CWM Quick Backup and Restore (No Progress Bar) Fix! - Galaxy S II General

When i realized that Rom Manager was not fully functional on our phones I was pissed. One of the reasons is that at first i couldn't get my phone to do a quick backup and restore with cwm or cwm Manager so it seemed to take twice as long when the progress bars were showing during backups and restores. Anyways you dont need to keep rom manager installed to do this but you have to do it at first in order to get the files to enable the quick back up and restore feature.
1. Install Rom manager and enable "quick backup and restore" - this will create a folder and within the folder a number of files one of which is called "hidden progress". Rom manager most likely installed it on your internal sd card and if you do backups to your internal sd card and not your external then you dont need to do this next step of you dont want to, although it wouldn't hurt to do it anyways.
For quick backup and restores to external_sd
2. Copy the clockworkmod folder and its contents (if you already have backups and you dont want them on you internal than just create a new folder on your external_sd and name it clockworkmod. After that copy the hidden progress file over to the clockworkmod folder and thats it. whether you use CWM Manager or just boot into recovery and do it that way, you should always have the quick backup and restore feature back)
*There are a few other files in the clockworkmod folder than rom manager creates. I went ahead and just copied the whole folder including everything inside the folder and thats how i was able to finally get it working, but I think it is most likely just that one file that doe the fix.
Backup and Restores now take me 2-3 minutes as opposed to 5 mins and longer
If this has already been figured out and posted i apologize, i stumbled upon it while trying q b&r on my phone again. I searched and never found a solution.
If you like or find it useful please hit thanks.

So how will it ultimately work ...

On my AT&T Tilt, once you had installed HARDSPL, you could simply run RUU's which were packaged simply as EXE files on your PC and boom ... new ROM.
For those of us who have rooted and run unrEVOked(2) to get us the custom recovery, can someone please explain generally how a new ROM would get flashed.
<edit> tcberg2010 posted a wonderful analysis in a thread with a heading which will guarantee no one reads it... this is what tcberg2010 said:
Download one of the roms from here. http://inc.sodpit.com/. They are mostly stable might get a few random reboots.
Steps:
1. Download Rom of your choice, unrevolved and JagerRomSense are the 2 newest right now.
2. Copy and Paste onto sdcard. Make sure it is not in any directory's of SD card, just on the sdcard.
3. Verify it's there using Astro or some other File Manager.
4. Run Titanium Backup if you haven't already. (If you don't have it, get it, it's must have for root users.
a. Select Menu, Batch, Backup user apps.
b. let it run, this will take some time.
5. When that's done use Rom Manager to reboot into recovery.
6. Do "Wipe data/factory reset" and "wipe cache partition"
7. Select install zip from sdcard, choose zip from sdcard, then select whatever rom you downloaded.
8. When that's done reboot your phone, once your done setting up, download titanium backup, set that up.
9. Select Menu, Batch, Restore User apps.
After that's done you'll have all your apps that you had before, data included, with a fresh new rom to try out. Hope this helps!!
Wipe, Put rom on the root on your sdcard, then re-name the rom update.zip or leave it, go into recovery, flash update.zip, reboot. Very simple.
All you need to do to flash a custom ROM is:
1. You CAN use ROM Manager to flash one by going to Install ROM through SD Card.
2. You can place the .zip file onto your SD Card (it can be named anything) and then go to Install .Zip from SD Card in the Custom Recovery and select Choose File. This will allow you to browse through the files and select the one you want.
Hope this helps.
its easy... Wipe data....then put on SD card search for it with rom manager or with the custom recovery .. and installl its easier than u think i did for the first time ever yesterday no problem
So far I have used update.zip files from the sd card... you can either flash this from Rom Manager or use Clockwork Recovery to flash update from sd card.
In clockwork you select install from sd card- then navigate to where the update is saved on the card and select the .zip you want to install.
In Rom Manager just select the option "Install ROM from SD card" - all you do is direct the app to the .zip you want to install and it takes off from there.
Just remember to backup first.
eezy peezy...
New ROMs stick- updating recovery does not...
Before we change roms and wipe is there a way to backup text messages and restore them after the new rom is installed.

SMS Backup and Restore
Works great and fast
sms backup in the market
???
I thought it was a super bad idea to try to restore data, am I in error?
I thought one would either use MYBACKUPPRO or TITANIUMBACKUP to take only APPS + App Data; but NOT to backup data itself to be restored on a different rom.
All SMS Backup restores is your txt messages, used it on my wives phone and had no adverse affects. I see everyone say flash update.zip, you may already know this, but the recovery that we use does not require us to change to name to update.zip, you can flash any zip, just know what the name is and flash it.

