Help getting ROOT+CWM on GB without ODIN - Epic 4G General

I am trying to find a way to root and then install CWM without using ODIN. I tried this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1062395 but Gingerbreak.apk does not work for me (which from the date, I kind of expected...)
Currently running EI22 GB with kernel-GB-3.tar.md5 KERNEL from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1307980.
If that is not possible, is it possible to restore a NANDROID backup in my current state? I could go back to my backup from EB13, which was running fine and was rooted and had CWM.
Background:
I can no longer get my EPIC detected on my computer. I hesitated on posting on this, because after hours serching, I read hundreds of posts stating "IT'S THE CABLE!". I knew that, because last year when I got the phone, I had cable trouble as well. I found that the cable from my original EVO worked fine. Since then, I have used the same computer, same USB port, same cable and same phone successfully through many ODIN sessions.
Well, that all ended abruptly. I had not flashed the phone in a while. I had EB13 running fine. Tempted to get my hands on some GB, I decided to update.
For about 1.5 hours, everything went fine, including using ODIN with the tried and true setup that had always worked. It worked as expected through these steps:
1. ODIN stock EC05.
2. Was going to ODIN "[REPACKED] CWM + ROOT + BUSYBOX|Odin flashable EI22 system with ec05 modem" (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340385) ... but I saw the OTA update and since I had seen this video by QBKing77 (How to root the Samsung Epic 4G on Froyo and Gingerbread - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWOLEXqAeCc), I thought I could do that from stock GB... Hindsight being 20-20, I think going to the "CWM + ROOT + BUSYBOX|Odin flashable EI22" would have been better....
3. After OTA GB completed, went to install CWM. Found that I needed to follow this: How to Root and Clockworkmod the Samsung Epic 4G on EI22 Gingerbread - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwFRzzIqouE.
From step #3, I tried to ODIN kernel-GB-3a.tar.md5 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1307980. That did not work, I got a failure. I then found the kernel-GB-3.tar.md5 file (without the "a" after the "3") which was mentioned in QBKing77 video, so I tried that one instead. That flashed successfully in ODIN.
After the phone rebooted, I powered off again, in order to restart in download mode and ODIN the recovery.
This is where the problem began. I did not get the COMM port to light up in ODIN. I was a bit puzzled, because I had been using it fine for this session and this setup had never failed... Rebooted back into download mode... nothing.
From then on, I cannot get the phone to be detected on 4 computers (3 laptops, 1 desktop) using 6 different cables on any USB port. Tried the ##8778# to see UART was in modem and USB was PDA (not sure if that even matters for ODIN, but I was willing to try everything). I tried pulling the battery for hours then trying again. I tried without SD card. I tried while holding my breath... no dice.
I think the USB port on the modem might be bad...
Any option I have not considered?

Wouldn't questions go in Q&A not general? Also couldn't this be moved not deleted?
OP: I don't believe there is a way to root without odin on gingerbread. If you do have a backup and you can get into recovery I would say load that backup and then flash a custom gingerbread rom. Weird that you tried multiple cables, ports, computers, and nothing. Did you try to re-install drivers? USB Mass Storage doesn't work? You could try to take it to sprint but I don't know how you'd go about getting it repaired because I don't think telling them that odin won't see it is a good idea. Good luck bro!

Folks, I only posted in this forum because I thought I would need a manual workaround or perhaps a code change for my scenario to work. These would need to be implemented, thus developed.
This is because I spent hours over a few days trying to find a solution on XDA or elsewhere. Since I did not, I felt that a general solution was not available.

USB Mass Storage does not work. I did not try to re-install the drivers. I did have to install the drivers from scratch on the other 3 computers (one 64bit, two 32bit).
I thought of talking it in for repair, since it is stock and Mass Storage does not work. If there is no non-USB solution to be implemented, then this will likely be my only choice.

This 100% due to the cable you are using. I had the same thing happen to me, went to radio shack bought a good cable and boo-ya! Flawless odin and drivers ect.

Don't be so sure. I had this exact problem and after buying 2 separate data cables it still didn't work. Then a coupe of weeks ago it randomly started working. I've never used odin. You can find roms that install cwm and root your device via flashing.

