threads.....amazing!
Here we go...This is from Acer's patch documents and best shows the current separate code trains...

I'm trying to sort through them to perhaps find/explain some differences.... other than the wifi driver (different countries allow different channels).
The one thing I can tell you is that no matter which rom i've looked at, all of the roms have the following lines in build.prop..
ro.product.locale.language=en
ro.product.locale.region=US
That said, we can add LAZY to the description of ACER. The thing that makes this most murky is the fact the people like us are more inclined to find instant gratification. That is, we download the newest version of the rom (or so we think) rather than the newest regional version. If you look at the above listings and you are on one of the lower versions for any of the above regions, looking for the OTA on the tablet itself will lead you through the upgrade paths listed for each region.
In all honesty we should have a mod sticky a thread for this so all inbound noobs can see it and avoid some grief.

I agree! It's tough enough as it is helping ppl with the current naming process by Acer, or lack thereof!
Should, could, would, good luck!
Moving to Q&A.
PS: Every Q? thread should be posted in Q&A.
Of course the naming convention is only confusing if you're going off the rails with your tab - those of us who just leave them stock and install OTA's don't particularly care or pay attention to the update names.

Yeah bro, you best stick to OTA, you don't want to get too confused, and overtax yourself lol
Now... if we could get custom rom devs to make a couple different versions we'd be in business too...

I wouldn't try to get that as a standalone file unless you *really* know what you are doing, like an experienced linux sysadmin/developer. The simplest thing to do would be to just install the latest HoneyVillain kernel, currently at 3.6.
Frankly, I'd like to see something (preferably from Acer) about what each update actually provides us PRIOR to accepting the OTA. Heck, I can't even find that information when upgrading custom ROMs from like v3.2 to v3.2.1. I'm the type of person who always waited to see how much (for example) SP3 would break Windows XP before installing it myself.
are these ics or hc if they are ics check out my article on how to unbrick your tablet(also how to manually update to ics) PS: if you have already upgraded to ics via custom rom or acer you probably wont be able to go back to HC
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1699277
using custom rom is more simple.

Pretty Butterflies.
Seriously, I took the same tact with you use stock...use stock..., however, I broke down about a month ago, after installing android 4.2 on my wife's HP Playbook (the dead Palm version...)
I got jealous, so used afterOTA to install a new recovery ROM, and root the tablet (also used blackthunder's ap500apx flashing tool), and between the two of them got jb (4.1.2 up and running very smoothly). Now that I installed the skrillex clockwork mod 9.x I now have a great recovery tool, and just installed
4,2.2 on my tablet, with less then 30 minutes to take care of it.
updating rules:
a) read the ENTIRE thread (use multiple tabs.
a1) use a new window for each new topic or sw you investigate.
a2) download all the sw to ONE folder so you can find it.
b) READ the ENTIRE thread (oh, did I say that already?... I mean REALLY read EVERY thread to the END!!
b1) open the first page. open the last page in a new tab, or work your way backwards. yes, 42 pages of updated discussion is difficult, but so is
repairing a bricked tablet.
anyway that's my 25cents worth.

It was during an update (and my forgetting pattern) when my A500 failed. I am also dizzy from all this and Acer isn't any help AT ALL. Just added insult to injury as far as I'm concerned. One has to jump hoops just to find a contact number or email.
So, vent over, does anyone have the original OS for the A500 that I can easily (with instructions) get my tablet up and going with again? I did learn that when using the paperclip method, one has to release the power switch and repress again. Just looking for some assistance yet once again. Thanks - if there were a pill for this, I'd take it.