Deleting old Nandroid backups?

Hi All-
I am faithful about backing up my system as I cruse through the various new roms. When getting in Nandroid, I see several old backups. Can anyone tell me how to delete these older backups?
Thanks!
Scott
Mount the sd card and delete the directory.
the directory is in the clockworkmod backups folder.. unless your using a different recovery i presume
I use Clockwork, so if you do, use the following.
Open Astro (or other file manager)
SDcard -> Clockworkmod -> Backup
Backups will be named by date and time in format of
Year - Month - Date . Hour . Minute . Second
ex: 2010-07-15.18.42.16

[Q] Where do I find my nandroid backup (done from Clockworkmod Recovery) on the S4?

I have recently flashed Clockworkmod Recovery on my Galaxy S4 (GT-I9500). I performed a nandroid backup which works just fine since I've been able to use it to restore my stock ROM. However, the phone seems to know where to fetch the backup but I can't locate it personally on the phone either through the PC or using file managers on the device like Root Explorer and Solid Explorer. I even used Solid Edxplorer to change permissions so that I could see all hidden files. Still, all I saw was a 35 byte file named .recovery_version located in /sdcard/clockworkmod with these permissions: rw-rw-r-- and from what I see in the properties of the file it is an MD5. That is all I see. In clockworkmod recovery, the backup is quoted to be in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup. I can't see that file on my device. Why aren't I seeing this nandroid backup of mine yet it is in the internal storage? I want to move it from my ohone to PC to free up space since it occupies around 3 GB of the precious storage (you all know the storage issues the GS4 is facing don't you?). Help please.

your backup is located in Data/Media/clockworckmod
use es explorer, enable root, move clockworckmod folder to sd card then to your pc
or use adb command to pull it to your pc

If you cannot see or find it in your /sdcard internal, look in your external sdcard /clockworkmod
folder and sub directories in that folder.
The backups are either in internal or external sdcard /clockworkmod and it's sub-directories
Good luck,
Thanks, I found it using root Explorer in the directories you directed me to. Good day mate

Really appreciate this. Was looking around and noticed my phone storage was fairly low, and couldn't find my stock backup to save my life. Googled this and it brought it right up! Again, thanks! Was fixing to make another backup of my current setup and realized I didn't have enough room lol.

I had similar issue.
Your advice resolved it for me as it was exactly where you pointed.
I go about it a bit differently. Under settings in CWMR you can change the backup location to the external sdcard. Do your backup, connect your phone to the pc and copy it off like any other file. The only downside is you need the available space on your card.

Until you are on the road and need that backup because you got a bad dl. Unless you keep a zip drive on you.. Which is actually a good idea. I switched over to twrp so I can save it to extsd.

Brain fart. I meant to say I change the settings in ROM Manager not CWMR.
I think we are talking about doing the same thing but with different apps. I change the location setting in ROM Manager which I use for my backups and it automatically saves the backup to the extsd instead of the device. I then copy it to my pc but always maintain the latest backup on my extsd in case I need it wherever I am. Done and done. No annoying copying from device to extsd to pc or using download server or an adb pull needed.
It's personal preference to use ROM Manager with CWMR or TWRP. It doesn't matter to me. I started off using clockworkmod's apps some time ago and am happy with them. I just moved to 4.2.2 and noticed how ROM Manager handles the backups differently and the number of questions regarding how to get them off their phone. This is my solution and how I have always done it.
Worked on Samsung Galaxy S Duos GT 7562. Thanks!
Don't have the S4, but after googling this, well, THANKS!!!
open your es explorer and active it'a rooting option in slide panel or use root expkorer then go to this path
mnt//shell/emulated/clockworkmod/backup/ you will fine a folder named this date and time thats your backup folder copy it into your mobile storage .... done the n copy or move it in to your pc like normaly file ...
Why is this all the sudden not put on the sdcard? Privacy? Anyway to change recovery to sdcard/clockworkmod/backup?
I used the adb pull command to pull from phone mnt//shell/emulated/clockworkmod/backup

In Android 4.2+ backups are placed in secure directory, inaccessible to other apps. Backups can be pulled with adb or by using the ROM Manager Backup Download Server.
Heads up
thanks, i was also looking for the backup location as i dont have an external card, thanks.