You could literally destroy a popular rom thread with those...

These are my steps I use if I ever completely screw up
1. Go to a computer I haven't used before or I know I haven't messed up the drivers on
2. Install the drivers
3. Use the ec05 .pit and .tar.md5 from the brick recovery and flash using odin
4. Let the phone boot then shut it down
5. Flash latest cwm through odin
6. Flash zip of prefered rom, and now I add in updating to ei22 modem.
These steps have always worked, even when I bricked my phone so bad I didn't even get the samsung boot screen. Also when flashing zip of rom don't forget the x3 wipe procedure. Safety first, lol.

Agreed. The cable was working for over a year. I keep it only for data transfers, since I have not gotten other cables to work. Perhaps it broke...
However...
I tried it again earlier today, using the original setup that always worked. For the first time since Wednesday I heard the glorious sound that Windows plays when a USB device is connected/detected. The device was showing up fine in Device Manager (Samsung something... can't recall right now...). Disconnected cable, booted into download mode, reconnected cable... FAILED again. Cable and/or port on phone may be going bad. I will be stopping by a Sprint store to see if the can get it to connect with one of their cables...

It may sound stupid but it was probably the reboot. I've found it to be 100% the case that I have to reboot before trying to have odin recognize the phone in download mode.
If you are like me and don't turn off your pc...like ever (sleep/hibernate don't count) then the reboot when installing drivers is where my money is.

man your just mister negitive in every ones post arent you..

There is a program I saw that can remove old USB drivers. It is USBdeview. I've seen it over at www.sdx-developers.com in the Epic forum(not Epic 2) General discussion, Rooting 2.3.5 on stock?. The link is http://forum.sdx-developers.com/index.php?topic=18556.0

I am having the same problem with mine. It's NOT THE CABLE! The usb port on the Epic 4G is known to break, Sprint buys a special repair kit from Samsung for this particular issue I hate to say it, but you have to take it back to sprint for repair, if it is rooted i recommend opening up the phone and breaking a resistor and rendering the phone inoperable. That way they will give you a new one no cash involved. :-(

Can not update Manually

I have tried to update manually but cant. I have downloaded the file from samsung, put on root of card as update.zip and tried to install from clockwork. Is this the wrong way to do it.
I am on all stock and have clockwork installed. I downloaded from the link that has been provided from samsung It says E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
Firmware version-2.1-update1
Build Number-SPH-D700 ECLAIR.DI18
So is there something I am doing wrong?
If you're using clockwork, you aren't on stock. Last resort is to use the flash utility that Samsung provided. It completely wipes your phone (not your sd card).

Is there a way to remove clockwork besides going back to stock? Also since I do have clockwork installed, will I not get the ota update to work correctly?
I can tell you what I know.
1) The official OTA update does not work with non-stock roms. In your case, your rom became non-stock once you installed CWR.
2) The flash utility provided by samsung will take any epic and clear it of user data and the existing rom and then flashes the 2.2.1 official rom. Your SD card will be untouched, at least mine was.
3) You can always re-root after you've flashed the official release. Do a search in this forum and you can find threads that explain how.
Good luck sir.
Just go get the cwm flashable pre-rooted eb13 rom that dameon87 posted in the dev section. There's also a link to it in the wiki.

That one did not work. Do I need to try to get the one that is not signed. I dowloaded the signed one and it did not work. After the install it tried to boot up, but went to the samsung screen and then into the official factory restore mode and tried to reboot and stuck on samsung screen.
Use the unsigned one. The only difference betwen the flashable and the one from samsung is the flashable is deodexed.

I can't get the manual to work - mine is rooted and rommed, but my husband's is stock.
I have downloaded direct from Samsung 3 times. Once loaded on computer and opened, the Eula doesn't even have the Next button which is needed to proceed.
So strange, guess he will wait for the OTA and drain his battery at an inconvenient time!!

If you are using odin try this.
Start odin on your PC first and have it up.
Put phone into download mode
Plug in your phone via usb and see if that helps.
It already sounds like you have the samsung drivers installed, but check to make sure.

How To Remove Superuser and CWM?