I'm having the same problem and really will do anything to get it working again. You can use timmy dean's rollback tool, if you can get the 7z open. Neither lubuntu nor Windows XP will open it. So far I flashed a V8 bootloader, but I can't use blackthunder's tool for some stupid reason, and when I contacted Acer (more like called them out on Facebook with a rant for thousands of people to see) they said they'd fix it under warranty conditions even though mine ran out.
They then proceeded to tell me when I went to double check that the case would be valid before I sent it to them, they said it expired and that I would have to pay $160 just to send it to them and not including parts. About a year before it stopped working, I sent it in to get the light board fixed (it was broken when I woke up one day) and I never opened the back of before. Three days ago I opened the back only to see that a cord was unplugged (promptly plugged it back in) and that multiple screws were missing. I nearly "contacted" them again, but decided to continue my search for a solution on here.

Root-Unroot-Restore-Lessons learned
Hello all. I've had my TF now since September or October and enjoying every minute of it. Bought mine in Japan so it was HTKXX.JP_epad-version B70 model. Like so many of us the first thing I wanted to do was root it and install custom ROMs. Being the B70like many I had to wait until Razorclaw was released but as soon as it was I was ready to root.
Let me say I'm not well versed in rooting, intalling, and troubleshooting Android devices...and like many the tablets are new to me. So, to help me figure it out I search and read the forums, re-read, and search again. Notice I said "search the forms", that is very important before posting questions as most of our questions have already been asked and answered. That being said, its ok to post a question, I've found the admins, mods, and other people with experience, problems, and solutions all willing to help. Don't forget, these people do this freely so always respect them even if you dont like the answers or advice they give you. Many of us would have some very shiny paper weights if not for the help from the many on here.
Now..to continue my little adventure. And root I did, Prime! 2.1.0, Revolver, Revolutions HD, and back to Prime! when I had questions I turned to the forums, and sometimes was even able to give a little advice myself. With ICS on the horizion and the latest OTA I thought I should look at unrooting and returning my device back to stock. So, again I turned to the forum for information. Because my TF was the JP model I was concerned there may be something with the build that would prevent this or I wouldnt be able to get the right firmware. You see...there isnt a lot of information related to JP models on the forum. I didnt realize they are all "pretty much the same".
Either way, I eventually posted a question and right away was helped with information or unrooting and reflashing back to stock. All the information however was to restore the US model. After some discussions with one of the RS guys I decided what the heck...gonna try it anyway. (the tinker/challenger in me)
Very good instructions for everything I wanted to do were there. If you think I'm joking, check the signature of RS Team Lead Frederuco. It's all there.
End result my TF was unrooted and now have ver 3.2.1 US.epad-8.6.5.13-20110925 kernel ver [email protected]#1. hmmm...I was worried because everyone was talking about ver.19 and .21...am I in trouble? I've tried various things to get caught up even with a version that I could possibly re-root. Oh boy....even trying to go back and get the JP update from ASUS didnt work, my device is now a US.epad device. My thoughts were...well, at least its still working.
Then I decided to do a bit more investigation, so i went to one of the local computer stores and checked the build and kernel version. I was suprised to see that the only difference in what I now have and what's in the stores is the JP & US. So, maybe what I'm waiting for hasnt gotten to Japan yet...or the ones in the store just haven't been updated. (more likely the case)
Either way, the point and advice here is this. if you decide to unroot and restore I dont recommend to the weak hearted to use a SKU other than what came on your device. It worked yes but not sure where I'm going from here. For me, it doesnt matter as I can always manually update when the versions are on the ASUS site. Worse case, I would have just bought another device and ....yep probably rooted it right away
We all know the risks we take when rooting, tinkering, etc. If you take the plunge, search, read, asks. And respect the people helping.
I hope this in someway helps someone
Update:
I've been able to get my TF from US.epad-8.6.5.13-20110925 to WW_epad-8.6.6.19-20111101 If nothing else I can at least root again. Will probably wait to see if I am actually getting OTA or not. The steps followed can be found in dev post "possible fix for lost root with 8.6.5.21" Sorry, I cant post links yet...
Note that I've changed the SKU on my device from JP to US to WW. So far I haven't seen any problems because of this. (still, if you aren't sure I recommend you dont)