Ehm, no. Running 4.4.2 and still the back-ups are located in the directories talked about above. Easily accessible by all file manager apps.
Never been any other way as well.
found the backup dir
my portion of a backup was under CWM and backups found deleted using sd card:good:
Having trouble finding backups on Nexus4
I have the same problem....
The backup was made through the CWM in recovery mode...
The MD5 checksum gave an error..I am trying to fix it so I need access to the files.
I can see the backup folders in recovery mode but cant find them with any file explorer nor did they show with adb pulling sdcard...
Any ideas??

Thank you sir a lot.
I would pray CWM devs, and all the other app devs like Dolphin, Whatsapp etc to please print the path once the backup is done. This will save us a bunch of time!
THANKS

Hi, Thanks a lot I am new to using SONY devices as I have used SAMSUNG and HTC ones before. Your direction pointed me to the right path and I was able to move it to the PC afterwards.
I really appreciate your help.

Cannot figure out Nandroid Manager on rooted MF3

I cannot figure out how to get Nandroid Manager to work or ROM Manager for that matter to get a snapshot of my phone. I used the SD card method of rooting my Galaxy S4 (AT&T/I337) so all is good there. I am using Titanium Backup for my app data/settings/SMS logs, etc., but if I have to do another wipe/factory reset, I don't want to have to rebuild my phone again from scratch with all of my app settings, my launcher settings, and so on. I had thought I was backing up all the while using DropSync and I couldn't restore anything from that app or the external SD card for some reason.
I do not think I have either ClockWorkMod installed but I do have TWRP which I found out was automatically installed when I rooted (?). I realized too late of course (after reading these forums) that I shouldn't have even tried flashing the CWM but quite honestly I was trying to do 2 things - use the S4 as a USB Mass Storage device and backup my phone using Nandroid Manager or ROM Manager. I read that I needed to have CWM installed in order to do either. Is this misinformation?
The biggest problem I have with Nandroid Manager is that it seems to be backing up to nowhere. It's default backup location is /mnt/. When I tried to change the path to my ClockWorkMod folder (that I have on the internal SD), it said "This is not a valid ClockWork Mod folder." It also asks me to find the TWRP folder but I can't find that one either using ES File Explorer search.
I just want a snapshot of my phone so that if it goes squirrely, I hit a button and it's all back. Is this unrealistic with the MF3?
And btw, I can't use the SafeStrap method because my phone has to be encrypted since I use it for work email. It's one of the requirements by the company. I read that I should avoid SS for now.

[Q] Restoring Backup ROM Problems:

Hello, everyone, I came to this forum in hope for some advice with a problem I'm having. I'm sure I'll be sticking around as I just got a new S5 for Christmas, though. I apologize if these threads are redundant, but I've searched this forum and Google and haven't found a solution. First things first, I have a T-Mobile S5 running 4.4.2 and I rooted, installed CWM with Phil's Touch and created a backup. I saved the backup to my internal sdcard storage and copied a backup on my PC via usb. I've since deleted the backup saved to my internal storage to save space and would like to place it back in my phone to restore. I have not installed a custom ROM yet or re-partioned anything. The reason I'd like to restore is because my dumb-ass accidentally uninstalled the stock video/audio player while attempting to remove bloatware. I now can't listen to or view any videos sent via text without first downloading them and using an installed app' to play them. (Any tips on this would be nice.) Here's my main issue: when I attempted to place the backup back into my Clockworkmod/Backup/ folder, I'm prompted with a message saying I can't move this item. I've tried moving the file on my PC as well as my phone and had no success. I then tried using a root file manager to manually place the backup into the clockwork folder (it allowed me to put the backup in my phone's storage, but not clockwork's backup folder) and it ended up placing it the folder in clockwork, but not the backup folder. The folders now go: Clockworkmod/'My saved backup' - Backups folder/ empty. I can't move nor delete that file because it is write protected and I have no idea what to do from here. I need to restore my backup and definitely remove the copy that's write protected as it is taking a few gb's of storage. Any help will be greatly appreciated and I will likely give a small Paypal donation to the best response. (preferably tonight, if possible.) Thanks, guys. Let me know if you need any other details.
Update: I just tried installing Phil's Touch Aroma File Manager as I read that can delete/edit write-protected files and I'm not able to launch it in recovery. The folder and zip files were correctly placed, but it won't recognize the folder. I don't understand why my phone isn't recognizing anything in the Clockwork folder.