I thought about rooting, and started the process with the one click mod about a month ago. I got the superuser app in the process. Never went any further. Now I am trying to download the official froyo (which is technically on hold), but it aborts everytime. I am wondering if the superuser or CWM is causing this. I have done a wipe/factory reset three times. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I'd suggest updating by using the official Samsung update on their web site, which you can run from a PC. It seems to provide a much more trouble free update. It will also totally wipe your phone (but not the SD card) so be sure you have a way to restore your data.
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/SPH-D700ZKASPR
Assuming you have a PC, click on the software link, then click on the EXE link for the EB13 update. Install on your PC and follow the directions.
odin back to stock, use eb13 in the pda slot you will have a stock updated phone
i would also advise against updating ota because it's my understanding that it was problems with the ota process that caused sprint to pull the plug. it's really hard to adequately stress how simple using the samsung exe is. if you can turn on a computer you can have a fresh installation of eb13 froyo
wait for the actual fixed release from either sprint or samsung and use either the samsung tool or odin to do a clean install.
I have 2 Epics, one stock, one rooted and rommed. I ran the Samsung .exe
and it caused nothing but troubles on the stock, so had to return to 2.1.
To do so, either go to Service Center or run Odin.
This will also work to unroot and return to stock. The easiest instructions I have found to follow are on Android Central under Epic Forums. Look in Roms and Rooting Section in stickies. Title is something like unbrick. It gives all the links for downloads and how to's. You must be registered to use
but it is less techy there so might be easier to follow.
Thanks, everybody. I just finished the update via the samsung site. Phone just came back online. I will start messing around with it and see how everything worked out. Thanks again!

Can't update after soft brick recover

So I just recovered from a softbrick using the Heimdall method. I'm stoked because I'm no longer bricked but I cannot flash anything via Odin now, even after I have re-installed my Samsung USB drivers. It always gets to SetupCS connection or something like that and just stays there. Is there something I'm missing?
What driver is on your system? Is it the fascinate or the nexus s? If you're coming back to some level of stock from a GB rom you might still have the GB (nexus s) drivers. You might have to reload the froyo fascinate drivers for odin to work.

the atlas 2.2 pit file goes in the "PIT" section at the same time as the tar.md5 file goes in the "PDA" section and re-partition checked......when those two files are placed in their respective slots and re-partition is checked, THEN you hit start on odin. Alright so I just tried adding the PIT, repartition checked, and added my ODIN package, but still had the same problem. About to install the CWM All file you gave me and try that out.
*edit* Well something just happened. My SD card just got corrupted and I cant even format it now. What the hell is going on?!
*edit 2* OK so the SD card issue fixed itself. Just had to hit format a billion times. I'm now running an OTA update to my phone from Verizon as I had to go all the way back to DI09.
*edit 3* I'm now sitting on ED04 fully stock but away from my computer. I will try again once I get home later on tonight. Just out of curiousity... has anyone else other than kidserious and the other guy had this problem or have experience in dealing with it?
So checking in again. I am still freezing at "SetupConnection..." in Odin. No luck at all with flashing the CWM ALL file as "update". I'm completely out of options at this point. Help?

Let me rack my brain and think........I will get back to you.
RESOLVED
Alright so I finally figured out my own way around this. It was actually fairly simple and I'm a bit ashamed I didn't think to try this earlier.
Hopefully this will be of assistance for any future issues. Thanks Kidserious for your help.
*edit* So I just found some instructions for uninstalling the Heimdall driver from your phone. I'm booting up after a fresh flash of DI01 and hopefully this will work. I'm guessing that even though I'm installing the samsung usb drivers back to my computer, they arn't reaching my phone, and this may be the issue I've been facing. *pauses for a bit to test theory* Yep. That was all it was. Sorry for taking up so much room on here... just FYI to everyone though. If you soft brick and recover via Heimdall you HAVE TO UNINSTALL THE HEIMDALL DRIVER OR NOTHING WILL WORK.
FML. So it didnt work as I had planed. After I flashed my edify rom I samsung bootlooped. And Odin still isnt working for me.
I'm giving up for tonight. Functioning on DI01 stock ): at least it works...
Alright so I'm fairly certain I've narrowed it down to one fix but I seem not to be able to fix it. I need to install the samsunflg husband drover back to my phone and uninstall the heimdall driver. I've tried it twice and or hasn't worked either time
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
---actually resolved----
Sorry for spamming this thread everyone, even though I've really been the only person posting in it anyways.
I have found my fix. So I was never able to fully uninstall the Heimdall drivers so Odin wouldn't recognize my phone and would hang at "Initalization."
So I took a weird strategy and actually purposely soft bricked my phone. Scary to do but the outcome was well worth it. Here is what I did.
1.) Puropsely soft bricked phone
2.) Put it in to download mode
3.) Went to device manager
4.) Contrary from Heimdall Uninstall instructions phone will now show up under the general usb devices areas. Find this area, expand, and right click on Samsung Composite USB Device.
5.) Go through the options of manually picking the usb driver you want to use.
6.) Install chosen standard samsung USB driver. You may get many options in the list but pick the Digitally Certified one.
7.) I didnt unplug the phone after I flashed the new driver so open up Odin and flash your DI01 Stock Recovery with Atlas v2.2 PIT and Repartition checked.
8.) Once finished phone will be on DI09 fully bloated stock and should work with Odin for any further flashes.
*edit* It appears as if you need to flash the samsung driver to phone evrytime you want to flash something via Odin.

[Q] Epic stuck in limbo with mismatched modem and firmware

My Samsung Epic 4G has the EE03 modem installed, but I have EC05 as my current firmware. I can't Odin back anywhere because my Epic does not like to be recognized by any computer anymore. (I'm not using the factory-provided charging cable, but instead a Palm Pre cable)
I thought it wasn't too huge of a deal, but the newer modem and older firmware don't seem to like each other much, which in turn eats the phone's battery up extremely fast.
As well, because of the difference, there's a recommended Android OS update to EI22 that keeps nagging me and won't go away. Every time I run it, it gets to the part "updating modem," the installation fails with the following message:
"script aborted (no error message)E:Error in /cache/a5ff039a0c97.SPH-D700_update_EC05_to_EI22.zip (Status 7) Installation aborted.
Because I can't use Odin, what's the best option for fixing something like this?
I had a similar problem where I was stuck on a modem I didn't want.. there is no way possible to fix this I believe.. cuz u would have to switch modems and that won't happen without odin.. if u were on ec05 modem then u could have jjust flash ec05 to ei22 but there's no way to change ur modem without a computer
If ur sure the usb it working and u tried cleaning the outside of ur phones usb slot and it still didn't work then the best thing I can tell you to try Is probably to backup whatever current setting you have and to flash a ee03 compatible rom.. I think ee03 was a gb leak?? So I think an eh17 rom would go well with it? If so I would try thunderhawk its an amazing rom
But I'm no professional so id probably just wait now and see if anyone with more experience agrees on what I say or would have a better idea for you

Lil is correct you will need to get Odin or Heimdall working. Heimdall installs its own drivers so you have the best shot with that and a new heavy duty cable.

Koshi, take a clean unused toothbrush, take the end of the data cable that plugs into ur phone, and carefully brush the end inside. Do the same thing with the usb port of ur phone. Then blow into both parts, and try connecting to ur pc again.

Don't use a lot of pressure when brushing.

You could also try the ec05 revert cmw flashable zip. I had some issues when I had the usb mass storage installed. Then I couldn't get adb bridge installed propper so download mode wouldn't connect.
Uninstall your drivers, revert to ec05, install drivers and reboot, connect phone as storage, then dissconect, turn on adb and reconnect, when done disconnect and turn on dl mode and connect again, disconnect, load and run odin, reconnect in dl mode, and pray for a com port to come up.
Easy enuff to go back with a cmw backup if it doesn't work, might be worth a try.
Here's the thread 4 ya

I had an issue after taking my epic into be serviced one time where the computer would no longer recognize it. Turns out they switched a setting in one of the dialer menus I believe it was ##7887# and then you had to switch it to or out of modem mode. Sorry I am not much more help but I am cm7 now and can't access those hidden menus now but if someone else could read this perhaps they could clear up my haziness on this and give you some proper instructions to check if you are in the right mode.

Thanks yep that was my issue. I went back into the sprint store and the guy saw me coming because he realized after I left he didn't switch it back. Flipping that back had me off and odining just like before. Hopefully its that simple for the op.

Yep I hope so to. I only know this because when I first got my epic (brand new) it was in modem and not pda... took me well over 3 weeks of searching to find out why my mass storage was not being detected on my laptop... and then I found XDA! THANK GOD FOR XDA!

Try the "Odin for Dummies" method. Use the Samsung EB13 tool which will reinstall all drivers for your computer to recognize your phone, walk you through the process of installing EB13 (it will wipe your phone completely) and put you on EB13 which you will then OTA to EC05 and OTA again to EI22. Here are the DL links:
http://www.multiupload.com/69YUW73XFB
I use the tool sometimes because I think it is actually safer than using Odin because you won't make any mistakes, like check marking the wrong options or using the wrong files in Odin, since the tool does everything for you.

[TIP] Going back to stock EB13.!

Okay guys, So lets say you flashed a custom rom on your epic. The rom was crap and you didnt like it. So you boot into CWM or w.e your Custom Recovery is and you restore your backup. After the backup is restore you end up with the Samsung Boot Logo STUCK.! This can be caused by incompatibility within the roms. Nandroid restore dosent always work when reverting back to stock from a custom rom, Unless your nandroid back up is from another custom rom. So this is a tip or flashing you phone back to Stock EB13. Its even better if you have a stock nandroid backup because restoring the backup whilst having this stock rom installed will work.! Go to this site http://www.samsdroid.com/2011/11/samsung-sph-d700-epic-4g-stock-rom.html and download the stock rom of your choice. Place the rom on your SD card. NOTE: Use sdcard in another phone since yours is bricked, or if you have a Micro Sd Reader use that. Boot up into Recovery and flash the rom. Congrats you are now back to stock and can do a Nandroid Restore. No ODIN, NO HARD WORK.! Happy Flashing
LINK FOR SW UPGRADE if the above method dosent work for you: http://ifile.it/8alqt5h/Epic4G_FroyoUpgrade_EB13_Tool.exe
Did you check the links before you posted this? They're all dead.
And they're all links to leaked firmware, not stable ones officially released by Samsung(With the exception of EB13).
The links aren't dead when I check them. If the links didn't help you out. Then google "Sph d700 SW upgrade tool" Its a utility that automatically flashes phone back to stock EB13. Just put the phone into download mode, by holding. "1" button on keyboard and hold power and plug in the pc. Follow the on screen instructions. If you can't find it PM me and ill upload it to 4shared for you to download.

I am by no means an expert but... If you are coming from an MTD ROM, you have to use the victory.pit file to repartition the NAND back to BML. To my knowledge, there is no way to do this from CWM (is the recovery partition rewritten when repartitioning?). If that executable linked at the end of the post can reproduce the partitioning that Odin does, then yes, but you still must have the windows drivers, a good USB cable and be plugged into a good USB port. At that point, why not use Odin.

You are indeed correct. The SW upgrade is the linked .exe for inexperienced user. Not everyone knows how to use Odin. Yes it may be simple to us but a pain to others. Im pretty sure if people are flashing roms, the samsung drivers should already be installed on there computer. The sw upgrade comes with the DOWNLOAD MODE Driver, So that when you plug the phone into the computer whilst in download the drivers are automatically installed. Within a couple of clicks you are back to stock EB13. From there you can re-root using the one click and do Nandroid Restore.
There is already a guide for this

There are but there all explained in different ways. This is the easy way to explain the method above. Just download and follow the instructions. Alot of people are using odin. And alot of people are struggling when using it because of the lack of knowledge. So Im just putting this method back out there to remind users that this is also possible if you do not understand odin.

I agree with this but 90% of people here are on MTD and will brick by doing this. Also, when recovery works you can just flash another ROM. Still a good guide.

Thanks, And i actually flash other ROMs if i end up with a brick. But the first time i flashed CM9 i missed a step and bricked, and it wouldnt let me flash another rom without the samsung screen hanging. So i used this utility to get back to stock, root, and restore backup. Great tool for people who still enjoy great ol' BML. Thanks for the compliment. By the way love your theming dude.
